New growth landmark By Charlene Macaulay It’s official: Wyndham’s population has outstripped that of Geelong for the first time, and is on target to maintain its new status as the second-largest city in the state. Wyndham is currently home to 250,186 people – up from the greater Geelong population of 247,068, according to population data experts .id Consulting. Between 2011 and 2016, Wyndham’s population jumped 37 per cent, growing an average 12,000 new residents every year. On top of that, about 86 babies are born in the area every week. Geelong’s population has grown by 11 per cent over the same period.

’’

Wyndham’s population is now second only to the City of Casey, which has 332,981. And the growth shows no signs of slowing. By 2028, Wyndham’s population is tipped to reach 332,857 people and by 2036, more than 435,000 people are expected to call Wyndham home. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard called on the state government to establish a new region, called the Wyndham, Avalon and Geelong City-Rural Region, to make a priority of investment in the fast-growing region and help attract investment in both areas. “It’s time that governments shifted focus away from the CBD and inner-city suburbs, towards the regions in Victoria that have the most to offer,” Cr Maynard said. “Wyndham and other growth areas around the country on the urban boundaries must be considered as regions within their own right. We hold some of the keys to be hubs for jobs, transport, education and freight and industrial movements. “Being one of Australia’s fastest growing municipalities is a major challenge, not a badge of honour. “It’s crazy to think that a municipality on Melbourne’s urban fringe is now bigger than the second largest city in Victoria.” Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood could not be contacted for comment. A spokesman for state planning minister Richard Wynne said the government was taking Wyndham’s population growth seriously. “We’re building the roads, schools and

hospitals that Victorians in growth suburbs need, and we’re ensuring developers who build new communities are giving back to the neighbourhoods they’re helping create,” he said. “We know that population growth offers great opportunities for communities provided we get the planning right – and we’re doing just that.” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said he would continue to welcome Wyndham council’s ideas. “The municipality of Wyndham is one of the fastest growing regions, which is why the Andrews Labor government continues to deliver vital infrastructure,” he said. ■ More

Fireys honoured for charity work

By Alesha Capone

The Werribee CFA has been recognised for donating more than $1 million to the Good Friday Appeal. Members and volunteers from the CFA branch (which is also known as the Werribee Fire Brigade) were presented with a plaque commemorating their achievement last Wednesday. The brigade reached the $1 million donation milestone after last year’s appeal. The Werribee CFA has been involved in fundraising for the Good Friday Appeal, an annual fundraiser for The Royal Children’s Hospital, for more than 40 years. The brigade became involved in the appeal after two prominent Wyndham families, the Chamberlains and the Tooheys, asked for help to collect donations. The families, who had been collecting funds for the appeal for years, approached the brigade as the Werribee township had grown too big for them to cover alone. Werribee Fire Brigade Lieutenant Darryl Wells said about 160 volunteers helped with the appeal every year. Last year more than 500 volunteers took part, raising more than $79,138. The brigade will also take part in this year’s Good Friday Appeal, which will be held on Friday, March 30. See www.goodfridayappeal.com.au or facebook.com/goodfriappeal for details. Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre has stepped in to help Mambourin Disability Services following the theft of new gardening equipment. A commercial lawn mower, a blower, a whipper-snipper and fuel cans, with an estimated value of about $1000, were stolen from a trailer as VCAL trainees from Mambourin visited the shopping centre for a meal about 11.20am on February 12. The Mambourin-branded bus, which had a trailer full of gardening gear attached to it, was parked in the centre’s carpark. Mambourin offers students with disabilities a chance to complete traineeships in horticulture or warehousing. Mambourin horticulture supervisor Rhys Davies said the trainees were on their way to update turf at the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Course when the equipment was stolen, meaning they could not complete the job. Mr Davies said the VCAL trainees discovered the theft when they returned to the bus. “It’s just so disheartening for the team – the kids work hard,” Mr Davies said. “To have this happen, it just doesn’t seem fair.” Last week, a Star Weekly online story about the theft was seen by Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre manager Emily Grass. “I was heartbroken when I heard that their equipment had been stolen from their work vehicle,” she said. She said the was pleased to be able to give Mambourin $1000 in Bunnings vouchers to replace the stolen gear and continue its great work. Police are investigating the theft. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Mum terrorised in drive-through By Alesha Capone A mother has spoken of the terror she felt when youths threw rocks at her car in Sanctuary Lakes, smashing the vehicle’s windscreen and causing glass to fall on her daughter. Erika Folker said she was leaving the McDonald’s on Jamieson Way about 4.20pm last Monday (February 12) when the incident occurred. Ms Folker said as she went to drive out of the McDonald’s, she saw three youths on bicycles, who were blocking the exit.

After she asked them to move out of the way, the youths allegedly threw rocks at her car as she drove away. The rocks smashed the rear windscreen of the vehicle, causing glass shards to shower around her two-year-old daughter, who was in the back of the car. “I immediately jumped out of the car and opened the back door to check if my daughter was alright, Ms Folker said. “At that moment she was the only thing that was going through my head and I was absolutely horrified.

Ms Folker said that her daughter was not injured by the glass, although one large piece landed about 30 centimetres from her. Ms Folker said she immediately contacted police to report the incident. Police confirmed they are investigating and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward. One of the alleged offenders is described as Caucasian, in his mid-teens with a thin face. The other two alleged offenders are described as being of an Islander background. Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

Centre keeps its Kool By Charlene Macaulay Kool Kidz Tarneit will reopen its doors this weekend, eight months on from the fatal car crash that destroyed the childcare centre. The centre, which was demolished when a car that was already on fire veered off the road and ploughed into the building in the early hours of June 5, has since undergone a complete rebuild. It will make its triumphant return with an open day this Saturday before resuming operations next Monday.

It was a community, it was a family, it was a - Samantha Johnson home

’’

“So many people wanted this service back and up and running, and I realised that it wasn’t just a business; it was a community, it was a family, it was a home,” Kool Kidz owner Samantha Johnson said. Ms Johnson said the events of that fateful morning were still crystal clear in her memory. “When I turned the corner down Hogans Road, all I saw was flames really high in the sky and I remember being across the road and feeling the heat. “I pulled over my car, got out and saw one of my educators outside crying, and then I collapsed with shock.” Despite her initial shock, Ms Johnson swung into crisis mode and by 6am had contacted all the staff and families to explain what had happened and tell parents not to bring their kids in. The Kool Kidz staff spent the rest of that day working out of the neighbouring Good News Lutheran College office to speak with families in more detail.

