I thought it was very well written, not overstated but covered all the facts well. Not to mention I agree with the whole content 100%. the newsletter. S&S Off Road Magazine has been so good to us in the past and has printed many articles I have written, so I had the idea to embed the newsletter in their magazine. Sherri told me that many years ago, when SDORC was just getting going, their newsletter was embedded in S&S Off Road then known as San Diego Off Roader. We will be reporting on the activities of SDORC as well as discussing land use topics of interest to off-roaders. Much of the land use information will center around off-roading in San Diego and Imperial Counties. We won’t be ignoring action further north and elsewhere though. We will also cover legislation that can hurt or help us. Currently there is litigation running in Ocotillo Wells and

the Imperial Sand Dunes (Glamis) and there is other administrative action running in the Cleveland National Forest and Ocotillo Wells that will affect us. There is federal legislation running that could greatly affect how SXS vehicles are built. In two years, two very significant pieces of off-road legislation will come up for re-authorization and will need to be followed closely. There is the proposed listing of the flat tailed horned lizard. After many years of administrative work by the BLM as well as legal action by environmental groups, the Western Mojave area of the California Desert District (WEMO) may soon get an up-todate management plan. There are less glamorous, but still important activities SDORC does, like doing maintenance on the kids track at Corral Canyon, doing highway clean-ups on our section of I-8 and putting on events like our Annual Lost Lizard Fun Run. So look forward to articles from SDORC in the future. Next month we will outline the Ocotillo Wells lawsuit, legal action against the Imperial Sand Dunes

Recreational Area Management Plan and discuss the flat tailed horned lizard. For more information on the San Diego Off Road Coalition or to become a member please visit www.sdorc.org Thank you Sherri and Steve for allowing us to share your great publication. Ed Stovin President, SDORC

properly they can KILL YOU. A small crack in the heat exchanger can go unnoticed so it is important to have a Authorized Service Tech check it out!

This also includes a plugged exhaust port. Symptoms: burning eyes, dry throat, headache, breathing difficulty and nausea Tip #21 Replacing 14x14 Vent Lids or Escape Hatches When replacing vent lids remove the old one. This is easily done. It is important to know which hinge you have and there are several types. There is no such thing as STANDARD vent Lids, so when you go in search of a replacement vent lid take what’s left of the lid and hinge with you or take a picture of the hinge. This will save you and your parts man a lot of frustration. P.S. If you walk into a parts store without these items and say “I need a standard vent lid for a 2004 Fleetwood or Winnebago” you will just get a deer-inthe-headlights look from the parts guy with an “Okaaaaaay” followed by “What hinge?” Not every RV manufacturer uses the same vents on their coaches. Tip #22 Toilet Chemicals There are two types of toilet chemicals: Formaldehyde and Non- Formaldehyde. So when you pick one that works for you stick with it. Formaldehyde type chemicals are usually banned in some RV parks and State Parks with septic tank systems because it will kill the bacteria and destroy leech fields. But I will say that formaldehyde chemicals do a better job of breaking down waste in hot or cold weather! Bacteria type chemicals work well in warm environments. Either way choose which one works for you. Tip #23 Electrical Cords 110 Volt 30 or 50 Amp This is one of the most abused items and the most used. Even though they have factory sealed ends they will eventually fall prey to physical abuse. Check your plug on a regular basis, look for signs of arcing between the spades. Also look for black streaks or burn marks. Shorting or high amp draw will cause bluish deposits at the base of the spades. Plugging and unplugging causes the insulation around the spades to separate and allows moisture to enter. This will cause a short within the plug itself. Caution: Stay on top of things as high amp draws and shorts in this area can destroy your converter or cause a major fire and cost you big time money. NOTE: Keeping the spades coated with dielectric grease will help prevent most of these problems. If you burn out a plug

they can be replaced with after market plug replacement ends. Avoid splicing pigtails, just replace the plug ends. Tip #24 Interior & Exterior Bulbs Always bring a sample bulb with you, never assume everything is standard. Interior lights use several different bulbs from incandescent to fluorescent. They come in wedge, spade, and snap-in. This includes exterior lighting. Fluorescent bulbs will start turning black on the ends. Don’t ignore this, replace them right away as this will cause a higher amp draw and burn out the ballast. Then you will spend a lot more money on a new light. Use dielectric grease in the bulb sockets. Tip #25 Replacing Parts The word “standard” does not apply here, there are thousands of parts by hundreds of manufacturers. Don’t assume that your parts are made by the maker of your RV because they are not! The RV manufacturer makes and designs the coach or trailer only, they will put out bids to small parts manufacturers to supply them with the lights, fixtures, plumbing parts, appliances and accessories. Always bring samples or pictures along with make and model number of each item. This will save you a lot of frustration, money and time. Now for the rest of the story? There are certain RV manufacturers that have what we call O.E.M parts and they will not be carried by the majority of RV parts stores, They have to be ordered or purchased thru the RV Dealership because the RV manufacturer has exclusive rights to individual parts and will only sell parts to the RV parts store or service department that handles their warranty or sells their units. The good news is that a certain part may be available as an after market product which is not O.E.M but looks identical and is much cheaper too.

