A production with bite There will be no room for wallflowers as Staughton College students step up rehearsals for their upcoming stage production Little Shop of Horrors. The adaptation of the 1986 American rock musical horror comedy follows a meek flower shop owner who discovers a carnivorous plant during a total eclipse. Production manager Abigail Grace said Little Shop of Horrors was a quirky change to previous years’ performances. “We wanted to experiment with a style/ genre quite different to our previous productions of Grease and The Wizard of Oz Oz,” Ms Grace said. “Little Shop of Horrors opened up opportunities for us to incorporate for the first time a live band and allowed us to work with a smaller cast to refine and showcase students’ skills of acting and singing.” She said students and staff have been busy rehearsing, making sets and costumes and planning for the August 31 curtain-raiser. “The most exciting element of preparing this show was working out how to make the performance our own with moments where the audience are immersed into the story,” Ms Grace said. “Since auditions, students have been blowing us away with their talent, hard work and dedication to the whole production process.” The production runs until September 2. Tip hotline ‘on the nose’ By Alexandra Laskie A 24-hour complaints hotline set up by the operator of Melbourne’s biggest tip has been described as a ruse designed to artificially lower the number of complaints about foul smells coming from its Ravenhall site. Over the past few weeks residents in Deer Park, Caroline Springs and suburbs near Cleanaway’s Melbourne Regional Landfill have received letters from the company informing them about its new “odour monitoring program”, which it says is being conducted

by independent consultants. The letter also urges people to contact Cleanaway’s “24/7 community hotline” about smells believed to be coming from the tip. Western Metropolitan Region MP Bernie Finn said the hotline was an attempt at “fiddling the figures” by diverting people away from lodging a complaint with Environment Protection Victoria’s (EPA) pollution hotline. “Some people will fall for this unfortunately,” he said. “You only need a 5 or 10 per cent drop in complaints so they can say ‘we have improved the situation’. They’ve pulled a very cheap and

nasty trick on the community,” Mr Finn said. He is awaiting a response from Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio about the state government’s policy on what he describes as Cleanaway’s “attempt to subvert a system designed to protect my constituents”. In June, Planning Minister Richard Wynne approved a permit that allows the waste giant to expand its 133-hectare Ravenhall site by 96 hectares, despite vocal objection from nearby residents and developers. Deer Park resident Marion Martin, who

lives three kilometres from the tip, was among those who received a letter about the odour monitoring program and community hotline. Ms Martin said her calls to the Cleanaway hotline have been met with lies. “I’ve got calls back saying the smell was coming from the back of Coles in Burnside, or an Indian or Chinese restaurant in the area,” she said. A Cleanaway spokesman said the hotline was set up four years ago in response to feedback from the community that complaints lodged with the EPA weren’t actioned upon.

Food trucks could be rolling up to Lerderderg State Park in Moorabool with a new trial to start later this year. Parks Victoria is calling on mobile traders for expressions of interest to offer food and beverage services as part of a mobile food services trial at 11 parks across the state. Traders participating in the trial will be issued a licence for six months, from November to April next year for summer sites. Winter-only sites will be available for three to six months from June 1 next year. Parks Victoria chief operating officer Simon Talbot said the trial would provide an opportunity to test food and beverage services in parks without leaving a permanent footprint in the park. “Mobile traders will need to meet certain criteria including environmental considerations, social benefits to the community and the ability to strategically align with Parks Victoria and the Victorian Governments’ healthy choices guidelines.” Other destinations including Baw Baw National Park, Maroondah Reservoir Park, the former Olinda Golf Course carpark, Point Nepean National Park, Silvan Reservoir, Westerfolds Park, Westgate Park, Yan Yean Reservoir Park, Yarra Bend Park and Yarra Ranges National Park, will also be included in the trial. As Melton’s newest suburb, Mt Atkinson, received the green light from the state government, doubts have been raised about the potential strain it will place on struggling rail services. State Planning Minister Richard Wynne last week approved the detailed precinct structure plan for Mt Atkinson, which is south-west of Caroline Springs. The 1500-hectare precinct is scheduled to feature more than 8000 dwellings that will become home to more than 22,000 people in the next 15 years. It will include a town centre, a large business and commercial hub, an industrial park, public open space, four schools, community facilities and land for a future train station. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said Mt Atkinson was one of three future stops planned for the Ballarat line and she didn’t think they could be opened until the line was electrified. While the state government has pledged $518 million for upgrades to the Ballarat line, including duplication of the line between Melton and Deer Park, it is yet to announce funding for electrification. “At the moment, the line is almost at a maximum capacity, which is why it needs duplication before we can entertain adding other stops,” Cr Ramsey said. Greens western suburbs MP Colleen Hartland called on the government to commit to a metro train service to Melton. “The Ballarat V/Line service is already full, so this new suburb in Mt Atkinson will be a nightmare for people who catch the train,” she said. “All the V/Line stations from Ardeer to Melton should be on a metro train line. Moorabool Relay for Life team is ready for the big event. (Supplied)

Steppin’ up for a cure The race is on to register for Moorabool’s Relay for Life. The event, which marks its 10th year in October, has raised more than $685,000 for cancer prevention, research and support over the past decade. Teams of 10 or more are invited to register for the overnight event in which they take turns to keep a baton moving around the Darley Civic Hub track for the relay’s duration. Cancer Council community co-ordinator Jo Walster said Relay for Life was a chance for the Moorabool community to recognise and celebrate cancer survivors, patients and their carers, to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money to help save more lives.