Kool Kidz owner Samantha Johnson can’t wait to get back into her rebuilt centre. (Damjan Janevski)

The Johnsons also held two emergency meetings that day with all of the families and by the end of the day, two centres in the area – Bluebird Early Education and Sparrow Early Learning – had agreed to take on every child and every employee while Kool Kidz rebuilt. The pair have also hosted playgroups twice a

week, and weekend events every three weeks so that Kool Kidz families could stay in touch. Ms Johnson said the support of the community had been invaluable. “It pushed me to keep on doing my best and make sure that this was on target and open as soon as possible.”

Kinder funding certainty call Wyndham council has called on the federal government to commit to ongoing kindergarten funding after the government announced a funding extension last week. The federal government will continue to provide a share of kindergarten funding until the end of 2019. Wyndham learning city portfolio holder Josh Gilligan welcomed the funding, but said it was time for the federal government to make an ongoing commitment to ensure all children had access to 15 hours a week of preschool education in the year before beginning school. “It’s not good enough,” he said. “It’s just unstable – we need funding certainty.” Lalor MP Joanne Ryan echoed Cr Gilligan’s sentiments. “It’s kicking the can down the road and not allowing those sectors to plan properly,” she said. “We can’t afford for investors to be going, ‘We’re not interested in building long day care centres with high-quality, early education in our community’. We really need investment in that space to keep up with that growing population. “Attracting and retaining high-quality staff is really key to your performance … you cannot attract and retain high-quality staff on a six-month turnaround. “It just builds risk into a system that we can’t afford in an area where 86 babies are being born a week.” Charlene Macaulay

Pop-up park a pain, say traders By Charlene Macaulay Station Place traders are calling for Werribee’s pop-up park to be discontinued or relocated in the future, saying the six-week experiment had been bad for business. A number of traders told Star Weekly last week of their fury at Wyndham council’s decision to close 22 carparking spaces in Station Place to accommodate the pop-up park, with many saying that it had driven loyal customers away. Paul Camilleri, from Station Place Meats, said the business would be down $40,000 in turnover by the time the park closes on Sunday. He said the business had closed its doors early on occasions and reduced staff hours. “It’s affected us really bad,” he said. “We’ve had a few people come in and say it’s too far to walk with parcels of meat.” Val Grasso, from Station Place Florist, said the business had suffered its slowest Valentine’s Day trade ever this year. “If the council decides to make [the park] permanent, there will be vacant stores,” she said. However, other traders remain in support of the park, including Phat Tao, who has owned Aussie Fashion for the past 18 years. He would like to see the park become a permanent feature. “It’s safer for people coming here, working around here,” he said. Wyndham council city economy director Kate Roffey said carparking had been a key consideration when planning the park. She said the response to the pop-up park had been overwhelmingly positive from residents, visitors and traders. “At this stage, it is too early to indicate if it will become an annual feature or if the location will change,” she said.

Tarneit cooks up a real treat A world of flavours and traditions will be on Tarneit’s menu next month when a new night market makes the area home. Wyndham council will host the inaugural market on Friday, March 23, on the grounds of the Penrose Promenade Community Centre. Arts, culture and heritage portfolio holder Tony Hooper is calling on residents and businesses to get involved. He said the market would embrace tastes and traditions from all over the world, ranging from Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, to henna body art, lion dancing and homemade crafts. “This is the first time we’ve ever held this event in Tarneit,” he said. “The concept is to emulate the variety enjoyed at city night markets with crafts, food and music – but with a unique neighbourhood feel, providing local musicians, artisans and businesses with an opportunity to showcase their work while providing residents with free family entertainment close to home. “With such rich cultural diversity in Wyndham, we have an opportunity to create a unique market experience featuring tastes, crafts and music from around the world.” The market will run 6-9pm. Kevin Hillier considers friends and foes

W

hen Michael Corleone said “Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer” in the Godfather Part II movie, he may have been speaking about any number of life’s relationships. The trick these days is telling the two apart, especially as our definition of friend has become blurred thanks to social media. Is a Facebook friend a real friend? In some cases they might be more of a true friend than those you see every day. Where do workplace friendships sit in the scheme of things? Many industries are transient and friendships fleeting, which is where the connection via Facebook etc allows for contact to continue. I remember seeing the crestfallen face of a work colleague of mine some years back when his on-air partner told him they were not real friends, just work acquaintances. We make friends when we play sport. Those friendships are forged in achieving a common goal and celebrating the spoils of victory or defeat. School friends who remain in contact seem to stand the test of time.

I am intrigued by those people who categorise their friends into groups. This week a friend of mine saw Valentine’s Day as a chance to wish his gay friends all the best now that they could embrace their relationships with a legal marriage. While I echo the sentiment, I don’t have a file in my friends folder marked gay friends. I just have friends. Their sexual preference is about as relevant to me as their hair colour. Real friends accept us for what we are, because they know our good points and our faults. They are to be cherished, not labelled and placed in a conveniently marked area. We sometimes think we are better friends with people than they do, and this can lead to a lot of pain and anxiety. While it is important to know your friends from your enemies, it is equally important to know who your real friends are. How many times have you heard someone say “Now I know who my real friends are” almost always after a turbulent time in their life? Maybe Michael Corleone now would just keep his close friends. ■

Danny Marando has been working with Australia Post for 30 years. (Damjan Janevski)

Milestone for mail man After 30 years, it’s fair to say Danny Marando has left his stamp on Australia Post. When Mr Marando started working at the Highpoint post office on December 7, 1987, he didn’t realise he had signed, sealed (and delivered) on his working life for the next three decades. “I left school without knowing my VCE results, and made Australia Post home – and I’ve been there ever since,” the 48-year-old Hoppers Crossing resident said. Mr Marando, who is now a postal manager, worked at a number of branches across the west before being deployed in 2001 to Werribee’s Watton Street branch – where he’s been ever since.

