Shine a light on sun safety These Melton tots know the importance of the slip, slop, slap sun safety message. About 89 per cent of early childhood services in Melton are already participating in the Cancer Council and VicHealth’s SunSmart program – but the aim is to get all centres on board. SunSmart program co-ordinator Justine Osborne said it was important for services to keep sun protection on the agenda. “Not only do most children attend early childhood services during peak UV times, they’re also at a time in their life when UV damage is most significant for determining future skin cancer risk,” Ms Osborne said. “Because of this, it’s really important that early childhood services are making sun protection part of their daily routine. “Our free program makes this simple by providing the policy advice, resources and education they need to ensure services are meeting their regulatory requirements and duty of care. “Now that the SunSmart generation is growing up and having children of their own, we want to make sure the message is being passed down.” Esther Lauaki

Park vandals strike again By Esther Lauaki

At first, Mr Traynor thought wind might have felled the trees. “But when we stopped, it was clear that they had been deliberately cut down – and not by a professional, but by someone who certainly didn’t know what they were doing,” he said. Mr Traynor said the campsite was littered with broken beer bottles and cans, takeaway containers, open loaves of bread and empty condom wrappers. A receipt from an adult shop in Sunshine, listing purchases made at 11.09pm on Saturday (February 3) as well as the “customer number” and a name was also found among the rubbish. “We handed all the photographs and the receipt we found in to a local ranger … it was a very, very fresh receipt,” he said. “It literally looked like someone had just gone shopping.”

Vandals have struck Lerderderg State Park for the second time in as many months, leaving behind a trail of fallen trees, rubbish, graffiti and potentially incriminating evidence. Camping blogger Brandon Traynor was on a trek through the park earlier this month when he came across three trees that had been illegally felled. “Three trees had been cut down with a chainsaw, rubbish had been left everywhere, the fire was still going on Sunday morning and full of broken glass and plastic, and nearby trees had been graffitied on,” Mr Traynor posted on the Swag Country Facebook page. He said the main entrance of the camp site had been blocked by the fallen trees.

More vandalism at Lerderderg State Park. (Supplied)

He said a ranger told him that the site had been clean and undamaged the previous morning. This is the latest incident at the park, after

vandals illegally cut down five trees, some more than 100-years-old, at the Upper Chadwick Track in December. The chief ranger for Geelong, Mike Forsyth, said Parks Victoria had been notified of the abandoned campsite and felled trees and the incident was being investigated. “Unfortunately, it’s an all too frequent occurrence … Parks Victoria staff’s valuable time and resources being used to clean up rubbish and vandalism,” Mr Forsyth said. “Cleaning up from any act of vandalism takes away time and money that could be better spent on productive activities such as maintaining walking tracks or improving park services”. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Parks Victoria or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sewage leak on the nose Two spills involving large volumes of raw sewage will cost Central Highlands Water nearly $16,000 in fines. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria fined the water authority over spills at Creswick and Buninyong, 10 days apart. EPA regional services director Paul Stacchino said both spills led to high levels of E. coli bacteria in nearby waterways. The Buninyong spill was in November during upgrade works at a pumping station in Learmonth Street. “The failure of pipe fittings at the pumping station late at night sent an estimated 72,000 litres of raw sewage down a stormwater drain, into a reed bed, then into the retention stormwater lagoons at the Buninyong Golf Course and into Union Jack Creek,” Mr Stacchino said. The water corporation pumped 48,000 litres of contaminated water from the reed bed, erected warning signs and monitored the waterways. The Creswick spill in December involved sewage contamination of about 300,000 litres from the old Creswick wastewater treatment plant. Esther Lauaki

Stepping it up for charity By Esther Lauaki Family was at the heart of last weekend’s Melton Relay for Life. Teams from the area banked more than $55,000 ahead of the two-day event and raised another $10,000 by Sunday. Relay for Life, one of the Cancer Council’s major annual fundraisers, is now in its eighth year in Melton and drew thousands of families, friends, work and community groups together to celebrate and remember

loved ones affected by cancer. Melton chair Mary Carroll said the atmosphere was “spiritual”. “There were more people than we expected,” Ms Carroll said. “Two standout teams included Ohana and the Smiling Ladybugs. “The Ladybugs had lost a family member just three weeks ago and had raised nearly $12,000 in less than a month. “People were concentrating on each other and they didn’t have their walls up so everyone

felt comfortable walking alongside strangers and talking to them. “The whole idea of the event is so that families and the community get together with people they may not have seen for a while, meet new people … and we’re all there for one huge cause.” Teams that raise more than $5000 can allocate the money towards a preferred area of research. The total for Melton’s event was $64,000 at the beginning of this week, with the grand total to be announced in four weeks.