Funds raised at the relay go towards research and prevention programs such as the Cancer Council Helpline. Darley Primary School physical education co-ordinator Dale Missen, who has participated in the past six relays, said it is always an “enjoyable and rewarding experience”. “For the last six years I have continuously been attending Relay For Life events with a passion to socialise with new and old friends,” Mr Missen said. Darley Primary School will be among a number of organisations at this year’s event which kicks off on October 21. www.fundraising.cancer.org.au/moorabool Esther Lauaki

RSPCA figures shame Melton By Esther Lauaki The number of animal cruelty cases reported in Melton is among the top 20 in the state according to the latest figures. The RSPCA received 279 complaints about the welfare of animals in Melton in the past 12 months to July – ranking the local government area 12th in the state. Reports were mainly about animals with insufficient food, water or shelter, concerns about hygiene, grooming and housing and reports of underweight or abandoned animals.

RSPCA Victoria chief executive Liz Walker said understanding the rate of cruelty reporting and the different offences in local areas was critical to ensuring the organisation directs its education, advocacy and enforcement efforts to the places that need it most. “This year, RSPCA Victoria has started working more closely with local councils to understand local animal welfare issues, and to put in place tailored, local initiatives to educate owners and better protect animals,” Dr Walker said. “It’s disappointing to see that, for the second

year in a row, too many Victorian animals were reported to us because of concerns about very basic issues: food, water, shelter and vet care when they’re sick or injured. “These kinds of problems are so preventable. “Whether it’s asking family or friends for support, seeking assistance from animal welfare groups, or surrendering animals to be re-homed, we would strongly encourage owners who aren’t keeping up with the basics to seek help to care for their animals.” The RSPCA also received 100 complaints in Moorabool over the past year – ranking the

Moorabool local government area 34th in the state. “In most cases, concerns reported to us are quickly resolved by our inspectors educating the owner or person in charge of the animals involved, and reminding them of their legal obligations,” Dr Walker said. “In some cases, a stronger response is needed: a notice to comply, seizing and taking an animal into protective custody, or – when all else fails – prosecuting.” RSPCA Victoria received 10,180 reports across the state in 2016-17 – about 28 a day.

Athlete smashes records A Melton powerlifter is changing perception of what it means to be a strong woman. Robin Kuipers smashed three national and two world records in her weight class at the CAPO Australia powerlifting nationals in Queensland earlier this month. The 42-year-old personal trainer started competing in weightlifting and bodybuilding before she took her first world record in powerlifting in 2012. At the national competition, from August 11 to 13, Kuipers placed first in the 75 kilogram division and set the Australian bench press record at 80.5 kilograms, squat record at 161 kilograms and the Australian and world record deadlift at 185 kilograms. She said she wants to encourage others to take up the sport. “Powerlifting is suitable for all shapes and sizes and ages, I am 42 years old and been lifting for a number of years,” Kuipers said.

“I find powerlifting an incredible way to stay fit and trim while accomplishing my personal goals. “The sport is all about camaraderie and support. You find that the lifters that are competing against you are the ones that are shouting loudest for you to win.” Kuipers has set her sights on an invitation to the prestigious Arnold Sports Festival in March next year. To qualify she must lift a total of 500 kilograms across the bench press, squat and deadlift events. She thanked her passionate team, which includes husband and trainer Terence Kuipers and training partner Chrystal Joy. They train a group of six powerlifters. “I would encourage anyone that wants to stay fit and lose weight to get involved and try powerlifting discipline in the gym.” Esther Lauaki

Gymnasts in golden run Nine Melton gymnasts have an extra spring in their step after they claimed three national titles in recent weeks. The Acrofun level two squad of six gymnasts and a level four squad of three gymnasts came away with first place results at the National Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competition in Stawell last month. The Melton gymnastics club followed that success with gold for the level two girls and a bronze for the level four squad at the Portland Gymnastics Club invitational on August 12. Club manager Bree Mort said the teams faced fierce competition.

“We entered two teams … who competed against 50 gymnasts,” Ms Mort said. “To come first up against those odds was an outstanding effort.” She said the gymnasts varied in experience, with one member of the level two team only taking up the sport eight months ago and the older girls in the level four team having been competing for the past six years. “This is the first time these two incredible teams have taken home first overall,” Ms Mort said. “A champion effort – we are so very proud of all the gymnasts who represented our club.” Esther Lauaki

Debra’s biggest battle By Esther Lauaki Debra Nelson is in the fight of her life – not only for herself, but for others like her. The Kurunjang woman has metastatic leiomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that attacks the body’s connective tissue and which affects fewer than one per cent of people. She was diagnosed in 2013 and the prognosis for Ms Nelson is not good. Despite her diagnosis, Ms Nelson still advocates for new trials and treatments and planned to travel to the annual CanForum Canberra earlier this month where Rare Cancers Australia launched its latest report. But she was too sick to attend. The Rare Solutions: A Time To Act report is aimed at improving the outlook for the 52,000 Australians diagnosed with rare and less common cancers each year. The report is a first-of-its-kind offering support for government, industry and the research community to unite to make access to new medicines and greater support a reality. Ms Nelson knows first-hand the impact of rare cancers and said she wanted to do everything she can to bring about change. “I’ve have a nasty form of sarcoma which is growing in a vein, which blocks my organs,” she told Star Weekly. “When they discovered it, it was at stage four and was at maximum aggressiveness and had spread to my lymph nodes.” Surgery in 2014 removed most of the tumour, but not all of it – the cancer returned last year. Ms Nelson’s treatment has consisted of intensive radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Last week she was accepted into a trial that could add years to her life. There were very few other options for her, she said.

Debra Nelson is fighting a rare form of cancer. (Dennis Manktelow)

“The average life expectancy for people with this kind of cancer is about five years and I’ve had it for nearly four,” she said. “I’m doing my research and reading up on everything. I don’t find much joy in anything these days because I am too busy trying to save my own life.” Rare Cancers Australia chairman Richard

Vines said that patient survival rates for rare forms of the disease have only improved marginally, if at all, while survival rates for more common cancers have improved dramatically. “We simply cannot allow this gap to remain as it is when real change is possible,” he said.