He even met his wife, Rosie, through work. Rosie, who also works at the Werribee branch, has notched up 22 years with the company, but as yet their two kids – aged 17 and 20 – hold no ambitions to join the team. “As a couple, we’ve given in excess of 50 years to the organisation,” Mr Marando said. “You never expect anything to continue for this long, but this has been a great company to work for. It’s been the place for me.” An Australia Post spokesperson said Mr Marando was one of 495 Australia Post employees across the country to have reached the 30-year milestone in the past 12 months. By Charlene Macaulay Twenty-five new kindergartens, 20 primary schools and six high schools will be needed in Wyndham by 2036 to cope with the area’s burgeoning young population, according to Wyndham council. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard has called on both the state and federal governments to be “visionary” and “lead a new agenda that prioritises investment in fast-growing areas like Wyndham”. “In the lead-up to the 2018-19 Victorian budget, we’re calling on the state government to fund the early planning and land acquisition for seven new primary schools, one specialist school and two secondary schools,” Cr Maynard said. “We’ve also called for the construction of a senior secondary college, two primary schools and five early years family learning centres.” Other items on the council’s state and federal government budget wishlists include two new Regional Rail Link stations, at Black Forest Road and Davis Road; support services for the Wyndham Justice Precinct; and the Western Interstate Freight Terminal. To date, Wyndham has received more than $20.8 million from the state government’s Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution for projects such as CFA stations in Wyndham Vale and Truganina and land acquisitions for two schools and ambulance stations. It has also received $14.7 million from the Growing

Suburbs Fund for 10 other projects, including the Chirnside Park redevelopment and the Wyndham Aboriginal Community Centre. But a state government Plan Melbourne document outlines developinging Geelong as Victoria’s second city as a priority, along with planning the non-urban break between Melbourne and Geelong.

“The Avalon Corridor Strategy will provide direction for land-use planning that addresses landscape and environmental issues as well as long-term planning protection for Avalon Airport, the potential development of a port facility at Bay West and state-significant transport corridors,” the document states. “This is a joint initiative between the Cities of Greater Geelong and Wyndham, with support from Regional Development Victoria.” Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said she would like to see federal Stronger Regions Grants reinstated for Wyndham. “We shouldn’t be using infrastructure projects as a way to influence votes,” she said. “Infrastructure projects should happen because they’re good ideas, they stack up economically and environmentally … we need to be planning much more strategically.”

Boom time in the bubs business As Wyndham’s population continues to boom, so is the number of babies being born to parents and families who call the area home. Werribee Mercy Hospital is currently providing care to 3800 mothers a year. A record 3781 babies, including 21 sets of twins, were born at Werribee Mercy in the 2015-16 financial year, with an almost even split of genders (52.2 per cent boys, 47.8 per cent girls). That was up from 3711 bubs in 2015-16, 3144 in 2014-15 and 2739 in 2013-14. Mercy Health health services chief executive Linda Mellors said the hospital was expecting to deliver, on average, 321 babies each month in 2017-18. Adjunct Professor Mellors said Wyndham’s fast-growing population had resulted in greater demand for maternity services. She said an eight-bed Critical Care Unit being built at Werribee Mercy, as part of an $85 million expansion, would provide additional care for maternity patients when it opened next year. “Mercy Health continues to work with the Department of Health and Human Services regarding future service needs for the region,” Adjunct Professor Mellors said. “We expect to increase our maternity and newborn services as our facilities are expanded in the future.” In addition, the maternity section and special-care nursery of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee is set to open on Monday (February 26). To date, 50 women are booked in to have their babies delivered at the hospital between this month and September. A spokeswoman said the first babies to be born at the hospital were expected to be delivered in March. Elyse Munari with seven-month-old son Ace. (Joe Mastroianni)

The new $3 million Ambulance Victoria branch in Tarneit has been opened by the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Jill Hennessy. On Friday, Ms Hennessy visited the Bethany Way station, which has been operating since October last year, and met many of the 30 advanced life support and MICA paramedics based at the station. Before moving to the Tarneit branch, the paramedics worked from a converted factory in Hoppers Crossing. Ms Hennessy said she was “very excited” to be given a tour of the new Tarneit station which includes four ambulance bays, six bedrooms and a training room. “We know that in the Wyndham area, we’re seeing extraordinary growth, and it is

important that we continue to make sure these growing communities have access to the sorts of facilities and services they need,” she said. “This is a wonderful branch, the paramedics do a fantastic job, they’re improved their response times to this local community by over 20 per cent in the last three years, and they’re working hard to keep our community safe.” Ambulance Victoria metro-west group manager Graeme Parker said paramedics appreciated the support the state government was providing by funding the new Tarneit station. “The government is enabling us to be the most effective in our responsiveness to community needs and clinical outcomes,” he said. Writer unites women

Council appy to go it alone

By Tate Papworth One woman’s passion for writing and love for life is playing a role in uniting women in the western suburbs. Alyssa Ho’s inspirational quotes on love and life have evolved into a popular enterprise that has grown from social media to real-time meetings. “I had a friend tell me that I should share my posts on social media, so I created an Instagram account and it took off,” Ms Ho said. “It really connected with people. I’ve accumulated over 14,000 followers and an article I wrote for Elite Daily has been shared over a million times.” Ms Ho said that while it was nice to see her work well supported, it was the connection with her audience that continued to inspire her. “I’ve never really placed any expectation on what I write, but when I see so many people relate to my work, it’s incredibly rewarding. I’m always trying to connect with people.” With a loyal fan base behind her, Ms Ho, of Deer Park, has been able to turn the venture into a support platform for women. “I noticed when I was writing, that most of the people who were sending me messages and asking for advice were women,” she said. “A lot of these women didn’t have anyone else to go to for advice, so I got thinking about ways to bring everyone together.” From that idea came My Go To Gal, a support network that provides a great space for participants to make new friends. My Go To Gal began as a private Facebook group in which women could ask each other for advice and post inspirational quotes each day. The group now has more than 2500 members. After seeing friendships forming, Club 23 at Crown invited the group to host a meet-up and cocktail party last April.

Since then the group has had two brunches in Melbourne and an official launch party attended by more than 150 women. The group will hold its next get together this weekend.

“My overall goal is to bring women together as it breaks my heart to know that there are girls who feel alone, ostracised and don’t have many friends to confide in,” Ms Ho said. Details: instagram.com/alyssahowritings

Wyndham residents will soon be able to report pot holes, broken playground equipment and other issues to council through an online request app that is under development. The council is set to launch its request app in the next six to eight weeks. It will allow residents to lodge service complaints and the like in a quick, easy way. Many Wyndham residents have been lodging complaints through the app Snap Send Solve, which allows its users to take a photo of a problem – such as a pot hole – and have it sent to the relevant council or body for resolution. City life director Jenny McMahon said that while the council did not have an agreement in place with Snap Send Solve, it acted on any requests that came through. However, the council was recently informed by Snap Send Solve that it would have to pay an annual $12,800 fee for the service to continue. Ms McMahon said the council’s in-house app would offer residents and the council a more efficient service. “We are unable to confirm how much the app will cost to develop and run,” she said. “However, we expect to be able to minimise this by developing it internally by utilising the great skills and abilities we have at council.” In the meantime, requests can be logged via bit.ly/2fDOycb Charlene Macaulay

If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of fire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a fire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are. Grassfires are unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

Progress is in the bags By Charlene Macaulay Single-use plastic bags will soon be a thing of the past at Woolworths in Wyndham Vale. The store will be among the first in Australia to go plastic bag-free – on April 4 – following a commitment by the supermarket chain to remove single-use plastic bags from all of its stores by June 30. Wyndham Vale, Taylors Lakes and Toorak

will be the first three Victorian stores to make the change. After April 4, shoppers can bring in their own bags for their groceries or purchase a range of reusable bag options starting from 15 cents. Wyndham Vale store manager Zoran Nikolovski said the move would mean 3.2 billion fewer single-use plastic bags being used by Woolworths every year.