Thieves smashed their way through the front doors of a Ballan farm supply store in the early hours of last Tuesday leaving with a beat-up car and $200. Police said that a stolen white Nissan Navara was used in the ram raid on Crossroads Trading on Old Melbourne Road before two offenders were caught on camera stealing a cash register containing about $200 about 2.45am. Police said the vehicle would have extensive damage to its front. Crossroads Trading, which has operated in Ballan for more than 25 years, sells farm supplies and equipment. Owners Asha and Bernie Shanahan took over the business four weeks ago. “Bernie and I would like to thank everyone in our local community for their overwhelming support after our break-in,” Ms Shanahan posted on Facebook. Late last year students at Caroline Springs’ Lakeview College ditched their uniforms. The school normally follows a strict dress code, but last September students donned casual clothes for a day to support the annual Jeans for Genes fundraiser. The event was overwhelmingly popular. So much so, that Lakeview College made it into the top-10 Victorian schools for money raised with a total of $5687. College captain Korey Osman said the key to the success was teamwork. “Most of this was all about making sure everyone knew about the day,” Korey said. “We were really lucky that the school’s leaders were happy to work with the students to get this off the ground. “We don’t have many out of uniform days

and we really pushed for this to be a full casual dress day.” While a lot of planning went into the day, Korey admitted he was surprised with how well embraced the day was. “We had both students and staff embrace it. There was a lot of planning that went in to some of the outfits,” he said. “We also didn’t actually know we made it into the top 10 until recently, it was just nice to see so many students willing to get involved.” Korey said the casual clothes day will be back in 2018. “The school leaders placed extra trust in the students and they weren’t let down. We’re all looking forward to doing it again.” Tate Papworth

Recycling starts truck fire By Tate Papworth A Melton City Council contractor’s life was put at risk earlier this month after his truck caught fire, forcing him to perform an emergency unload. The contractor was collecting recycling bins in Caroline Springs on Tuesday, February 13 when he noticed his truck was on fire. Following standard emergency procedures, the driver found a safe place – a reserve located a safe distance from houses or infrastructure – and unloaded the material. Emergency services

arrived soon after. The driver was uninjured. A skip bin was organised to collect the rubbish once the fire had been put out, but due to the contamination, the entire load was sent to landfill. It is believed materials from a resident’s recycling bin caused the truck to catch fire. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the incident was incredibly dangerous and issued a stern reminder about the dangers of putting hazardous materials into residential waste bins. “We urge all of our residents to be mindful of how they dispose of their waste, and only

household recyclables should be put in the recycling bins,” Cr Turner said. Contaminated recycling bins will not be collected, but hazardous household chemicals may be disposed of at an upcoming Detox Your Home event. For further information visit: www.melton. vic.gov.au/detox-your-home

Racing up the ranks Speedway racer Paul Sullivan said he exceeded his own expectations at the recent AMCA Nationals. The Bacchus Marsh driver clocked up a career highlight with a second-place finish at the Australian title event at Redline Raceway earlier this year and now has his sights set on an all-star title in March. Sullivan, whose previous best result at nationals was ninth place at Carrick Speedway in Tasmania in 2014, said he “couldn’t be happier” to have come away with a podium result. The 47-year-old driver was shaken by an early crash with former Australian champion Matt Hardy in lap two of the race. He resumed in fourth place, with no damage to his Panther chassis, but a collision between the two front-runners elevated him to second in the final lap. “I couldn’t have been more excited to cross

the finish line in second place and to me, it honestly felt like I’d won it,” Sullivan said. “I was hoping just to finish inside the top-five, so to improve on that and do much better than I thought I would was just an incredible feeling. “It was definitely a challenging day dealing with the condensed schedule in the extreme heat, but I amazingly didn’t get too nervous. I just set myself goals in each race and focused on them.” Esther Lauaki

