Coal exports ‘fear’ ‘Asians interested in Alcoa site’

By NOEL MURPHY

TANGO AND CASH FOR AUTHOR P5

COAL MINE opponents fear Alcoa’s Anglesea power plant could be expanded for export sales to Asia. Surf Coast Air Action (SCAA) believes at least two Asian companies are interested in the open-cut mine and power station amid a “secret push” to move the coal through a deepened Geelong port. SCAA spokesperson Re-

gina Gleeson said “confidential sources” believed Asian-based companies might be interested in buying the facility. Ms Gleeson said the closure of Alcoa’s Point Henry operations would leave Victoria oversupplied with electricity and the value of the Anglesea mine reduced unless exploited for coal exports.

“Why would a company spend millions to buy a mine when you’re already over-supplied? The Victorian Government actively promotes export sales from the Latrobe Valley (and) Anglesea is a very rich site. “When you put it all together...” A SCAA statement cited

fears that any sale might fail to honour Alcoa’s past guarantees about restricting the mining area. The statement quoted Anglesea resident Colleen Packham expressing concern and “an expansion of mining into the fragile Anglesea heath (and) coal being trucked to Geelong on local roads, (which) would be a nightmare for residents”.

Ms Gleeson said any mine expansion for coal exports would sound a “death knell for local business that rely upon the tourist dollar”. SCAA’s Dr Jacinta Morahan said Anglesea residents were “understandably anxious because they are being kept in the dark and treated with contempt by both Alcoa and the State Government”. Double Take TOO many cooks might spoil the broth but perhaps they underwhelm with the serving size as well. Consider the taskforce formed in July 2013 to deliver a “draft vision” for iconic Bells Beach. First, a team of experts was assembled. Then ex-deputy premier John Thwaites was appointed chair. Next they developed a “community engagement process”. They conducted a web forum, they sought public submissions, they fielded ideas from “around the world”. They toiled, talked, crafted and conflated. Finally the draft vision has been released: “To respect and protect the natural environment, indigenous heritage and surfing culture of Bells Beach.” Worth every 1.25 words per month.

HOW long before Tim Truong, owner of dilapdiated heritage eyesore The Ritz, takes the property back off the market? He’s lodged umpteen redevelopment applications but never followed through on any. He’s also had the place up for sale but usually for at least twice the going rate, according to one agent. The latest price, between $3 million and $7 million, might be over the mark, too, given the T&G buiilding, for instance, recently sold for $1.9 million. With expressions of interest closing next week, The Ritz will probaby be back off the market quick smart, like last time when it didn’t last a month. MEANWHILE, other buildings are winning awards - even dunnies. And on this front Geelong’s ring road has been flush with success.

The Victorian Architecture Awards have recognised two rest areas on the new Waurn Ponds section, earning BKK Architects a ‘small project architecture award’. Something to think about next time you’re in the small room there. IT’S tough work but someone has to do it. The latest position up for grabs is likely to have folks banging the door down in South Geelong’s Swanston St. Advertised as “Beer jobs: Venue Manager, Little Creatures, Geelong”, it offers “an excellent salary and bonus structure, nine-day fortnight, generous staff discount on delicious Craft beers and enormous potential for career advancement ...” Mmmm, generous staff discount, but you had us at “beer jobs”.

US trip report eight months later

A COUNCIL bio-tech delegation to the United States has delivered its report eight months after attending a series of industry meetings. The BioGeelong Network delegation was aimed at improving prospects of developing the biotech industry in Geelong. BioGeelong Chair, Cr Bruce Harwood, and representatives from Deakin University, CSIRO and Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) attended meetings in Manhattan, Kansas and Atlanta, in November. A report to this week’s council meeting said developing the bio-tech industry locally offered “significant” employment opportunities “Atlanta is a world-renowned region in bio science and presents investment opportunities for Gee-

TRAVELLER: Cr Bruce Harwood. long and the chance to learn from Atlanta’s start-up success to further develop the industry locally,” Cr Harwood reported. “Developing the biotech industry also offers significant employment opportunities for Geelong, hence the building of the relationships with the University of Georgia, Atlanta, is seen as a critical step in this direction. “Geelong is well-placed to at-

tract start-up businesses involved in the commercialisation of medical products, which could offer significant employment opportunities in our region.” Cr Harwood said further research into a One Health concept of the connection of health of animals in the wild crossing over to domestic animals and ultimately to humans could result. Geelong was also recognised as a world-renowned bio science centre, with facilities such as its high-security Australian Animal Health Laboratory, CSIRO and the development of a Geelong Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases, he said. Council established the BioGeelong network in 2005 to develop Geelong into Australia’s biotech epicentre.

‘Bad time’ for demise of jobs body

In brief

Network funding axed GEELONG’S key jobs networking organisation faces closure with the loss of almost $500,000 in Federal Government funding. Funding for the Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) runs out at the end of the year after the Government axed a federal Partnership Broker Program. LLEN executive officer Anne-Marie Ryan said the organisation could survive until March if it helding back some of its funds. State Government has committed to a $2.3 million funding package

for 31 LLENs around Victoria. “But we can’t survive on that. Other networks are already losing experience and valuable staff because of the uncertainty,” Ms Ryan said. “Geelong faces a complex problem that can’t be solved by any one sector, which is why the LLEN’s role is so important. “We know that redundancy leads to health issues for workers, which costs the health system a lot more than funding us in the first place. “The network has been a unique and vital community resource to industry, business, schools and government over 12 years of partnership building.”

State opposition skills spokesman Steve Herbert called the decision “bloody-minded and dumb”. “The networks and links established by the Geelong region LLEN are incredible and its effectiveness far outweighs the cost of the service,” he said. Labor Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville said the cut coincided with“huge challenges and big issues” facing Geelong. “With the amount of workers being made redundant we face a skills drain as they seek jobs elsewhere,” Ms Neville said. Geelong Trades Hall secretary Tim

Gooden said the LLEN filled a crucial need for data on school leavers, university and training places and job seekers. “Without the kind of research and data the LLEN provides, it leaves everybody at a loss to know what’s really going on,” Mr Gooden said. The Independent revealed three weeks ago that a National Centre for Vocation and Education Research had cast doubt on the value of multi-million-dollar rescue funds for the region. A spokesperson said State Government was working on “transition arrangements” for the LLENs in light of the federal funding cuts.