Calder Park landfill fine The operators of Calder Park Raceway have been fined almost $8000 for skirting licensing conditions demanded by the state’s environment watchdog. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria has fined the Keilor motorsport centre $7773 for repeatedly failing to audit its landfill mounds. One of the tracks is ringed by piles of dirt that were shaped to provide viewing platforms for spectators. The mounds are classified as contaminated landfill and are only permitted on the condition that they are regularly monitored by an environmental auditor, EPA metro manager Peter Kerr says. “Many years ago, spectator mounds were created by piling dirt which would have carried some level of contaminant material,” Mr Kerr said. “Calder is licensed to have the spectator mounds … as a condition of their licence, a monitoring program should be in place and verified by an appropriately appointed auditor pursuant to the Environment Protection Act.” He said raceway operators had been reminded of their obligations to test the soil, but had failed to take any action. “At least twice they have been reminded of the need for this process but as they have so far failed to comply they have been fined $7773,” he said. Calder Raceway management were contacted for comment, but did not respond before Star Weekly went to print. Alexandra Laskie

Snakes alive, and out for spring By Esther Lauaki Spring has not sprung yet but snakes are already starting to come out of hibernation across parts of Victoria, including Melton. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning last week issued a notice about the earlier-than-usual snake activity. Nick Clemann, of the Arthur Rylah Institute, said recent warmer weather has brought some snakes out of their winter hibernation. “People might be surprised to see snakes out this early in the year, but it’s not uncommon

for them to be seen in August,” Mr Clemann said. “Even before spring arrives, snakes will be starting to emerge from their winter retreats. “Snakes are more common around the urban fringe or in rural parts of Victoria, but they can also be found close to cities and towns, particularly around watercourses and parkland.” Mr Clemann encouraged residents to start the spring clean as soon as possible because snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, or building materials.

‘‘

Snakes are more common around the urban - Nick Clemman fringe

’’

“People often assume that snakes won’t be around at this time of year, but depending on where people live they could encounter a snake while walking the dog, cycling, bush-walking, gardening or visiting parks,” he said. “Be aware that snakes may be around, and be informed on how to react to them.”

He warned anyone who encounters a snake to keep calm and move away and call DELWP for assistance. “Tiger snakes and lowland copperheads are the most frequently encountered snakes near the coast, while eastern brown snakes are more common in drier areas,” Mr Clemann said. “It is rare for these snakes to bite people, however they are all dangerously venomous.” Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to capture, kill or harm them. Bites usually occur when people try to kill snakes.

A good time is brewing Food and wine lovers are being invited to shake off the winter blues at the second annual Flavours of Moorabool Food and Wine this Sunday. Visitors to the festival, at St Anne’s Vineyards will be able to grab a table and relax by the fire pits as they soak up the sounds of two live bands. Food, wines, gins, craft beers and ciders from local and leading Victorian producers, breweries, vineyards and pop-up bars will all be on offer. Ballan Autumn Festival Association vice-president Matthew Grindrod said this year’s festival had been structured around craft beers and ciders. “From craft beers, wines and cocktails to breads, sweets and food vans – there’s a flavour for everyone,” he said. “Mr Grindrod said that last year more than 800 guests showed up for the festival, which

aims to be one of the premier food and wine tasting events in the shire. Other highlights will include a free taste-and-talk session with the director of Prickly Moses winery and brewery, Andrew Noseda, and special guest cocktail barman Gorge Camorra. Camorra has more than a decade of experience in cocktail bars and representing Australia in cocktail competitions both nationally and internationally. The launch of the Preventing Violence Together 2030 strategy was an incredibly eye-opening experience.

Young people can be incredibly vulnerable, which is why ensuring they are provided a solid source of support within the community has always been a great passion of mine.

At the launch on 15 August, I was troubled to learn that 39 per cent of women have reported being victims of physical or sexual violence by a male perpetrator. This is why Melton Council and its residents must continue coming together to Melton City Council is one of nineteen organisations committed to preventing violence against women in Melbourne’s west, and has proudly been a Preventing Violence Together partner since 2010. The regional partnership and strategy, led by Women’s Health West, aims to guide the primary prevention of men’s violence against women. The launch allowed Council and Djerriwarrh Health Services to showcase the Women Making It Happen campaign, and the fantastic work we are already doing to prevent violence against women. Our vision is to ensure women and girls across Melbourne’s west live free from violence and discrimination and have equal status, rights, opportunities, representation and respect. Violence against women is preventable. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Melton Disability Advisory Committee for their outstanding achievement in the 2017 Victorian Disability Awards. Straw bales and love Merrimu home owners Peter and Natasha Mills will open the doors of their straw bale home to the public next month. The house will be part of the national Sustainable House Day on September 17, when thousands of people will visit some of Australia’s leading green abodes and explore houses that have been designed, built or renovated with sustainability in mind. The Mills describe it as “the house that love built”.

“As complete novices, we started building our straw bale home in October, 2008,” Natasha said. “When we started building we had no idea how tricky it would be to build a house with so many unusual angles. “We have made a lot of mistakes along the way, and there are many things we would do differently if we were to start over. “We absolutely love living in our home and we will look forward to sharing it with you.” The Mills’ house will be open between 10am-4pm on Sunday, September 17. MY PLACE

most wonderful thing about helping out in the community is the people you get to know. When we came here all those years ago with two little girls and a baby, I didn’t know anyone and it was by joining the kinder committee, the school committee – you get to know people and I’m still friends with them now.

Two of Anne Eskdale’s great loves include books and Ballan. She tells Esther Lauaki her story.

