St. Edmund Preparatory High School is a Roman Catholic college preparatory school for young men and women. Our mission is to instill the Gospel values in our students so as to empower them to become confident and self-disciplined participants in the everchanging global society. We educate according to the needs of each student and challenge each of them to achieve academic excellence through practical learning experiences. Founded in 1932 by the Dominican Sisters of the Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary of Sparkill, New York, St. Edmund Prep is committed to providing a co-educational, college preparatory, faithbased education. Originally founded as a parochial high school of St. Edmund Parish, we are currently an independent school, governed by a lay board of trustees. The school is chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York, and accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges.

St. Edmund of Canterbury is remembered for his faithful life of love of God. In England, where he was born, St. Edmund is known as a peacemaker and noted professor of math and geometry. Inspired by a dream and trusting in God’s call, he left teaching to enter the priesthood. As Archbishop of Canterbury, he gave away his possessions to feed the poor and care for the sick. This spirit lives on in St. Edmund Prep’s desire to instill in our students a lifelong commitment to learning and the Gospel call to service. ST. EDMUND PREP l 4

Academics

Our Minds Quick Facts

elective courses offered

The classroom is at the core of the St. Edmund family. Our faculty create safe, structured learning environments and design lessons which place individual students at the center of the learning process. Students are taught how to learn, how to articulate clearly their own opinions and ideas, and to value the opinions and ideas of their fellow students.

12

In order to help each individual student achieve success, our faculty members are available to students before and after school to offer extra help and review material in each subject discipline. This one-to-one level support fosters the strong faculty-student relationships which have become the foundation of the St. Edmund Prep family. These relationships continue throughout their time at the Prep, as our faculty members continue to mentor individual students and help them to navigate the various challenges they face on their journeys to achieve success.

14

St. Edmund Prep offers a wide variety of academic programs that meet the needs of students across all grade levels. Students will have the opportunity to partake in courses ranging from those in the honors program to the most demanding Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes. All students are encouraged to enroll in the most rigorous classes and take full advantage of the college prep experience.

We recognize that our family extends worldwide, requiring our students to have a breadth of knowledge and perspectives that extends beyond our local community. As an IB World School, it is our goal to provide a high quality education which encourages the development of skills to live and work with others globally. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a 2 year collegepreparatory curriculum which requires sutdents to study across all disciplines. IB graduates leave the Prep well versed in what it means to be a college student and prepared to meet any challenge they face at the college level. In their Junior and Senior years, IB students are required to take classes and comprehensive exams in six major subject areas inculding English, foreign language, history, science, math, as well as a course called theory of knowledge. In addition, they must independently write an extended research essay and complete 150 hours of service to their school and/or community. Several of our students who have earned the IB Diploma have been granted junior standing in their second year of college. We are currently the only Catholic secondary school in Brooklyn to offer the Programme. The IB Programme is well suited to our family environment, in large part because it requires from students a unique style of learning through which they receive strong support and guidance. IB teachers coach students through their challenges, facilitating the learning process while allowing students to create their own avenues for learning. Our IB teachers provide students with the support that they need to exceed the high expectations of the IB, which include developing superior writing and speaking skills, forming educated hypotheses and defending solid theses, and doing extensive lab work and research.

“Only a global approach to education such as that embodied by the IB Programme can instill the dexterity to learn across cultural, lingual, and political barriers.” Arthur Rozentsvit ‘10 Binghamton University ‘14 IB Diploma Recipient

“First and foremost every Catholic educational institution is a place to encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth” - Pope Benedict XVI A student’s personal relationship with God is at the heart of our family. As a Catholic school, we invite each student, regardless of religious tradition, to examine the many ways in which God is acting in their lives and challenge them to realize their responsibility to prayer and action. Our Campus Ministry programs help our family to grow in that relationship with God through worship, personal reflection, and service opportunities. Daily morning prayer, community masses, and prayer services help our students to value prayer as a means to personal growth and understanding of themselves. These opportunities help us to celebrate different events of the year including, Advent, Lent, and important feast days in the life of our Church. Students are also afforded the opportunity to receive the Sacraments of Initiation if they have not already received them. Our Emmaus Retreat program provides juniors and seniors with the opportunity to examine their own spirituality and their relationship with God, form a community with fellow classmates, faculty members and alumni, and open their minds and hearts to the experiences, beliefs and feelings of others. The Cleopas Retreat allows our students to minister as leaders to young people in neighboring parishes who are preparing for the reception of Confirmation. As our students grow in their relationship with God, we encourage them to put this faith into action to serve those around them. Street Corner Gourmet engages students to help prepare a part of a Thanksgiving meal for those in need. Our Summer Outreach Project is an immersive service experience in Philadelphia, which calls students to serve the most needy. We engage the community as well to serve local nursing homes, parishes, and other charitable organizations through student service experiences.

“Participating in projects like Street Corner Gourmet and summer outreach were some of the most eyeopening and enriching experiences of my life. It made me appreciate all that I have been given; it helped me to discover a charitable part of me that I never knew existed. It brought out compassion and a desire to give to and help those who need it the most.” Madelin Mule ‘14 ST. EDMUND PREP l 10

“The most important part of our retreat is that it challenges young men and women to take a good hard look at the kind of people they are becoming and the role that other people and God have in making them who they are. In true St. Edmund fashion, the Emmaus Retreat reinforces in us that we should go out into the world as men and women for others. “ Chris LaSalle ‘06

College Readiness

Our Futures Quick Facts

14.5

million dollars in scholarships earned by the Class of 2014

Our students are focused on the future. Each experience at St. Edmund Prep prepares our students for success at the college of their dreams, in their career, and for life. Our students know that from the first day of freshman year they are forming their college application. We believe that each quiz, assignment, project, game, and extracurricular activity throughout their four years at the Prep is building our students into young men and women ready to begin the next stage of their lives.

99%

Our Guidance Department blends this family atmosphere with college and career readiness throughout the student’s four years. Each student meets with guidance three times monthly in a group setting to address needs specific to their year. Freshmen focus on the academic transition from elementary school and study skills. In sophomore year, Naviance, a college and career readiness software, is introduced and is expanded upon through senior year.

5

Sophomores complete personality and career inventories and evaluate their own report card and academic transcript. As juniors, the college search begins more intently through the use of Naviance. To further the reach of this online program, the Guidance Department organizes college visits, college exploration weekends and the college fair.

Not all learning at St. Edmund Prep occurs in the classroom. St. Edmund provides a wide variety of athletic opportunities that are designed to aid in the overall development of our students while being consistent with the mission of the school. Participation in interscholastic athletics provides students with a significant opportunity to become involved with their peers and their coaches in an educational experience that takes place outside of the classroom. Being a participant in Eagle athletics fosters leadership, teamwork, time management, and community responsibility. Our athletic directors and coaches work together, teaching the proper fundamentals of their respective sport as well as endorsing a healthy respect for competition and sportsmanship. Indeed, the Athletic Department encourages our student-athletes to take the lessons they have learned through practice and competition into their lives outside of St. Edmund Prep.

I learned to be selfless, I learned to be humble, and I learned how to maximize my potential on the basketball court.” In the classroom, David has a 3.92 GPA. Outside of school, David works as a legal clerk intern in the civil division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office - Southern District of New York. On the basketball court he has continued to excel, scoring over 1,000 career points at St. Joseph’s, being recognized as USCAA First Team All-American, and being selected as a member of National All-Academic Team in 2014.
