Traffic fix on state agenda By Serena Seyfort Sunbury’s most notorious traffic hotspot – the intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street – will be removed if the Liberals win next year’s state election. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has vowed to remove the intersection through grade separation, with one road running over the other. But improvement is already on the way for the congested intersection, with the Andrews government set to replace the current roundabout with traffic lights early next year.

Roads Minister Luke Donnellan told Star Weekly construction of the $6.4 million upgrade, which will include turning lanes, pedestrian crossings and bike lanes, would start “early next year”, making the spot “safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists”. The Liberals are proposing – if Mr Guy is elected in November, 2018 – that the new traffic lights would be removed to make way for the grade separation. Mr Guy said community consultation would help determine whether an underpass or overpass was built.

Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said grade separation would be a better solution for the traffic congestion. “The removal of the Gap Road-Horne Street intersection will be celebrated by every Sunbury resident,” he said. “As we all know, it is a real pain in the neck.” But RACV roads and traffic group manager Dave Jones said traffic lights and a removal of Sunbury’s level crossing was the answer to the town’s traffic woes. “RACV believes the long-term solution is to signalise the intersection of Gap Road

and Horne Street in Sunbury, and to remove the level crossing on Gap Road so that traffic doesn’t queue back into the Horne Street intersection,” Mr Jones said. Sunbury’s level crossing is not one of Melbourne’s 50 level crossings being removed by the current government. Hume sustainable infrastructure and services director Peter Waite said the council would need “clear evidence” that grade separation was “the right answer” before supporting the move, but welcomed the opposition’s interest in local projects.

Mayoral passion undiminished By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson has vowed to continue the council’s mission to improve the region after being unanimously re-elected to the position last week. Councillors were united in moving to “continue to refrain from having a deputy mayor”, as the council has done for the past year, after electing Cr Anderson unopposed. Cr Anderson thanked the council for its support and reflected on its achievements.

“I’m going to cry, it’s so emotional,” she said. “It’s been an amazing 12-month journey. The support these councillors have given me in the last 12 months has been fantastic.” Cr Anderson said discussions involving all eight councillors who said they were willing to step up and assist her in the mayoral role was demonstrative of the support she had received. The mayor said the council had achieved a lot in the past year, including getting out into the community to establish the council plan.

Speaking to the community, Cr Anderson said residents could have “no doubt” the council was going “to get out there soon enough” to discuss improving and advancing the council plan with residents. “We’re not going to rest,” she said. “We’ll keep going and we’ll do it as a fantastic team, together.” Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson. Council chases heritage ruling Macedon Ranges council is liaising with the state planning minister as it continues to try to preserve the character of the shire’s towns. Councillors last week voted unanimously in favour of council officers seeking urgent advice from Planning Minister Richard Wynne about a heritage overlay for Macedon Ranges’ heritage assets. Mayor Jennifer Anderson raised the motion, explaining that the minister had notified her that he was reintroducing the ability to put an interim protection over heritage sites. This comes after the council earlier this year called on the state government to come up with a new set of planning guidelines specifically for non-metropolitan areas. Councillor Helen Radnedge told the August council meeting that new guidelines were necessary “to protect the cultural heritage and built form character” of areas such as the Macedon Ranges. Last week, Cr Anderson said the council’s work to achieve specific planning protections for Gisborne, New Gisborne and Kyneton was “almost at the point of a planning scheme amendment”. But she warned the council that the area remained unprotected until the processes were completed. “We have many sites that people see as significant around our shire and they currently don’t have protection,” Cr Anderson said. Council officers will investigate the process to achieve a blanket interim protection in Macedon Ranges.