What are you passionate about? Providing this wonderful health service that we have in Ballan. I worked for 15 years as a medical secretary as part of the hospital many years ago. It’s a bush nursing hospital, which is a community-owned hospital, so fundraising is very important to keep it going. I’m also very passionate about helping the Red Cross. I thinks it’s an amazing organisation that is based all over the world and I believe in its principles. Where’s your favourite place to spend your time in the area?

(Shawn Smits)

Where I live along the Werribee River with the beautiful parks and the golf course. We’re very blessed to have such a gorgeous outlook and places to walk.

What is your connection to Moorabool? I’ve lived in Ballan for 36 years. My husband came here as the shire engineer for the Shire of Bulla all those years ago, I came with him, and we’ve lived here ever since with our three children. What community initiatives have you been involved in over the years?

I’ve been most involved with fundraising for the Ballan hospital, the Red Cross and St Bridget’s Church. I help out with anything that’s going on in the community. Six years ago, with a friend of mine Mark Mills, I was telling him about how the palliative care room at Ballan hospital needed some furniture. So he and I got together and organised a dinner to raise money for the unit. We are now in our sixth year of running that

dinner. It makes my heart glad to know that the money that we’ve raised to furnish that palliative care room provides a peaceful place for people nearing the end of their lives. What drives you to serve the community? I had wonderful parents that were very involved in our community when I was a child growing up and I learned it from them. The

What would people be surprised to know about you? That I’m a manic reader and I have been all my life. I’m also addicted to watching the Tour de France. I will stay up into the wee hours watching it. What is the best thing about Moorabool? It is the most wonderful place to live. It’s close to the city, but we’re in the country. The natural beauty of the area as well as the wonderful community makes me feel very blessed to live in this amazing place.

Hand-drawn and painted artworks from one of Australia’s most successful children’s authors are on show at Caroline Springs until this Sunday. The exhibition of works by Graeme Base at CS Gallery includes pieces from Animalia, The Eleventh Hour and Uno’s Garden. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the art in Base’s books had been transporting children to magical places for many years. “To have some of Graeme Base’s original artwork at CS Gallery gives residents of all ages an incredible opportunity to see amazing creativity up close,” Cr Ramsey said. Base has created 16 books, sold more than

five million copies around the world and won more than 20 Children’s Choice awards. An orchestral version of The Sign of the Seahorse has been created, while My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch and Jungle Drums have been turned into successful musical stage adaptations. The Eleventh Hour was adapted for one of the famous Myer Christmas window. The Graeme Base exhibition is part of Melton council’s Write On, Read On! WordFest, which runs until August 26. I WANT THE CHURCH TO CHOOSE HOW LONG I SUFFER INTOLERABLE PAIN BEFORE I DIE. YES

NO

I’D RATHER CHOOSE. YES

NO

If you believe in choice, you must make your voice heard. Despite long-term public support, the last two decades have seen 30 attempts to pass a Voluntary Assisted Dying law fail. This is mainly due to fake news and fear campaigns, like the kind the Australian Christian Lobby and Right to Life group are spreading right now in Victoria. They are activating their members to pressure MPs to vote against Voluntary Assisted Dying laws. It’s a tactic that has worked many times before. But polls show that over 75% of Victorians support this law.

The law will be for competent adults with an incurable physical illness, which two doctors expect to cause death within 12 months, and is causing suffering that cannot be relieved. This is the most conservative law of its type proposed anywhere in the world. Those who oppose the law can choose not to use it.

So why should we all suffer for their beliefs? Make it clear to your local MP that this is a law you want. To join our campaign and find the contact details of your local MP visit

StopVictoriansSuffering.org.au

Why should any church decide for all of us? You need to make your voice heard now. Victoria’s politicians will soon vote on a Voluntary Assisted Dying law. Hearing directly from the public will make a difference.

IF YOU BELIEVE IN CHOICE, WE NEED YOUR VOICE.

A stroke of good fortune Melton Swim School has proved it’s the top of the class after winning a national award. The swim school was awarded the Swim and Survive Licensee of the Year by Life Saving Victoria earlier this month for excellence in it’s water safety education programs for children from six months to 14 years of age. Melton Swim School managers Nikki Thorp and Helen Smith said the aquatic centre’s certified teachers were passionate about working with children. “We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life,” Ms Thorp said. “Developing healthy habits with regular physical activity that is fun, together with safe water practices is important for children, as

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds an old favourite’s new format is smokin’ Burn City Smokers has been one of the hotter and more well-known names on the Melbourne barbecue scene for quite a while. But that has been based on activities of the festival and catering variety. Now Burn City has a bricks-and-mortar thing going. Open for a few weeks is the shop front of the Vernon Street kitchen they’ve been using for a year or so. We’re told menus proper are on the way, but in the meantime a prominently displayed blackboard does menu service. It’s not a full menu and the outfit’s website warns the food line-up will be changing regularly. As well, the hours are limited – Friday dinner, Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday lunch and late lunch. Despite all these provisos, the place seems to have made many friends. Nat and I see plenty of Uber bags and other takeaways going out the door, and the locals with whom we share the communal table at the front are enthusiastic. Do we share their enthusiasm? Yes. A side of fries ($7) is fine, though I wish they’d been hotter. A salad of broccoli, almonds, pickled red onion, chilli and garlic ($7) is a great idea, but the sum is less than the parts. Largely this is because it doesn’t really come together as a cohesive whole and the broccoli

