Swimmer Doreen King wins gold and silver medals at 2014 FINA World Championships Submitted by Donna Stechey

Canada won gold and silver medals at the 2014 FIFA World Masters Championships in Montreal, thanks in part to an Ancaster resident in the 80-84 age group. Doreen King swam against competitors from around the world in August to win a gold medal in the 100 metre breaststroke and silver in the 200 metre breaststroke. She was also a finalist in the 50 metre breaststroke. “I still can’t believe it,” said King. “Montreal was not in the plans for this summer.”

Doreen’s journey King’s journey to Montreal started at the 11th hour - the day entries were closing for the world championship. On entry deadline day, King’s son Loren, who is also an avid swimmer, suggested she enter. “Competing at a world championship meet was on my bucket list to do. My son told me they extended the deadline and he helped me submit my [competition] credentials,” she said. Alex Parent, head coach of the Ancaster Masters Swim Club praised King’s results. “Doreen’s 2014 performances at the Canadian Masters Swimming Championships in May - first in the 50 and 200 metre breaststroke events and second in the 100 metre breaststroke event - were a significant achievement, showing she is one of the best swimmers in Canada. Her recent performance in Montreal shows she is one of the best swimmers in the world,” said Parent. King is no stranger to racing. She has competed at the local, provincial and national levels representing Ancaster in the past, so was keen to see what she could do on the world stage. King says she asked her husband Les if he’d be willing to drive with her to Montreal for the five day competition. He agreed and King entered to race in three events across

five days.

The Ancaster Master Swim Club season kicks off again in September and is open to new members looking for coached fitness training and stroke correction. Information is available at http://ancastermasters. blogspot.ca/

“It is something he encouraged me to do and we made a trip out of it,” she said. Les was poolside to cheer her on in each of her races. King competed against swimmers from Germany, Brazil, France, USA, Australia and New Zealand. “We are so proud of her,” said Les.

History and reflections The field of master level swimmers is deep across countries internationally. The Montreal event hosted over 9,000 swimmers. FINA officially created the Masters movement for athletes 25 years and older and held its first competition in 1986 in Tokyo, Japan. The next FINA World Championship is scheduled to take place in Russia in 2016. King is a member of the Ancaster Masters Swim Club and is also an avid tennis player. The Ancaster club boasts other national and provincial medalists and finalists, but none have reached the heights of King’s achievement. Mike Carnegie, a friend and teammate of King’s remarked that even his first place national championship time would have put him at a mere 11th place spot at the world competition in his men’s age group. Linda Vanderhout from the Ancaster Masters Swim Club reflected on King’s milestone. “Doreen is someone who has maintained lifelong fitness through the sport of swimming; she is one of the original members of the Ancaster club which started in 1986. Doreen inspires all of us with her humble attitude, excellent sportsmanship and dedication to training for selfdevelopment.” Vanderhout adds that King embodies the values of Masters Swimming Canada: “It goes without saying how proud we are to have Doreen swim with our club,” she said.

Bubble Soccer at the Hamilton Sports Multiplex puts a collision-inducing spin on an internationally popular game. Players compete in games of Soccer, following most of the traditional rules, with one major exception: they're encouraged to knock their opponents to the ground. That's because each player is encased in an inflated bubble from the knees up, safeguarding them from injury while fulfilling their dreams of living as a hot air balloon or bumper car. The game was first seen on a Norwegian sports show, and has spread to other parts of the world including Italy, the United States, and now Canada. It even made an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. We rent our Bubbles to consumers and businesses for Special Events, Parties, Fun days, Corporate Events, etc. Once we have received event information, a representative from Bubble Soccer multiplex can confirm availability. On the day of your event Bubble Soccer Multiplex staff are available to make sure everything runs smoothly. These staff members are trained in setting up, taking down and refereeing games.