School’s in for college By Tate Papworth Gilson College’s year three and four students have welcomed the addition of a new learning space. The year three and four learning area at the Taylors Hill campus has been fully renovated and a number of new learning spaces added. The building was last week opened at an official ceremony in front of the whole school. Head of campus Len Farquharson said it was a proud moment for the school. “It’s very exciting, we’re absolutely delighted to have a new facility, it’s always something that gives us a real thrill,” Mr Farquharson said. Funding for the building was provided in partnership with the Block Grant Authority which distributes funding to independent schools. Mr Farquharson said the authority had helped the school grow over the years. “We’re really grateful for the support of the Block Grant Authority,” he said. “We’ve been long-time partners with the authority, right from the beginning of the college here, so we have an ongoing building program. “Each year we submit a new project for consideration and generally those projects have come to fruition, making occasions like this grand opening almost an annual event.” The new building incorporates the latest architectural ideas for learning spaces in Australia, which Mr Farquharson said provided staff and students with a positive learning space. “Gone are the days of what I call battery hen classrooms,” he said. “Learning spaces like this one are very flexible. We still have traditional classes, but

Adventist Schools Australia director Daryl Murdoch opens the Gilson College learning spaces. (Dennis Manktelow)

these learning spaces are flexible and teachers can use these flexible workspaces for a whole range of modern teaching techniques. “There are modern architectural ideas

that stimulate the brain passively just with different angles, colours and textures, so it starts out as the students enter as being a really positive workspace.”

Legal firewood season opens Rangers will patrol regional parks, forests and reserves to ensure firewood is legally collected in the forthcoming season. The autumn firewood collection season will open across Victoria on March 1 and run until June 30. Grampians region assistant chief fire officer Peter Kambouris said interactive maps would soon be available online to advise residents of designated collection spots. “It’s important that people only collect firewood from designated collection areas in state forests or parks where collection is allowed and to stay within collection limits,” he said. “This includes taking a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year. This is to prevent households stockpiling large volumes of firewood from public land and denying others a supply.” Mr Kambouris said that the felling of any trees for firewood by members of the public was prohibited. “The amount of domestic firewood available across Victoria is varied and some households rely on firewood for winter energy, so consider others when taking firewood,” he said. Collection areas may be in areas where there are planned autumn burns. Mr Kambouris urged people to check where burns were scheduled as affected areas might be closed at short notice. Esther Lauaki

This week, I’ll have the pleasure of marking the commencement of works on the Scouts Adventure Activity Centre in Burnside Heights.

Over recent months, there’s been a hive of construction activity around Caroline Springs.

Scouts are an outstanding organisation that teaches its members practical life skills,

I’m very pleased to provide updates on two major projects: the construction of £ ¤ ¥ ¦ § ¨ © ª ¨

Council is proud to have worked with Scouts Victoria to plan and develop this new adventure facility. We secured $500,000 in funding through the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund on behalf of Scouts Victoria, and also contributed an additional $250,000 so this facility could be built.

Upgrades to Westwood Drive commenced in January, following State Government approvals late last year. Over the next few months residents will notice the installation ¡¢ £¤¥¡¦§¨¨¤¡§¢©¡¤£ª¢£«¬§¢®¡¥§¯®°¦ ¯±¤²¡³¥ ¯¥¡¬ ¢¤®¯´¬®£ ¢¡ ¡®°¥¡§¨¨µ£¶· ¯®§¢®¡³¯£©ª¥¡ begins around April. The project is expected to be open in early 2019.

The new Adventure Activity Centre will help triple Scout membership in the City of Melton to over 300, making it the largest Scout group in Australia. We also expect Scouts from neighbouring municipalities like Brimbank, Hume and from as far as Moorabool, will visit the facility throughout the year. This project is an outstanding example of what can be achieved when multiple levels of government and community organisations work together with a common purpose; to create a facility for our young people to use, and enjoy. On Wednesday 7 March, the eve of International Women’s Day, Council will host an event featuring a panel of trailblazing women sharing their inspirational stories of grit, determination and success. Panellists include Sam Lane, sports journalist and author, Madeleine Grummet, entrepreneur and CEO of GirledWorld, Lisa Hardeman, Victoria Police Superintendent and Victorian Women’s Football League legend, and acclaimed comic and author, Nelly Thomas. Bookings for this free event are essential, so visit melton.vic.gov.au/events for further information or to reserve your place. Melton joins women’s day party By Esther Lauaki Progress and equality will be at the top of the agenda for next month’s International Women’s Day initiatives in Melton and Moorabool. International Women’s Day will be marked worldwide on March 8, with this year’s theme being #PressForProgress. Melton residents are being invited to a raft of events, including a panel discussion, community walk and celebratory dinner. The panel discussion on March 7 at Melton Library and Learning Hub will feature

journalist Sam Lane, entrepreneur Madeleine Grummet and police superintendent Lisa Hardeman, with author Nelly Thomas as host. The discussion, organised by Melton council, is aimed at inspiring young people who are thinking about their futures. Melton mayor Bob Turner said International Women’s Day was an opportunity to reflect on how women’s equality could be achieved. “I encourage everyone to get involved in this year’s events and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive, to help press for progress,” he said.