Coal export fear From page 1 “People are entitled to know who is interested in buying. Will the mine expand and, if so, by how much? “Will coal be trucked out of town for export, giving rise to further serious health and environmental concerns?” Alcoa had not responded to the Independent’s request for comment before the paper went to press but last week it confirmed multiple potential buyers had expressed interest in the site. A spokesperson for Transport and Roads Minister Terry Mulder said State Government had “no plans to export coal out of Geelong port”. “If Alcoa was in talks with any Asian companies that would be commercial in confidence, they would not be required to notify government. “They don’t have to come to us until there might be plans and then they’d be subject to regulations. It’s out of our hands at this stage. “The Essential Services Commission is the independent body that oversees these things. The only part we play is ensure they (Alcoa) continue to act in line with regulations they are subject to and they are doing that.” Eighty jobs will be lost if Alcoa fails to find a buyer for the Anglesea site, which supplies power to the company’s Point Henry plant. Alcoa begins closing Point Henry next week, with the loss of 800 jobs.

Condolence books CONDOLENCE books for victims of the Air Malaysia flight MH17 disaster are available at the offices of local state MPs, they have announced. Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos said the books were “an opportunity for the community to pay its respects to the lives lost”.

Signs approved ADVERTISEMENTS 20-metres high are set to run up light towers outside Simonds Stadium. Geelong’s council this week ticked off on the lights signage when it agreed to seek the Planning Minister’s approval for an amendment allowing the ads.

Voice silenced OCEAN Grove singer Johnny Rollins has lost his bid to win television talent show The Voice. Rollins was bundled out in third place this week despite the mentoring of pop star Kylie Minogue, when 18-year-old Anja Nissen was crowned winner for 2014.

More buses BUSES services every 20 minutes “or better” in urban Geelong is a target of a new public transport strategy for the city. Geelong’s council has adopted the strategy of municipalities alliance body G21, which would also seek to simplify bus services and improve central Geelong’s buses interchange.

Lara program A YOUTH delinquency program with proven results will spread to Geelong after success overseas, Crime Prevention Minister Edward O’Donohue has announced. He said Lara would be one of four Victorian locations hosting the Communities that Care program, found to reduce crime and “heavy” abuse of alcohol and drugs by 30 per cent.

Man in court on ‘disappearance’ A 36-YEAR-OLD man has been remanded in custody without applying for bail over the disappearance of Leopold’s Paul Kingsbury. The Indented Head man faces seven charges: one of kidnapping, three of false imprisonment, two of threatening to inflict serious injury and one of threatening to kill. He was remanded in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. A legal order prevented the Independent from publishing his name. Homicide squad detectives arrested the man at Portarlington on Tuesday. Mr Kingsbury, disappeared in suspicious circumstances earlier in the month. He was last seen at a Moolap address on 6 July. The Indented Head man is scheduled to reappear in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 12 December.

TWO DISUED netball courts at Ocean Grove will become free land to house people with disabilities, Geelong’s council has announced. Councillors voted this week to seek expressions of interest from not-for-profit agencies to develop supported disability accommodation on the site, which some residents had wanted kept as public open space.

Compost search FARMLAND near Geelong is set to turn into a compositing site to handle the city’s green waste. Council announced this week it was seeking a five-hectare site for the “processing facility” after planning laws changed to allow composting on farmland.

FOUR artists from the Geelong region are vying for a $30,000 pay day in the region’s premier art prize. Geelong Gallery has revealed Vicki Clissold, Dick Collis, Peter Hill and Felicity Spear among the 44 artists in the running for the gallery’s biennial acquisitive awards for contemporary art. The gallery said the entrants’ 42 works would go on exhibition after the winner was announced on 29 August. The gallery received “hundreds of entries from around the country”, it said. “This year’s exhibition will include paintings by some of the nation’s most talented established and younger-generation artists working in a variety of subject matter and styles.”

A RENEWABLE energy entrepreneur believes Geelong can take charge of its power future and replace lost manufacturing jobs into the bargain. Andrew Thaler said the region needed to take responsibility for its renewable energy sector instead of waiting for government rebates or subsidies. Mr Thaler visited Geelong on Wednesday for a sustainability networking event to share his experience in forging ahead on renewable energy after buying rundown Singleton Solar Farm. “Geelong’s going through what other regions have experienced, the vaporisation of mass manufacturing, and it’s not something easily replaced, so regions have to be careful about where they invest because there are a lot

POWER: Andrew Thaler. of white elephants out there,” he said. “It’s a tricky one to try and recover that inertia. It’s part of the process we’re all going through; we’re all facing the question of what do we do now. “But it’s no good keeping s**t industries going. These are the questions around the Anglesea power station as well.

“The King Island wind farm is not happening but that doesn’t mean it’s dead. It can be resurrected because it is feasible. “If you take the emotion and politics out of the equation, you find there are things you can do as a community. “For instance, community solar can be done anywhere. It’s not limited by geography and it has to be part of the energy mix.” The farmer, electrical engineer and scrap metal recycler from Nimmitabel, in southern New South Wales, said he planned to repair and expand the 2.75-hectare solar farm and another photovoltaic array in Sydney. “Both sites require significant investment. I’m also planning to construct a third solar PV farm on our land with both a commercial section and a larger communityparticipation section.”

