ATTRACTIONS Summer Program Guide 2016

Volume XXXVIII, No. 3

The love for our Early Childhood Center spans generations— just look at the Katz family! Andrew Katz attended the ECC in the late 70s, before the ECC Wing was added. He fondly remembers napping in Room 109 and playing in the gym. Today, his daughter Maya, 7, is also an ECC alumnus, and his daughter Elsa, 2.5, is enrolled in the program. Their story makes one thing clear: the impact of our ECC lasts a lifetime. For information on current openings, see page 15.

jewish holidays YOM HASHOAH | MAY 5 Yom Hashoah, known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, occurs on the 27th of Nisan each year. Shoah, which means ‘catastrophe’ or ‘utter destruction’ in Hebrew, refers to the atrocities that were committed against millions of people during World War II. On this day, we commemorate the lives and heroism of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust between 1933 and 1945.

YOM HAZIKARON | MAY 11 On this Memorial Day, we commemorate the soldiers who have fallen fighting for Israel’s independence and defending its security and victims of terrorism. The most noticeable feature of the day is the sound of a siren that is heard throughout the country twice, during which the entire nation observes a two-minute standstill of all traffic and daily activities. Falling the day before Israel Independence Day, this day of solemn commemoration is then followed by joyous celebration and song.

YOM HA’ATZMAUT | MAY 12 Yom Ha’atzmaut is a joyful holiday commemorating the signing of the Israeli Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948. David Ben Gurion, the nation’s first Prime Minister, announced the creation of the State of Israel on that day, the 5th of Iyar. Yom Ha’atzmaut is celebrated both in Israel and in Jewish communities throughout the world. Israelis celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut with both official ceremonies and casual picnics and neighborhood gatherings. In the U.S., community-wide events are a way to express solidarity with Israel by having a celebration filled with Israeli food, music and culture.

YOM YERUSHALAYIM | JUNE 5 Also known as Jerusalem Day, this day commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of Israeli control over Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in June 1967. It is marked by state ceremonies, memorial services for soldiers who died in the battle, and parades.

LAG B’OMER | MAY 26 This festive outdoor holiday is celebrated on the 33rd day of the “Omer” (a measure of barley) which is the period between Passover and Shavuot. Every night from the second night of Passover to the night before Shavuot, we recite a blessing and state the count of the Omer in both weeks and days. The counting is intended to remind us of the link between Passover, which commemorates the Exodus, and Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Torah.

SHAVUOT | JUNE 12 – 13 Shavuot, which means the “Festival of Weeks,” occurs seven weeks after Passover. It is a threefold celebration that commemorates the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, the harvesting of wheat in the land of Israel, and the ripening of the first fruits in Jerusalem. On Passover the Jews were freed from slavery; on Shavuot they were made into free people by receiving the Ten Commandments. Traditional foods for this holiday include cheese blintzes, cheesecake, honey cake and other dairy dishes reminding us that the land of Israel is “flowing with milk and honey.” Reform Jews and Jews living in Israel observe the holiday for one day, while Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate the holiday for two days.

TISHA B’AV | AUGUST 14 An important fast day in the Jewish calendar is Tisha B’Av, the 9th day of the month of Av. On that day in the year 586 BCE, the Babylonians, led by King Nebuchadnezzar, besieged the Temple in Jerusalem and burned it to the ground. On that same day 656 years later (70 CE), the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans. Like Yom Kippur, fasting on Tisha B’Av begins on the evening of the night before the day itself and ends at nightfall 25 hours later. For information on Jewish holiday community events, please see page 5.

As a boy growing up in Poland, Grosnacht and his brothers would line up six chairs to make a pretend train to ride. Years later, Grosnacht re-created that scene in a picture, drawing himself seated in the front chair, the other five empty, as he is the only member of his family to have survived the Holocaust. For more information, contact Marley Richman. The Roy Applebaum Memorial Award is presented each year as a symbol of outstanding dedication to our Youth Basketball Program to someone who inspires children while teaching the fundamentals of basketball, just as Roy Applebaum did many years ago. The JCC is proud to present Coach Hart Johnson, who has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to our league and players, with this year’s award. Hart has played basketball at the J since he was in kindergarten. Today, he coaches his two children in our Youth Basketball Leagues. “It’s truly an honor to receive this award and it’s a true joy to be part of this wonderful youth basketball program at the JCC,” he said. Congratulations, Hart! We also extend heartfelt thanks to all of our volunteer Youth League basketball coaches who generously gave their time and talent to this year’s season.