Other highlights of the week will include the annual Women Making it Happen: Walk With Her community walk, kicking off from 10am on March 4 at Hannah Watts Park in Melton; and a free Bollywood dance class at Stevenson House from 10.30am on March 6. Melton Zonta Club will host its International Women’s Day celebration dinner on March 6. It will highlight the achievements of 12 local women, who will be profiled on social media and posters around Melton. Information and panel discussion bookings: bit.ly/2opHu6s

Noah dances in the rain Noah Barlow is doing his bit to make dreams come true for youngsters like him. The Bacchus Marsh seven-year-old was born with multiple disorders, some so rare they had no name, but two years ago doctors narrowed his diagnosis down to mitochondrial disease – a chronic condition with no treatment and no cure. Noah was recently asked to design a pillowcase for Adairs to support the work of Make-A-Wish Australia which he has benefitted from throughout his treatment. His design, launched last week, features a drawing of his favourite vegie patch. All profits from the pillowcase sales will be donated to the Make-A-Wish foundation which grants the wishes of children aged three to 18 who are battling life-threatening illnesses. Noah’s journey up until now has been harrowing. He suffered five devastating stroke-like

episodes at an early age which would leave him unable to walk, talk, breathe or see. Each episode would cause more brain damage. Treatment is ongoing but Noah’s mum Kat celebrates each milestone from the past two years, from completing another year at school to swimming on his own, via a Facebook page dedicated to Noah. “The storms came and we played in the rain and he loved every moment,” she wrote of a recent and rare trip to the beach. “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain. “Today we did just that.” Details: bit.ly/2Fomi94 Esther Lauaki Noah Barlow with his pillowcase design that will benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation. 11 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 27, 2018

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE Amateur singer-songwriter Jacinta Guirguis dreams of making it big some day. The 18-year-old songbird shared her ambitions with Esther Lauaki.

How long have you lived in the area? 18 years. What are you passionate about? I live and breathe music. I’m also passionate about working hard … and I love getting involved in charity work. I was gifted with a beautiful life, friends and family, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help those who are less fortunate. How did you get into music. When I was about eight years old I attended one of my friend’s singing lessons and fell in love with music. I did lessons for about eight years. In the past two years, I really truly discovered just how important music is, not only to me, but to others. I started writing songs when I was 14 and I strive to build a connection with the audience through my songs. What school did you go to? I just graduated last year from Catholic Regional College Melton, and will now study a Bachelors degree in music at RMIT.

What do you hope you do this year? More live performances, posting more videos online of me singing and record an original song is my aim this year. I aim to continue busking, and doing charity work … to build a following within the community. How far would you like to go in music? Ever since I got into music, I’ve dreamed of making it big. I hope to make it one day and as a professional and well-known singer/ songwriter/recording artist. What would people be surprised to know about you? Whenever I busk, I donate 100 per cent of whatever I raise to either a charity, or someone in need. Not once have I ever kept the money I raised busking for myself. What is the best thing about living/working in Bacchus Marsh? The locals! Everyone here is so friendly and kind, it’s a beautiful town, full of beautiful people. I love working as a waitress in the local Chinese restaurant because I have met so many amazing people there. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? Would love an indoor pool in Bacchus to really bring the community together. Also more opportunities for young aspiring artists like myself to share our passion and talents. Bacchus could also really do with a recording studio, that would be amazing!

(Dennis Manktelow)

What is your connection to Bacchus Marsh? I have lived in Bacchus Marsh all my life. It is a beautiful area where I have had the opportunity to grow up, and experience all of my childhood and teenage years. I even attended St Bernards for my primary education, and now currently work as a waitress in Bacchus Marsh. Also I have had the opportunity to witness this town grow significantly.

