It’s once in a lifetime By Rebecca Mercanti and Emille Paron, Bishop Tonnos

The Corpus Christi Cougars have had an excellent run in the Catholic Youth Organization (C.Y.O) sports this year. The elementary school located on Alderson Drive, just off of Upper James Street near Rymal Road has an enrollment of 447 students which places them to compete at the top level. During the month of November, the team won five championships in a row - senior boys’, junior boys’ and junior girls’ flag football, co-ed hockey and senior girls’ basketball - all in one week. Shortly after, the junior and senior girls’ volleyball teams took home championship medals for the school.

saves, though. He had to stop their player on the last play of the game in the shootout for us to win. And all three of our girls scored big goals for us.”

known to be a volleyball powerhouse the last few years, as this year marks their sixth consecutive championship victory for the junior girls. Claudetta Puglise and Eileen Tang, the junior girls team captains made a huge impact on the season with their hard work and concentration during every single game and practice. Coach Paul Kelly says “They were a great group of girls who were fun, but they also worked very hard during every early morning and afternoon practice. They put a lot of effort into the training to prepare for every game”.

Finally, on November 28th, the Cougars senior girls’ basketball team seized their fifth championship of the week, where they fought off a late rally to down Blessed Teresa of Calculatta.

Corpus Christi “We have some of the best athletes we’ve ever had.” Arthur DiCroce said, who coached senior boys’ football and hockey. DiCroce has taught at the school for four years now.

The girls had a very good season and were determined to secure the title of champions for another year. In the end the girls won in overtime three sets to two. As well as the junior girls, the senior girls made the school proud with their undefeated season, winning the C.Y.O championships, with the guidance of their two coaches Melissa Branscombe and Charlene Bukvic.

“That certainly was a good month for them,” George Stubbs, C.Y.O program coordinator, said with a laugh.

Accomplishments When asked if any school has ever achieved so much success in such a short period of time, Stubbs said “No. Not that I can remember. And I’ve been with C.Y.O for a couple years now.”

Grade eight student Sara Pecora has played on the senior girls’ volleyball team for five years. This past year she has showed great talent and has shined in every game she has played in. The girls had worked very hard to maintain their undefeated season which brought them to the championship game. “They were a great group of girls who always worked hard, and showed outstanding sportsmanship,” said head coach Melissa Branscombe. The girls won their championship game by three sets, which gave them back-to-back wins. Overall, the students who participated on these teams should all be recognized for their hard work and constant dedication they showed throughout the season.

The junior girls started off the success by winning the girls’ championship game, squeezing past Immaculate Heart of Mary 34-32. Then, the junior boys’ flag football team won against St. Michael by a score of 19-6. Later that day, the senior boys captured their victory by a dominating score of 33-12 against St. Theresa of Lisieux. Next came the co-ed hockey team whose 5-4 shootout victory against St. Joachim captured the school’s fourth medal. “We went into the final with Lucas Sebastiano, who is younger and smaller than the average goalie,” Corpus Christi hockey coach Nathan Startek said. “He made big

“This was a rural school,” Principal Lillian Scibetta - who is in her fifth year as principal - said about Corpus Christi’s origins. “The kids came to us from farms. Some of them had chores to do before they came to school. Then the community grew larger and larger.” It is obvious that Corpus Christi Elementary is making a huge roar in C.Y.O. sports. Recently, the Cougars took home two volleyball championships for the junior and senior girls. Corpus Christi had been

R.A. Riddell: Athletics and Academics The primary objective of our Specialized Learning Program is to help our students reach their full potential. Their passion for athletics is fed with sound coaching and progressive practice that aligns with Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model. The program at R.A. Riddell features five classes within our middle school. There are Basketball classes in grade six, seven, and eight, and Sport Academy classes in grades seven and eight. Student athletes from all over the region and from many sport backgrounds apply to come to Riddell to receive their academic and athletic programming. All of the students are challenged to “get better” every day and they respond with an intensity and effort nothing short of inspirational.

In their words…

“My love of basketball is what brought me to Riddell. When I first heard about a school that offered a program that allowed me to play basketball every day, I jumped at the opportunity to join. I came to Riddell in grade six. I had to think about it at first; leaving friends is always a difficult decision, but I decided to give Riddell a try and I have never looked back. The highlight of Riddell has been grade eight - it has continued to be a lot of fun because of all the things you can do at Riddell, hanging out with friends, playing on school teams, and all the fun intramurals offered at Riddell. The teachers are one of the best parts of Riddell. Riddell has probably the nicest teachers I have ever seen in a school. From my personal experience, I highly recommend Riddell for all kids.” Zach Hennessey Grade eight student

“At first I was a little hesitant to leave my friends and go to a brand new school, but at the end of the day I realized that being able to train everyday at school was an incredible opportunity that would probably not cross my path again. On my first day of grade seven, I was welcomed by the amazing teachers and students. Since that day, I knew this would be my school for the next two years. I would definitely recommend Riddell’s Sport Academy program to anyone who has the same love and passion for sports that I do.”

