evergrande 707m tower HOK | 2014 | Wuhan, CN | Project Designer

Evergrande, a chinese developer, contacted our Hong Kong office for this tower proposal in Wuhan, China. Our New York office was requested to complete the concept design package because of previous working relationships and experience. Evergrande is attempting to purchase a site in a newly masterplanned area of Wuhan. In order to bid for the site they must submit a proposed design to the local goverment for what they would build if given the rights to the site. My role on this project was lead designer. I lead a team of architects and engineers on this 5 week effort to design, client review and document the proposal. The first two weeks of the project were dedicated to massing studies for an interim meeting with the client. We submitted 6 massing ideas ranging from the extreme exploratory to elegant and conservative. The client ultimately picked the design shown based on the chairman’s preference. The remaning 3 weeks we modeled and detailed the design while working with our in house structural team to ensure the building was structurally viable. Ultimately, even with the short time period, the proposal had to be proven through the eyes of the developer. I lead a small team of architects and engineers throughout the project, modeling, rendering, drawing, interacting with client, rendering company, consultants and various hok offices, and putting together the final design document.

The basis of the design is a pure square at the base to a circle at the crown. There is an ancient chinese belief that the earth was square the heavens a circle. This tower symbolizes that belief honoring the modern chinese boom while respecting it’s long and cherished history. The reveals help appropriate the floorplates and are crucial to the design by correcting the enclosure geometry as the tower rises. This tower design is simple, responsible and elegant.

The analysis shown was needed to ensure viability of the building. Elevatoring diagrams, program analysis charts and planning all were key aspects to the design. The design is elegant and simple in that is semetrical on all sides. The core walls remain in place throughout the height of the tower creating 功能组成与建筑高度的关系 PROGRAM STACK DIAGRAM HEIGHTinward RELATIONSHIP a strong and simple structural solution to the tower and each of the 4 sides of the tower are the same. The core fuctions -transition as needed as the tower rises in height. The structural core walls then become the corridor barrier for apartments and hotel rooms on the upper most floors.

harlem boys & girls club

HOK | 2014 | New York, NY | Project Designer

Project Description - This pro-bono opportunity between HOK and the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club was established through a personal relationship. The Boys & Girls Club have purchased a Harlem site at W 155th Street and Bradhurst Ave. After extensive studies they came recognize the need for young people in this area to have guidance and place. The building program and small site inform the design as a stacked building. Working together, the Club and HOK developed the plans through desired adjacencies and separations providing the children of the Club with a unique and special experience, one of comfort and belonging. The 95,000 SF Club design highlights include a split-level basement pool with natural daylight, gymnasium, teen center, dance studio, performing arts auditorium and the New York Headquarters for the Madison Boys and Girls Club. The efficient use of site includes an expansive rooftop area with a learning garden, covered play area and patio event space.

The design pushes and pulls the program allowing for visual connection throughout the building into key areas while keeping others more exclusive. The building facade responds in a similar manner inviting the community in at the ground level highlighting the open circulation, while providing a sustainable filtered approach above in the western facade. The building aesthetic ditches the traditional academic brick and mortar with slick modern lines and materials providing a new icon and bright future for the boys, girls and surrounding community of Harlem.

I was given full design control for this mercedes-benz ground up dealership in the city of Arcadia, CA. The design process for the project was very fast and client site very difficult. Working on the project alone I was able to use the program and design the plan and building to accomodate the client, produce renderings, drawings and revit model all in two weeks. Once presented to the client they approved the design A-103and the project is now moving forward into construction documents as a design build collaboration.

This was my first project at HOK and first healthcare project. This is a very complicated project because topography, existing structures and a strong community. Our client is Clark Construction whose client is the hospital client rep. This is a fast-track project that is being constructed and packaged during documentation. I began working on this project after the competition completed and our studio was awarded the project. We had 90 days to complete SD and it was my responsibility to solve a number of lingering design issues ranging from exterior details to re-designing the entrance of the building.