IT TAKES TWO: Alli Sinclair with her latest novel, Luna Tango. 123680 Picture: REG RYAN

THE TANGO is regarded as the Everest of dance; an addictive mix of pleasure, pain and passion. Just ask Geelong author Alli Sinclair, who’s fallen in love with the fiery dance and all things Latin. Sinclair has signed a deal with international publisher Harlequin MIRA for a three-book series based on dance, with South America’s tango leading the way. Her book, Luna Tango, the first of The Dance Card trilogy and due for release next week, is set in Argentina. The main character, Dani McKenna, is an Australian who discovers that her family connection to tango is deeper and more complex than she imagined. Sinclair “always had a book in hand”, writing her own stories as a student at Belmont High School, she said. Later years spent in other countries, including Argentina, Peru and Canada, enhanced her appreciation of dance and inspired The Dance Card series. “Each book is centred around dance. Luna Tango is set in Argentina, the second book in Spain and the third in Paris,” Sinclair said. “All the books have a family saga mixed in with a mystery and romance. “There are two stories to every book - an historical and a present-day story. The historical story spreads across decades and doesn’t get solved until the present-day story.” Although never a “tango diva or ballerina”, Sinclair said she loved the energy and passion of dance. “I’ve always been fascinated with everything tango. I did a lot of it when I lived in South America. “Everyone can interpret it differently. You might have two people look at tango and one’s moved to tears of sadness and the other to tears of joy. “This is reflected within my characters - the three women all have different experiences with the tango.” Sinclair spent four months writing Luna Tango followed by a year of revisions. She has now started work on Flamenco Fire, due out next year. “I’ve also got a couple of ideas for other stories. The next one will be centred around theatre.”

SPECIALISING IN CHINESE MEDICINE

A BITTER legal brawl is unfolding between Darryn Lyons and former mayor Brian Fowler over advertisements during last year’s mayoral election campaign. Mayor Lyons lodged defamation action in the Supreme Court, claiming Mr Fowler authorised advertisements that “gravely injured” his feelings. Prominent businessmen including Frank Costa paid for the ads, arguing Cr Lyons was an inferior candidate to Ken Jarvis. Mr Jarvis has maintained he was unaware of the ads before they appeared. Mr Fowler’s defence countered this week, accusing Cr Lyons of “belligerent and intolerant” behaviour and referring to celebrities’ various legal actions against his former company, Big Pictures. Cr Lyons lashed out at reports on the Fowler defence. “There are factions from the top end of town who want to see the mayor brought down,” he told the Independent. “I’m doing a top job. I’m work-

ing incredibly hard for Geelong but there are some vested interests that don’t want change, don’t like Geelong being progressive and they’re trying to bring down the mayor.” The legal stoush follows a Australian Services Union (ASU) bid to solicit complaints against Cr Lyons with a free-call hotline. ASU assistant secretary Richard Duffy said the union was “forced to set up” the hotline after being “inundated with calls from members, non-members and residents” with “serious concerns” about Cr Lyons’ leadership. A recorded message on the hotline fails to mention Cr Lyons, instead calling for complaints about the “poor behaviour and practices of senior management and councillors”. “With your help we can clean up Geelong city council. Thank you,” the message says. Cr Lyons issued a terse statement about the hotline, describing it as a stunt and suggesting the union would be “better off contributing positively to Geelong rather than trying to tear it down”.

Support rising for park space By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

F L O O R S T O C K

ALMOST 1.3km of new footpaths will link residents with community facilities around Leopold, according to their ward councillor. Rod Macdonald said the latest stage in the town’s “strategic footpath network program would connect Leopold Shopping Centre with Bellarine Rail Trail and residential areas off Melaluka Rd. Local contractors were building the footpaths “in accordance with standard industry practice, he said. City Hall had contributed $407,000 to the $607,000 project, with State Government covering the rest of the cost. Cr Macdonald said the program was now “nearing completion.

LOCAL musicians Wayne Jury, Tim Neal and Stephen McEwan have thrown their weight behind a controversially proposed performance space for an Ocean Grove community park. The trio have joined a Facebook page called Support The Ocean Grove Performance Space, established to counter a group of park association members opposing the $1 million facility. Ocean Grove Park Association committee agreed last week to hold a special general meeting over the proposal. Association member Christine Brooks said she requested the meeting with the support of 26 other signatories, including eight foundation members.

Ms Brooks said the meeting would consider a series of proposed amendments to association rules, restricting decisions to less than $20,000. “If these resolutions are passed, the proposed multi-purpose building will not go ahead, Ms Brooks said. “The committee will not be able to make a decision of such financial magnitude again unless it has been endorsed in-principle by special resolution at a members meeting. Ms Brooks said the date of the special general meeting had yet to be set because the association rules prescribed a 21-day notice. Members were concerned the performance space would leave the association with a heavy financial burden, she said.

But other association members have come out in support of the performance space. Colleen Moloney posted on the Facebook support page: “I cannot believe that such a small vocal negative group of people can be so rude and complain about having a great community asset built for the whole community to enjoy. Shamus McEwan said: “So is it getting built? Haters are always gonna hate so build it anyway. Ward councillor Jan Farrell, also a support page member, said the “awful behaviour of some of the objectors was disappointing. “Whatever your viewpoint, there’s always a place for common courtesy, especially in Ocean Grove.

NDIS trial flawed, says review By NOEL MURPHY

“commonality of vision” for NDIS outcomes. “However, the detailed design required to achieve this vision has neither been agreed nor fully conceptualised by all stakeholders.” The report warned of “significant risks” to the scheme developing “effectively and sustainably”. Accountability and decision-making appeared to be “disconnected from those who understand the potential operational impacts”, KPMG said. The Independent has reported complaints from clients about the NDIS trial

CRITICAL shortcomings threaten the long-term prospects of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), according to a review. The KPMG review identified “constraints” in the ability of trial sites, including Geelong, to “represent the breadth of participants” and services covered by the scheme. National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) commissioned the review, which confirmed fundamental flaws in the scheme. KPMG said stakeholders share a

cutting existing services and refusing to provide new assistance. Clients complained about excessive paperwork, meetings, referrals and follow-up procedures, describing them as stressful, time-consuming and exhausting. Complaints to the NDIS’s Facebook page, which have since been removed, included inflexible guidelines and cuts to mobility allowances and early intervention services for children with disabilities and developmental delays. A leading health economist accused the Geelong NDIS trial centre of delib-

erately cutting clients from services and funding, denying their rights and ignoring complaints. Other recent complaints to the Independent have included: A woman with double limb amputations due to diabetes rejected on the basis she had medical disabilities; Concerns suppliers were pressured into making, supplying and fitting wheelchairs costed at 10 hours of work when many required 200-plus; Applications rejected for one-on-one disability support in cases of moderate to severe disability;

· · ·

to pay travel allowances to dis· Refusal ability workers; of applications for help from · Rejection parents with autistic children; providers pressured to redefine · Service services, increasing their risk of cuts. A community lecture will discuss the NDIS at 4pm on Tuesday in Geelong Clinical School Lecture Theatre, behind Kitchener House, at 285 Ryrie St, Geelong. Speakers will include NDIA chief executive officer David Bowen. Organisers said attendees should email Chris.Loughnan@dhs.vic.gov.au, indicating whether they needed disabled parking.

