« A little over 200 years ago, Quebec’s legislature debated whether one Ezekiel Hart, a Quebecer and a Jew elected by the voters of Three Rivers/Trois‐Rivières, could assume his seat. It decided not. The ostensible reason was that he could not swear his oath of allegiance on a Christian Bible. (The real argument, though historians disagree on this, may have been that he would have supported the English faction in the legislature against the French majority.) Hart did eventually swear on the Bible but was still kept out – even after the voters re‐elected him. Eventually he gave up trying31 ». La première loi de plein émancipation politique des juifs a été adoptée grâce à Louis‐Joseph Papineau et du parti Patriote québécois. « Of course, their desire to ''protéger la langue française'' was not accidental; they weren’t just lovers of Proulst and Flaubert – French was the language of the ethnic nation. But the strategy supplied rhetorical power for the principal nationalist project of the time : removing from the province the highest possible number of English‐speaking Protestants and Jews – the most steadfast opponents of secession, and the people who were the least deferential to their francophone and culturally‐Catholic surroundings 32». Un reportage récent de Martin Ouellet dans la Presse canadienne : « Le libéral Jean‐Marc Fournier s’est retrouvé sur la défensive mercredi pour avoir évoqué, la veille, les exactions nazies contre les symboles religieux »33. C’est avec un sans‐gêne déconcertant qu’on traite les politiciens « nationalistes » du Québec de « fascistes »34 dans les médias anglophones du Canada.