Lower Back Pain

H

ello Off Roaders! I just got back from a long drive up the I-5 to Yuba City/Marysville and back. A little 1200 mile round trip jaunt from San Diego. There was an MX race up there that featured a few all Jawa/CZ Vintage bike classes. It was a memorial race held for a buddy, Don Matthews, who died two years ago of the flu/pneumonia at age 58. Donnie was a huge Jawa/CZ Vintage MX guy. It was a four day trip and a few miles on the road. It is never the MX racing that scares me but I have to admit that many a person texting, on the phone, swerving in and out of lanes, not paying attention to the side wind the big trucks had to deal with, does get my attention and worries me more than anything else. Please do not text and drive. You are worse then a drunk if you do. At least the drunks on the road are trying to pay attention. Those that text while driving don’t even know where they are for seconds at a time. They are looking down, not at the road, for that all important call they just cannot miss. With the eight to nine hours each way from San Diego, the drive is a good one. Even with a great seat and lower back support, it can take a toll on your back and neck. I got a chiropractic adjustment to my back and neck before I left and I did just fine. I also got one from another DC ( Doctor of Chiropractic) when I got back. I had two open practices and four motos plus all the loading, unloading of the trailer, bikes and motorhome. So, taking my own medicine was the correct thing to do. I kept my spine in line and balanced with those treatments. Folks should consider getting the back and neck tuned up before a long drive and after. They make sure the truck is ready to go, check the tires, the oil, the radiator/fluid levels before taking off. So why not make sure your body is tuned up for that long drive? Think you might be in the right place if the doctors are taking their own medicine? I do! Lower back pain is the #1 cause of disability in the world. I hear folks tell me all the time “Doc, I was just picking up a pencil off the floor, lifting a pillow off the bed, brushing my teeth over the sink, etc, etc and

14 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - JUNE 2015 - www.SS-OffRoadMagazine.com

then suddenly my back went out and I was on the floor with extreme lower back pain!” Well folks, do you think picking up a pencil or brushing your teeth would have caused such an issue? Nope. It was a “last straw” type of deal nearly 100% of the time. Total neglect of proper lower back and hip alignment for years set the stage. Maybe an old injury just flared up. Maybe an old disc injury reared it’s ugly head. But, most of the time, it is pure neglect. See, most people just do not understand the value of regular chiropractic care, like one time a month, as they would getting their teeth cleaned about two times a year. By the way, the teeth are replaceable, the spine is not. Yet, folks will wait till their back hurts to see a DC. To them, I say “Then you should wait till your teeth hurt to see a dentist!” After 10 or 20 years of only going to a dentist when your teeth hurt, let me know how that goes for you? See, that is how we know the toothbrush was invented in Arkansas, otherwise, it would have been called the “teethbrush” instead of the “toothbrush.” Ha! And, they do not make new spines or the precious nerves that run through it. I can only tell folks what I know after 31 years as a DC. It is a strange thing to them, this idea of maintenance for their backs and necks, getting a regular back and neck tune-up, alignment, adjustment. Then I have the folks with lower back pain, sometimes pain down the leg, Sciatica. They wait till the day before they are driving back to Arkansas from San Diego, to get their back worked on. Some kind of planning in advance I guess? Misalignment and/or out of balance of moving parts causes early wear and tear whether it is the tires on the truck or the discs and vertebrae of the spine. Over time, the tires or your discs get thin, weak and then boom, the tire that was near bald goes flat on that tiny tack and that disc goes pop from picking that pencil off the floor. Yet, it is all a mystery to most, even many an MD out there. I never could understand why the medical profession at large had such a tough time understanding that just maybe, the alignment and balance, mobility of the human spine might be important to one’s health and well being. Go figure! Dr. Gary De Forest is a San Diego based DC for over 30 years. He can be reached at his office in Old Town at 619 2912462 or deforest192@yahoo.com . He is always happy to speak with you about any health issue.

n April 11, 2015 at the San Diego Boys & Girls Club in Encanto previously incarcerated students of The Urban Ministry Institute along with graduates from the Training Center of San Diego, a residential drug and alcohol treatment center participated in a community outreach in southeast San Diego. The event was organized by pro-skateboard champion, Dennis Martinez and presented by the San Diego Police Department Southeastern Division. The Urban Ministry Institute students and Training Center graduates were responsible for every aspect of the outreach, from setting up the numerous vendors, sport exhibitions, and music stages, to crowd control and the sound system. Richard Leon, Raymond Langley, Lester Fontenette and Christopher Bonds are all previously incarcerated students who are now partnered with the Training Center to reach the neighborhoods of San Diego. The crowd was treated to a variety of different athletic feats and spectacles -- from skate boarding demonstrations, car hopping contests, BMX exhibitions, freestyle motocross, arm wrestling, a low rider car show, live graffiti demonstrations, rock climbing, and much more. The San Diego Police Department provided vintage police cars, SWAT Team equipment displays, and the Chief of Police, Shelley Zimmerman, joined in the activities. Contests to win autographed sports memorabilia kept the crowd of over 2,500 people entertained and helped make the event a success. Testimonies of successfully overcoming addictions and crime through accepting Christ as Lord and Savior, Christian Hip Hop, and a Christian Irish music group sent the crowd away with a message of hope for their future and the future of their community. Information gathered in part from www.servingcalifornia.org/4th_annual_x_fest. For information about the Training Center visit www.sdtrainingcenter.org E