Health concern for workers on eve of Alcoa closure Geelong star ‘taped fights’

RETRENCHED Alcoa staff need to guard against depression and other mental health issues in coming months, Beyondblue has warned ahead of 520 workers losing their jobs at Point Henry next week. Beyondblue’s Tony McManus said they could find themselves struggling to find a routine or purpose after the “initial euphoria” of a large payout and a break from work wore off. He warned them against retreating into their “man caves” and losing important social ties with friends and others. The 520 workers losing their jobs next week are among 800 who will be out of work after Alcoa’s Point Henry Plant closes. Mr McManus, a mental health advocate and ambassador for Beyondblue, urged Alcoa workers - and 120 recently laid-off Ford workers - to treat their forced unemployment as “long-service leave” and a chance to rest, recover and regroup. Recent figures showed a five per cent rise in psychological distress levels across the region since 2008, in tandem

with job insecurity and manufacturing sector redundancies. Mr McManus suggests retrenchees assess their financial situation and whether they had to work as much as in the past. They could also consider helping community services with their mentoring skills, he said. “Volunteering is a very good way for them to keep themselves stimulated. “If they’re interested in refugees, they might like to do some work with Diversitat. They could maybe do some work with retirement homes, maybe with Big Brothers Big Sisters, helping at-risk youth. “The important thing is they don’t retreat to the proverbial man cave.” Mr McManus said maintaining social networks was crucial for laid-off workers and pointed to drop-in centres such as Geelong Museum of Motoring and Industry. “Mixing with people who’ve worked in the same circles can be important.” Mr McManus said anyone experiencing problems should talk with their partner or colleagues and, if necessary, their GP.

MORE bombshell claims about Geelong Hollywood star Portia de Rossi have emerged, claiming she secretly filmed fights with wife Ellen DeGeneres and threatened to release them to the media. The latest reports come after de Rossi spent May in a Malibu rehab centre for drugs and alcohol treatement following an “ugly fight” with DeGeneres. Last week De Rossi was revealed to have suffered cirrhosis of the liver and osteoporosis for more than a decade. Secret tapes have allegedly shown a controlling and demanding DeGeneres, who flew into a rage and checked de Rossi’s emails after discovering she had recorded the fights. Media heat has focussed sharply on de Rossi and DeGeneres in recent months amid cheating allegations, reports of serious differences between the two and speculation of a break-up. The Daily Mail, meanwhile, has reported the couple are repairing their marriage postrehab despite de Rossi’s ongoing battle with her “devils”. De Rossi and her family previously lived at Grovedale but have moved to Los Angeles.

Control link to mums’ weight A LACK of self-control could be why pregnant women eat too much and balloon beyond normal weight limits, according to Geelong psychology researchers. Deakin University psychology lecturer Emily Kothe said their world-first research would investigate why one in two pregnant women put on excess weight despite their motivation to eat well. The reason might be a lack of self-control over food choices during pregnancy, Dr Kothe said. “We know that we only achieve about 47 per cent of all the things we intend to do, partly due to lapses in self-control that make it hard to act on our intentions even when we’re motivated. “So we all have a self-control limit, which is more likely to be reached when we’re stressed or tired or have been paying a lot of

CONTROL: Dr Emily Kothe. attention to controlling our behaviour. “It’s possible that with all of the extra things that women have to deal with while pregnant, they simply reach the limit of their self-control when it comes to what they eat.”

The Deakin research is the first to investigate whether selfcontrol lapses might leave some women struggling to maintain healthy diets during pregnancy. “Through our study we want to find out why such a motivated group of women struggle so much when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet,” Dr Kothe said. “The results will help to identify women who are at particular risk of slipping into poor eating patterns during pregnancy and to make sure that those women get effective support to meet their own healthy eating goals. “We’re looking for women who are currently pregnant to take part in an online survey, so women from all around Australia can easily participate.” Dr Kothe said women could participate in the study at facebook.com/eating.for.two.study.

Software firm on track for farmers By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A GEELONG software company has developed an Australian-first paddock-to-plate GPS tracking system for agricultural products. AgLive marketing manager Stewart McConachy said the system could track livestock right through the supply chain. “We established GPS tracking provider Austracker in Geelong four years ago and two years ago we realised there was a gap in the livestock market. Farmers had a problem with maintaining

livestock identification, so we designed and patented a system for geo-fencing of properties and GPS tracking of livestock. “The system can trace fodder, the paddock the animal has grazed in, when the animal was vaccinated and any other quality assurance requirements. “Retailers can check the quality assurance bar code on a product and be able to trace it right back to the paddock.” Mr McConachy said farms larger than two hectares all had a property identification code

and all cattle were tagged with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). “The industry inevitably moving to used RFID tagging on all livestock such as sheep and goats to become part of the electronic tracking of the supply chain.” The system would also help protect against disease outbreaks, enabling quick tracking of affected animals and properties, he said. AgLive is one of seven IT start-ups participating in a Head Start accelerator pilot program.