This 1980s-era build has many great style features of its day and was built with quality in mind. Restore and refresh and reap the benefits, or enjoy it as it is. The layout is great with a large tiled open-plan design which was ahead of its time. The kitchen has classic hardwood cabinetry and a servery-style bench looking out to an L-shaped living area. Timber and glass sliding doors open to a large lot which offers endless possibilities. Three bedrooms have built-in robes. The timber panelling is extensive and worth an inspection.

The deceptively standard facade of this Melton house fronts a sleek, modern interior. Generous living spaces include the contemporary kitchen and meals area leading to the carpeted, light-filled and relaxed lounge area. The renovated kitchen has subway tiling and stone benches. It receives beautiful light and has great sense of space, as well as a 900mm stainless-steel oven and new dishwasher. Floating floorboards look fresh and contemporary. Three bedrooms have fans and built-in robes (the main with en suite and walk-in robe). The gorgeous backyard with mature trees is set below a wide, as-new, stained timber deck. All this is set in the heart of the best part of Melton. With ducted heating and split-systems and off-street parking, this house will make one family very happy.

This low-maintenance three-bedroom property on a large block has new carpets, a fresh coat of paint and a contemporary hard-wearing kitchen and offers prospective buyers room to improve. This fantastic value-added proposition is perfect for a first-time buyer or as an investment – it would be a great rental due to its proximity to local amenities. The large backyard has been cleared, making extending – or building an outdoor entertainment area – an easy proposition. The house is close to public transport, schools and shopping.

One of three similar properties, enjoy being part of this micro-community in a contemporary, low-maintenance abode, opposite entry to a large park and surrounded by other new, well-maintained properties. This unit has two bedrooms with carpeting and built-in robes, a great living area leading to a contemporary kitchen and dining area with stainless-steel appliances and good storage. Split-system units and ducted heating cover climate control. Other amenities include a single garage. It’s close to shopping, parks and schools and there is a bus stop at the end of the road.

Beyond a garden with synthetic turf, entry to the house is into a hallway laid with attractive large-format floor tiles that continue past the main bedroom and an open study before culminating in a spacious, light-filled living hub with split-system. Wide stepped cornices, pearl-white wall paint and windows dressed in either rollerblinds or charcoal drapes add to the appeal.

The kitchen, with a stone waterfall island bench under a downlight-studded dropped ceiling, has soft-chocolate toned cabinetry with opaque-glass fronted overheads, tiled splashback, a cooktop and stainless-steel dishwasher and underbench oven. The three fitted and carpeted bedrooms with ceiling fans include the spacious main, which has a split-system, a walk-in robe and an en suite with attractive tiling and a stone-topped vanity unit.

An extensive concreted area along the side of the house is well suited to whacking up a pergola in the future, while lawn provides space for kids and pets to run around. 41 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 27, 2018

SPORT Melton Centrals eclipse expectations Melton Centrals have well and truly exceeded expectations in their inaugural season in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Competition. With few expectations heading into the season, other than having a bit of fun and learning the game, Centrals have surprised others and themselves with their development. Captain-coach Candace Hulett said they had not envisaged the season they would have when they put the team together. Hulett, the most experienced player in the squad, said this season had been quite amazing and she had re-discovered her love of the game. “We’ve been training twice a week and it’s been going really well,” she said. “We started off with 11 players and we’ve now got a squad of 15. “It’s pretty hard to pinpoint a standout as everyone has done a fantastic job.” Hulett said all the players were starting to find their roles within the team as they develop their skills. “Over the course of the season the improvement has been noticed by the other teams and umpires,” she said. “We’ve got some

girls that are bowlers and a couple of allrounders and in the field they own their positions. “It’s incredible to see for women’s cricket at the club and we’re just surprised with the development. “We’ve been really pleased with the support from the club.”

A couple of wins early in the season was a bonus and the side has continued to grow and develop skills. It finished third in the west T20 competition and its finals hopes remain alive heading into the final round of the north-west one day competition. Centrals need a win in their final match against Gisborne and hope that Hoppers Crossing loses to St Anthonys, leaving the final top four spot down to percentage. On Sunday, Centrals lost to second-placed Craigieburn. Centrals made 8-151 from 40 overs, with Hulett top-scoring with 82. Craigieburn made the runs with ease, making 2-154 with 10 overs to spare. Hulett was the only wicket taker. St Anthonys got its second win of the season, defeating Tullamarine. The Saints made 2-130 off 38 overs with Jodie Brown top scoring with 48 not out. They then restricted the Demons to 9-94 from their overs. Tara Murray