Medal honour for Sunbury heroes After saving the life of a cyclist suffering cardiac arrest, two Sunbury men have been honoured as Ambulance Victoria Community Heroes. Sunbury school teacher Greg Purcell was driving to work in February when he noticed Sunbury cyclist, 64-year-old Kevin Law, on the ground at Heysen Drive Reserve. Mr Purcell said he thought Mr Law might have been stretching, but stopped his car when he realised the cyclist wasn’t moving. “I found Kev unconscious on the ground and then rang triple-0 before I started CPR,” Mr Purcell said. Off-duty Sunbury CFA station master Tony Smith was driving past and stopped to assist with giving resuscitation. Both men were nominated for the Community Hero Awards by a paramedic who attended the scene, Elise Paton. She said their assistance had helped paramedics to focus on Kevin’s airway and putting on a defibrillator. “After a few minutes, Kevin’s heart started to beat on its own,” Ms Paton said. Mr Law was taken to Sunshine Hospital, eventually fitted with a pace-maker and has returned to bike riding. He was in the audience last week when Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy and Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker presented Mr Purcell and Mr Smith with Community Hero medals at Parliament House.

Wheels with wow factor A colourful dome made of 150 decorated wheels delighted visitors at Sunbury StreetLife. The attention-grabbing community art project raised awareness earlier this month for Sunbury’s CareWorks service, a not-for-profit organisation that assists those in need with food, financial aid, a listening ear and practical help. Children from eight Sunbury primary schools and two kindergartens contributed to the bright artwork, organised by CareWorks board member and Sunbury mother Nicholle Gallus. Mrs Gallus said the project taught the schools and the community about CareWorks. This year marked the fourth time she has organised a collaborative art project for

CareWorks, but the first time the project had merged with StreetLife. Mrs Gallus said she chose to centre the work around wheels this year to tie it in with the concept of helping each other to move forward. “The dome of wheels was about how every service and school in the community helps people move from one place to the next,” she said. After the children had decorated the wheels, the dome took Mrs Gallus two hours to install, on top of the hours spent co-ordinating the children’s work. Sunbury Bunnings Warehouse donated coloured spray paint for the project. Serena Seyfort

Police chief looms Large By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges’ new inspector brings 23 years of policing experience with him and the commitment to ensuring residents feel safe. This month Christopher Large has started as the new Local Area Commander Inspector in Macedon Ranges, based between Gisborne and Kyneton police stations. While he’s never worked in Macedon Ranges before, Inspector Large said he was from around the area and was familiar with the community. The Inspector said he was looking forward to working further from Melbourne after spending most of his career working in crime areas in the western suburbs. “Prior to taking up the appointment here, I’d always worked in the north-west metro area of Melbourne,” he said. “The opportunity to come out here and take on different challenges and different opportunities was too good to refuse.” Inspector Large said his focus was ensuring locals felt safe following a recent internal survey that revealed Macedon Ranges residents feared being victims of burglaries. “For me, the priority really is ensuring that the Macedon Ranges community feels safe and has trust and confidence in our local police,” he said. “Coming into the new year, we’re going to look to run a number of community safety forums across all of the Macedon Ranges, aimed at providing people with an opportunity to talk with local police about the community safety issues impacting on them.” Inspector Large said the police were also looking at opportunities to communicate safety messages about theft from motor vehicles, after a spate of burglaries from cars in the area last month. Inspector Large is hoping to stay in the area for “at least the next two to three years”.

Jacksons Hill future unveiled The Sunbury community no longer has to wait to find out what the future holds for its beloved Jacksons Hill. More than a year after investigations into uses for Jackson Hill began, the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) is hosting two sessions to present a draft master plan to the community. Sessions will be held on Thursday, November 30, from 6-8pm, and Thursday, December 7, from 4.30-6.30pm. VPA representatives will talk through the key features of the plan, answer questions and discuss the next planning stage. Both sessions will be held at Sunbury Bowling Club and require registration, which can be done by calling 9651 9600 or online at http://bit.ly/2A1H3o7 Late last year the VPA began meeting with residents and community groups. Further engagement with the community resulted in feedback from 1200 people. Accommodation, school facilities, a food precinct and a gallery were high on the list of ideas for the site. Respondents also advocated for a performance and event space, a community shed and recreation space at Jacksons Hill. Feedback identified a strong desire to recognise and preserve the site’s Aboriginal and heritage values and to protect the site’s heritage buildings. The VPA’s draft master plan will be released online from Friday, December 1.