Letters Fixing Labor’s NBN mess I WRITE to clarify some information about the NBN after a story in the 4 July Geelong Independent. The story stated that Geelong had previously been on the cusp of an NBN rollout. Unfortunately for parts of our region, this was not the case. Under the previous federal Labor government, parts of Corangamite were left in the dark. Labor’s NBN rollout schedule did not include areas like Highton, Belmont, Waurn Ponds and Grovedale. Labor failed to prioritise the areas most in need. Its NBN would have left up to 200,000 regional and rural households areas without a connection. The federal Coalition Government’s approach is very different. We have directed NBN Co to prioritise the areas that are most poorly serviced where feasible. I am lobbying extremely hard for Geelong’s southern suburbs to be included in our NBN rollout schedule, to be announced later this year, along with other priority locations including Bellbrae, Ocean Grove and Torquay. I have hosted a range of community meetings on this important issue and taken on the likes of Telstra in relation to a number of individual cases. The cost of Labor’s NBN was $29 billion more than Labor admitted and it was years behind schedule. Our government is working hard to get the NBN on track and to deliver fast broadband more quickly and cheaply. Sarah Henderson MP Member for Corangamite

Understand warrior’s mind IN RESPONSE to Bob Thompson’s letter in last week’s Independent, headlined ‘Wreath an insult’, I understand that many people, especially returned servicemen and women, have similar views but would like to record those of my late uncle. As a commando during World War II, he was among the first to arrive at Changi prison camp. He carried his childhood mate to the gates where his mate died in his arms, weighing four-and-a-half stone, or 28.6kg. Years later his son, my cousin, joined the navy and met a Japanese girl in Japan before marrying her in Australia with my uncle’s blessing. My uncle became a dearly beloved grandfather to

I wish more people had his attitude, which came from a deeper understanding of human nature, in all its complexities. Maybe if they did there would be less conflict in the world but we would need much more non-biased education. Pat Pickup Newtown

Keep site in public hands IN THE late 1990s City of Greater Geelong council didn’t think saving Ingamels Reserve, now named Ocean Grove Park, was important. Fifteen years on it’s the ex-netball courts reserve between Draper and Asbury Sts that council is prepared to sacrifice. Council wants to rezone it residential and offer it for sale. Council considers the land no longer required for public purposes and that ample open space is available in this part of the town. What bunkum! Council is ignoring long-term open-space needs

I WAS amazed to read that Sarah Henderson is still banging on about job losses from December 2012, before she was elected, as though they were a current issue (Independent, 18 July). As the same story and another on page nine indicated, her Coalition Government’s Renewable Energy Target review is a current threat to jobs and businesses in Geelong. Now that Ms Henderson is a member for this area and of the governing party, she should focus on helping Geelong with this problem, which is of her government’s making. In case she has not noticed, I also remind Ms Henderson that there is a bit of a problem regarding all the people locked up on a boat at some unknown location at her government’s pleasure. Ray Watson East Geelong and the ever-increasing housing density and redevelopment pressures transforming Ocean Grove. The adjacent Ocean Grove Memorial Reserve is a good football and cricket ground but has an active recreation and sports focus. Surely council doesn’t really believe that the small, triangular-shaped treed reserve at the busy intersection of Madely and Asbury Sts is an adequate or safe haven for a rapidly growing urban population. The 250-signature petition and numerous formal submissions opposing the proposed land sale and rezoning are living proof of significant community interest in keeping the netball courts site for possible future public uses. Has council forgotten that its own 2005 Bellarine Peninsula Recreation and Leisure Needs Study identified distinct gaps in Ocean Grove open space categories and generally poor connections between existing open space? Council’s new open space strategy and master plan for the memorial reserve are timely opportunities for council to re-engage with the community and seriously assess the value of retaining and reusing this special space. Kim McGough and Bernadette Peterson, Ocean Grove

Time for Cats to man-up WHY DOESN’T our great footy team wake up to the way many of the enemy teams play? When Geelong has the ball, the enemy mans up and pretty well to stop our flow-on game. But when the enemy has the ball, most Geelong players seem to leave their opposition free to create open space to kick long and effectively. It’s simple: Cats with the ball, split and create space; opposition with the ball, man up. Bob Appleton Grovedale

Left holding the baby SHAME on my fellow passengers on a 5pm train from Melbourne to Geelong on 13 July. The train was packed, mainly with footy followers from a VFL game. I was squeezed into the corridor between cars one and two with a clear vision down the length of car one, at the far end of which stood a young female with a baby in her arms. Did any of the sporting hunks offer a seat? Not on your Nelly, and stand she did, hanging on to her baby. Only when the train reached Lara and a fair number of passengers disembarked did she get a seat. It was not a good example of Aussies giving a fair go. Was it typical? I hope not. Hang your head in shame, fellas. E Hatton Highton

Bludgers’ sick scam AUSTRALIANS must surely be the sickest, most physically and mentally handicapped people on Earth. More than 800,000 citizens are now drawing the Disability Support Pension (DSP) - about seven per cent of the available workforce and more than the total number of registered unemployed. Most are too sick, it is claimed, to even contemplate working. Fair dinkum, the Federal Government should declare a state of social emergency. I smell a scam - at taxpayers’ expense. Morris driving out ‘Diemen’s’ AUSTRALIAN rock legend Russell Morris is bringing his Van Diemen’s Land tour to Geelong. Morris built a reputation as one of the country finest singer/ songwriters with five Australian top-10 singles in the ‘60s and ‘70s. After starting out in band Somebody’s Image, he found fame with seven-minute epic The Real Thing, which reached number one in Australia and the American capitals of Chicago, Houston and New York in 1969. Morris continued his success last year when he won his first ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots Album with Sharkmouth. He described music as “predominately blues with other diversions”. “It’s not entirely blues. It’s almost folky and sometimes on the rough edges of country but the ‘60s stuff is pure pop,” he said. Morris described the new Van Diemen’s Land album as covering historical Australian stories including Breaker Morant, the Sandakan railway, the Eureka Stockade and more. “Sharkmouth was about gangsters, back streets and city sort of stuff. I had in my mind I’d do a trilogy and the second album had

I allude to dates and names and intersperse with poetry. “You have to make sure you get the basic facts right, otherwise you’ll be at some gig and a guy with a flowing beard will come up and correct you. Morris hoped his new songs would encourage listeners to carry out their own research.

“It’s a selfish way for getting people to read about Australian history,” he laughed. Morris struggled to nominate his favourite song on the new album. “They’re like children – you love them all the same. They’re all close to you because you’ve put them down and committed to them. “You have to be able to live with them and like them. Morris said the audience in Geelong, which he considered one of his “main stages,” could expect a musical journey. “It’s also a bit of a historical journey, a bit of fun. People will get their money’s worth.” Morris said his tour set lists covered a “combination of the last two big albums and maybe a bit of the ‘60s stuff.” He was particularly excited about his support act for Geelong, rising Australian blues artist John McNamara. “He’s a really talented guy. He is going to be a big star,” Morris enthused. “I wanted to hit him on the head with a hammer, he’s just too good. I approached him and asked him to play at my concert, so he’s coming to Geelong with me, which is great.” Morris plays The Wool Exchange on 9 August.