Cory Hemphill (right) helping stepson Kyler with his race bike. Cory started racing off road in Southern California at the age of 10. It has always been his passion and something he thought he would do forever. Unfortunately in November of 2014 Cory had two discs in his back burst and press against his spinal cord. Cory underwent a seven hour spine surgery in February 2015. Cory was told he will not be able to race again as the chance of paralysis is too high. As much as it hurts him not to, Cory has not missed one race for the rest of us in the family. He has supported us every step of the way. Cory helps us prep if he is able, he cheers us on and has been by our sides encouraging us. For many it would be easier to not be around racing, the constant reminder of what he can’t do. We are so proud of Cory and his support not only for us as a family but all of the other kids he helps and cheers on at the races as well. He is an inspiration to many. Thank you Cory! — Crystal Hemphill, Phoenix AZ

son and NORRA President Mike Pearlman. “Jim Garner was always happy, he never had a mad look on his face. The camera really loved him too. NORRA is proud to run the '2015 Mexican 1000 James Garner Memorial Rally' for our Vintage Categories in his honor.”

T

o the off-road racing community, the passing of Hollywood leading man, film actor and television icon James Garner last July marked another loss to the sport’s fading passage of its original roots. At this year’s 6th annual NORRA General Tire Mexican 1000 rally held April 25-29, Garner’s memory and lasting impact to Baja desert racing were remembered via a special tribute staged by event organizers and friends of the Garner family. In addition to a special video screening and remarks at the rally’s “Walker Evans Racing Driver’s Meeting” held in Ensenada, Baja, Mexico on Saturday evening, April 25th, all of the unique NORRA Vintage Category vehicles wore specially created “James Garner Memorial Rally” decals after passing the Mexican 1000’s technical inspection. The Garner family made sure that very rare pieces of James Garner's racing memorabilia were on hand and displayed for NORRA teams and off-road enthusiasts to enjoy. An avid racing enthusiast who got hooked on the sport filming the classic Formula 1 film “Grand Prix,” Garner’s first off-road race was in a Porsche 356-powered Meyers Manx fiberglass dune buggy at the 1968 NORRA Stardust 7-11 race in Las Vegas, a vehicle owned by Fleetwood Enterprises (think motorhomes) founders John and Donna Crean. It was co-driven in that event by longtime Garner sidekick and sport car racer Scooter Patrick.

April 25-29, 2015 Ensenada, Mexico

Russell Thompson driving a Wuerth R1 finished first in the Buggies with back seats class and eighth overall

As part of the festivities, the newly restored car, now owned by Fred and Ginny Willert of El Cajon, California made it’s first public debut since the late 1980s – first at Friday night’s NORRA function at Ensenada’s Horsepower Ranch, and then in the “General Tire Vintage Round-Up” at downtown’s Riviera Convention Center on Saturday, April 25th. While Garner and co-driver Scooter Patrick did not complete their maiden outing, by that year’s NORRA Mexican 1000 they had moved on to Bill Stroppe’s Ford Bronco team and found themselves teammates with none other than Parnelli Jones. “The first time I got acquainted with Jim was in 1968 when he raced in the Baja 1000 in Mexico with Scooter Patrick,” Parnelli Jones told

RACER Magazine. “The Baja 1000 was a really big deal back then, big enough to be covered by ABC's Wide World of Sports.” Jones went on to say that Jim was quite a “driver, a competitor; most people don't remember that, and that he raced in a lot of different types of cars over the years. He truly was a man's man.” Garner would later shift alliances to Vic Hickey, who had designed and constructed the two “Baja Boot” cars eventually acquired by fellow off-road racer Steve McQueen. The everinnovative Hickey would build several off-road versions of Garner’s famous Oldsmobile 442s, along with the tube-framed "Oldsmobile Banshee" restored and raced at the modern-era Mexican 1000 several times by the John Swift family. The actor’s famous smile and very American good looks were featured in black and white pictures taken by Hot Rod magazine photographers in that era. They are an off-road racing treasure. One of these images, taken just before he took the green flag for that 1968 Mexican 1000, was the inspiration behind young artist Chelsea Davidson’s painted recreation. That artwork was unveiled on Friday night on the walls of Ensenada’s legendary Horsepower Ranch and served as the centerpiece for the James Garner tribute decals. Off-road racing has been blessed to have both Garner and McQueen – two absolute Hollywood A-list superstars – among its roster of famous personalities. Thanks primarily to the Mexican/Baja 1000s and the Mint 400 the sport has seen the influx of other cross-over superstars like Paul Newman and Patrick Dempsey. Youth Recap