Stallions ride out a win By Tara Murray Spring Hills showed a lot of positive signs in the side’s FFA Cup round one win against Sunbury United on Saturday. Facing a higher-ranked side, the Stallions recovered from a shaky start to seal a win in their first competition game of the season. Stallions team manager Joe Febbraio said they went into the game focused on implementing their training. “We went in with the view of it being another pre-season game,” he said. “We’ve changed a few things and we want to continue to build on the stuff we have been doing. “The boys played to the structures and worked on the things we’ve been doing since December.” Luck was against the Stallions early on and they could have quite easily led 1-0 after 10 minutes. The Stallions thought they had scored in the opening minutes, before the goal was disallowed due to an off-side call. United was awarded a penalty which was saved, but was then given another shot when the referee said the goalkeeper moved off his line. United took the lead when they converted the second time. The Stallions levelled the scores later in the first half, before scoring the only goal of the second half to seal the win 2-1. Febbraio said they were pleased with how the side responded in the second half. “We got the winner and showed some real discipline and shape,” he said. “We were quite happy with how it panned out. “These games are always difficult to judge, with a lot of teams at various stages in the pre-season.” The Stallions will go into the state league 4 west season with a similar to team as last year when they finished second in west 5 and earned promotion. David Maglovski will again coach the side. Febbraio said the most pleasing thing was that most of the side had come through the ranks at the Stallions. In other results, Melton Phoenix is also through to the second round of the FFA Cup after defeating Sandringham 2-1. The Phoenix scored twice in the first half and were able to hold on to get the win. The draw for the third round of the FFA Cup was due to be released on Monday afternoon, with the third round of matches to be held this weekend. 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 27, 2018

Umpires to target 200 With football continuing to grow, the Riddell Umpires Association has launched Target 200. – an initiative aimed at attracted 200 umpires this season. The association provides umpires for senior and junior Riddell District Football League matches, along with club 18 games and AFL Goldfields women’s and girls matches that fall in the playing region. Association recruitment officer Billy Mitchell said the association thought 200 umpires was a good number to meet umpiring needs this season. They had about 160 umpires last season. “There’s a growing number of games in men’s, women’s and juniors, so having 200 umpires would put us in a good position,” he said. Anyone is welcome to a training session to see whether officiating is for them. “It’s great for players, ex-players, coaches or anyone interested in getting included,” Mitchell said. “It’s a fantastic way to get involved in community football, get fit, earn money and challenge yourself.” The association will have a come and try day on March 7 at Salesian College, Rupertswood, in an attempt to get Sunbury and Macedon Ranges umpires on board. Training is normally held in Melton. Details: http://www. riddellumpires.com.au/index.php/en/ Tara Murray

Lions tipped out of top spot Melton’s grip on top spot of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west competition has come to an end after the side’s upset loss to Hoppers Crossing. The Lions were bowled out for 135 last weekend. The Cats resumed at 1-18 on Saturday and never looked in trouble during the chase. They hit the winning runs five wickets down, before going on to make 8-202 off 61 overs. Brad Jones was the best of the bowlers for the Lions taking three wickets. The Lions were 0-9 in their second innings when the match was called. While the result keeps Hoppers Crossing’s finals hopes alive, it means the Lions give up top spot which they had held since before Christmas. The Lions sit second, one point behind Williamstown, heading into the final round. The Lions face bottom side Coburg. Spring Hills’ Rocky Calfapietra in action against Sunbury United. (Shawn Smits)

Melton Centrals calling on new recruits to bolster club Melton Centrals are looking for more players for the upcoming AFL Goldfields women’s season. It’s been a slow start to the off season for Centrals, with retirements and players leaving to play at a higher level, leaving the side short of numbers. Centrals’ Janelle Martin said things were looking dire earlier this year, but they were slowly recovering. “We’re hoping that it’s like every other year, no one wants to do pre-season and they turn up before the season starts,” she said.

“The numbers are better than they were. We’ve got about 15 girls and that’s not including the old bucks who have retired. We’ll pull on the jumper if we have to, but would rather not.” Martin said they were looking for players of all abilities and people were welcome to come to training to try it out. Two weeks ago, the club had Western Bulldogs vice-captain Nicky Callinan run a well-supported clinic at the club. Callinan started her career at Centrals before progressing through the ranks. With a call-out for new players Centrals have

also appointed a new coach for this year. Martin, who coached the women’s side last season, stood down from the role and Stephen Holmes has taken over the reigns. “His daughter plays in our youth league side,” Martin said. “He had never coached before but had been involved with football his whole life. “He’s recently retired and decided he wanted to get involved.” Interested players can contact Janelle on, 0413 148 807. Darley is in control after day one of its match with Brown Hill in the Ballarat Cricket Association. The Lions were a team in a hurry and made 5-192 before declaring after 41 overs. The Lions then had Brown Hill 6-80 at stumps. The Lions need to win and have other results go their way, or win outright and hope Mt Clear doesn’t get more than six points, to make finals.