CHILLI, nutmeg, coriander, saffron, cinnamon…. The rich scent of spice greets all visitors at Ryrie’s St’s new Darbar Indian Restaurant. Head chef and owner Mandeep Singh says authentic Indian flavours are his restaurant’s point of difference. Mandeep previously worked as a chef at one of Geelong’s best-known Indian restaurants for seven years before opening his own venue. “The team here have been working in this industry for a long time,” he says.

Darbar’s team of five also offer takeaway home deliveries. A vegetarian curry is $10 and meat curries are $12.30. Darbar Indian Restaurant is open for lunch 12pm to 2pm Wednesdays to Saturdays and for dinner 5pm to 10pm seven days a week at 93-95 Ryrie St, Geelong, phone 5221 5050 or visit darbarindianrestaurant.com.au.

The Wool Exchange is the perfect venue for casual dining, functions and the best in Australian live music, such as rocker Dan Sultan.

Fine food and fun at Wooly OPULENT weddings, fine dining at café prices, high tea and leading musicians are just a few of the attractions at The Wool Exchange. Complex manager Sean Street is offering a popular “buy one get one free” lunch special every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday again this month. One of Geelong’s finest chefs, Sean looks to the 1927 building for inspira-

tion to create a culinary experience that reflects its grandeur. The fully-restored windows bathe the restaurant in natural light, creating an ideal atmosphere for almost any occasion. Custom menus are created for different events. Packages are available for wedding receptions, parties, corporate events, birthdays and more.

The Wool Exchange has children’s and vegetarian menus, as well as coffee served by experienced baristas. Home-made cakes, pastries, slices and biscuits are baked fresh daily and available in-house or take-away. High tea is served 2.30pm Fridays as a perfect way to catch up with friends while enjoying delicious home-made sandwiches, fresh scones, lamingtons,

hedgehog and other baked treats. Function packages for 20 to 600 guests can be arranged to suit any budget. With a long, rich history in Geelong, The Wool Exchange is renowned for its food and service. The Wool Exchange hosts some of Geelong’s best entertainment. AGED 34 and a single mum of four children between the ages of two and 16, Lisa Kimpton enjoys interacting with people and wanted to take on a more caring role in her work. She heard about Karingal Training’s Certificate II in Community Services early this year and thought it would be the ideal career for her. Feeling inspired through the course, Lisa successfully applied for a 12-month traineeship position with City Of Greater Geelong, helping the elderly and people with a disability. The traineeship offers 15 to 20 hours of paid work a week and continued education in the community services sector. “When I leave their home I know my clients appreciate me being there, even if it’s just for a chat,” Lisa says. “I feel like I have a sense of purpose by contributing and helping people each day - it’s a wonderful feeling.” Certificate II in Community Services provides a nationally recognised, industry-accepted entry-level qualification. The certificate provides participants with the perfect introduction to industry, with modules focussing on supporting community service organisations and resources and working with people with a disability or mental illness and disadvantaged youth. “The course is particularly suited to those looking to work or

IndyMotor Trail’s turn for the better By DEREK OGDEN THE Nissan X-Trail is a mid-size SUV that has become one of the Japanese maker’s most successful models in Australia - about 140,000 have been sold since 2001. Starting life as a compact SUV with leanings towards the bland, the X-Trail has morphed into a mid-size five-seat crossover vehicle incorporating innovative technology and exceptional comfort with the option of seven seats. Designers have given the SUV a modern street presence by taking cues from the highly successful crossovers Qashqai, Juke and Murano to create a capable, all-weather, family wagon. Available in two-wheel and fourwheel drive variants, with the choice of two petrol engines - 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre - the Nissan X-Trail comes to market starting at a competitively priced $27,990 with drive-away for about $31,155. Our test vehicle was the entry-level 2.0 ST six-speed manual. Nissan says turbo-diesel variants are just around the corner. The X-Trail continues to bulk up with the latest model adding five millimetres in length, 30mm width, 10mm height and 75mm wheelbase. Ground clearance, at 210mm, has been lowered by 5mm, moving it away from the off-road scene, though a lot of competitors have less clearance than that of the Nissan. The X-Trail wagon stands tall on 17-inch alloy wheels, high wheel

arches adding to the high-and-mighty character. Nissan signature features include ‘boomerang’ rear lights, structured headlights with LED daytime running lamps and the characteristic D-pillar shape. Inside, the ST is a mix of premium features including chrome, geometric metallic and piano black finishes. The ST has seating for up to five adults - a seven-seat option is available in the upper spec ST-L and Ti models which leave room for Nissan’s unique Divide-N-Hide flexible cargo storage system which comes up with 18 ways to cart stuff. Two luggage boards allow the area to be split into upper and lower areas in a single-handed move. In top position, the board holds up to 10kg of cargo; in low, maximum load is 75kg. Front seats provide continuous support from pelvis to chest, helping to reduce muscular and spinal loads to improve blood flow, reducing fatigue over long periods. Separating the seats is a storage box that is big enough to take an iPad or 10-inch tablet. Rear side doors swing out wide (80 degrees) for easy access to the seats and rear cargo space, while the tailgate in the Ti can be automatically opened by a hand swipe of an infra-red sensor above the number plate. Nissan X-Trail is offered with either a 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and with either twowheel or four-wheel drive. The 2.0-litre engine, rated at