BURN CITY TEST KITCHEN Address: 31A Venron Street, South Kingsville Phone: 9043 9554 (open days after noon) florets are too big and undercooked, for my taste anyway. Chicken and potato salad ($18) is good – I like what I eat a lot, though I don’t think Nat is as impressed. The smoked chook – even the breast – is moist and very good, while the seeded mustard-dressed potatoes are fine. Had we been left to our own, non-reviewing devices, we both would’ve ordered the beef short rib. This is, on the list from we’ve been working, the sole, really heavyweight barbecue offering. The “12hr smoked beef rib” is crusty, musty, salty and delicious, the meat tender and excellent. Accompanying, a bit unusually, are honey carrots. I love them, even though they, a bit like the earlier broccoli, are a tad too much on the al dente side. For what’s it worth, the “in bread” efforts we see going by look very worthy of exploration. As do the baked pasta and bangers and mash being enjoyed by the friendly locals at our table. Where clients are the most important partners When two ambitious women, Bernadette Biyan and Stella West, discovered a belief in each other through working together, it gave them the impetus to merge their legal skills and years of experience to found WPC Lawyers in Melton. “We shared a desire to deliver accessible, friendly and specialised legal services to our community, explains Bernadette. “It’s what sparked the idea to launch our practice. Bernadette says she and Stella saw a need for a focused service in wills and probate, an area in which she has 30 years’ experience. “It’s an area of law that doesn’t just require legal understanding. Wills and probate need a level of attention and care often overlooked by firms handling wider matters, and we ‘get’ that people can feel cast aside and kept in the dark as issues arise. “This is why, Bernadette says “we don’t leave our clients to navigate the law as well as their emotions. We keep them well informed with clear advice that allows time to be taken on the journey.

The WPC Lawyers team Sarah Tsotsos, Director Bernadette Biyan and Director/Principal Solicitor Stella West. (Supplied) We believe strongly that support extends much further than just legal advice. Stella says another specialised area of WPC Lawyers is conveyancing, handled by Sarah Tsotsos. “Sarah understands that buying a home is an exciting, memorable and sometimes stressful life chapter and she deals skillfully with conveyance matters. She gives clients one-on-one time and free advice prior to signing any contracts.

“Keeping people fully informed makes contract signing an enjoyable, rather than stressful, event. That’s our consistent approach and our clients really value it. Another string to the practice bow is long experience in criminal law. “We work alongside our in-house barrister Peter Wilkins. He has more than 25 years’ experience in criminal law matters, from the simple to the complex, Stella continues. “And despite

complexities, we’ve achieved optimum outcomes for all our clients. We know everyone makes mistakes in life, but we’re all entitled to a fair go and a fresh start – and that’s what we aim to give. Bernadette has the last word: “We simplify legal matters and we do it with pride and a smile. WPC Lawyers, 33 Bakery Square, Melton. This classic ’70s build is on the curve of Irving Road and as such benefits from a larger-than-usual block size with dual access. In the heart of the recently re-zoned Residential Growth Zone, it is a development site in the making, or an opportunity to either renovate or take advantage of the large allotment and build a new residence (STCA). The floorplan itself comprises of three fitted and carpeted bedrooms (main with fan and double-door wardrobe), a generous L-shaped lounge room and a separate central meals area. The backyard has been updated and has a large shed with a smaller storage shed included. Inclusions are ducted heating, split-system cooling and double garage. Currently rented at $300 per week, invest and sit on this centrally located property, close to Woodgrove Shopping Centre and Coburns Central.

The kitchen has granite benchtops,stainless-steel appliances and good storage. Three fitted bedrooms are all a good size, the main with handy dual access to the contemporary bathroom with high gloss tiles, separate bath and shower, and a moulded basin vanity. A low-maintenance courtyard and ducted heating are inclusions. It’s close to the station and local shopping and has a single garage. Worthy of inspection.

Part of a six-unit complex of similar home-style villas, this well-presented two-bedroom offering would make a fantastic investment. Is it the deep front verandah or the cottage-y style that imbue this place with a sense of romance? Probably both. There’s a certain charm that evokes the days when people sat on their porches and chatted with passersby – and if that still happens, it would be in the kicked-back village of Eynesbury. Inside the house, it’s all about glossycontemporary, although romance is hinted at in the white sheers softening the

dove-grey roller blinds on black-framed windows. Wall paint is white, carpet and tiling are grey, and attractive floating floorboards bring their sheen. Those floorboards begin in the entry hall and head past the main bedroom, a lounge room through double doors, and a set-back laundry before culminating in the expansive living hub. Except for a pearl-grey glass splashback, the kitchen is all white – including the

stone that tops the island brekkie bench for four. There’s a walk-in pantry swelling already plentiful storage, as well as a 900mm cooker and a dishwasher. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and a spacious en suite with storage-rich vanity. Three more fitted bedrooms share a rear hallway with the gleaming main bathroom. There are a few places to relax outdoors. One is an integrated alfresco area, the spot

for sun sheltering; another is a large patio to sit out in the sunshine; and yet another open deck will catch north-easterly rays. To bring some essential green, there’s a strip of lawn amid otherwise minimal landscaping. Eynesbury Homestead and the golf course are a 15-minute amble away, Exford Primary School is 10 minutes by car and Melton shops about 15. SPORT World beckons for weightlifter Teagan Newman has made extraordinarily fast progress as a weightlifter. A year ago, Newman was using the sport as an extra training strand to bolster her athletics career, in which she excelled at the discus and hammer throw. After a chat with track and field coach Brent Vallance about her potential as a weightlifter, Newman decided to change course and take up weightlifting full-time. Since then, the personal best lifts and the honours have been stacking up for Newman, confirming to her that weightlifting is where her future lies. Newman’s first major competition was last year’s national championships, in which she delivered an eye-opening fourth-place finish. That was achieved on one day a week training and without the expert guidance of the coaches at the Hawthorn Weightlifting Club. At that stage, Newman was lifting about 112 kilograms, but that has improved exponentially in the months since. “Now my PB is 137 kilograms,” Newman