ound 4 of the Kenda/SRT National Youth Hare and Hound Championship was greeted with high winds and intense competition as the riders would line up for another technical Southern California round of racing. With 3 separate loops laid out by series director Erek Kudla, who always gives the young ones a challenge, the event itself was manned and swept by Pro’s, sportsmen and family members. Quinn Cody, Paul Krause, Brendan Crow, Nic Garvin, Larry Klein and many others would lend a hand to make this another successful weekend. The day would start with eighteen Peewee’s, 4-8 years old, at the drop of the banner held by THR Motorsports teammates Ricky Brabec and Max Eddy. MSR Racing’s Andrew Schulz would get the lead and completely pull away from the entire field pulling a minute each lap over Blais Racing’s Cole Timboe. The two have gone back and forth again this season but with this win Schulz extends his points lead to 10 with 115 to Timboe’s 105. 3 Bros KTM’s racer Honnald would take third place for the third time this season staying consistent and holding onto third in the championship. The second race of the day would pit the Girls and Micro Mini 65cc machines side by side on a much longer 6 mile course for an hour. Fasst Co’s Caitlyn Kurtz would get the jump on the field, as she has all season, and without her biggest battling buddy; Price Utah’s Rachel Stout, she was out front all by herself. “I really had fun out there! I love the fast, the technical. I just love riding!” she exclaimed with the huge smile she always has up on the podium. Checkers MC’s Taylor Olivas would

O’neal backed Conner Eddy would finish only seconds behind Neilson taking another victory in the Micro Mini class gaining some much needed ground on points leader Talan Van Valkenberg who finished second in class. D37 Youth Desert racer James Meachem would round out the day’s top 3.

back and forth lap 2 and 3. Barnes would get into the lead but have to stop in the pits letting Colangeli back by. At that point Barnes had nothing left for Colangeli and would have to settle for third. Colangeli would score his best ever second overall Super mini while Hintz would take that first win that has been alluding him for so long! This would make for the first All Green (Kawasaki) podium of the season! T.O. Powersports Yamaha’s Mason Matthies would take another dominating win in the Mini 85cc class finishing ninth overall, 11 minutes ahead of So Cal MC’s Mason Klein. TBT Racing’s Clayton Roberts would round out the top 3 in class even with the little tumble he took just before the start of the final lap. Jr Mini Racer Jacob LaCroix would pilot his John Burr Racing’s Honda 85 to his first win of the season followed by the very dominant 3 Bros KTM of Hagen Boyce while third would go to So Cal MC’s Carter Klein . This is the first time all season LaCroix has been able to beat Boyce and he will be working very hard to keep up the battle throughout the season. The day would end with the longest, most technical course with the fast young desert racers ready to attack. Blais Racing’s Braydon Bland would get another great start but just past the bomb the engine would begin to go. “I’m not sure what happened, it just slowed down and stopped.” said Bland in the pits after handing the lead over to Troy Lee Designs/ Pro Circuit backed Hayden Hintz aboard his KX 100. Hintz has been working on climbing to the top step of the podium finishing second at Round 2 and this was just the opportunity he needed. O’Neal racer Nick Colangeli would also benefit from Bland’s departure taking over second overall just ahead of Payson, Uah’s Burke Barnes. While Hintz would pull away the first lap Colangeli and Barnes would battle hard going

ound 4 of the Kenda/SRT National Hare and Hound Championship not only saw the return of the Vikings MC to the season after their break in 2014 but it also saw the return of FMF/KTM’s Gary Sutherlin who won Round 1 of the series. Sutherlin would DNF Round 2 in Barstow after landing wrong into a wash and fracturing his arm, having to sit out of Round 3 as well to heal but it looks like he was back to his old self once again this weekend. The banner would drop on the 100 mile Virgin Voyage staged in Johnson Valley OHV just outside of Lucerne Valley CA and the weather would definitely cooperate much better than it did Saturday with a nice breeze and cool temperatures all day. At the end of the bomb Blais Racing’s Skyler Howes would put his KTM 300 XC out front and lead for the first 20 miles. “It was great being out front and getting to dice it up with these guys!” said Howes. FMF/ KTM’s Gary Sutherlin would work his way past Howes and pull his team mate Ivan Ramirez along with him. THR Motorsports backed Ricky Brabec would get an uncharacteristically good start as well and only a few miles later he’d work his way past Howes, Sutherlin AND Ramirez to take the lead before check 1. “I actually got a good start for once!” laughed Brabec “I think it was from teaching that riding clinic to the kids yesterday” Brabec would lead the field onto the second loop with Sutherlin, Ramirez, Purvines Racing’s Nick Burson and FMF Pro 250 racer Dalton Shirey aboard his Zip-Ty Racing Husqvarna TE 250. “I was leading and following ribbon and all of a sudden there was nothing.” Brabec remembered “I know it was super windy all night and just tried to find something but I just couldn’t get it. The other guys got through clean and I was left playing catch up and was riding mad which didn’t make it any better.” Sutherlin would be back in the lead at that point and never look back. “Since this is my first race back I was only riding at about 90%,” Sutherlin said as the other racers grumbled, “so I knew I just had to be clean with Ramirez close.” After the third 35 mile loop Sutherlin would crest the final hill victorious followed by Ramirez giving FMF/KTM a half finish at Round 4. Brabec would cross the finish line visibly frustrated with his finish in third.

