Welcome – Haere mai

Welcome to the 23rd edition of State of the Arts – South Taranaki Arts Bulletin. Our stunning summer in the south kicked off with our annual Arts in the Park event in Hawera in December. King Edward Park provides a seriously well groomed backdrop for local artists and craftspeople to display their creations. Performances from local schools, dancers, musicians and the high-rise stiltwalking Rainbow Folks created a festival atmosphere for visitors and stallholders alike. Everybody’s Theatre in Opunake celebrated in style in mid February with an event to mark the end of a huge restoration project. Beginning with structural engineering work on the historic building in 2013 to meet earthquake compliance standards, the transformation of this community owned theatre is now complete. The Art Deco styled theatre and events venue, complete with historical projection room and old fashioned lolly shop, is a tribute to a hard working committee with a vision to provide a high-class community asset in their town. We are lucky to have such dedicated people preserving an iconic building for future generations to enjoy.

Two winged girls check out the Rainbow Folks

In the south, Waverley will once again be a host town for the Whanganui Artist Open Studios event in March. 100 Days will feature work by ten artists, displaying 1000 artworks in the old Scout Hall on Chester Street. Our own Taranaki Arts Trail will feature many new artists in June this year and is quicky becoming a must-do cultural event in the region. This edition offers plenty of opportunities to participate and enjoy the arts - go well and enjoy! Warm regards,

New Mural in Patea

A new mural project on the public toilets at Mana Bay, Patea has enhanced a public facility, supported a local artist and enlivened the popular beach area. Facilitated by South Taranaki District Council Arts Co-ordinator, Michaela Stoneman, the mural has been designed by Luther Ashford (pictured), a former Patea Area School student currently studying for a degree in Maori Visual Arts at Massey University. Luther was part of the last youth mural project, facilitated by Raumano Health Trust and STDC over eight years ago.

Ms Ashford describes the story of her mural “The design begins at the forefront of the building with the word ‘Patea’ remaining as the centerpoint. This is bordered by two waves which flow from the upoko of Tangaroa featured below. The pattern wraps around the building representing the awa and its continuous flow to the moana. The triangles that support each corner are stylisations of the tukutuku patterns patiki and poutama; these represent the knowledge surrounding safe practices in the water and the abundance of kaimoana provided by Tangaroa.” The Mana Bay Mural Project has been funded by South Taranaki District Council, assisted by sponsorship from Hawera Resene. The mural artists have received a lot of positive feedback from both locals and visitors while onsite working on the mural. Many thanks to volunteers from the Patea Boardriders Club and community members who have helped at different stages of the preparation and painting of the mural.

Quirky Fox – Exhibition Wild Spaces

Opens 26 February Reclaimed wood, concrete, acrylics and indian ink merge to create images with strong silhouettes and geometric influences in Quirky Fox’s latest exhibition. Featuring originals, limited edition and open edition prints by Wellington artist Asher Boardman, Wild Spaces explores the interaction between nature and man. Based in the Akatarawa Valley, Asher Boardman is inspired by the wilderness and mountains that surround her home. Unusually for a New Zealand artist much of her work features foxes, owls, deer, bears, wolves and rabbits as opposed to New Zealand natives. The works contrast harsh geometric shapes with organic forms to illustrate the impact and confusion that human interference has on nature from the perspective of the animals. This is the last New Zealand exhibition by Asher before she relocates overseas.