said. “To see my improvement over the nine months or so before I got the PB, it showed me that I can progress in leaps and bounds over the next few years. If I can improve that quickly, it will be good to see how I can improve over the next few years.” Newman represented Victoria for a second time on the national stage this year. Her lift of 137 kilograms was enough to take out the 69-75 kilogram class. The 19-year-old is now rated one of the rising stars of Australian weightlifting. “It was great to see my improvement over the months because I didn’t expect to go to nationals and win,” Newman said. “I actually won by 16 kilograms. “They have a rankings system on the Australian Weightlifting Federation site and I’m ranked sixth in Australia for most improved.” Newman, a postwoman from Hoppers Crossing, has qualified to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Oceania Junior Championships on the Gold Coast next month. “That’s my first big step,” said Newman, who

is coached by Anthony Dove. “I’m quietly nervous, but I’m determined to do the best that I can. I’m hoping to go out there and get another PB because I’ve been training hard for it.” Newman is targeting Australian representation for next year’s World Junior Championships. She thinks the 2018 Commonwealth Games is out of reach, but is determined to make it to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Newman is the August nominee of the Deeble Rising Star Award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Newman will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist her in achieving her sports goals. Lance Jenkinson

Cobras close in on finals By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh is finding form at the right time of the season and is just a win away from a grand final appearance in AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League. The Cobras entered the division 2 finals on the back of a bye in the final round, but had won their past three matches to finish third. With a double chance in their hands, the Cobras had nothing to lose against Drysdale Hawks on Sunday afternoon. The Cobras produced one of their best performances of the season, winning 6.14 (50)-1.4 (10). The Cobras did most of the damage in the first half, kicking 5.7 to 1.2 to lead by 31 points at half-time. Cobras’ coach Hayley Gossow was thrilled with the result. “We had a real good win which was pleasing,” she said. “We had a bye in the final round but played Drysdale the week before that so it’s a second straight time we’ve played them. “They had beaten us twice, but we beat them by eight points and it gave us confidence. “Everything just clicked today.” Madalyn Clarke, who took out the division 2 leading goalkicker award, kicked three goals in the win. Jacinta Reid, Clarke and Emily Crawford were named the Cobras’ best. Gossow said Zhoe Clarke and Elise Korteman were also standouts. The win is the Cobras’ first ever finals win. They lost an elimination final last year. With all teams playing finals this season, Gossow said their aim had been to finish in the top three and earn a double chance. Now she knows if they show the form they did at the weekend the side is a chance to make the grand final. First they need to get past Carisbrook, who finished top of the ladder, only percentage ahead of Drysdale. The winner of the semi-final goes through to the grand final, the loser to the preliminary final. Carisbrook, which had a bye in the first week of the finals, had two losses for the season, the most recent in round 11 to the Cobras. “We’ve only had one win against them, the last time we played them,” Gossow said. “Anything can happen in finals like it was shown today. “We’ll focus on this week and hopefully we can get another win.”

In other results, Gisborne easily accounted for Redan Gold in the elimination final, winning 8.2 (50)-0.2 (2). The Bulldogs now face Drysdale for a spot in the preliminary final.

Meanwhile, Cobras duo Abby Bertram and Zhoe Clarke were named in the AFL Goldfields team of the year on Friday night. The team is a combined division 1 and 2 team.

Women to play a Centrals role for first time A new era is dawning at Melton Centrals Cricket Club, with the club to field a women’s side for the first time this season. A couple of conversations at the club after last season set the wheels in motion for the expansion. Candace Hulett, who played at the club last season in one of the men’s sides, has been appointed the Centrals’ inaugural women’s coach. She said there had been a lot of interest. “I’d played premier cricket for 16 years and decided to take a year off and come and play with the men at Centrals,” she said. “I had a lot of fun … a few of the other girls said we should start a team. A few of the junior girls asked if I would coach the team and it’s gone from there.” Hulett said the club had 10 confirmed players and another couple interested. “There’s a real mix of players,” Hulett said. “The youngest is 12 and we go up to middle-age women. We’ve got some of the wives and girlfriends wanting to play. “The competition we’re playing in, the CV Women’s Community Cricket, is for all ages and abilities.” Hulett, who played for Victoria’s second XI side and represented the state at junior level, said the real community feel had made her want to play cricket at this level and at Centrals. As well as playing at a high level, Hulett has coached the Western Spirit under-16 representative team for the past seven years and will use her experience to help guide the club’s younger female players. Hulett said they were still looking for players of all ages and abilities to join the side. The side will play at Blackwood Reserve in a mixture of T20 and one-day matches, with most games on Sundays. “Anyone who wants to have a bit of fun can come down,” she said. “We’ve started training and will train every Saturday morning until the season starts.” Details: 0418 438 228 or website@ meltoncentrals.com.au Tara Murray 43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 22, 2017

All smiles at Bloods HQ By Tara Murray Melton overcame some third-quarter jitters to stand tall and seal its first win of the Ballarat Netball League A-grade season. The Bloods have found the going tough this season, but on Saturday against Melton South they had something to smile about. And it wasn’t a game in which they snuck over the line – for most of it they were in control, with the 32-23 scoreline reflective of the result. Bloods playing coach Katie Kakoschke was as excited as anyone to finally claim a victory. “They have worked so hard this season and it’s been a real struggle, but they never gave up,” she said. “Today there was a couple of times it was iffy and Melton South came back, but the girls kept their patience.” Defence was where the game was set up for the Bloods, enabling them to force turnovers across the court. Kakoschke led the way at goal defence, inspiring her younger teammates and making it hard for the Panthers to get any flow. “All I said was we had to put pressure on all the way down the court,” Kakoschke said. “They will get weary and make errors. Having pressure all over the court made getting intercepts a lot easier.” Most pleasing for Kakoschke was the way the young attacking end players responded when they were challenged. In the third quarter, the Panthers shot four straight goals to reduce the margin from six goals to two. “Our girls, I reckon, had a five- to 10-minute period where we struggled to get it into the ring, but they composed themselves,” Kakoschke said. “That’s what I said to them – have patience just work it down easy. In the last quarter, they walked back out and protected the ball and did what they’ve been practising all year. “I said, ‘don’t be afraid to keep possession of the ball’. We took off in the last quarter.” Jessica Kalmar was named best on court, while goal attack Ebony Carter (23 goals) and centre Morgan Bleszcz were also instrumental. The only downside for the Bloods was Kakoschke coming off injured in the dying seconds after landing on her tailbone, which she injured the week before. She later admitted she had been told by doctors that she shouldn’t play due to a “bent” tailbone. “I just had to play against Melton South,” she said. While there’s only one round remaining in this year’s BNL season, Kakoschke said the win would be important going forward. “They really needed it,” she said. “Last week we played one of the top teams and we were two goals down at quarter-time and they were shocked. “I said, ‘you deserve to be that close’. They’ve been thereabouts, but they just need to build consistently. If they can keep going, I think we’ll have a good season next year.”