VTCA

Sydenham-Hillside’s finals hopes now rely on the side pulling off a reverse outright win against East Coburg in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 competition. The Storm were bowled out for just 86, before East Coburg made 106 to get first innings points. The Storm is 2-33 in their second innings. Ladder leader Caroline Springs need 268 for victory against Sunshine.

VTCA

Melton Centrals and Melton South Royals are both on track to finish their Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 seasons on a high. Centrals made 9-242 against Bellbridge on day one of their match, while the Royals are 0-24 in reply to Williamstown Colts 140.

Bowls

Melton fell just short of an upset win against Glenroy in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1 on Saturday. Facing second-placed Glenroy, Melton pushed it all the way falling just short, losing 75 (16)-72 (2). Melton is eighth with one round remaining. Hayden Castle on his way to a winning game for Eynesbury against Gisborne. (Damian Visentini)

Castle builds a winner By Tara Murray Eynesbury’s finals hopes are in its own hands after a stunning performance from Hayden Castle helped move the Eagles back into the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade top four. Castle did the job with the bat in both innings and with the ball in between to guide the Eagles to a solid win against Gisborne on Saturday. Castle’s brother and Eagles’ coach Luke Castle said it was a much-needed return to form for his brother. “He stood up like a captain should,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the way ‘H’ played. He hasn’t had the best form this year, but he’s coming good at the right time.” After a disappointing day one with the bat, bowled out for 163, the Eagles took back control late to have the Dragons 8-102 at stumps. It took just three and half overs on day two for the Eagles to finish the job. Hayden finished with five wickets and Luke wasn’t far behind him with four. “Obviously we had a batting collapse on day

one to go from 2-130 to all out for 160,” Luke said. “It was one of the quickest spells I’d seen from H all season and the fielders threw themselves around to back him up.” The Eagles then set about getting some runs on the board to get some more points from the game and close the gap to the top-four teams. Hayden continued his stunning form, making 102 as the Eagles finished 4-230. He made 73 in the Eagles’ first innings. All but one of the batsmen who got a bat made starts, which Luke said was a good sign for the side. “Tristan [Francis] only played the second week of the match and made some runs,” he said. “Every time he has batted he hasn’t failed and is really good to rely on. We haven’t had him against the good sides and we don’t have the depth to cover him.” The Eagles’ win and East Sunbury losing to Wallan means the Eagles now sit in fourth spot, 1.03 points ahead of the Thunder heading into the final round.

On paper, the Eagles have the easier final round match, facing second bottom side Macedon, while the Thunder faces top side St Anthonys. However the Eagles will be without both Castle brothers for the match. Luke said he hoped the other players can stand up and do the job in their absence. “We have been really good at standing up when ‘H’ hasn’t been playing well,” he said. “The other guys have stood up then and hopefully they can do it again this round.” St Anthonys will be looking to seal top spot with a win against the Thunder. The Saints sit 0.26 points ahead of Wallan. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh has sealed top spot in the McIntyre Cup with a big win against Riddell. Resuming at 0-32 in reply to the Bombers 130, the Bulls were five wickets down when they hit the winning runs. The Bulls were 5-177 when both sides decided to end the match. James Lidgett finished the game on 74 not out.

CHBD

Bacchus Marsh Gold will have to do it the hard way if it is to claim the Central Highlands Bowls’ top division title. Gold has slipped from first to fourth in recent weeks after losses to the other top sides. On Saturday, Gold lost to third-placed Kyneton, 86 (16)-77 (2). The two sides will face each other in the first week of finals, in an elimination semi-final.

Women’s Cricket

Sydenham-Hillside claimed the inaugural Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s women’s premiership. The Storm entered the grand final against Westmeadows as favourites, having finished on top of the ladder. The Storm restricted the Warriors to 73, with Maddison Lorimer taking three wickets. The Storm had no trouble in the chase, making 1-74 to claim the title. Catherine Morrow top scored with 43 not out.
