Camps

Camps & more camps!

M

any of you are likely familiar with the phrase “All the news that fits.” Well, if you’re asking us, it’s “All the camps that

fit.” That’s how we’ve approached each one of our annual Camps & Clinics Guides. This is our fifth, and just as I wrote in this space a year ago, it’s our biggest yet. Not exactly in terms of page count, though it equals our largest at 64 pages from front to back. However, in terms of pure camps and clinics coverage, this is our most bountiful collection yet. For the first time in the short history of this edition, we’ve removed any content that isn’t strictly camps-related. This wasn’t an easy choice, because we know how much our fans love our high school sports coverage, as well as our other monthly departments like Locker Room and Level Up. And it’s not like it’s a slow time in the high school sporting world, either. However, we made the choice because, quite frankly — we had more camps than we could fit. Also, if we’re going to call it a Camps & Clinics Guide, we probably should put as much in about them as we possibly can. So, here you go! Beginning on Page 8, we have 6

over 45 pages devoted purely to camps and clinics. As many as 30 of those pages feature listings of more than 500 camp options that span from March through August. \Fitting all those camps in isn’t easy, but we do it because we take a lot of pride in offering this resource to you. In the meantime, we also take a lot of pride in providing some of the best high school sports coverage in Northern California. And we plan on getting right back to that. Our April issue will release on April 2, and before that we’ll be aiming to post Digital Weekly editions for the weeks of March 16 and March 23. Those issues will have extensive coverage of the state basketball playoffs, wrap-ups on Bay Area soccer and a watchful eye on the several spring sports which are now going full tilt. Also, SportStarsOnline.com will have some exclusive content which will be looking back at the section basketball championships as well as new basketball, baseball and softball rankings. In the meantime, take a second to enjoy this ridiculously warm spring weather and turn your thoughts toward summer as you flip through the rest of this issue. ✪

WINNING A summer program blending academics and athletics has St. Joseph Notre Dame schools on the cutting edge of sport smarts

W

hen it comes to camps, it’s not always easy to find the perfect blend of fun and learning. Heck, the same can be said when it comes to the everyday classroom. Mixing academic summer camps and sports isn’t a new concept, but it is a growing one. Across the country, especially schools and camp operators have caught on to the theory that math and science camps don’t have to be just for nerds any more. Truth be told, “nerds” today are trending! But to be both, smart and athletic. Seldon Cooper meets Shaquile O’Neal. The ultimate Nerdalete! According to SPARK, a research-based, public health organization of San Diego State University Research Foundation, healthy students are better learners. Over the years, a number of scientists have shown a correlation between high standardized test scores and physical fitness scores (CA Dept. of Education study), and that more time spent in physical education class did not result in a decrease in academic performance. Physical activity positively affects the following: Overweight and obesity HDL cholesterol Blood pressure Insulin resistance Skeletal health Musculoskeletal injuries Psychological well-being Self-esteem Anxiety and depression An impressive list of outcomes everyone can support. Read more at www.sparkepe.org Years ago, educators began blending health studies with physical education and recreation courses. These help to round out a student’s learning experience while working out tension and stressors that might be distractions in the classrooms. But that’s not the only reason summer camps are offering the blend. Students build skills, explore interests, have a ton of fun and actually enjoy learning. At St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, a variety of academic courses are available to allow students to develop their skills or pursue a passion. At SJND K-8 students are introduced to new academic, athletic and fun activities and courses, including basketball clinics, cooking, engineering with LEGO®, theater, Speech and Debate and more! Popular studies are Back to School Boot Camp and Middle School Success Academy — aimed at preparing elementary and middle school students with core skills needed for academic success. After a few hours of morning classes for example, campers might move on to interactive group fun, sports, swim-