Diggers Rest enters the Riddell District Football League finals on the back of its lowest score in a number of years. With third spot already sealed up and with only a small chance of finishing second, the Burras rested several players in their final round match against ladder leaders Macedon. And it showed with the Burras struggling to score on what was a tough day weather wise. The Burras managed just six scoring shots, losing to the Cats 9.13 (67)-2.4 (16). Josh Wallace and Mick Kilty were the goal-scorers for the Burras, who didn’t score a goal in the second half. Brandon Kilty was named the best in the loss. The Burras now face the Sunbury Kangaroos in an elimination final on Sunday at Romsey Park. Melton Centrals finished their season on a high with a final round victory against Lancefield. Scores were level at quarter-time, before the Centrals opened the game up and led by 29 points at the main break. The margin increased in the second half with Centrals winning 19.7 (121)-8.6 (54). Michael Egan kicked five goals in a best on ground performance. Linton Hogan kicked three goals, and Joshua Spry and Blake Henderson also had good games. Centrals’ finished the season in eighth spot with seven wins. Rockbank’s tough end to the year was a third straight 100-point loss. On Saturday they faced second-placed Rupertswood and the Rams were never in the game, losing 22.18 (150)-4.3 (27). Thomas Greenwood kicked two goals for the Rams, with Joshua Williams named the side’s best. The Rams finished the season in 11th. Tara Murray

Riddell league keen to keep the status quo The format of the Riddell District Football Netball League is set to stay the same for now, after a review into football and netball leagues in the region. AFL Goldfields last week presented clubs its findings of the review of senior football and netball for the four competitions it oversees. In the draft recommendations, AFL Goldfields recommended that the RDFNL stay with it’s 12 team format for 2018. It also recommended a further review of the RDFNL senior competition in 2021 to revisit whether the league should expand into two divisions. Throughout the review several clubs, mostly those in the bottom part of the competition, said they felt their future in the league was in doubt if a two-tier competition wasn’t started. 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 22, 2017

A two-tier competition would likely include clubs from the Ballarat Football Netball League. The BFNL’s eastern clubs, Sunbury Lions, Bacchus Marsh, Melton, Melton South and Darley, expressed a strong desire to stay in the BFNL and there was little support for that competition to go to two divisions. Gisborne, which plays in the Bendigo Football Netball League, said it would be interested in joining an RDFNL division 1 competition if the BFNL eastern clubs were to rejoin the RDFNL. The Bulldogs though were not interested in joining the BFNL. AFL Goldfields also recommended talks with Rupertswood Football Netball Club about a possible affiliation in the BFNL in the short to medium term. Sharks president Brad Pietromonaco said

this was the first the club had heard of the recommendations and they had no plans to move to any other league. He said the club was in favour of the two division competition. The draft recommendations stated it was important for AFL Goldfields and the RDFNL to continue to consider options for moving to a two-tier competition. AFL Goldfields expects junior clubs Eynesbury and Gisborne Giants to likely field senior teams in the future, making it important to have an entry level competition for them to start in. On the netball side, AFL Goldfields has recommended that a player points system be introduced across all four of its leagues to address the rising cost of player payments.

The findings of all four leagues found clubs were in favour of this. Other draft recommendations included: • Sebastopol transfers from the BFNL to the Central Highlands Football Netball League; • Additional divisions for netball in the BFNL; • Lobby AFL Victoria for a reduction of player points and salary cap for the Western Region and Essendon District football leagues below their premier grades; and • A new competition to be formed in 2019 involving teams from CHFL and Maryborough and Castlemaine Football Netball League. The draft recommendations have been put out to clubs for feedback. A final report will be released later this year. Tara Murray

Centrals finds competition tough in new league Melton Centrals will look back on the 2017 AFL Goldfields’ Women’s Football League season as a learning experience. After being one of the stronger teams in the former Victorian Women’s Football League north-west competition the past two years, which included playing in two straight grand finals, Centrals were knocked out in an elimination final on Sunday. Coach Janelle Martin said this year’s competition had been tough. “We weren’t happy with the competition we’re in but we’ve stuck at it and got through,” she said. “We’ve definitely got better every game.” With two wins, Centrals finished fifth and

secured the last finals berth. “I’m not sure how we got there,” Martin said before the weekend. “Everyone knows what’s going to happen at the end of the season anyway, North Geelong will win easy.” Centrals’ season came to end on Sunday, losing to East Point. The Dragons kicked the only three goals of the first three quarters and led by 22 points at three-quarter time. Centrals kicked two late goals but it wasn’t enough, losing 3.8 (26)-2.6 (18). Sally Martin and Alice Masters were the goal-scorers for Centrals. Linda Morren and Kate Saleta were named the side’s best. Martin said this season was a reality check

playing against players of a higher level. “It was a great experience for some players to learn what losing was. “It has been a great experience for the players, but it has been hard as well. We lost some girls as it was too hard. We’ve been short on numbers for a lot of the season.” Martin, who has had to pull on the jumper to help make up numbers in the team, said the wins were the highlights for the season. “It’s been good for the new girls, who haven’t played in a win before. When you’re getting smashed [a win] is a confidence booster.” Rachael Jackson, who had never played football before, was one player who has risen to the challenge.