Council plans for Gisborne growth By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges council is preparing to tackle Gisborne’s population growth through two new town planning projects. The council will outline Gisborne’s long-term settlement boundaries and the future form and layout of the town’s central business district after receiving $220,000 from the state government’s Streamlining for Growth program. The planning will include consideration of

building and landscape design and parking. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the new plans were needed to manage Gisborne’s significant population growth in recent years. “This is important work that we need to get done right now so that we have the appropriate planning controls in place to make Gisborne attractive, connected and liveable,” Cr Anderson said. “This includes planning for new housing, roads, transport connections, parking and open spaces.”

Gisborne’s population increased by 35.9 per cent, from 9823 to 13,345 in the ten years from 2006-16, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Independent demographic company .id estimates the population will soar to 20,379 residents by 2036.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the planning would also look at local job creation. “It also involves planning for the local economy so that people can find local jobs where they live and spend less time commuting,” Ms Thomas said. The council said the planning work would include discussions with the community and stakeholders. The draft town structure plan and urban design framework are expected to be released for public feedback mid next year.

Wine’s winning ways “It’s also entered by some of the biggest wine companies in the world, so I find that it sets a high benchmark to measure the wine against,” Mr Cormack said. The Tylden resident established his winery in 1987 after studying viticulture and touring some of the best wine regions overseas. Producing wine is Mr Cormack’s second job and he usually makes less than 100 cases each year. He grows the grapes at his vineyard, then bottles and makes the product at Baynton’s Granite Hills winery, with the help of his friend Granite Hills owner Llew Knight. Pegeric Wines does not have a cellar door, but is sold in places such as the Flower Drum restaurant in Melbourne’s CBD and Rathdowne Cellars in Carlton North. The winning wine can be tried locally at The Parkland Kyneton.

One of Australia’s smallest wine producers, located in Macedon Ranges, has had more than just a taste of success in an international wine competition. Tylden’s Pegeric Wines took out two trophies in this year’s Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition – just as the boutique micro producer did in 2015. Up against small and large wine companies from 33 countries, Pegeric Wines’ 2009 pinot noir won the trophy for Best Wine with Vegetable Tempura. The winery won the same award in 2015. The 2008 pinot noir was awarded Best Wine with Prawn Vindaloo. The Tylden winery has won seven trophies, 10 gold medals, 29 silver and 39 bronze medals in this competition in the past seven years. Pegeric Wines’ Chris Cormack said he liked entering the Asian contest because it was one of the only wine competitions in the world that matched wine with food.

Brad Teal Gisborne: 5428 2800

As Riddells Creek rockets in popularity, here’s a chance to claim a first home or act as savvy investor. On a classic quarter-acre block (1000 square metres), the quality-built house has three fitted bedrooms, the main with walk-through robes and en suite. The bathroom, with timber vanity, is separate to the toilet. A spacious lounge-dining room off the entry hall, has a split-system and slate-tiled fireplace, while the meals zone abuts the kitchen where stacks of timber cupboards couple with new granite benches and an upright electric cooker. Multiple ceiling fans add to climate control, as does ducted heating throughout. A pergola provides outdoor relaxation space and the large backyard has established gardens. A driveway heads under a double carport to a two-car shed.