Volunteer drivers provide access to cancer care Len, a volunteer driver through the Cancer Assistance Program (CAP), was Mr. Smith’s* driver for the eight months that Mr. Smith was attending medical appointments, including radiation treatments. For eight months, Len faithfully picked up Mr. Smith for all of his appointments, got him to his appointments on time and would safely return him home. As a volunteer driver, Len’s efforts ensured Mr. Smith could access the medical care he needed during his time of need. As a senior who was in poor health and on a fixed income, the fact that a driver was available and that this service was free, was a blessing for Mr. Smith and his children. Within his capacity as a driver, Len offered so much more than access to medical care, however. He was a “listening ear,” a confidant, a support. He was someone with whom Mr. Smith could talk about current events, share stories from the past or fears about the future with, laugh and even cry with. And it is because of Mr. Smith’s time with Len that his daughters could feel some relief, knowing that their father was not only receiving his necessary medical care, but that there was some additional joy being brought to their father’s life. The impact made by this volunteer driver truly was farreaching.

Mount Hamilton wins the OYSL West division Mount Hamilton 1996 boy’s team wins the prestigious Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) West Division! This is a first for Mount Hamilton Youth Soccer Club (MHYSC) to have a team from their club to win the West Division in OYSL. This is a great achievement for this team and club soccer. This team was started and coached by Peter Nikolica in 2007 in the Select division. From there, the team was promoted to SRSL and eventually won the South Region Soccer League (SRSL) Elite Division in 2013. 2014 was a huge year as the team was promoted to play in OYSL. OYSL is the highest level of play in Ontario for youth soccer. A dream came true as Mount Hamilton cruised through this season to win the division.

Coaches and Players MHYSC President said, “We are proud of Peter Nikolica and his coaching staff. They have been long-standing coaches with our club and have dedicated their time to quality training and development. The proof of which is this tremendous accomplishment, a first for MHYSC and an excellent way to showcase our 50th Anniversary! It should

be mentioned that Peter was an executive board member for many years and sought to develop and guide the path for players within MHYSC in both the recreational and competitive streams.

“A dream came true as Mount Hamilton cruised through this season to win the division.”

This team consisted of players from Hamilton, Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Caledonia, and Brantford. They are Head Coach Peter Nikolica, Assistant Coach John Cecca, Assistant Coach Aldo Difeo, and Manager Kulwinder Singh. Goalies: Yannick Golanbari and Alex Borsos. Defence: Peter Nikolica Jr, Stephen McDonald, Jaskaran Singh, Edward Tamale, and Zach Hobers. Midfielders: Carlo Difeo, Marcus Diloreto, Daliso Chulu, Jason Muzvidziwa, Andre Toic, Nick Matsos, Patrick Wilkon, and Danielle Perfetto. Strikers: Chris Carabas, Michael Fortino, and Derek Steenbeek.

The boys are a great group of kids who have represented the MHYSC proudly over many years. Peter and his staff have retained many of the boys from the original team and have nurtured their development both on and off the field. We are proud of the players, coaches and team officials who helped in achieving this tremendous accomplishment. Well deserved!”

Has the Tennis Force Program Visited your School? Promoting healthy active living through the life time sport of tennis

In the past year, Niagara Academy’s Tennis Force program has worked with over 800 children in grades 1 through 3. The main purpose of the program is to give back to the community and to promote healthy active living through the sport of tennis. Niagara Academy's tennis coaches have provided the Tennis Force program to schools in the community and all at no cost to the schools or students! Niagara Academy provides smaller sized racquets, balls and mini nets, allowing this program to be delivered in the school gyms. The format of the program follows Tennis Canada's Progressive Tennis guidelines, which Niagara Academy adhere to, ensuring that students have fun playing a sport that lasts a lifetime. Progressive Tennis has shown great success across Canada and is now finding its way into the schools. Educated and experienced coaches promote success at the early stages of active learning, by teaching important skills, such as: hand–eye coordination, fundamental movement skills, motor skills (agility, balance, coordination and reaction speed). All while building self-‐confidence in an enjoyable, safe and fun environment. Tennis is a lifetime sport that families can play together, all year around. Its advantage over most team sports is the low risk of injuries and enjoying individual success. Would you like us to visit your child’s school?