106kW of power at 6000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4400 revs, is mated with a six-speed manual transmission and is found in the entry-level X-Trail ST only. Making use of Nissan’s DIG (Direct Injection Gasoline) technology and twin variable timing control, the combination is designed to deliver fuel economy and solid usable torque. Electric power steering also plays a part in the former, reining in petrol use by avoiding the need for an enginedriven hydraulic pump. Nissan claims fuel consumption of 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle with 190 grams of carbon dioxide emitted per kilometre. Our test X-Trail ST manual came up with a best figure of 7.1 litres per 100km; the worst was north of 10 litres per 100km. On the safety front, the new XTrail’s monocoque body design and zone construction with structural front and rear crumple zones is augmented by four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, ABS anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. MP3, USB, AUX, Bluetooth telephony, NissanConnect smartphone connectivity follow while every XTrail has a reversing camera with guidelines projecting a 130 degree horizontal view on a colour screen on the central dashboard. Nissan’s Advanced Drive Assist Display use a five-inch LCD screen

between the tachometer and speedometer. Steering wheel-mounted controls scrolls through trip, fuel and navigation details. The 2.0-litre engine deals with most driving situations thanks to the ST’s slick shifting six-speed manual gearbox. When up to speed the X-Trail has little tendency for body roll, even when being punted through fast bends. Here Nissan can be thanked for its Active Ride Control which monitors the road surface for unevenness, which could upset the pitch of the body, and shifts suspension damping to compensate. Grip in similar situations is optimised by Nissan’s Active Trace Control, which applies braking force to each wheel where necessary. On-board sensors check speed, steering angle, throttle opening and braking effort and brakes wheels as required to reduce understeer, particularly on slippery surfaces. Model range X-Trail ST 2.0L Manual 2WD $27,990 (Est. driveaway, $31,155); X-Trail ST 2.5L Xtronic 2WD $30,490 ($33,727); X-Trail ST 2.5L Xtronic - Seven Seat 2WD $31,580 ($34,853); X-Trail ST-L 2.5L Xtronic 2WD $36,190 ($39,601); X-Trail ST-L 2.5L Xtronic - Seven Seat 2WD $37,190 ($40,631); X-Trail ST 2.5L Xtronic 4WD $33,980 ($37,325); X-Trail ST-L 2.5L Xtronic 4WD $39,080 ($42,575); X-Trail Ti 2.5L Xtronic 4WD $44,680 ($48,343).

TOP-FLIGHT factory training in the US and Sydney has ensured German Automotive technicians are up with the latest vehicle technology advances. With the specialised week-long training in Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes, German Automotive staff are now keen to put their new-found knowledge to work. German Automotive’s Ben Buckle says remaining abreast of the newest technology utilised in automotive manufacture is crucial to motor technicians working on Germany’s finest brands. “You cannot expect to work on top German cars unless you are fully factory trained,” Ben explains. “We consider it crucial to really know our stuff so we can work on our customer’s car to the best of our ability.” Ben says technology is similar across marques but the number of new models being released means technicians needed the extra training. “This allows our staff to use their knowledge and experience and extend that to the complete range of Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes models.” Ben says the complete factory training matches staff knowledge with the top diagnostic equipment used by German Automotive. “It just means that we can be certain that we will diagnose every car correctly when it’s booked in for a service.” Not only can clients book a service online at germanautomotive.com.au, they also have access to a courtesy car. German Automotive enables Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes owners to access a full range of automotive needs without jeopardising their new car warranty. MIKE HANNEYSEE CAR SALES 139 FYANS ST SOUTH GEELONG PHONE: 03 5221 8888 LMCT: 900 www.hanneyseecarsales.com.au

By PETER ANDERSON WHAT do you do if your archrival launches a two-door sports coupe with some cracking new engines and transmissions? If you’re Audi and your rival is the BMW 4 Series, there isn’t a lot you have to do - because the A5 is still one of the finest-looking cars on the road. And looks is what the Audi A5 S line Competition is all about. Despite the name, there’s no fire-breathing engine under the bonnet, no extra mechanical mods to make it feel racier. The S line Competition is the third in a line of limited editions. For $83,300 - a tick under 10 grand more than a standard A5 coupe with the same drivetrain - you get the S line mods which lower the suspension and adds things like aluminium kickplates and interior restraint in the form of embossed logos. Powered by the same 2.0-litre petrol TFSI engine as the standard car, you can choose between the six-speed manual or sevenspeed DSG automatic driving all four wheels. A5s already have the specs to match the price. Included is threezone climate control, leather and perforated Alcantara trim, keyless entry and start, park assist, MMI with sat-nav and 10-speaker stereo, cruise control, power windows, mirrors and Xenon driving lights with LED daytime running lights. The Competition’s headline mods are those lovely, titaniumfinished 20-inch alloy wheels. Already a head-turner, the wheels with the gloss black sill

3 GEELONG’S ONLY INDEPENDENT RACV APPROVED USED CAR DEALER CAR OF THE WEEK LOOKS: Audi’s coupe is made even prettier by Competition mods. extensions, rear diffuser and rear wing add a little bit of studied aggro to the clean, garrotte-wire sharp lines. Six airbags, ABS, brake force distribution, traction and stability control all add up to the notunexpected five-star ANCAP rating. Quattro all-wheel drive and reversing camera add to the package. The seven-inch MMI screen sits high up in the dash cowling while the MMI rotary dial and separate volume knob live in the console. Audi’s 2.0-litre TFSI knocks out 165 kW of power and 380 Nm of torque. It’s a smooth engine and incredibly quiet, even when smacking the tacho needle against the redline. The six-speed manual has a light clutch and an easy, short throw which perfectly matches how low you sit. Over some very patchy surfaces, the huge 20-inch wheels shod with what are normally very noisy Continental tyres barely

make a peep and you don’t feel much either, either through the wheel or the seat of your pants. Foot to the floor Audi A5 is entirely predictable. Gigantic grip allied with super power delivery and slightly slow but light steering means you can sweep through even tight bends at huge speeds before very gentle understeer sets in. With a name like Competition, a bit more fire in the belly in the form of a loudmouth exhaust or a noisier intake - something would be in order. SUMMING UP (3.5/5) The Audi A5 coupe is an enduringly pretty car and is ageing indecently well. Throw in the genuine limited edition nature of the Competition and ignore that it’s not a strippedout quick special, the car is certainly one that will make its owners smile. Any A5 is a good A5, even in basic 2.0 TDI form, so a quick one with a manual gearbox just means it’s extra-good.

IndySport Scott’s message bank for Cats By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE messages from Geelong coach Chris Scott have been consistent all season, which is more than can be said for his players. As the Cats enjoy a week’s break, it’s worth reviewing Scott’s messages to see what the remaining five games may hold. Message one: it’s a long season. Scott has maintained all along that the season will ebb and flow and anything can happen. Case in point: Port Adelaide, North Melbourne and Fremantle, each of which has dropped off unexpectedly and infliced significant damage on their campaigns.