“I’m really proud that Wyndham Vale will be among the first stores in Victoria to play our part in reducing plastic bag usage,” he said. “The Woolworths Wyndham Vale team continues to work hard to minimise our impact on the environment through various initiatives, including the minimisation of food waste. Our customers can also expect further commitments in reducing plastic throughout the store, particularly in fruit and vegetables.”

An Environment Protection Authority officer is helping Wyndham council respond to issues such as illegal dumping. Local environment protection officer Michelle Walker began working with the council last week. Under a $4.8 million state government pilot program, 11 EPA officers have been signed up to assist several Victorian municipalities with responding to smaller-scale and low-risk waste and pollution, illegal dumping, litter and noise, dust and odour complaints arising from business and industry. Ms Walker’s duties will include information and education activities to support the prevention of pollution and inspections of premises. Ms Walker was welcomed to Wyndham last week by mayor Peter Maynard, environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus and western region MP Cesar Melhem. Alesha Capone

Siose, Lotoese, mum Pesi, Susana and Losalini hit the road. (Damjan Janevski)

Saddle up for health A love of cycling has helped Wyndham Vale mother Pesi Elisaia to transform her life. Ms Elisaia said that two years ago, she felt tired and depressed a lot of the time. But when a cousin told her about Building Blocks, a leadership course run by Victoria Polytechnic in collaboration with Wyndham council, she decided to join the program. The 10-week initiative was focused on walking, cycling, and skating. For one of the course assignments, Ms Elisaia and two other women started the Tricycle 4 Life community project, to encourage people to take up tricycling. The women renamed their project Cycle 4 Life due to the number of people asking to learn how to ride bicycles.

Through funding from the VicRoads Community Road Safety Grants program, Cycle 4 Life started to run bicycle riding classes in partnership with the Werribee Men’s Shed. Ms Elisaia also bought a bicycle, became an accredited bicycle instructor and learnt about basic bike maintenance. “I have more energy now and I believe in myself,” Ms Elisaia said. Ms Elisaia’s children have also followed in her footsteps and now volunteer at the Werribee Men’s Shed, where they help to fix up bicycles. For more information about Cycle 4 Life classes, call Christine Morris on 0409 521 998 or cstorie@optusnet.com.au. Alesha Capone

Blow-up in inflatable castle world By Cameron Houston and Adam Cooper/The Age One of Melbourne’s biggest party-hire operators has faced allegations of arson, insurance fraud and launching cyber attacks on competitors during a committal hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court last week. Awesome Party Hire owner James Balcombe, 53, is accused of inciting and paying two men to torch rival businesses last year. According to a former employee, Mr Balcombe was desperate to dominate the

jumping castle market, which had been flooded by copycats. Two of the arsonists pleaded guilty last year and were given reduced prison sentences after agreeing to testify against Mr Balcombe. Giving evidence from prison via videolink, they claimed to have been offered $2000 by Mr Balcombe for each blaze, when they met at cafes in Melbourne’s north-east. A third man, Travis Ransom, of Greensborough, pleaded guilty to four charges in the Magistrates Court last week over his role as a driver in some of the arson attacks.

The fires caused more than $2 million of damage to businesses in Hallam, Tullamarine, Keysborough, Werribee and Warragul. Another blaze at a Hoppers Crossing factory almost wiped out one of Mr Balcombe’s biggest competitors, A & A Jumping Castles. The court was told Mr Balcombe became aware police had linked the attacks on party hire businesses after speaking with a friend involved in a relationship with a police officer. He allegedly hatched a plan to burn his own premises to distract police and fraudulently collect an $800,000 insurance payout.

Detective Senior Sergeant Thomas McGowan told the court that Mr Balcombe had trolled the website of a rival party hire business making several threats against the business and demeaning comments about the owner’s wife. A former employee of Mr Balcombe claimed a consultant had been paid $1000 to remove competitors’ websites or change their rankings on the search engine, Google. Mr Balcombe maintained his innocence during last week’s committal hearing and will stand trial in the County Court later this year on 10 arson-related charges.

Time to adopt a pet homes not shelters. “The $29 fee is nowhere near what it costs to prepare an animal for adoption, but if we can get hundreds of pets into permanent homes then that’s a really worthwhile investment,” she said. All adoption animals are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, health and behaviour checked and adoption procedures will ensure each animal is matched to the right family. The adoption blitz is on between Friday and Sunday, February 23-25. Further details: rspcavic.org/adoption Benjamin Millar

A three-day adoption blitz will begin this Friday as RSPCA Victoria seeks to house about 1000 pets in desperate need of a home. The RSPCA ‘Clear the Shelter’ promotion will offer $29 adoptions of dogs, cats, guinea pigs and rabbits. The drastically cut price will be on offer from Friday to Sunday at all seven RSPCA Victoria animal care centres and participating Petbarn stores. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker said the promotion aims to find forever homes for animals currently in RSPCA care. “We monitor adoption promotions carefully and have found that the price someone pays to acquire an animal has no impact on return rates and no negative impact on the animal’s welfare,” she said. Dr Walker said RSPCA Victoria does not have a limit on how long an animal can remain in its care, but believes that pets belong in

The Huddle (a not-for-profit initiative of the North Melbourne Football Club) and Wyndham council have joined forces to run the Active Boys and Active Girls program. North Melbourne Football Club community engagement general manager Cameron McLeod said the free sessions would be aimed at residents aged from 12 to 25. “A key focus of these programs is to develop and empower young leaders so they can build the skills and confidence to take on volunteer roles facilitating the Active Boys and Active Girls program themselves,” Mr McLeod said. Presidents Park will explode with colour next month when the fourth annual Wyndham Holi Festival comes to town. About 15,000 people are expected to attend the free event, which will run on March 3 from 11am-9pm and include a traditional chariot procession performed by members of the Iskcon Temple, a colour fun run, carnival rides, dancing, food and market stalls. The traditional Hindu celebration of Holi signifies the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere.