ming, community service, conservation projects, games and day trips. Some camps, though not offered at St. Joe’s, often include overnighters with organized activities such as bonfires, movie trips, bowling, mini golf and more Summer Discovery, a popular SJND program developed five yeas ago, is for rising 6th-8th graders. “(The school) started the Summer Discovery program five years ago because their was a need in the community for high quality, low cost summer programming,” St. Joseph principal Seth Feldman explained. “The kids in the community wanted both an academic adventure and to still grow as athletes. Kids could take a computer class in the morning and play soccer in the afternoon. “This model fits with our school because at SJND about 65 percent of our students play a sport and nearly 50 percent play two sports. Additionally, our kids seek out the challenges of AP and honors classes. We know that SJND is a great place for academics and a terrific place for athletics — so we thought why not offer that type of programming in the summer?” The model has been beyond successful. The Middle School Success Strategies program has grown to serve nearly 75 6th-8th graders and the basketball, volleyball, track and soccer camps traditionally do quite well. Feldman noted that the cooking and engineering classes were among the more popular summer choices. Students can mix and match between academic enrichment and sports clinics, capturing the best possible experience for a kid. “It highlights our school’s strengths: stellar academics and a full variety of extra curricular offerings,” Feldman said. “There is a reason we pair a sport with a speech and debate class; the same type of student is drawn to both activities.” The advanced honors geometry class is another success story of the program. Students who know they want to complete advanced honors mathematics courses in the later years of high school, have the opportunity to knock out a year’s worth of geometry and parts of Algebra II through a five-week summer course — and for many, some sports on the side. “One of my students from four years ago knew he wanted to be an engineer,” Feldman said. “He took the class (did well) and then was able to take AP Calculus and AP stats his senior year. He applied this year to several engineering programs at MIT, Cal Tech and UCLA. He tells me that class set him up for success to achieve his goals.” The class is fast-paced, and there is tutoring before and afterwards. This class is also open to all students from the East Bay who meet the requirements for admissions. Kids have to qualify for the class and we usually have students from St. Joseph, Alameda High, Encinal, Piedmont, Chinese Christian, Holy Names and elsewhere. After nearly 30 years of running camps, National Academy of Athletics founder Aaron Locks offers his nine steps for choosing the right camp Summer camps should be an awesome experience for all children. The focus should be on fun, education and being active. This is my 29th year involved in youth sports camps, clinics and trainings, and I’m excited to offer these tips. When selecting a summer sports camp, or any summer camp for that matter, it is very important that you do your homework. The following information will be very helpful to parents attempting to find the most engaging programs for the kids to participate in this summer. Many of these topics may seem to be common sense, but as a father of two active kids I know how important it is not to skip any of the steps.

STEP ONE — TAKE TIME

STEP THREE — THE FAMILY BUDGET

Figure out your family needs. Is the camp going to serve as day care, instruction or vacation fun? If the parents are working and the kids need a safe place to go, do the times and scheduled weeks fit the family? Find out the ages of the participants to make sure that the camp is ageappropriate for your child. Many parents feel our kids are capable of playing sports when they’re very young. Although that is true on some levels, putting your child in a camp that is not ageappropriate can cause major challenges. Last summer at one of our lacrosse camps, a mom registered her six-year-old for care. But when she registered, she put him down as an eight-year-old. He was a big kid for his age, but there is no way he could handle the lacrosse stick. He didn’t have the hand-eye coordination to catch, cradle or throw the ball. After one day we recommended that she change him to an all-sports camp where he could work on his athleticism, balance and quickness — attributes that would help prepare him to be able to go to a sport specific camp.

It does no good to find out about expensive camps or extravagant adventures if your family budget will not be able to handle it. Figure out if going to one one-week camp for $600 for is better than going to three different camps at $200 per week. The old saying, “You get what you pay for” does hold weight here. However, often times parks and recreations, YMCAs and other nonprofits offer some pretty cool unit programs at very affordable rates.

STEP TWO — TALK WITH YOUR KIDS Once you know what you are looking for, it’s a good idea to be sure it’s something your kids will enjoy. Find out what your child is interested in or what they may want to learn; it can truly help to get buy-in and keep their interest the entire week. Many of us parents like to expand our children’s horizons by offering them the opportunity to try something new. I am a big fan of doing this in the camp environment. That being said, I do believe that a one-day clinic is a much better place to start than a commitment to a five-day camp. Be careful with this one folks. I can remember one time at camp about 25 years ago where the parents really wanted their son to learn to play baseball. But when he got to camp, all he wanted to do was sit in the dugout. Luckily, our camp director was able to engage the young man and help him to see how much fun playing baseball can be.

STEP FOUR — GET SPECIFIC Once you have decided the type of camp to register your child for, it is time to sift through the many options. Not every sport-specific camp is the same. If it is a basketball camp, does it offer competition, instruction or just fun and games? Be sure to ask questions and do your research online to find out specifically what the camp offers. Let’s face it, most of our kids want to go to camp to have fun and compete, where parents might want them to actually learn some sport-specific and life skills. A few years back we had a player come to our softball camp in Moraga. She was actually quite good, but she did not have a very good attitude about playing with others. She wanted to be first in line with everything, and when it came time to doing the drills, she wasn’t that interested in improving rather than showing off what she already knew. Our camp staff worked with her and explained the value of the drills and how it would help her to become a better player. By the end of the week, she was not only a better player, but she was able to help demonstrate for the kids who weren’t as skilled. It was really great to see how she transformed into a leader. The life lessons taught through participation in team sports are some of the most important for kids as they grow up.