Melton edges out rivals By Tara Murray Melton South remains in the race for a Ballarat Football League finals’ spot, but arch rivals Melton weren’t so lucky. With the four teams fighting for a finals berth playing each other, Saturday’s matches were virtually elimination finals two weeks early. This only added to the normally big cross-town rivalry between the Panthers and the Bloods. And it was a game which could have gone either way. Both teams had periods of dominance when they were kicking to the scoring end, but it was the Panthers who made the most of their opportunities. Heading into the last quarter, the Panthers led by 10 points.

Melton Thoroughbreds star Ivan Harris has been named as a finalist in the Big V men’s division 1 all-star five and most valuable player award. Harris is one of 10 finalists for those categories. Rising Thoroughbreds star Billy Feben has been nominated for the division 1 youth player of the year award. Broden Collins is up for three awards in men’s youth league 2, with nominations for rising star award, MVP and all-star five.

Netball

Melton Centrals and Diggers Rest will both enter the Riddell District Netball League finals on the back of losses. Centrals pushed Lancefield for three quarters, but were outscored 17-7 in the final quarter, losing 53-39. Diggers Rest suffered its second straight loss, losing to ladder leaders Macedon 38-32. The results mean the Burras face Lancefield and Centrals take on Rupertswood in elimination finals this weekend.

’’

- Sean Triplett

The Bloods had the scoring end in the final quarter, but despite dominating play couldn’t find the big sticks. In the first 24 minutes of the quarter just two points, both to the Bloods, had been scored. The Bloods got the first goal of the quarter via a free kick and 50-metre penalty with two minutes remaining to reduce the margin to within a goal. The Panthers weren’t to be denied and a Jon Kent mark and goal sealed the win for them, 13.7 (85)-12.6 (78). Panthers co-coach Sean Triplett said it was a brilliant game of football in testing conditions. “I thought our guys were sensational,” he said. “We won the clearances by 17, which was an incredible display of contested footy, but they got us on the outside a little bit. “The last quarter there was 16 [forward] entries for them and six for us. It was everyone who stood up defensively. “Our defenders were great and the mids as well as the forwards pushed up. I think we did what we had to do. “It’s the best we’ve played as a team all year.” Triplett said he thought the difference in the game was that his side converted when it had the wind. Nick Kommer was brilliant in a best-on-ground performance, while Mark Lynch and Adam El Houli also had outstanding games. Triplett had praise for younger players David Callus and Aaron Clarke who stood up when needed. The result leaves the Panthers in seventh spot, equal on points but eight per cent behind East Point. Both sides have difficult tasks ahead of them. The Panthers face third-placed Darley, while East Point plays second-placed Lake Wendouree.

Martin said next season loomed as an important one with at least 10 players looking to retire. A big chunk of the squad is aged over 30. Martin has also decided that she won’t continue coaching. “I’m done,” she said. “I started the club and I’ve done everything, “I’ll make sure the club doesn’t die and it keeps running. We have a couple of youth girls who will come up, but we’ll need quite a few new players.” Meanwhile, Sally Martin was named on the bench in the AFL Goldfields Women’s team of the year.

TAC Cup

Western Jets continue to push for a finals spot in the TAC Cup after a win against the Northern Knights. The Jets led at every break, but it was game-on at three-quarter time with the lead only three points. The Jets kicked the only two goals of the final quarter, to win 9.12 (66)-7.8 (50). Darcy Cassar kicked four for the Jets, with Lachlan Fogarty and Cameron Rayner were named the Jets best. The Jets are 10th with two rounds remaining.

WRFL

Caroline Springs season has come to an end with a big loss to Spotswood in Western Region Football League division 1. The Lakers, which have only won two games for the season, were in the game for three quarters before being blown away in the final quarter. Spotswood kicked nine goals to one in the final quarter, winning 18.16 (124)-9.3 (57). The Lakers finish the year ninth, only percentage ahead of bottom side Wyndhamvale.

EDFL

Triplett said they owed Darley after a humiliating display in their previous encounter, when the Devils led by 100 points at half-time. “They smashed us last time and they were unbelievable,” he said. “That’s probably the worst we’ve played. We won’t die wondering. Fingers crossed we can get the win.” For Melton, it’s all but season over as they sit four points and 10 per cent outside the top six. The Bloods’ small finals hopes rely on both the Panthers and East Point being smashed, and a big win against North Ballarat. In other results, Bacchus Marsh defeated Sebastopol 22.28 (160)-1.3 (9).

Hillside will enter the finals on the back of a disappointing loss to Airport West in Essendon District Football League division 1. With second spot all but assured, the Sharks had little to play for, while the Eagles needed to win to make finals. The Eagles opened the game up after quarter-time winning, 15.8 (98)-10.8 (68). The Sharks will face Glenroy in a semi-final this

RESIDENT TESTIMONIALS “We love our quality affordable new home. Our Lifestyle Consultant and Village Managers were so helpful and supportive. The terms were clear, transparent and there were no surprises. We have never regretted our decision. We have a great Community and facilities including the vegetable gardens and gym. Everybody is so friendly. We are not in each others pockets but only seconds away if needed. We like to be involved and I “Lyn” enjoy running our singing group - supported by our Grand Piano in our amazing Community Centre while Dale likes to manage the Club Bar. We have a clear path for both our futures.” DALE & LYN