Gary Sutherlin, first overall

Burson followed in fourth after a good, uneventful ride followed by Shirey in fifth overall taking his the FMF Pro 250 win in as many rounds but scoring his best overall finish to date! The FMF Pro 250 class also saw a great battle between SRT Offroad’s Steven Kirk and 3 Bros KTM’s Jeff Trulove. The two would go back and forth for the entire event. When Kirk left the pits Trulove was just coming into the pits on both loops. At the finish Kirk would take another 2nd to Shirey solidifying his second place in the points chase and Trulove would finish third making his best finish in the class all season! Participating in her first National Hare and Hound this weekend was D36’s Sharon Mowell. While she normally races West Hare Scramble and is following the Endurocross championship she had an off weekend and wanted to give it a go! She wouldn’t get the lead but once she got by series points leader Meg Blackburn she would just ride her own race and pull away. Just 10 short miles before the finish she’d take a big spill, mentioning it was one of the biggest crashes she’s had in a while, but dusted herself off and hobbled into the finish to claim the TBT Racing Women’s Overall Purse for the weekend! Blackburn would follow in second extending her points lead and in third would be Grizzly Motorsports backed Lacey Todd who would also take the Women’s B victory. The Pro ATV Class has been growing increasingly. With the entire field of 16 starting at once it was Aaron Cheeney getting the jump on the field and leading for a bit before Fasst Co’s Colt Brinkerhoff would take the lead and do what he could to pull away from Maxxis/Fasst Co backed Beau Baron. The two-time ATV champion Brinkerhoff knew that the tighter, rockier courses suited Baron so he would have to do his best to hold off his advances but to no avail. Baron would make his pass a few miles later and take the lead, never looking back. Baron would cross the finish with over 2 minutes on Brinkerhoff, making it 3 wins in 3 races for the ATV’s and extending his points lead to 22! Third overall was Mark Fredrickson in his first National Hare and Hound attempt. Complete Results – www.moto-tally.com/ nhha/results.aspx/2015/4/O1/CT E

then revived the long dormant small café in Ocotillo, using the familiar name Red Feather to go along with Off-Road Café and Market. Heavily involved in the off-road world and especially the vintage motocross aspect (he’s the president of CALVMX and promotes their monthly races along with yearly national events) Vrettas decided to cater to the off-road community with a large variety of meal choices in the café along with stocking a selection of the most commonly needed supplies for the customer’s vehicles and basic food staples. Walking into the Red Feather, one immediately feels the vibe of it catering to the offroader. Walls are decorated with posters, autographed racing photos, parts from race cars and bikes along with a choice selection of vintage racing bikes carrying names such as Bultaco, Honda, Triumph and Suzuki. In addition to providing high quality meals cooked while you wait, the Red Feather hosts special events that often draw a “who’s who” of racing legends such as Broc Glover, Marty

High-ranking members of the AMA and District 37 have attended awards ceremonies held at the café including a recent gathering celebrating Desiree Bates AMA Outstanding OffRoad Rider Award as campaign organizer of the Fight For Ocotillo Wells SVRA. ig Time Speedway has once again done it right. During the last two weeks they brought in additional transfer loads of decomposed granite to add to Prairie City dirt track. The weather was a bit warm for this time of the year but the track was consistent and perfect for the evening’s racing. Eighteen classes including nearly 100 riders participated in, Pee Wee, Youth, Vintage classes and more flat track classes as well as Division 1, 2, three Speedway classes and the Billy Janniro Challenge. The Billy Janirro track layout was another challenge to the riders as it is with every round. It included two jumps, lots of turns, up the hill and around the little scoring shed on the far side of the oval track. Billy Janniro was especially happy to be able to keep his $100, finishing first in the Billy Janniro Challenge. Janniro also tied for first along with Bryce Starks in the Division One contest this night.