Enjoy the view to Mount Macedon from a mature landscaped backyard and outdoor entertaining area. Inside, the spaces are equally impressive, with four large carpeted bedrooms (three with built-in robes), including the main with a contemporary en suite and walk-in robe. Living comprises a theatre room, home office, living room plus a retreat to enjoy the view. The open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge is tiled and all of the living spaces – including this one – are big, light-filled and welcoming. Property of the week

LANCEFIELD 168 Burke & Wills Track, 3435 Brad Teal Sunbury: 9744 2555

Price: $2.55 million

This captivating property of about 93.07 hectares fits the bill for a choice of lifestyles, but one factor that will universally appeal is the scenic setting from all angles. Large, leafy-edged lakes, forested areas and pastureland form a patchwork of beauty, and views from the elevated house precinct are really something. There’s a paddock for a pony, an orchard, lovely gardens and lawns, two dams and five 22,500-litre water tanks. To cap that off, there’s a 12 x 42-metre clear-span shed with rail for overhead crane, three-phase power, office and workshops.

The house has spacious rooms with an innate elegance, the decor tending to classic – such as quality window furnishings in traditional style, the black-and-white flooring and the multi-paned windows. However, one aspect of this place beautifully defies tradition: a massive tiled entertainment room with timber highlight walls, centred by a spa and winter-warmed by a wood heater, has fabulous conservatory roof and windows at one end, bang-on for box seat views. Open-plan living areas include a graceful

lounge-dining room with a plaster pitched ceiling, and a gas log fire under a traditional white mantelpiece; and an expansive sitting-meals area where the white wall paint – used throughout – bounces around the light. The sitting area, with an exposed brick highlight wall, is carpeted. The timeless black-and-white kitchen has scads of bench space and storage, a walk-in pantry and appliances sporting either the Bosch or Miele tag. A study behind double doors is tucked away off the entry foyer and, beyond the spa room, there’s a bedroom and bathroom,

ideal for guests. The shower in this bathroom has a picture window framing an atrium-style space planted with tree ferns. The remaining four bedrooms are upstairs, along with the main bathroom and separate toilet. The spacious main bedroom has walk-through robes and a large dual-basin en suite. This terrific property, with integrated remote-controlled double garage, is on the edge of town, with the primary school and shops a five-minute drive away. Carole Levy

29 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 28, 2017

SPORT Coaching journeyman finally lands a senior role Ben Tankard thought his opportunity to take on a senior football coaching role for next year had passed. With most clubs having filled their spots, Tankard thought he would do another year as an assistant coach. But then the Macedon coaching gig popped up. The role proved to be the right fit, with Tankard appointed senior coach on Saturday. “Pretty much the last two years I’ve been looking for a senior coaching role,” he said. “The Macedon job came up and I thought it was a good fit. I enjoyed two years of country football and this is the best of both worlds as I live in Keilor. The club has been really professional and seems like a great club that I wanted to be a part of.” Tankard comes to the Cats having been involved in coaching reserves, juniors and as an

assistant for 14 years. Most of those years came at Essendon Doutta Stars where he also played, before a couple of years in the country. This year he was an assistant coach to his brother Sam at Taylors Lakes. Tankard said it was nice walking into a club that was coming off a Riddell District Football League premiership, but it also presented challenges knowing the standard that had been set. “It’s pretty good, but it will be a tough challenge,” he said. “It’s good to know I’m walking into a club with a quality core group of senior players.” At this stage, only two of the premiership side won’t be returning next year. Bowen Medallist and league leading goalkicker Jason Cooke has joined St Albans, while Aaron Christensen has returned to his junior club, Sunbury Lions.

Tankard said the club would sit down over the next couple of weeks and look at the playing list to assess where they are at. He said they would likely target someone to help fill the void left in front of goal. Despite the late appointment, Tankard said he didn’t think they were that far behind other teams. And he liked what he saw at the club’s first training session on Monday night. “Our under-19 team is talented and we will have some of them pressing for a spot. “A lot of the younger guys have the skills and pace that suits our ground.” Tara Murray New Macedon football coach Ben Tankard. (Mark Wilson)