Victorian Cultural Association president and festival organiser Vinayakk Kolaape said the alcohol-free family-friendly event celebrated not just Indian culture, but all nationalities. “The main objective of this event is to spread the message of peace and harmony, celebrate through the vibrant colors of the festival, and present an exquisite picture of multicultural Australia,” he said. How long have you been driving for West Suburban? I was driving part-time from 1983, so over 35 years. I have been full-time with my own car since 1985. What do you like most about driving for West Suburban? Back in the day, it was one of the most respected jobs you could have, driving corporate clients and shift workers around. I enjoy getting out on the road and meeting new people. Taxi driving is in your blood. What makes a good driver? You need to know where you’re going and always be polite on the road. If your customer has something to put in the boot, get out and help them. Go that extra distance to give perfect service every time. What was the first car you drove for West Suburban? An XD Ford Falcon. Now I drive a Camry Hybrid.

Mustafa Fikret “Freddy”

How long have you been driving for West Suburban? Since 1985 – so over 33 years. What do you like most about driving for West Suburban? When your passenger gets out of the car and thanks you – that’s the most rewarding thing for me. We get to meet so many different customers on our day-to-day travels. What makes a good driver? Know the roads and best ways to go so that you can get your customer there easier and cheaper. Always be clean and respectable. It’s important to give the best service, the same way every time. What was the first car you drove for West Suburban? HQ Holden.

Nursing a long career By Alesha Capone Marg Daly began working as a nurse at the Werribee Mercy Hospital when it opened 24 years ago. She is now the associate nurse unit manager of the hospital’s emergency department. Her role involves co-ordinating the flow of patients through the department, allocating beds, arranging transfers to other hospitals and doing the rosters for about 60 staff. She also communicates with other medical workers to continue a patient’s care, working with doctors, nurses, environmental services, ward clerks, physiotherapists, care co-ordinators and other allied departments. “I like interacting with people, I’ve got a natural desire to help people,” Ms Daly said. “Each day is different in the emergency department, we see people at their most vulnerable, so it’s a very stressful environment.” Ms Daly said when she started working at the hospital, she knew each staff member. She said that nowadays, while she still knows a lot of employees, it would be impossible to know each one by name because of the constantly growing workforce at Werribee Mercy. “We have a great team, I love the team here,” she said. Ms Daly said she enjoyed mentoring young staff who came to work at the hospital. Werribee Mercy Hospital is undertaking a recruitment drive ahead of its $85 million redevelopment, due for completion later this year. The hospital is searching for emergency nurses, mental health nurses and midwives, as well as people who are interested in other roles, such as in administrative and clinical fields. Mayoral Column You may have heard recently that Wyndham’s population has overtaken Greater Geelong’s, surpassing 250,000 for the first time ever. This may be a major milestone, but it is an equally major challenge. As most Wyndham residents know, many of our roads are congested and our public transport is far from adequate. But we also need many more schools and kindergartens to keep up with the growth we’re experiencing. We’ve called on the State Government to fund the early planning and land acquisition for seven new primary schools, one specialist school and two secondary schools. We’ve also called for the construction of a senior secondary college, two primary schools and five early years or family learning centres. We can’t tackle our growing pains alone, which is why we need to cooperate with Geelong and plan alongside them so we can grow better together and attract investment that’s good for us both. That’s why we you may have seen me advocating for Wyndham, Avalon and Geelong to be recognised as a region in its own right. We want to drive State and Federal Government investment in this area and we need to show them that they cannot afford to waste time on this issue. Over the coming weeks and months I’ll be meeting with any and every politician that will listen to me in order to sell the potential of our great City and let them know why they should be looking towards us for the future. Werribee team is a cut above the rest Butcher Tony Nestorovski learned his trade from top-class mentors in an old-school shop. He did his apprenticeship at Werribee Station Street Meats, learning from Nunzio Materia and Paul Camilleri. These days, he runs the cherished local business with Paul. Werribee Station Street Meats continues to grow and prosper by staying true to the time-tested combination of quality produce and traditional customer service. “We have a strong focus on hand-picked produce and customer service,” Tony says. “We employ a professional who scours the state for the best cuts – this is a real point of difference for us. “We are really passionate about having the freshest meat and the best cuts. “We know this is what makes our customers come back every week.

“Our produce has a very short passage between farm and plate, which makes our job more satisfying and also makes your meals more enjoyable.” Customer service is a top priority for the team of four butchers, who always take the time to work with customers, sharing new meal ideas and even sourcing special products. “As Werribee Station Street Meats has been part of the community for 26 years, we really know our customers and enjoy getting to know new members of the community,” Tony says. All meats stocked are Victorian-sourced, ensuring freshness and quality. The business offers a home delivery service on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Bra brothers Mario Muraca (front) with Ian Domoney and Pat Preston.

Great support for charity It started out as a joke, and turned into an unlikely fundraiser. Bruno’s Deli and Cafe in Werribee has been displaying bras for the past year in a unique bid to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. It all started when customer Ian Domoney was in the cafe with a group of friends and the group decided to play a prank on owner Mario Muraca. The men threw an old bra up next to a display of tea towels and aprons and waited to see how long it would take Mr Muraca to notice. “It was just for a bit of fun,” Mr Domoney said.

The West Gate Tunnel will get you moving again. While we build your alternative to the West Gate Bridge, there will be changed conditions and reduced speed limits on the West Gate Freeway, so plan ahead. This project will: • widen the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 lanes • provide direct access from the West Gate Freeway to the CBD and CityLink • slash congestion from Geelong to Pakenham • create 6,000 jobs.

Mr Muraca said it took him a couple of days before he noticed the bras, then he decided to keep them up and encourage other customers to throw their old bras up too. “Breast cancer touches all people in one way or another,” he said. Mr Muraca said many customers were initially confused to see the bras, but many thought it was a great idea. The prank raised more than $260 for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. “Now we have to do something for the men,” Mr Muraca said. Charlene Macaulay

MY WYNDHAM Erum Ali is a proud Pakistan-born woman who moved to Australia five years ago with her daughter. Ms Ali is dedicated to spreading peace and goodwill. She is co-ordinator of the Wyndham Welcome Dinner Project. She chats with Charlene Macaulay. What is your connection to Wyndham?

My daughter was insisting that I throw her a birthday party, which was on the same day of the dinner. They organised some gifts for my daughter and … after attending the dinner I was emotional and excited to work with them.

