WHYI

GIVE FOR US October 28, 2018 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary While it may seem counter to the selflessness Jesus aspires us to attain, why we give begins with our own story. Just as people asked Jesus for help, and he responded with compassion, why we give may begin with us - for the betterment of our loved ones, our families and friends, and ourselves. Be encouraged! Jesus loves us and meets us in our places of need.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Fantasia in F Giovanni Battista Polleri, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP We come before God as equal in God’s sight. God knows us thoroughly and loves us completely. None of us is perfect and without blemish. Yet God has called us God’s children and asked us to be compassionate and responsible in our caring and witness. We are called to joyful obedience in God’s realm. Thanks be to God who trusts us and pours God’s abundant love on us. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Come, Thou Almighty King 61 | Italian Hymn *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him all creatures, here below; praise him above, ye heavenly hosts; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen. +In this instance, catholic means universal.

The one who sows a small number of seeds will also reap a small crop, and the one who sows a generous amount of seeds will also reap a generous crop. Everyone should give whatever they have decided in their heart. They shouldn’t give with hesitation or because of pressure. II Corinthians 9:6,7a

Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure, until with thee I will one will, to do and to endure. God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. II Corinthians 9:7b – 9

Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine, till all this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine. The one who supplies seed for planting and bread for eating will supply and multiply your seed and will increase your crop, which is righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous in every way. Such generosity produces thanksgiving to God through us. II Corinthians 9:10,11

Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity. PASTORAL PRAYER AND LORD’S PRAYER CHORAL RESPONSE

OFFERTORY | Let All Men Praise the Lord Felix Mendelssohn, composer | Chancel Choir Let all men praise the Lord, in worship lowly bending, on his most holy word; redeemed from woe depending, he gracious is, and just, from childhood us doth lead, on him we place our trust, and hope in time of need. Glory and praise to God the Father, Son, be given, and to the Holy Ghost, on high enthroned in heaven. Praise to the three-one God, with powerful arm and strong, he changeth night to day, praise him with grateful song.

Break The

Silence Break the Silence Sunday | Today | We should not accept a world where people don’t feel safe in their own homes. One in four women are victims of domestic violence. We’re partnering with 90.9 KCBI, Genesis Women’s Shelter and other Dallas-Fort Worth area churches to shed light on this issue and help people break free of abusive situations to lead independent and safe lives. St. Andrew is a safe place and our desire is to help those in need. If you or someone you know is suffering from domestic violence, or if you want to learn more about how you can help, contact one of our pastors or Genesis Women’s Shelter. genesisshelter.org standrewumc.org/News/BreakTheSilence 4