Christina Buttenham - U17 National Women’s Basketball Team - Full Basketball scholarship to Iowa University “The Sport Academy is great because it’s a place where sports and academics successfully co-exist. For me, it’s a place I look forward to coming to every day. The classes really fit around my busy swimming schedule. The strength and conditioning we get here has helped me improve my swim times. It’s good to be around teachers who understand the training schedules we have by extending deadlines when I need them, and their door is always open when I need help.” Jake Riederer former Sport Academy student “It is such a pleasure to hear a new answer to an old question, “How was school today?” Nearly every day there is a story about something positive that happened at R.A. Riddell Sports Academy. Never has our son had so much to share about his day. Never has he enjoyed school more.”

Julia Perco Grade eight student “Two of our children attended R.A. Riddell; our son in the Sport Academy and our daughter in the Basketball Focus program. The dedicated staff makes it a point to celebrate the students’ achievements both in the classroom and in the gym. Both our children continue to flourish academically as well as athletically, and have moved on confidently to their next level of academic and athletic endeavours.”

A total team effort from the Chedoke Novice Express results in Championship!! Congratulations to our Novice Select team for winning the Dick Catterall March Break championship. This was a complete team effort where a group of players have grown together and have become a team to be reckoned with! After going 2-0-1 in the Round Robin, the Express found themselves in 1st place going into the Semi-finals. A tough Acton team kept pace and forced us to Overtime. After killing off a 2 man disadvantage, Rhyan Laengerer came though with the winner over 1 minute of OT. In the final, a tough home Jordan Lion team played well and gave the Express a great game. Chedoke is very proud of their players in competition and sportsmanship. Congratulations! Submitted by Todd Bowen

Hamilton Youth Dart Association thanks its supporters By Dave Walker

A Great Run The Hamilton Youth Dart Association (H.Y.D.A) had an amazing run this year, with excellent results and accomplishments along the way. We would like to thank the Moose Lodge 1142, the RHLI Veterans Association, The Polish Legion Branch 315, Jim Roache Dart Supplies, and all the parents, volunteers, and supporters. Without all your help, we would not have been as successful. They say it takes a town to raise a child; everyone listed here is our family. We thank you all.

Accomplishments Some of this year’s accomplishments include: • Our third annual adult/youth charity shoot was held at The Moose Lodge 1142 on February 19th; we had 16 teams sign up and were able to raise $160 for The Ronald McDonald House of Hamilton. • Congratulations to our winners: Mackenzie Kingsmill and Ron Larken. We also introduced three young dart players to our family: Cody, his sister Cassandra, and Taylor.

“Without all your help, we would not have been as successful.” • On March first, we were able to take a group of our players to the Legion District B zone shoot in Dundas. Thanks to the Polish Legion 315, we were well-received. Our team included five senior and seven junior players. The juniors earned eight of the 10 available spots for the Legion Provincials and the seniors managed three of 10 spots. Therefore, 11 of our players headed to Belleville, Ontario to represent Hamilton and our district at the

Buy the end of the day, Hamilton earned the following:

H.Y.D.A. made us all proud on that day. Nick and Jason finished joint third in the provincial doubles. Both of our junior teams missed out of the quarter finals after a playoff finishing joint fifth in Ontario. The doubles team - consisting of Mackenzie and Raven - also finished fifth. The Darts Ontario Provincial Championships were on the weekend of March seventh to ninth, 2014. The host city of St Catharines welcomed over 300 qualifiers from all over Ontario, with 13 representing Hamilton. Along with the competition, the youth players mingled amongst themselves, meeting new friends, catching up with old ones, and exchanging label pins from the many cities represented. Once again, 11 of our players made it through the first day, advancing to the top 32. The following day we had five players making the top 16 and three advancing to the top eight (Nick Fraser, Jason Farnan and

• Junior Girls Singles Champion (Team Ontario): Mackenzie Kingsmill (First Hamilton player to make the team since 2005) • Junior boys doubles second place: Jason Farnan & Nick Fraser • Junior boys third place: Nick Fraser • Raven Laframboise scored 171 and Jason Farnan scored 180 • Emily Newman and Chris Brow scored third in the bursary shoots When all was said and done, H.Y.D.A. represented Hamilton in the most professional way with sportsmanship, teamwork and unity. 2004 Hamilton AAA Champions