STEP FIVE — WHO'S RUNNING THINGS?

It is very important to know who will be working with your child. Don’t be concerned with just the name attached to the camp, but who will be doing the coaching or teaching every day. Find out what the camper-to-coach ratio is. Most quality camps offer a maximum 10 to 1 camper to coach ratio. This allows for maximum teaching and supervision for safety.

STEP SIX — HISTORY OF THE CAMP There are many camp companies. Some have been around a short while and others have a longer history. If you are going to put a deposit down or pay for a camp that is two or three months away, be sure the company is reputable and find out their refund policies. You can check with Yelp or other online ratings. Another tip is to check if the camp has a Facebook page. See who is posting information and that will help to give you a better idea of the experiences others have had at the camp. Follow us on Twitter & Instagram, and like us on Facebook!

STEP SEVEN — LOCATION It’s important to make sure that the location of the camp is going to be offered has quality facilities as well as being nearby your home or office. Are the facilities in a good neighborhood?

STEP EIGHT — GO TIME Once you have registered for the camp, you should receive a confirmation which should include all of the equipment or things you will need to bring to camp. Find out if they provide meals or if there are supplies you may need to purchase separately. This one is personal to me. I remember when I signed my son up for a basketball camp at a local college. On paper it looked like everything would be great. Unfortunately, when we got there he didn’t get to play in the big gym featured in all of the brochure pictures. He played outdoors half of the time and in the school’s auxiliary gym the rest. Part of the experience my son wanted was the opportunity to play on that big beautiful gym floor. Luckily the staff did a good job, and by the end of the week he ended up having fun at camp.

STEP NINE — THE DROP OFF Be sure you feel comfortable when you drop your child off at the camp. Often times the child might be uncomfortable because they are new to the sport or activity, but as the parents, we should always use our gut for judging. Parents will often sit and watch the first 15-20 minutes to make sure things are organized, running smoothly and the child is having a good experience. Be sure to double-check that the camp has your cell phone number or any other emergency contacts. Also be sure that you have a number you can use to reach the camp if needed. Finally, confirm the time for pick-up. If you are looking for a summer sports camp for your child, I’d appreciate it if you took a look at www.NationalAcademyOfAthletics.com. We offer over 350 sessions, 10 different sports and over 40 cities in Northern California. Whether you to go to one of the National Academy of Athetics camps or another, I truly hope your child has a safe, fun, educational experience. ✪

From Disney to the gridiron

Sometimes going to a camp or clinic helps us think about our sport in different ways. For Artie Gigantino, a football coach who has worked at every level, including the NFL, inspiration was found in the unlikeliest of sources — Walt Disney. “As a young football coach, I always had a great interest and curiosity in finding easier and clearer ways in which to communicate information to my players,” said the coach who now does individual player evaluations and helps families through the recruiting process. But one night while watching a documentary on Walt Disney, he became intrigued at the Disneyland creator’s use of storyboarding in developing his famous animated shorts and films. The light bulb went on. “I took Mr. Disney’s idea and applied it to football,” he said. “I started to draw defenses on a dry erase board in my office, and left them up there for a month or two at a time. By simply seeing it each day, ideas and concepts of how to utilize this defense alignment would come to me. What type of blitzes to run? What type of stunts to run? To this day, every office I have ever worked in has walls of dry erase board in it in which ideas are storyboarded.” When you’re at your camp or clinic this summer, take it all in. The secret that could unlock your potential may be lurking as something totally unexpected. ✪ training as well as film sessions and clinics. More than you think D