Cannon launches career By Tara Murray Reality is yet to set in for Calder Cannons’ Noah Balta, who is now a Richmond footballer after being selected by the reigning AFL premier in Friday night’s AFL national draft. One of the X-factors in the draft with his ability to play multiple positions, Balta didn’t have to wait long to hear his name called out. The Tigers used their third selection, pick 25 to select him. “It’s crazy,” Balta said on Sunday. “I had the family over and it was pretty good to have everyone over. “A few interstate clubs had some picks around that stage and I was a bit shakey. Richmond called my name out and I chucked my arms in the air.” Balta knew the Tigers were interested, having spoken with them a couple of times, but his selection still came as a shock. “I was getting text messages from all the players saying welcome to Tigerland,” he said. “They’ve been really welcoming already. “I don’t know if I’ll get a game straight away, but they’ll know when I’m ready.” Among Balta’s new teammates is Alex Rance, a man many people compare Balta’s game to. Balta sees himself as a defender, but has shown he can play in the ruck and up forward. “Alex’s work rate is one of his best traits,” Balta said. “That’s something you can learn. I’ll look to be competitive at training with him. If I go forward, there’s Jack [Riewoldt], who is another good person to learn off.” Balta said playing football had been his dream ever since he picked up the ball. “I played soccer when I was seven and eight,” he said. “I then played football and won a premiership, was best on ground in the grand final and second in the league best and fairest. “I was only middle of the table with soccer, so I stuck with football.” Balta is the latest Cannons player to be drafted to the Tigers in recent years. Ivan Maric, who this year retired from AFL, is one former Cannon that Balta has got to know in recent years. Cannons’ region manager Ian Kyte said the club was thrilled for Balta. Balta was the only Cannons player who was expected to be selected in the national draft. Kyte said the club had been hopeful that Mitchell Podhajski would be a late pick, but that didn’t eventuate. He said they still believed Podhajski was a good chance to be picked in the rookie draft, which was held on Monday. For all the details on Monday’s rookie draft, go to www.starweekly.com.au Noah Balta has landed at Richmond. (Shawn Smits) 30 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 28, 2017

Bacchus Marsh Gold has upset Gisborne in a thriller in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade. The two teams won two rinks apiece, in Gold’s 92 (14)-88 (4) win. Kyneton suffered a loss to Romsey 91 (12)-85 (6) despite winning three of the four rinks. Meanwhile, Kyneton Golf smashed Trentham 113 (18)-58 (0) and Lancefield smashed Bacchus Marsh Blue 153 (18)-57 (0).

Bowls

Sunbury returned to the winners’ list in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1 on Saturday. They defeated Darebin City, 101 (16)-64 (2). Marc Bullows, Todd Trewarne and Carla Krizanic led the winning rinks. Sunbury moved to third with the win. Meanwhile, Sunbury bowlers Todd Trewarne and Mikayla Long both had good weeks at the Victorian Open. Long, who made it through to the quarter-finals of the singles, made the mixed pairs finals, and Trewarne the men’s pairs final.

EDFL

East Sunbury will kick off its Essendon District Football League season on April 7 at home against Hadfield. The Thunder, which finished fifth this year, will then face Burnside Heights in the two sides’ traditional twilight match. The Thunder will again be involved in the only Queens Birthday weekend match, this time facing Northern Saints. In other EDFL news, the league has announced it won’t take part in next year’s AFL Community Championships due to financial matters. The league is also on the hunt for a new chief executive after Marc Turri decided to step down from the role.