By Rita Pugliese

The Hamilton Huskies Minor Atom AAA team ended their season on the ultimate sports high when they clinched the biggest win of their young hockey careers, the Alliance Championship! From the start of the season, this team was full of grit, talent and determination, which lead to their many accomplishments throughout the season. They took the championship at both the Huskies Tim Horton’s Tournament, and at the Hamilton Jr Bulldog Reebok Classic Tournament, and were finalists in the Oakville AAA Richard Bell Memorial Tournament. This team finished first place overall in regular season play for the Alliance. The coaching staff, led by head coach Chris Argent, demonstrated an unwavering commitment to these 9 year old boys, which was evident given the time they put into the team who played 80 games this season. Argent and his staff coached the team to an impressive record of 53-216, holding them to a ranking of 6th in the MHR Provincial Rankings. The boys will never forget this wonderful season, as their development and championship titles are among the greatest accomplishments kids at this age can achieve in minor hockey. Hamilton should be proud of these young boys who represented their city with style and class.

Royal City Soccer Club camp With the Fifa World Cup in Brazil just around the corner, soccer fever is high gear. There is no doubt the eyes of the world will be on Brazil during the month of June. Despite our Canadian team not qualifying, our soccer-thriving communities will surely still be glued to the games. Many know us to be a “hockey nation,” but few realize that youth soccer registration outnumbers all youth sports...including hockey. The benefits of soccer camp for kids might seem obvious – healthy, physical activity - but at the Royal City Soccer Club, soccer camp is so much more. If soccer is the number one game in our youth, Royal City Soccer Club is the number one grassroots summer soccer camps in Canada. Life skills such as leadership, team building and problem solving are key components to our camps across the country. At Royal City Soccer Club camps, boys and girls don’t have to be great soccer

players and actually don’t need any soccer experience at all. Whether your son or daughter wants to improve his/her skills or simply wants to try soccer in a non-competitive, fun environment, soccer camp is the right choice for you. While, yes, soccer is the focus for most soccer camps, it is hardly the most important thing that is taught. The most important things taught at a soccer camp are personal development and life skills, all while having fun. After all, if your child is not having fun doing it, what is the point? This summer, Royal City Soccer Club is excited to host the 22nd year of Summer Soccer Camps. Having hosted over 150,000 campers in over 90 cities, our grassroots soccer camps are the most popular in

Soccer and FUN!

Canada. Our camp program is uniquely designed to offer a soccer focus in the morning and a leisure swim with other camp activities in the afternoons, while promoting personal development, team building and of course, FUN! We encourage all boys and girls between the ages of five and 13 to register for full day, morning and afternoon sessions. We also offer early drop off and late pickup times, fully supervised, at no extra charge. The camps operate during the months of July and August. Michael Carnegie’s focus never fails to impress

By Donna Stechey

Ancaster swimmer Michael Carnegie set a new provincial record for his age group in the long course 100 metre butterfly event at a race on Saturday, April 5th in Toronto. Carnegie posted a time of 1:04.60, breaking the previous record of 1:05.41, set in 2009. Carnegie set the new record while competing at the Toronto Downtown Swim Club “All Out Swim 2014” at the University of Toronto, and took first place in the 45 to 49 age category in all five of his long course events: 100 metre butterfly, 100 m freestyle, 200 metre freestyle, 50 metre butterfly, and 200 metre individual medley.

three years, including 58.19 seconds in the 100 m freestyle. Although that was a fourth-place finish, in all other age groups at the meet, both older and younger, that time would have put me in the top three in Ontario,” says Carnegie. His dedication to the sport continues to inspire other swimmers in the area and at the Ancaster Masters Swim Club. “Mike has done an amazing job this year,” says Alex Parent, coach at Ancaster Masters Swim Club. “He is always working towards something new in the pool and outside on land. Mike worked on sharpening his races this season. He chose to do it and he put this work in at the pool, and I’m really happy for him. He had provincials two weeks ago and to repeat his performance - well, it’s not easy. It’s not easy to have back-to-back performances like his. It takes rest and focus in between races. It’s quite spectacular.”

Carnegie also competed the weekend of March 28-30th at the 2014 Ontario Masters Provincial Championship in Windsor, in the 45 to 49 age category. He finished first in the 100 metre butterfly and 200 metre backstroke, second place in the 50 metre butterfly, 100 metre individual medley, and 200 metre individual medley, and fourth place in the 100 metre freestyle.

“You don’t have to be a swim champion like Mike to be inspired by his dedication and perseverance to train for excellence,” says Linda Vanderhout, lead coordinator of the Ancaster Masters Swim Club. “He is a determined and disciplined athlete who encourages club members of all abilities to

The fast times reflect Carnegie’s renewed focus on training and preparation over the past year, including dry-land training with his friend and personal trainer, Connie Hoffmann. “The times I posted were faster than any times I had posted in the last