I came to Australia five years back, along with my daughter, Anosha. In 2015, one of my community members invited me at her home in Tarneit. I found new construction all around and felt like I was visiting the real Australia – modern, developed and multicultural. I liked the big roads, open areas, newly built houses and, most of all, the beautifully designed Tarneit station. The Princes Highway from Werribee station towards Old Geelong Road reminds me of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. When I travelled for the first time that way, I had feelings of belonging and relaxation.

You actively help run a number of other multicultural and interfaith initiatives. Why is this so important to you? When I came to Australia, I started cooking for open-table community lunches as a volunteer. When people started appreciating Pakistani food, I felt like an ambassador of Pakistan in Australia. I also have dialogues about Islam with a number of people of different faiths. I found rudeness, hate, lack of knowledge and huge misconceptions about Islam due to misleading international media. I feel it’s my responsibility to spread awareness and actual knowledge about Islam by being a role model and talking with people and spreading peace and love to make this world a better place.

Tell me about your family. I am a single mum – a bold, modern and revolutionary Pakistani Australian lady, mother of 10-year-old Anosha. My parents are in Pakistan. I am the first and the only woman of my family and my extended families who is living alone and overseas.

What are your hobbies outside of work and volunteering?

What is your day job? I got my first job in one of the top three banks of Australia and since then I have been working there. You are also co-ordinator of the Welcome Dinner Project. Tell me about it. The Welcome Dinner Project was started in 2013 in Sydney when [the founder Penny]

Last Friday, February 10, will long be remembered by Werribee motorists as the night of “the blitz” when the streets seemed to be alive with police cars. More than 60 motorists were given a preliminary puff-bag test while others were detained and will be charged with a variety of traffic and other offences.

The completion of $700,000 worth of major renovations and extensions to the Werribee District Hospital will be marked this Saturday by a ceremony starting at 3pm. The building works have been extensive, the hospital’s chief executive officer, Mr John Williams, said this week, and affected almost every department of the hospital.

An $80 million housing development to be built in Forsyth Road, Point Cook, was unveiled by the Minister for Planning, Mr Maclellan, last week. Mr Maclellan made the revelation at a tree planting ceremony in Central Park, Hoppers Crossing, last Thursday, saying the Urban Land Corporation (ULC) had brought the 175-hectare block formally known as The Lakes.

Pressure from Planning Minister Justin Madden gave Wyndham Council no option but to approve the rezoning of land for a 2000-home estate west of Werribee on Monday night. The decision to approve the rezoning for the 197-hectare Riverwalk estate on former Melbourne Water land, home to Werribee’s B24 bomber, came despite grave concerns that the city will struggle to cope with resulting traffic chaos and the influx of 6000 residents.

This stunning property reveals its ownership by a talented artist in every aspect. Werribee local Janet Knight, known for her extraordinary artworks, has transformed what at first blush appears to be an average ’50s brick veneer into a home full of soul and understated elegance. The block of about 2685 square metres has beautifully landscaped gardens; a solar-heated pool; a tennis court; and a self-contained unit that works as a studio, guest quarters, business headquarters or a pool house with bifolds to deck and pool. The corner block is right across from the Werribee East precinct, giving it enormous

potential for future commercial/unit development. But, right now, it’s a truly wonderful place for a savvy house-hunting family. The house has three fitted bedrooms, the main with dressing room and a swish en suite with a marble “slab” vanity and giant walk-in shower. One bathroom links with the storage-rich laundry, while the other has a quirky ’50s-style glam. A carpeted sitting room, with gorgeous ornate cornices and leadlight french doors to the adjoining dining room, oozes elegance, while the informal family-meals space around the kitchen has a different

mood. Cornices remain, floors are in hardwood and large picture windows admit streams of light and provide perfect garden vignettes. It’s in this casual living part of the house where the clever reconfiguration is most clearly seen. The kitchen has slate floor tiles, scads of glossy white cabinetry, granite benches, a fab walk-in pantry, a Bosch concealed dishwasher and Miele cooking appliances. Playing on the ’50s theme, an arc of glass bricks backdrops an inground spa with mosaic tiling. This “room” is leafy and gorgeous, while a sauna and shower are tucked away here as well. much-used area and connects well with the family room. As well as a double carport with an intercom at garden-gate entry, there’s a double garage with storeroom and an adjoining carpeted study. Another huge garage is accessed separately. Enough can’t be said about the gardens and courtyards, which are an absolute delight. There’s also a raised terrace overlooking the glass-fenced pool and accessible from the family room. Do not miss this one … it’s special. Carole Levy 31 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 21, 2018

Moving house? Take the right mindset with you Anyone who has moved house will have no argument with its inclusion in the top-10 list of stressful life events. In fact, it sits just one peg lower than losing your job. Unless you’re a masochist or stress-lovin’ freak, no one – that’s no one – relishes the idea of all the hassle involved in packing up a life and moving out. But amid all that angst and effort, there are some benefits you might not have considered. Here are four to think upon: 1. Just like snakes, we sometimes need to shed dead skin to reveal a fresh way of gliding into our new address. It’s a time to get rid of dead weight, such as the hooley-dooley exercise bike we never use; the collection of frogs we treasured back in the day; the bread-maker we imagined producing loaves of sourdough goodness … you get the drift. Get practical and ruthless: it’s time for the Great Declutter we’ve always wanted. Keep only what still reflects who you really are.

3. Moving can sometimes mean leaving old acquaintances behind which, while sad, also gives you a chance to make new ones. People often complain about boredom with their ‘known world’, so moving into the unknown can galvanise you. Treat the move like a teenage crush, look anew for the good

(iStock)

2. One of the upsides to moving is that it takes you out of your comfort zone. Even moving away from your fave cafe and shops is a challenge, but a good one. It can force you to make new neighbourhood connections, negotiate new friendships at the school pick-up gate, discover new cultural mores. Evelyn Waugh once said: “Change is the only evidence of life.”

in people, view it as a new slate upon which to write a fresh future. 4. The chance for a mental reset is probably the greatest benefit of all. Clearing

out the old home’s detritus, stepping out of your comfort zone and connecting with new people and places all work to reset a complacent or tired mind. Actually moving is one huge pain in the backside – but what

you might not realise is that you’re giving your mind a chance to start over, expand and play with fresh thinking. Carole Levy

SPORT Warriors fumble chance at the top four

Point Cook middle order batsman Jack Bolam hears the death rattle. (Damian Visentini)

Point Cook will need to beat Williamstown Imperials in the final round at Fearon Reserve and hope one of those sides above it offers up another finals lifeline in the form of a loss. Wyndhamvale enjoyed a solid 58-run win over West Newport at Wyndham Vale Reserve.