Cricket

A hat-trick to Dave Cordy was the highlight for the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges veterans’ cricket side against Ringwood on Sunday. After winning the toss, Sunbury made 3-210 from its overs. Rod Browning (41), Dave Cordy (42), David Bower (40) and Morrie Boccabella (37) all ended their innings by retiring. In reply Ringwood was restricted to 6-131. Cordy took 4-18 including the hat-trick. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly

Jets stick with what they know for new head coach

New Sunbury Jets men’s coach Ryan Addison. (Shawn Smits)

Sunbury Jets’ Big V men’s coach is looking forward to the challenge of helping the Jets rise up the ladder. Several high quality applicants applied for the role, but the Jets decided the right person was already at the club, and appointed this year’s assistant coach Ryan Addison. It will be Addison’s second year at the club, having come across from Hume City Broncos with this year’s coach Lanard Copeland. Addison’s knowledge of the club’s vision, values and strategic plan played a major role in his appointment. “I can’t wait to get started,” he said last week. “This was too good an opportunity to turn down.” The appointment is his first senior coaching role, although he has long been involved in Big V clubs. Addison has spent time at Werribee Devils, Hume City Broncos and the Jets as both a coach

and player. He’s hoping this experience will hold him in good stead. “They’ve been good clubs to be involved with and they are some of the biggest clubs in the area,” he said. “I’m really happy to take on this role. It’ll be a learning curve and something I want to grab hold of.” Addison has been appointed for one season and his performance will be reviewed at the end of the season with the option of an additional two years. Addison’s first task is trying to re-sign key players for next year. “The first thing is to get all the main guys back. Last year we had a bit of interest, so hopefully we’ll have a good showing at tryouts.” Addison said they were also talking to some former players about possibly coming back, while some of their youth league players could make the step up.

The Jets finished fifth in their pool this year. “We didn’t finish where we would have liked this year, but we weren’t too far off it,” Addison said. “It’s about getting things running. I’m lucky I’ve got relationships with the players already. Jets’ coaching director Kennedy Kereama said Addison’s appointment slotted in well with the club’s program. “You see in many other sports the assistant coach is often promoted to head coach and for us this continuity is important.” “He shares in our vision for the men’s program and wants to build strong links between our juniors and the senior men’s team. “For us it made sense to work with a coach who is new in his coaching journey and help him develop over a three-year period than have to re-advertise each year.” Tara Murray

Sunbury ready to roar By Tara Murray Sunbury went from potentially facing a big run chase to being in control after day one of its clash with Diggers Rest Bulla. The Burras started the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup match on a good note and were cruising at 3-125. But the game swung quickly and they were bowled out for 169, losing their last seven wickets for 44. Sunbury captain-coach Dylan Wright said his players knew that if they kept attacking, wickets would fall. “We managed to peg it back,” he said. “We knew the way that they play and knew if a couple of chances went to hand that a few wickets can happen quickly.” Brad Hunter took 7-51 to be the best of the bowlers. Jason McGann bowled tightly taking 2-31 off 20 overs. Wright said Hunter was lucky. “I thought it was the worst he had bowled all season,” he said. “They weren’t coming out of the hand that good. We were lucky the catches went to hand.” The Roar got off to a good start in the run chase before losing Jason McGann in the second last over of the day. The Roar will resume at 1-37. “It took a really good catch to get rid of Jason,” Wright said. “Needing 140, we should be well and truly in the game. We know they have a couple of strike bowlers in their side. “If we can get through them and try to bat as long as possible, we should get the win.” Sunbury’s inconsistent start to the season has been fuelled by personnel changes. After some off season turnover, a further three players are no longer at the club. While that state of flux has not been ideal, it’s given the Roar opportunities to give younger players a chance. Mitchell Johnson and Lachlan Treweek are both in the Roar’s side for this week. A win would be the Roar’s third of the season, with Wright knowing it’s a crucial time for the side’s finals hopes. The Roar is in the middle of a three-game period against the bottom three sides. “If we don’t win this game we probably don’t deserve to be playing finals,” he said. In other matches, Gisborne made 230 against Bacchus Marsh. Darren Ward batted all day for his 143 not out. Riddell has a slight advantage against Lancefield after day one. The Bombers made 154 before Matthew Livingstone took four wickets to have the Tigers in trouble at 4-18. Rupertswood produced its best batting performance of the season, making 244 against Woodend. Romsey made 7-266 against Sunbury United in the other game.