id you know that Pilates is incredible cross training for any sport? Perhaps you always thought that Pilates is “just for girls”? Actually, Joseph Pilates was a professional boxer. Beginning in early 19th century Germany, Mr. Pilates extensively trained boxers, wrestlers, gymnasts, circus artists, dancers, actors and police officers. In our era, Joseph & Clara Pilates’ work has been embraced by professional athletes of every sport. Standout NFL receiver Antonio Brown, tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, Tiger Woods, John England, the New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic and many others all use Pilates as an integral part of their training. Pilates is a method designed to strengthen the core, while increasing whole body strength, flexibility, balance and healthy body mechanics. Many commonly used training regimens utilize high repetitions with heavy weights, followed by stretching (hopefully) to prevent the tightening of muscles. In contrast, Pilates emphasizes short reps focused on perfect form and the “eccentric” contraction of the muscle. (An eccentric contraction occurs when the powerful work of a muscle happens while it is lengthening rather than shortening.) Flexibility is interwoven with balance in each exercise, and an “inside-out” approach to strengthening is used — working the deep muscles that stabilize the joints before addressing the superficial muscles. The result is a fantastic workout, newly found body awareness and a re-training of faulty body mechanics. And solid, healthy body mechanics create a smart and efficient quality of movement that allows athletes to harness untapped power to throw the ball farther, run faster and jump higher — all while preventing injury. Athletics require dynamic, multi-dimensional movement of our bodies. In sports, movements are complicated and two-dimensional. Tackling and hitting require rotation and torquing in any given direction with force. This means that two-dimensional bicep or hamstring curls or crunches don’t translate well into the complex movements needed for the power and agility of elite athletics. Specialized spring-resistant Pilates machines (Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair) enable athletes to train dynamically, target the body’s deep muscles that stabilize the joints and build strength in multiple planes and alignments. This conditioning seamlessly translates to success at throwing a ball effectively, swinging a bat, dismounting off of an apparatus, sprinting towards home or defying injury from a hard hit. Strength and flexibility also determine speed. You may have a very fast gait, but if your muscles are tightly bound, your stride will be shorter than its potential. And tight muscles often lead to injury which can haunt an athlete for an entire career or force early retirement. Pilates can help prevent injuries, and can improve on strength, flexibility and speed after returning from injury. And Pilates training is a phenomenal resource for plyometrics. While decreasing the effects of gravity during jumping drills, athletes are able to re-pattern inefficient body mechanics that are slowing them down and dampening their power. Pilates takes an athlete’s already-dynamic body and mind and transforms it from the inside out. What happens when you increase deep core strength, flexibility, balance and new movement possibilities? An athlete’s game goes through the roof. ✪ — Tonya Maries Amos

ot every camp or clinic offered throughout Northern California will create five-star recruits that will immediately be targeted by college recruiters from every corner of the nation. Many offerings listed in the 2015 SportStars Camps and Clinics issue can improve the athletic skills — from specialty sport and position camps to broader strength and conditioning clinics — while others focus on the fun and fundamentals of youth sports. But, what if your child is not fully able to physically, mentally, or socially participate and interact in the vast array of athletic camps? What if some physical challenges or developmental delays keep your child from being able or willing to sign up for a camp or clinic this year? Fortunately, numerous camps cater to children and young adults with special needs. These offerings vary from clinics geared toward specialized skills — both physical and social — and general camps that included physical activity as part of a larger curriculum. “(Special needs camps) give my daughter the opportunity to do something that her brothers and sisters can do,” said Heather Green, Board President of the Down Syndrome Information Alliance and mother of Gabby, a child with Down Syndrome who participated in the I Can Shine Bicycle Camp last year. “It was so much more than just riding a bike. It gave her a whole new sense of confidence.” The iCan Bike Camp has been held in Yuba City and Reno in past years, and Green and DSIA are working to secure a site in Sacramento County this summer to provide the fiveday program that teaches kids with special needs to ride bicycles. The DSIA website (www. downsyndrome.org) and iCan Shine Yuba City Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/ icanyc) will have updates on camps offered this summer, though Green said that the Sacramento County camp will be held July 27-31. The iCan Bike Camp will be held June 15-19 at River Valley High School in Yuba City. Interested bikers can register at http://cornerbikes. com/ican-bike/. Green was a founding partner of DSIA, which was formed in 2004 by three families seeking greater access to support, information and services in their community. The organization is now a dedicated non-profit organization serving Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, El Dorado, Nevada, Yuba and Sutter counties that provides support and resources to empower individuals with Down Syndrome and their families. Partnering to offer special camps and to share information about other opportunities with their network is just one of many ways that DSIA connects special needs children and sports. Doug Senz, a co-owner of NorCal Courts in Martinez, had sought sports programs that catered to his son, John Scott Senz, and other kids with special needs before he helped open the sports complex in 2012. Senz wanted to find a camp for his son to play basketball with other special needs kids, specifically children with cerebral palsy. When he found few offerings, he started a basketball camp with the help of Bay Area high school coaches and has brought the camp, which is supported by the United Cerebral Palsy of the Golden Gate, to NorCal Courts. Senz said the demand for the camp is somewhat limited, but he will be working to finalize dates for a camp this summer. For more information about the UCP Hoops Camp and other sports offerings for special needs kids at NorCal Courts, go to www.norcalcourts.com or www.ucpgg.org. John Scott Senz is now able to play on his middle school basketball team as well as an AAU