Only two points separate Janniro with 23 and Starks with 21 series points. Luke Becker follows them with 20 points. Jay Heidt leads the points in the vintage heavy flat track class and also took the top spot on the podium this night. Heidt is new to flat track racing this year and has improved his skills greatly since the first Big Time event, the annual Grass Track race in Placerville, CA. Wesley Nelson leads the 250cc flat track class with 17 points. Neal Johnes and Nathan Dart follow Nelson in the points chase. Only two points separate the Division two series riders. William McCloskey won this night, earning another four points, giving him a total of 20 for the series. Shane Szuh follows in a very close second place with just one point less than McCloskey. Timothy Dion and Pauly Good are also separated by only one point in the series but neither of them was the winner tonight. Kurk Kornchuk was the victor tonight. In the youth

Speedway Division 2 class Gavin Coit topped the podium tonight adding to his points lead for a total of 22. In the Speedway Pee Wee contest Colton Nelson is the boy to beat. Nelson won his class this night and leads the class in points too. In the Speedway 150 class Cameron Krezman leads “Speedway Charlie” Trana in the points chase. The side cars offered up exciting entertainment this day switching positions several times in each of the heat races. Competing side by side into the turns, one high and one low, Team Kinne ultimately won the day’s contest with a pass on the back straight that took them to the finish in the final round in front. 29th Annual Shamrocks Grand Prix Round 5 - May 3, 2015 - Primm Nevada Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

T

he 29th Annual Shamrocks Grand Prix at Buffalo Bill's Resort and Casino was held on the California Nevada State

Line in Primm, Nevada. The eight round MSR Presents D37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series raced into a warm windy May weekend at the sprawling Primm Valley Casino Resorts. The track was reported to be approximately eight miles long consisting of deep whoops, sand, rocks, gravel, Stadium Off-Road track, motocross and technical sections. We are now beyond the half way point of the eight round series with three remaining rounds after the summer break. Round six will be the first weekend of October after the break from the heat. This reporter was walking the course on Sunday, day two of round five of the Big 6 GP. The premiere event of the Big 6 GP is the West Coast Grand Prix ninety minute plus one lap version for Intermediate, Expert and Pro racers held on Saturday, day one. It was Ox Motorsports racer Colton Udall winning his fourth WCGP Pro race in a row, after following 2014 WCGP Pro Champion Eric Yorba for seven laps. Udall eventually took advantage of a Yorba mistake then gapping out to finish nine laps for the win, Yorba placed second, and Ryan Reina third.

Seth Abrahamson captained his Sidecar team to the win at Primm

Racing with the Quads, the Sidecars had five machines on the line with the Seth Abrahamson team sitting in the alpha spot winning three of four rounds as we bring the three wheel specialized bikes to the sprawling layout of Primm. Abrahamson twisted his way with his teammate through the scoring chicane and a forty-two second lead over the second place machine of Mark McDade on lap one. Abrahamson never looked back finishing four laps, and two minutes and five seconds over second place McDade to win the Sidecar class. The McDade duo finished up in second but not before being pursued by the Michael Burns Jr. team for the entire race in the battle for second. Placing third, the Burns squad was never further back than twelve seconds of the McDade machine, just never able to get the drive to lock in a pass. The Duncan Racing crew had two machines up front in the Quad Expert, as the dueling duet, in 2014 Big 6 GP Quad Expert Champion Steve Albert and throttle heavy Tyler Henschel scurrying for a passing opportunity as he pressured the leader Albert. Henschel remained focused on Albert, waiting to strike and never being scored further than two seconds behind Albert in the first two laps. Henschel made his play on lap three for the lead as Albert steps down to second, Henschel finished five laps for the Quad Expert win and Albert pulls through the checkers twenty seconds behind Henschel for second, Richard Cruz third. Race fourteen, the second to last race of Chase Brubaker, en route to the race #14 overall day two and the weekend has the Heavyweight win and the Lightweight I Novice class win Novice and Beginner, and the Lightweight-I Novice and Beginner ready for the Grand Prix start. Johnny Degen reins his Yamaha in the HWT Novice for first overall in the inter-class race as he finishes up lap one. On a Kawasaki in the LWT-I Novice, Chase Brubaker has second and just five seconds back of Degen, Tyler Henschel #T2, biding his time before he makes a pass on Steve Albert III #T1

CFTA Opens With a Full Stable Prairie City SVRA, Rancho Cordova, CA April 18, 2015 By Karen Gould Photos by Checkered Flag Photography

T

he California Flat Track 2015 AMA Championship Series opened at the Prairie City SVRA with an outstanding event promoted in conjunction with Big Time Speedway. The newly configured short track prepared by Big Time Speedway, not only boasts a new decomposed granite racing surface but also slight banking and a back straight away that sets the riders up for a fast and safe entry into turns three and four and wide enough to easily accommodate racing 3 wide. This night the ambulance never moved. The newly constructed aluminum grandstands were occupied with family, friends and fans enjoying the perfect racing weather. A bit warm in the afternoon the track surface required constant attention by the Big Time Speedway crew and when the sun went down and racing began the track came into itself, fast and consistent cushion short track. Over 120 entries included the youngest riders on PW50cc bikes, Vintage bikes, and modern bikes, and everything in between. As the first race of a 9 race series CFTA Riders will be scored and earn championship points in eight of the nine scheduled races. However, both the Pro Class and Vintage class are money races at each event. This CFTA AMA Championship series is possible because of the support of sponsors such as Motion Pro, Saddleman, Rod Lake Racing, Chris Baker Hay Sales, Baker Racing and many more. They are also working with the “Feel Like A Pro Dirt School” and a one day school was presented at Prairie City on May 29th, the day before the AMA Grand National, Sacramento Mile. Racing began with the youngest riders aboard PW 50’s. The 7-8 year old class rider #228 Kage Tadman quickly took the lead and never looked back. This little tyke is one to keep an eye on as his skill and speed were