East Sunbury skipper Jessy Carroll. (Mark Wilson)

Thunder’s bats rolling in runs East Sunbury had another good day with the bat in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. Facing crosstown rival Ashfield, the Thunder put on 8-256 from its 75 overs. Simon Barry took four wickets for Ashfield. A win would cement the Thunder’s spot in the top four, and a chance to move up to third with two sides above them, Eynesbury and Wallan, doing battle. For Ashfield it would be a second straight win and a third win for the season. Wallan is in control of its match, after a day out with the bat. The Magpies were bowled out for 375. Kieran Atkin made 181, to beat his top score of 180 he made in round two. Undefeated St Anthonys again starred with the bat. Passing 295 for the fourth time in four two-day matches, the Saints have set Kyneton 9-366. Paul Scott made 102. Macedon will need its middle order to hold strong against Riddell if it is to stay in touch with the top four. Riddell made 174, with Brendan McGeady taking three wickets for Macedon. Macedon got off to a good start in the chase and will resume at 3-85. Brendon Scott made 38, with Samuel Payne and Daniel Trotta the not out batsmen. Bacchus Marsh will resume at 0-25 chasing Gisborne’s 180. Jason McGann celebrates one of his two wickets. (Mark Wilson)

Alltrack rides nicely in its niche By Vani Naidoo, Marque Motoring

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF ALLTRACK 132TSI

When Volkswagen decided to give the Golf a mid-life spruce up, the Alltrack was also invited to the party and presented with a range of trendy updates that will keep its dance card filled. For starters, there are two more variants to accompany the 132TSI – the 132TSI Premium and a diesel, the 135TDI Premium – that will offer buyers greater options. And there are tweaks to design, infotainment and safety features to add more value to the proposition. The Alltrack is well-equipped with standard features with options packages for those who fancy a touch more. Our entry-level 132TSI boasted 17-inch alloys, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, cruise control with speed-limiter, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, reverse camera, parking sensors and a comprehensive safety package that has been boosted further with this update. The Golf Alltrack has never hurt the eye and a slightly refined exterior with new LED lights and bumpers certainly reinforces that feeling. It is restrained but classy, a look replicated on the inside too, where quality materials and a streamlined design are complemented by restrained trim and sensible buttons and dials. A larger 8.0-inch colour touchscreen now fronts the infotainment system and it is easy to navigate with clear crisp modern-looking graphics. Pairing your phone is child’s play with smartphone connectivity through Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The unit itself, is nicely integrated into the dash. Under the bonnet is the same 1.8-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder that arrived with the Alltrack in 2015. It is punchy and reliable with 132kW of power and 280Nm of torque and

drives through a smooth six-speed dual-clutch auto. There is also the choice of a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel which delivers 135kW and 380Nm and is paired with a seven-speed transmission. The Alltrack’s safety package now has additional active crash avoidance features like front assist with city emergency brake, front and rear sensors, trailer assist and a driver fatigue detection system. The cabin feels comfortable and reasonably spacious, with passengers benefitting from

more headroom than the Golf. However, there’s not much more room to stretch out, especially in the rear. The back seat is designed for three but the transmission tunnel suggests that two would be the preferable choice. The Alltrack glides along without fuss, with enough power when needed. It performs well on winding roads and the open highway. It remains quite flat through the corners despite its increased height, with good grip

and a fair bit of finesse. The ride is on the firmish side, but handling is comfortable and refinement is as you would expect from Volkswagen. The 4Motion all-wheel drive system offers extra assurance on most surfaces. While the Alltrack is no real off-roader, it does make light work of secondary roads and is good in slippery conditions. Despite fuel-saving technologies, the Alltrack is not as light on the juice as you may like. We struggled to match the official 6.8L/100km efficiency figures. While wagons may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the Alltrack does offer that higher middle ground between sedan and SUV that may appeal. It is fun to drive, spacious and comfortable enough for families and brings that little touch of adventure.
