THE STATE N E WS

MONDAY, MAY 4, 201 5

It is that time of year again. Finals week is here and it is safe to say no one is excited about it. With summer right around the corner and your GPA right on the edge, it’s hard to stay sane. Before you pull out your “I have given up” sweat suit and come up with every possible reason for why you will fail miserably, take a deep breath. The State News has got your back and has created this guide surviving finals week that will help you focus and stay relaxed.

x apps for finals week

KNOW HOW YOU STUDY BEST Silence, a little noise, or with the TV on – know your own routine.

SET GOALS To-do lists are a great way to set you on track!

DON’T FOCUS ON ONE SUBJECT FOR TOO LONG It’s proven that switching between subjects at least every hour keeps you focused.

TAKE–A–BREAK

POMODORO

Your brain can only absorb so much information. Take frequent and regular breaks.

This app allows users to segment their studying into 25-minute work periods with 3-minute breaks. For students who struggle with time management this app can help you use your time productively.

TIME OUT Time Out is a great app for students who will be spending a lot of time studying on the computer. This app is free and available on PC and Mac. Its goal is to give you short and long breaks after periods of work. For example, after 10 minutes of work it reminds you to take a 10 second pause to regain focus. After 50 minutes it reminds you to take a 10 minutes break to help you stay energized and alert.

“ME–TIME” Try to set aside at least 30 minutes out of your day for yourself to do something you love: take a nap, paint your nails, play a video game, watch Netflix (Watch, not binge), etc.

SLEEP! If you’re feeling sleep deprived during the day, take a little tiger snooze.

DON’T FORGET! Relax, you’re going to do great!

BREATH2RELAX An app to help you distress and take a break is Breath2Relax. This app helps users to calm down by using different breathing exercises. The app can guide you through breathing exercises to learn diaphragmatic breathing and provides information on how stress affects the body.

SLEEPBOT Another app to help you combat stress is SleepBot. This app tracks your sleep cycles. It breaks down your sleep history by date, sleep and wake time, hours of sleep, and the amount of sleep you lost. It also will wake you up gently in the morning before your exams. Now you are geared with the right tools to successfully study for all your exams. Best of luck Spartans! Your Humble Abode 42%

Where is your favorite place to study?

x study tips & tricks

Dorm Lounges/Study Rooms 25% Main Library 20% Coffee Shops 10%

x sparty’s study snacks For some, cramming for hours and hours is the hardest part of studying; for others, it’s battling the hunger while cramming. So in order to help you combat that hunger, we’ve compiled a list of alternative healthy snacks for you to munch on!

CELERY WITH PEANUT BUTTER What better snack than one that has negative calories? The act of eating celery burns more calories than the celery has in it! Peanut butter unfortunately does not. However, dip your celery in peanut butter and you’ll not only see gains in the library but in the gym as well.

TRAIL MIX Easy and affordable. You can buy trail mix almost anywhere for fairly cheap. The assorted nuts and dried fruit are full of healthy fats that fuel your brain. Challenge: Try not to eat all the M&Ms all at once!

SLICED APPLES WITH COTTAGE CHEESE Hear us out. If you haven’t tried this yet, you should. It’s a perfect combination of salty and sweet and is extremely healthy!

POPCORN Did you know that air-popped popcorn is one of the healthiest snacks you can have? Of course, only if it isn’t drenched in butter or caramel.

What’s your favorite study snack? Chips (29%)

Coffee (29%)

Popcorn (18%)

Pizza (12%)

Carrot Sticks (8%)

Candy (4%)

HUMMUS WITH ANY VEGETABLE Let’s face it, hummus is the best. It’s tasty and healthy but a bit expensive. We suggest eating it with a crunchy vegetable like bell peppers or carrots.

GREEK YOGURT Greek yogurt is high in protein and will help hold you over during those long hours at the library. Try adding granola to your favorite yogurt for a crunchy texture and added benefits!

CHEERIOS Yes, Cheerios. A common household product that can be eaten with or without milk. Since you’ll be focused on studying, we recommend having a zip lock bag full of them to snack on. It’s true, they do help lower your cholesterol and are a good source of fiber!

TH E STATE N E WS

x ways to celebrate exams Finals week takes a toll on everybody. After pulling all-nighters, eating fast food, and using every extra ounce of your energy to cram that last bit of information into your brain, you’re sure to be exhausted. We’ve made it easy for you so you don’t have to use any more of your brainpower to decide how to celebrate and recuperate after this year’s finals week. Check out this list of possible activities and don’t be afraid to indulge in more than one!

TAKE A NAP Try not to sleep for more than a few days…

Finals week always brings out the best sweats, yoga pants, and t-shirts that East Lansing has to offer. This year is no exception. We are taking to the streets to hear from our local fashionistas about what to expect during this year’s finals week.

INDULGE IN YOUR FAVORITE FOODS Grab a pizza, maybe some Conrad’s, and fuel yourself back to normal.

GO SHOPPING Retail therapy is real.

HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY

YOGA PANTS This style always has a place on the runway during finals week, but this year they’re taking a new turn. Switch out your plain black yogas for some color and patterns and you’ll be sure to stand out during every trip to the library!

Chill out with some of your favorite people and enjoy the company of humans instead of your textbooks.

JOGGER PANTS

Some swear by the relaxation of not being connected to their phones for at least a portion of the day. Your Twitter followers will be OK!

This new take on the typical sweat pants is really in right now. You get all the comfort with all of the style! And you don’t have to worry about them dragging on the floor.

DETACH FROM TECHNOLOGY

OVERSIZED SWEATSHIRTS These are essential for layering during long hours spent at the library. You never know if those librarians are cranking the heat or if you’ll be shivering at your desk. They’re also great for tucking your head and arms into for a quick catnap.

BASEBALL CAPS No one has time for showers during finals week and baseball caps are the perfect way to cover up that greasy hair! Add this to any outfit and you’re good to go!

TENNIS SHOES Finals week footwear is very important. Tennis shoes are perfect for that quick walk during your cram session to clear your head. And they go perfectly with your yoga pants or joggers! We hope everyone has a great finals week and stays fashionable! Stay tuned for next year’s event!