astounding for one so small. Nolan Hunter then turned heads as he turned the throttle coming from last place in laps 1 and 2 to finish first in the 150 Heads Up class after working his way through the eight other riders in this class. Clark Miller and Brad Miller finished second and third respectively. The 230 modern 4 stroke class created a stir in the stands during the final lap as Cory Rich stole the win from Michael Mannion coming out of turn four at speed and overtaking Mannion just before the finish line. Mannion held the front spot from the start but finished second, Jack Roberts rounded out the top three. Brad Spencer, a fast and competitive contestant on cushion short tracks for years, showed the other eight vintage heavy riders the fast way around this this track. Spencer earned the largest portion of the the $500 bounty for this win. Behind him Jack Jones and Jeff Gonzales were putting on their own show battling for the second spot. At the end of 10 laps it was Spencer, Jones and Gonzales. Dylan Shumate was proud to carry the checkers in a victory lap after winning the 85/ 150 Amateur Youth Class. Blake and Kristopher Clark finished second and third. Mike Pitschner, Mark Hunter and Armando Miranda powered through the ten laps of the Senior Amateur class in that order. Robert Curry led the Senior Expert class to a win followed by Chris Baker and Ted Tamagni. Kevin Keeran didn’t get the holeshot at the start but it didn’t take him long to take the lead in the first lap and he just kept going in the Open Expert class. Ted Tamagni was not far behind at the checkers. Chris Baker rounded out the class. Keeran finished in front of Baker again in the Vet Expert 35+ class later in the program and Michael Mannion took the checkers first in the 250 Expert class. A red flag in the open amateur class prompted a single file restart with Blake Thompson in the front of the line. Darrel Beardsley was behind him but lost that spot to Brad Miller and finished third. Daniel Clark, Pal Tinoco and Mike Pitchner filled the Vet Amateur podium. The money race, the Pro Expert class, included fourteen riders on two rows. Tony Meiring rode his own race in the front for the 20 laps. Behind him a battle ensued for the next three positions in this race. At the checkers it was Meiring, Raggio, Beau Thompson and Jeremy Hannah. E

the lead back and forth in the Vintage 500/ Expert money heat race. Jones finished first in that competition. In the main Jones got the holeshot with Brad Spencer in hot pursuit. Spencer twisted the throttle working the inside and the outside for the first three laps of the race before he managed to get by Jones on the outside. Paul Herman and Gonzales followed them to the checkers. Mike Rush proved to be the man to beat in the Open Pro money class. Rush got the lead of this thirteen rider competition from the start with Chris McDougal close behind. It didn’t take them long to pull away from the pack. Behind them Bradley Spencer Jr. was leading the second pack of riders. Kayl Kolkman finished lap one in seventh place and at the end of the race finished fourth. John Vanderlaan, who has improved his speed and skill on the track finished fifth. Brandon Bergen and Andrew Luker were sixth and seventh. Dylan Shumate was thrilled to carry the checkers after winning both the 85/150 Amateur youth class and the 65/110 4 stroke youth class. His uncle Kevin Keeran also carried the checkers at this event taking the victory in the Vet Expert 35+ class. Paul Ott and Anthony Mitchell rounded out that podium. The quad pro event had two red flag restarts following a couple of wild crashes. Andrew Rogers, put on the brake and gave his quad gas to avoid hitting another rider head on. As he did that his quad went into the air throwing him and severely damaging the quad. He was out for the night. Chad Efrid caused the second red flag and single file restart. He then came from last to finish this class in the front of the pack. Tim Baptista and Mikey Zavaa followed Efird to the checkers. A fabulously successful and fun event came to a close with a line of riders at the little track office waiting for their envelopes of money earned and talking about the fun they had after the tenuous start to the day. Not a pool table surface for the riders but a fast and competitive track. CFTA will return to Lemoore Raceway in September 2015.

he CFTA team made their way to Lemoore, California knowing there was a threat of rain, confident that they would race. CFTA managed to be water conscious this day and let mother nature do the watering of the track. With a little grooming in the pits the bikes were on the track just a little later than planned and the rain stopped leaving a partly cloudy pleasant afternoon, beautiful racing weather. This venue was a new one for all of the riders. The facility is neat and clean and boasts wonderful grand stands, a large pit area and a crew that is hard to beat as well as great track prep. The track is a hard packed 1/5 mile blue groove car track with banking most of the way around. VP Racing Fuels signed on as the series title sponsor on April 13, 2015. Founded by Steve Burns, they have been providing fuels for racing since 1974 and are considered by many to be the best racing fuels available today. Quads were first on the track brushing off the dust and laying down some rubber on the tacky track surface. In the morning there was concern about too much water and by late afternoon the track needed to be watered. Jerry Kennedy showed up with his new local Harley Davidson 750 rider Andrew Luker to enjoy the day. Jerry rode well staying on two wheels to the finish in the Senior Amateur class. Along with Kennedy another well known old time fast rider, Donnie Harrell came out of the woodwork to race Lemoore winning the Senior Amateur class. Mark Hunger and Mike Pitschner followed Harrell to the finish. Rob Lanoy and Cory Rich enjoyed close competition in the Senior Expert class mixing it up with Tim Niles. At the checkers it was Lanoy, Rich, and Niles. Darrel Beardsley not only won the Open Amateur class but also volunteered to flag most of the day as well. Blake Thompson kept Beardsley honest through their ten lap race but he never got the opening he was looking for finishing second followed by Brad Miller. Kenzie Rae continues to go faster at each event, finishing fourth in this nine rider class. Jack Jones and Jeff Gonzales put on a show aboard their vintage Yamaha 500’s in the afternoon trading Rob Lanoy leads Cory Rich to the finish in the Senior Expert class E