Through 6 months of design review meetings while concurrently progressing the drawing set I worked with the client rep and design build contractor closely. I quickly became the point person for design on this project and was given a high level of responsibility through client rep presentations and design build contractor meetings, drawings, renderings, designing, detailing and material selection as well as coordinating and directing technical staff. This project is currently in the CD phase while portions of the work are currently under construction.

Our studio was asked to assist the San Francisco team with what began as a planning study for the existing Energy Solutions Arena. After speaking with the client and evaluating their wants and needs, it was determined a renovation and addition would be required to fulfill their requests. The client requested a stronger street presence, private access for VIPs, and a media wall for advertising and financial return as well as other programmatic additions. During this two-week exercise, working closely with a colleague under senior leadership, we designed, modeled, and rendered the addition and site updates. The exterior shell is a mostly transparent skin and roof that yields to the inner media wall wrapping around two facades of the existing building creating the requested advertising and graphics potential. The form gives the requested street presence and creates multiple plazas and entry ways into the new atrium space opening the building to the existing urban fabric beyond in one fluid move.

I was a part of a small team tackling a very complicated design problem. The goal was to provide a cohesive design aesthetic for the central terminal arrival and departure loops at LAX, TBIT being the catalyst of the retrofit. My project role focused heavily on the “light band� connecting the user experience in one stroke. I began in the schematic design phase continued throughout and am now helping facilitate the construction of the project. My early phase contributions were design and digital modeling of complicated elements as well as visualization. Due to the vast impact the project would have on the various areas of the built environment, we decided a medium of on-site photography and image matched rendering was the most accurate way to show the opening day product. This project has completed construction and revitalized an old airport with a fresh new look.

A quick lobby renovation project for an outdated corporate office building in Denver, Colorado. The client, building owner, was looking to update and re-energize the lobby. After several studies I pitched a scripted vertical scrim to hide two stories of glass looking into a dark parking garage and match the verticality of the lighting consultants design. The scrim was coordinated with a metal fabricator and is now completed. Shown above are conceptual renderings and fabrication mock ups.

I was placed in our Shanghai office for three months to help with a BIM delivery package that would end the design development phase for this project. This was a truly international effort working with consultants from all over the world. My initial role in the project was BIM delivery and supervision of an entry CD level Revit model for two hotels. Once it became clear how useful the models were in this process our team quickly became a vital part of weekly coordination efforts and my role expanded from just modeling to coordination and team training. The drawings shown are all taken directly from a Revit model produced over two months.

AECOM | 2012 | Denver, CO | Designer I - large BIM role

I began working on this project immediately after starting at AECOM. My role as an entry level design team member quickly evolved into a type of BIM captain. I helped drive the quality and level of detail in the revit model, pushing the studio into nfamiliar software territory. This was a fast paced design build project with weekly deliverables and BIM calculated take offs for constant pricing updates. This project is built and now operational.

San Angelo Community Center is located in an existing neighborhood park in East Los Angeles. As the only day-to-day team member on the project, it was my responsibility to model, draw, and coordinate the project. It was an invaluable experience to be involved in all facets of all phases. This is scheduled to be the first net zero public building in LA. This was possible through close coordination with the client and consultants using a BIM delivery process.

2009 | Los Angeles, CA | Intern (modelshop, graphics) The skillset, relationships and design I was exposed to during this time have propelled my abilities to a level beyond previous comprehension. The program, composed of four simultaneous interns, is focused mainly inside of the model shop with varying opportunities to work inside the office on: presentation drawings, books, archiving, digital modeling, competition work etc. The model shop is responsible for digital and physical fabrication of models that range from quick studies to presentation quality for clients and competition entries. While some models are still built by hand, most are assembled using 3D printing and laser cutting technologies often combining the two. Exposure to their design workflow has influenced and improved my own process. Digital prepping and assembling models often relied on a method of reverse engineering or “dumbing� down of the projects in order to ensure a certain printed physical strength and quality. This method of model construction gave me a greater sense of how buildings are made and reasoning behind design decisions.

Each intern is assigned to a specific job while he or she is there, I was assigned to Emerson College in Hollywood, CA. During this time I went to design meetings, worked as a member of the team, prepped and fabricated models. This award winning project is now complete and operational.