The Falcons set up their win with a superb bowling display, routing Wests for 111, while David Buchanan and Craig Duff scored 37 apiece. In west A1, Bellbridge picked up its second win of the season, downing Footscray ANA by 30 runs. With only 159 to defend, the Bears restricted ANA to 129, thanks largely to Andrew Wilks, who took 5-32 off 19 overs. Seabrook had a comfortable 71-run first-innings victory over Gellibrand at Bruce Comben Reserve. Saints skipper Leigh Edwards led the way with 54. In north-west A1, Werribee Centrals struggled against ladder leader Westmeadows, losing outright by 10 wickets. -Lance Jenkinson

Bees caught napping By Lance Jenkinson Werribee City was left deflated by a 2-0 opening round loss to Altona Magic on the road at Paisley Park in the National Premier League 2 west on Saturday. The Bees were full of confidence after some impressive showings in warm-up matches, but that form did not eventuate against the Magic. For Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini, it was a disappointing outcome. “We had a fairly solid pre-season and we’ve been working really hard,” he said. “We finished up our pre-season campaign against an NPL side Kingston City and beat them 3-1, so we thought we were looking pretty good going into the season. “I’ve watched Altona Magic play a few times and while they’re solid, I thought they were beatable, but we just didn’t turn up. I probably had three contributors all day.” The Bees conceded both goals in the first half and both partly through their own making. The first came through a defensive error from the usually reliable Aki Machiyama. Machiyama was dispossessed of the ball just outside the penalty area and made to pay through Magic goalscorer Jon McShane. “He was our best and fairest winner from last year and you’d never expect him to make a mistake like that, but that happens,” Sabbadini said. “It did take the stuffing out of us a bit, but it was our own doing.” Then came the dagger for Werribee City. After dominating much of the play through the middle part of the first half, the Bees fell asleep in the seconds before half-time. McShane was once again the beneficiary, capping his game with a double. “After they scored their first goal, we had two or three chances to score,” Sabbadini said. “One, the keeper managed to get a hand to it, one the defender stopped it and one we didn’t get a shot off in time … we just didn’t take them. “The assistant referee put the board up with one minute on it before half-time and I think everyone just switched off. “It was our goal kick – he [Bees goalkeeper Tommy Dunn] kicked it to the halfway line and they won possession, played it forward and scored while we were just sitting around watching.” Sabbadini is hopeful the performance is just a blip for the Bees and that they will return to being a tough defensive unit again. “It’s a really long season, it’s 28 games, so one game isn’t going to define our season,” he said. A positive to come out of the game for Werribee City was the impact of youngster Trevor Ssemakula. He was dynamic on the right wing, using his pace to burn off defenders,

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ There used to be a mad scramble of clearances at suburban footy level in the final few weeks before the season, but with the increased professionalism demanded of players and the need to keep under the salary cap and points, most teams have just about completed their lists. I am hearing that a few clubs are struggling due to financial constraints, but that is not new. You can’t spend money you don’t have, and benefactors are hard to find and less likely to hand over wads of cash to pay players, especially when those players just take the money and run. Clubs are getting better at building a club’s success rather than trying to buy it. Some big names are on the move in the WRFL, with Altona very busy. Steve Kennedy heads back to Darley, but the club has great pick-ups in Kevin Johnson from Yarraville Seddon Eagles and Patrick Rose from the EDFL. Deer Park snare yet another former AFL-listed player in former Blue Paul Bower. ■ The annual Jalna Big Bay Swim happens from 9am this Sunday when swimmers from all over the world jump into Port Phillip bay for the 3.2-kilometre challenge from Port Melbourne to Williamstown. Western suburbs teenagers Robbie Dilissen from Altona and Willy lifesaver Jesse Coulson will be among the local entries taking on defending champion Sam Sheppard. Money raised from the event goes to surf lifesaving clubs across the state. Details: bigbayswim.com.au ■ Williamstown Cricket Club will hold its annual president’s lunch on Friday, March 2, in the rooms at McLean Reserve from 11.45am. Richmond and AFL legend Kevin Bartlett, the main speaker, will be joined by Simon Helmot, one of the best cricket brains going around, and comedian Nick Cody. Tickets: 0425 780 096. ■ Spotswood sit in the VTCSA senior four going into the last round this weekend to meet Yarraville Club. Spotty has a shaky hold on fourth spot with Doutta Stars breathing down its neck. Doutta plays sixth-placed Keilor. In subbies north-west first XI, the top six is far from settled with two weeks to go. Werribee, in sixth, will need a super bowling performance this week against Taylors Lakes and a strong one-day finish against Brunswick to secure a finals spot.

and worked hard to get back to plug a hole defensively. “He was our best player by far,” Sabbadini said. “He’s very fast and very skilful and works hard all day, which is what a coach likes.” Brad Murray was willing to get stuck in the middle of the park and Nick Bavcar was the pick of the defenders at left back, barely putting a foot wrong all game. Werribee City will be keen to atone in its

home opener, against Moreland Zebras at Galvin Park on Saturday from 5pm. In FFA Cup qualifying, Point Cook-based West Point enjoyed a 2-1 win over Maidstone United at Grange Reserve on Saturday. West Point has drawn North City Lions away in this Saturday’s first round. In other first-round fixtures, Point Cook will host Bundoora United and Truganina Hornets will travel to Glen Waverley.

Point Cook has squandered an opportunity to break into the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north-west B1 top four. With the sides in third and fourth spots losing at the weekend, the door was left wide open for the fifth-placed Warriors to move up. But the Warriors had that door slammed shut on them in a 109-run first-innings loss to Deer Park away at the John McLeod Oval on Saturday. Point Cook was bowled out for a dismal 79 in chasing Deer Park’s modest total of 188. The Warriors were never in the hunt, losing regular wickets. Only four batsmen reached double figures, with Brett Talbot hitting the top score of 19. After being forced to follow on, Point Cook showed some fight in the second innings to reach 6-185. Harpreet Singh was the standout in the second dig for the Warriors with 62.