CALVMX/100% VINTAGE MOTOCROSS Round 5 - April 11, 2015 - Perris Raceway, Perris CA By Steve Caro - Photos by Kathryn Caro

T

he vintage racers of CALVMX held their last night race over five years ago, ironically at the same location where they returned for their return to racing under the lights.. For round four of the 2015 season, the vintage/post-vintage cavalcade returned to Perris Raceway. The April event

Ron Renzulli 81, Brad Russell 45G

marked their first race of any kind at the facility in several years. With clear skies and comfortable temperatures, Southern California’s oldest continuously operating track rang with the sounds of classic racing machinery and the nostalgic smell of pre-mix exhaust as the sun sank and the moon rose in the sky. Age designated classes often feature a plethora of machines of various engine displacements. The most popular sizes seem to be 250cc and the infamous 500cc two strokes that not long ago were the ultimate test of a rider’s skill set. In the 50 Plus GP Intermediate class, a field of half liter and full liter machines took to the course. Kevin Rogers (Hon) dominated the challenging Perris course with perfect 11 moto scores. In moto one, Ron Rinden (Hon) grabbed

Kirk Jackson

the early lead with Bengt Luotonen on a Maico and Rogers giving chase. By lap two Rogers had powered his way into the lead with Luotonen close behind. The duel continued between the front-runners with Rogers persistently clinging to the lead spot. At the checkers, it was Rogers with the moto win, followed by Luotonen and Mark Stubbs on another Honda in third. The second moto was a true night race as the sun had set and the track lights were at full power. The darkness created an eerie atmosphere with senses heightened in the twilight. Rogers powered his way into the lead as the mixed field of Novice, Intermediate and Experts took to the track for their final race of the evening. Behind him were Don Hansing (Mai) and Luotonen. Rogers never wavered in the moto and faced minimal challenge as he sped towards both the moto and overall victory in the class. Luotonen’s 2-2 tally garnered him second overall with Hansing’s steady 4-3 scores giving him the final podium place. Be it the pre-1975 classes or Post Vintage era, Travis McCaw and his Honda’s are always serious contenders for overall victories. Continuing the trend in the post vintage GP-1

1890 Auto Park Place Chula Vista CA 91911

SAVE BIG! Go South for a Winner! San Diego’s best selection of

125 Intermediate class, McCaw traded moto victories with Suzuki mounted Phil Revilee. Rick Guilmette (Suz) nailed the holeshot in the first moto, with McCaw and Revilee closing in fast. McCaw moved into the lead before the end of lap one, with Revilee moving into second. It looked like McCaw was going to run away with the moto win, but Revilee had other plans. As the moto progressed, Revilee closed in on McCaw and then staged a late race pass for the lead. McCaw never gave up and kept the pressure on until the very end of the moto. At the checkers, it was Revilee, McCaw and Scott Piddington’s pristine Kawasaki KX-125A-4 in third. With the moon in the western sky, McCaw and Revilee resumed their battle for the overall class victory while Guilmette followed in third with Piddington fourth. By the end of lap two, McCaw began to pull away from his pursuers. Similar to many of his run away wins in the vintage classes, McCaw hammered the track for the remaining laps and sped to a relatively unchallenged victory. His 2-1 moto scores broke the tie with Revilee’s 1-2 tally. Guilmette took third overall, followed by Piddington. Other race winners on the night included Kirk Jackson (Hon) in GP-3 125 Expert over fellow Honda pilot Ron Renzulli. Mark Sandzimier took the gold in GP-2 125 Expert, while Carole Feeney (Kaw) topped Women’s Intermediate over Katherine Wood (T-M) and Brenda Wise (Yam). Scoring an impressive victory on a truly classic machine, Julia Notman on a Maico topped the women’s novice class. Vintage Sportsman 500 Expert saw Greg Landers (Yam) sweeping both motos in convincing fashion over Mark Wood (CZ) and Gary DeForest (CZ). Tanner Pies battled wheel-to-wheel with Tom Decrescente in 3 Wheeler Open Expert and emerged with the overall win with Decrescente taking a well deserved second overall.