By doing little else than enough to win, Geelong has found itself in either second or third place, depending on whether Hawthorn knocks off the Swans in the second half of this split round. A top-two finish will also remove the travelling bugbear, earning Geelong a Victorian final first up. The real test will come over the next two weeks when the Cats take on the Kangaroos and Dockers, ironically two of the sides that have dipped recently. The opportunity is staring Geelong in its cat-like face: win those and regenerate the old never-write-off-the-Cats fear among the remaining opposition. Message two: the glass is half full.

When they’ve been good, they’ve been very good, making the bad patches look all the more terrible. But Scott has accentuated the positive, offering his charges a saucer of milk rather than booting them out of the cat flap into the cold. The encouraging approach is aimed more at the young players still getting games under their belt. It’s a delicate psychological balance. After all, players do need a rev up now and again, as brother Brad was reminded by his own Kangaroos players this week. But playing the game the Geelong way and trusting in the culture to keep players on the right track has certainly

reaped rewards over the last seven years, so there’s no point in throwing it out now. Message three: stay injury-free Scott doesn’t subscribe to the soldier out = soldier in philosophy. He knows that his best players are there for a reason and losing one generally weakens the team. So the medical room has focussed on getting as many of the best players as possible ready for the business end of the season. He has reiterated time and again the club’s cautious approach to injuries and rehabilitation to ensure players are cherry ripe and then given time to get back up to speed before the crunch comes.

The break this week will stand that approach in good stead, allowing little niggles and sore spots to be overcome. Message four: longevity Scott is not interested in selling out next year and the year after – St Kilda style - for the sake of this season. That means players, and the sub-50 gamers in particular, know they have long-term as well as short-term goals, offering greater perspective, and taking some of the immediate pressure off. It’s a wise move in the context of the weekly pressure to perform that pervades football clubs.

SWOOP: Matthew Townley in action for the Warriors.

Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC

Warriors face Kingston as winning streak continues By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors will seek to continue its rich vein of form against Kingston in National Premier League’s first division this weekend after a 5-2 away win over fancied Bulleen Lions. The Warriors lost 2-0 to Kingston last time they met, which marked the beginning of a three-week losing streak. But since then the Warriors have picked up 19 points compared to Kingston’s seven. Undefeated for six weeks, the Warriors now sit just outside promotion places.

Notable differences in North Geelong’s play have been the conversion of opportunities, players’ work-rate without the ball and their pace when turning defence into attack. The match against Bulleen started in a blaze of end-to-end action during which the home side was the greater threat. However, Warriors keeper Daniel Zilic was up to the challenge and thwarted any attempt. North Geelong opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Matthew Townley drifted the perfect ball for Mark Paleka to run onto at the back post and head home. Two minutes later Michael Grgic slotted another after the Bulleen de-

fence dealt poorly with a corner. In the 40th minute and after some confusion in the Warriors box, Lions midfielder Lewis Waddell pounced to nudge the ball past Zilic after calls for a foul by the North Geelong defence. The Warriors lifted the tempo after half-time, reaping rewards five minutes in when Paleka stormed toward the back post to drive his shot on target for 3-1. The onslaught continued on 65 minutes when Robert Zadworny’s ever-present charge at goal resulted in a foul on the edge of the box. Townley stepped up and drilled it hard and low for the Warriors’ fourth of the match Both sides then made a series of

changes and the match settled into a calmer rhythm but the scoring continued. On 90 minutes Jackson Davis nestled a delightful through-ball behind the Lions’ defence for Juso Julardzija to place past the keeper, notching up a memorable away win. A late injury-time free kick to Bulleen gave its score a little respect but the damage was done. Warriors boss Micky Colina heaped praise on his charges’ effort and work-rate. “The commitment has been fantastic and we continue to work at being a better and more complete team,” he said.

WURDEE Boluc Reservoir produced for local anglers last weekend. Wayne Trewin cast a frog pattern Tassie Devil around the shallow edges in calm conditions on Saturday afternoon to land a well-conditioned brown trout. Michael Evans also put in a few hours at the reservoir, catching redfin to 45cm on Fish Arrow soft plastics. Further down the road, Lake Purrumbete produced brown and rainbow trout reaching 2kg on shallow-diving hard-body lures cast over the vast weed beds. Daiwa Double Clutches, Rapala F-7s and Pins Minnows accounted for the most fish, with colours such as black and gold or Spotted Dog working well. Lake Bullen Merri continued to produce Chinook salmon to 1.8kg for anglers fishing deep with bait and lure. The odd rainbow trout to 2kg was also taken while flat-line trolling pink number 55 Tassie Devils. Anglers caught lots of hard-fighting carp in the Barwon River around Queen’s Park. Although these fish don’t have the best reputation they certainly make up for it in the fight. Some of the fish were up to 8kg. Upcountry, Lake Toolondo continued producing rainbow and brown trout to 2kg on hard-body lures cast among the trees. Floating weed has made trolling the lake difficult. Anglers caught squid in calm conditions on Saturday and Sunday. The area of Hermsley Rd, near Clifton Springs, hosted larger squid at day break. Other anglers fishing nearby on the Clifton Springs channel edges caught gummy shark to 8kg on fresh squid baits. Geelong’s waterfront continued producing pinkies, with casting soft plastics still the best method. The spoil grounds at Stingaree Bay were also worth fishing for snapper and flathead, with the odd bigger fish taken. Anglers fishing Swan Bay in the evening caught gummy sharks to 10kg on pilchards and fresh squid, although they had to pick through a lot of unwanted species. Australian salmon of 1.5kg were taken on 25g lures at Bancoora’s surf beach. Casting distance was the key to success, along with covering plenty of ground This weekend should be idea for spinning surf beaches between Barwon Heads and Apollo Bay if the weather holds out. Boaties should try searching for winter snapper around the Geelong inner-harbour or over the spoil grounds. Freshwater enthusiasts should find Lake Purrumbete ideal for trolling or casting around the weed banks for monster brown trout. Send reports and photos to info@raylongtackle.com. au or visit Chris at Fishing World Geelong, 105 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights, or go to its Facebook page.