Tigers scrambling to stay in the top six Werribee’s hold on a top six spot in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west first XI appears shaky. The Tigers have been lauded for the stunning run of form that saw them pounce on sixth place, but their time there may be short-lived. Few would have envisaged Taylors Lakes as a threat to the in-form Tigers, but it is the visitors who hold the aces after the first day’s play at Chirnside Park last Saturday. Werribee could muster only 181 on a pitch captain-coach Tim O’Brien assessed as a plus-200 score. If the Tigers’ low total was cause for concern, what transpired in the final nine overs of the day only deepened their troubles. Taylors Lakes came out with a nothing to lose mentality, blasting 1-61 off just nine overs, leaving it requiring just 120 for victory with nine wickets in hand. Dilan Chandima did the damage for the Lions with a whirlwind 38 not out. “We thought it was a good opportunity to bowl nine overs at them and have them a couple of wickets down, but their opening batsmen teed up,” O’Brien said. “When you can’t make

the finals and you’ve got nothing to lose, you can get away with doing that. “We dropped him [Chandima] early though, which didn’t help. If we had taken that catch, things could’ve been a bit different.” Earlier in the day, Werribee’s innings was stop-start. At 2-6, the Tigers were crying out for rescuers, and O’Brien (67) and Marcus Worrall answered the call. O’Brien and Worrall put on 99 runs for the third wicket to get the Tigers back in the game at 3-105. Werribee lost another wicket soon after to be 4-105. There was a little recovery from the Tigers before a major collapse saw them lose 5-29 to be in all sorts at 9-150. Important late runs from Jonathan Burton (28no) and Travis Bean (17) dragged the side to a defendable total. Taylors Lakes will go into day two feeling better about its chances of victory. But O’Brien knows his team is up for the challenge. “We’ll throw everything at them,” O’Brien said. Lance Jenkinson

Opening bowler Jonathan Burton could hold the key to Werribee’s hopes on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski)

American a big hit with Devils The well-rounded skill-set of Alyssa Bennett has prompted the Werribee Devils to activate one of its import spots in the division 1 women’s team for the American. The athletic Bennett has proven to be a strong presence inside and outside the paint, playing either as a small forward or power forward. New Devils coach Reece Potter likes the flexibility in Bennett’s game. “Alyssa’s versatility to play on the perimeter or inside, plus her ability to contribute on both ends of the floor, will make her extremely tough for opposition teams to stop,” Potter said. Bennett has a reputation of being a fierce on-court competitor. Her energy was on show for all to see in a dominant final college season with Hamptom University and as a professional player in the Belgium first division. She is excited to have found a new home in Werribee. “I am very grateful that I’ve been chosen to be a part of the team,” Bennett said. “I’m beyond blessed to play in Australia – it’s like a dream come true. “I could never have imagined playing in such a beautiful country, also to be a part of an extraordinary growing organisation. “My goals are to help my team become stronger, and to build and grow together, furthering the season and be one of the final teams in the play-offs.” Werribee will open its season against Warrandyte Venom on March 18. Hoppers Crossing has edged out Williamstown 70-57 in a tight Bowls Victoria division 2 contest. With rink wins to Billy Russell (19-14), Steve Bartlett (24-12) and KD Vanderpoel (16-13), Hoppers came away with a valuable 16 points to preserve their spot in the top four.

Last gasp shot for Cats By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing is a long shot to feature in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association finals, but it will not die wondering. The Cats were supposed to run out of their nine lives in a penultimate round meeting against ladder leader Melton, but could be on the verge of a major upset. Cats captain-coach Greg Kennedy knows a lot of things will need to go right – both in his team’s control and out of his team’s control – if they are to break into the top six, but they will fight every step of the way until there is no more hope. “We were pretty fired up,” he said after a positive day one of the two-day battle. “We’re playing for our lives against the top-of -the-table side.” The first day could not have gone much better for Hoppers Crossing, which is three points outside the top six with two results in play. The Cats rolled Melton for just 135 in 62.3 80 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 21, 2018

overs at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday and finished the day on 1-18 in reply. “We’ve had a great first day, but there’s still plenty of work to do,” Kennedy said. “We know what we’re up for, so it’s up to us to put in the hard work and get it done.” There were stars all over the field for Hoppers Crossing. The Cats were miserly with the ball, giving up just two extras through leg byes and not a single wide or no ball. They held their catches, with Cats wicketkeeper Justin Goegan leading the way with four to take his season tally to a league-best 28. It’s not just Goegan’s dismissals that makes him so important with the gloves. “All of our fielders have been really good,” Kennedy said. “We didn’t put down a chance today, so we were excellent. “Justin, in particular, he’s a leader with his behaviour and his voice in the field, on top of

being a top class wicketkeeper. I’m sure he’s mis-gloved a ball, but I can’t think of anything important that he’s done wrong. “You can rely on him, you know he’s A-plus every week.” Hoppers Crossing’s bowlers were at their menacing best. Brett Smith was again the chief destroyer with 4-43 off 16 overs. “I think Brett is in that top group of consistent performers in the competition that does it week in week out,” Kennedy said. “He swings the ball, he bowls at a reasonable pace, not one of the lightning fast ones, but he bowls at a good clip. “His average and his economy is up there with the top-10 bowlers in the competition.” Bryce Stuart enjoyed a stellar first XI debut with Hoppers Crossing, finishing with 3-36 off 13 overs. Spinners Mitchell Ellis (1-9 off six) and Nkosana Mpofu (1-10 off 11) had some tidy spells, while Kennedy took 1-13 off 5.3. Hoppers Crossing requires 118 runs with nine wickets in hand to stay in the finals race.

Paul Kenny pulled off the gutsiest move of the Footscray Cycling Club’s summer criterium series so far – to no avail. It was teenager Hendy Dietze who emerged victorious in the third A-grade race of the series. Kenny went out front alone with five laps to go and as deep as a rider can go in an effort to keep the pack at bay. Dietze made a massive effort to bridge across to Kenny, and when he caught him, simply powered past.

Football

Werribee Tigers have announced the re-signings of Jade Cleeland and Matthew Brett for the 2018 Victorian Football League season. It will be Cleeland’s second year with the Tigers after playing nine senior games as a versatile tall in his rookie year with the Tigers. Brett, a defender, will enter his fourth season with the club, but will be looking for better luck on the injury front after his 2017 season was restricted to just seven development league games. MOTOR

Old Mini is a new masterpiece By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Mini has always been about customisation. Well, almost always. When launched way back in 1959 it was intended to be cheap, practical transportation for four people. But its cute shape soon entranced people and Minis became very much part of the Swinging Sixties, being personalised by pop stars, movie stars, royalty and anyone else wanting to get away from mainstream. When the New Mini was launched in 2002 BMW, by now the owner of the brand, could see opportunities of making serious amounts of extra cash by coming up with a huge range of extras – and offering complete special editions. Which brings us to the Mini Clubman Masterpiece Edition.