team since his father started the UCP hoops camp in 2010. One of the longest-standing sporting opportunities for children and young adults with special needs in Northern California and the world has been the Special Olympics, the organization founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968. The Special Olympics of Northern California (www.sonc.org) offers athletic training and competition for 11 sports (aquatics, basketball, bocce, bowling, floor hockey, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball) throughout the calendar year and also hosts the annual Special Olympics Summer Games at UC Davis. “While the Summer Games is our marquee event, our mission is to provide training for life through sports,” said Julie Rodriguez, Senior Sports Manager in SONC’s West Sacramento office. Special Olympics’ sports programs are available year-round and families and athletes interested in participating in SONC programs can go to the “Become an Athlete” page on the SONC website. Not every special needs camp offering is strictly focused on sports, but other camp offerings use sports as part of a larger curriculum for children and young adults with special needs. Altitude at Via (www.viaservices.org/altitude-via/), formerly Camp Altitude, is a two-week summer camping experience in Cupertino for boys and girls with social cognitive challenges. Sports are just one of many activities used to build social skills, independence and self-confidence in middle-school and high-school participants. “Our goal is to work on social skills and prepare kids for post-high school life,” said Program Manager Kirsten Jensen, who has worked at Camp Altitude since 2012. The camp, which also includes music, arts and crafts, cooking, hiking, science, drama and media, is in its sixth year and will be held this year July 14-25. Special needs children also have a home at Camp Ronald McDonald, which provides a variety of activities, including swimming and other sports for campers regardless of their abilities. The fully-accessible residential camp is set on 35 acres at Eagle Lake and has been hosting campers each summer since 1992. The camp is a project of Ronald McDonald House Charities, in partnership with the Lassen National Forest. Nine cabins house the campers and fully-accredited program specialists to provide a traditional summer camp experience — Camp Ronald features an amphitheater, campfire pit, beach volleyball court, sand pit, accessible dock and water front, basketball court and grass playing field — for kids with all levels of abilities and physical and social challenges. “It’s just like a traditional summer camp for kids on the lake,” said Patrick Diffley, a Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern California Board Member and father of a child with special needs. “It’s pretty impressive.” Different camps run all summer long (June 7-Aug. 13). The schedule and further information can be found at www.campronald.org. ✪ Parents of children with special needs won’t have college recruiters lined up to talk to their kids after attending a camp or clinic this year. But five-star kids can be developed through special offerings that cater to the unique challenges and needs of kids throughout Northern California.

REACH THE

NEXT LEVEL Hardwood Palace home to many basketball training opportunities now through summer

T

he game of basketball is easy. Dribble. Pass. Shoot. Score. So why do many children struggle? Micah Lancaster of I’m Possible Training says, “self-inflicted damage.” Too often, Lancaster saw players want to shoot a 3-pointer without being able to make a layup, or even knowing the fundamentals of shooting. Kids want to be able to dribble through their legs, without being able to dribble with either hands. Kids want to steal every ball, but don’t know what a defensive stance or defensive slide is. They want to be part of a winning team, without knowing how to be a team player first. With that in mind, Next Level Basketball Training was created to teach the youth the proper fundamentals of the game so that they can develop a love for the game, and develop self confidence that they can play and compete at any level. Hardwood Palace in Rocklin is now a home for that training. It will be hosting the I’m Possible 2-Day Spring Break Clinic on April 2-3 for boys and girls grades 3-12. And then in June, the I’m Possible Separation Team Summer Camp will be at the Hardwood Palace, again for boys and girls in grades 3-12. I’m Possible Training camps are some of the most sought camps in the world, innovative and designed around the concept of making every player feel like they are alone in the gym. Can’t make either camp? Hardwood Palace also holds I’m Possible Complete Player year-round training. Offering instruction once a week or up to three days a week. Check out all the possible options at: nextlevelbballtraining.com/camps ✪ All copy and photos provided by Placer Valley Tourism.

NorCal Dirt Dogs softball showcase Since the club’s creation in 2007, the NorCal Dirt Dogs have participated in many National Tournaments, attended some of the best college showcases and have had many players recruited to play collegiate. The Dirt Dogs will be holding their annual College Showcase Camp, a skills clinic for 14U and 16U players that’s followed by a showcase tournament attended by college scouts. This year’s event will take place at Foskett Park in Lincoln on September 11-13. The 2014 camp showcased over 100 athletes. The camp lasts five hours and covers the following: pitching and catching, infield and outfield sessions, and hitting and base running. This year’s camp will be slightly different from previous ones because it will take place on a Friday, September 11, and will then be immediately followed by the two-day showcase tournament for both the 14U and 16U Division. If you would like to see which teams will be featured in the weekend showcase and times and locations, you can check online at asatournaments.com. Please keep in mind that teams will not be posted until that same month. For more information on the Dirt Dogs and the event, visit norcaldirtdogs.com ✪
