here are many positive aspects to playing any type of sport. Playing sports ensures adequate physical growth development as well as psychological development. As we all know, sports also help to maintain a healthy lifestyle and promote socialization amongst children. If promoted in a positive and fun way and not forced by parents or instructors, sports can be pleasant and enjoyable for most children. Sports activities should be an integral part of our children’s lives. Children that play sports from an early age can acquire a wealth of motor skills development that will be valuable for a lifetime. The result of learning and developing the coordination, agility and balance abilities will indirectly help children to stay healthy, as they grow older. Therefore, children that are involved in sports from a young age will have a greater advantage compared to those who have never been involved in physical activities. An inactive lifestyle from an early age can increase the risk of weight gain and obesity, which can lead to many other health issues. What is the Right Sport Choice? Depending on the type of sport, children may start playing at a very young age. Many times parents will force their kids to play in a sport they feel is best for them or it may simply be because the child shows a natural athletic ability. For example, in soccer children may start playing as young as 4 years old and other sports as young as 6 years old. So what is the best sport? As parents, we want to choose the best sport activity for our children. Do we choose a sport that is best for our children and one they will be inclined to succeed? Or do we choose a sport that helps us parents relive our younger years through our children? At a younger age, it is most important that children be involved in a sport that is not only fun, but also encourages the development of the entire physical and physiological growth. When we talk about children 4-6 years old, we should choose activities that are fun and promote a general development concept. Because children at this age do not yet have the mental capacity to understand specific tasks, it is much easier for them to learn while having fun. In fact, until the age of 6, any type of sports should promote general physical activities to instill new types of development and in turn promote a healthy lifestyle. Only once they reach the adolescence years do children have the opportunity to gradually develop various technical skills. As they get older, children will have the opportunity to concentrate on each of their individual talents. There will be those who gravitate towards running, tennis, soccer, or a variety of different sports. For most children, after the age of 6, the development of coordination, agility and physical abilities show growth and will give them the confidence to approach different sports in an easier way. As parents and instructors we must continue to promote activities that allow the harmonious development and growth of the whole body. How often do children at this younger age play sports? It

is safe to say that an average of 2-3 times per week is within the norm. However, if children participate in multiple physical activities, the participation may vary. It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure that activities proposed by the sport organization and its instructors are fun and promote the physical development of their child as a whole. The activities cannot be boring or our children will risk losing interest and it can be harmful for many years to come. As parents we are encouraged to talk with the instructors and make sure we understand what the objectives are. The instructor is an important figure and also a role model. The instructor becomes a reference point for the child. Up to six years of age, children need a simple, yet energetic teacher who is committed, has a positive attitude and possesses enough knowledge to instill the necessary fundamentals. Moreover, after six years of age, as children begin to grow, the instructor continues to play a decisive role. The task of motivating children becomes necessary during training sessions. The instructor should find it necessary to stop and address any mistakes to ensure the proposed tasks are executed the correct way. • Dance: Exceptional structure of basic motor skills development. The learning of motor skills patterns draws a huge advantage as our children get older. The coordination required to keep up with the rhythm of the music is something not to underestimate. • Baseball and Softball: Slower sport but also full of motor skills development and always practiced outside. One of the main developments is hand-eye coordination. • Beach Volley: Great sport. Not very practical for young children. • Soccer: It is one of the most popular sports in the world and not slowing down anytime soon in the US. Children can start as early as 4 years old, and if taught correctly, it has an advantage for motor skills development such as foot-eye coordination, hand-eye coordination, etc. • Football and Rugby: This sport is often considered too physical by parents, but very good for motor skills development such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, falling, rolling and, also just like soccer, a team sport. • Gymnastic – Artistic: Another great sport where kids can develop many motor skills and push the body to its full development. • Hockey - Lacrosse: Many movements involved in these sports. Lots of running, hand-eye coordination and balance. • Basketball: Good sport for motor skills development such as running, jumping and agility. Also a team sport. ummer vacation is over and it’s time for new backpacks, new clothes and, yes, a new array of “bugs” that can bring us the first colds and tummy aches of the fall. It is a pretty well documented fact that a few weeks into the new school year sees an increase in infections that sicken children, their parents and teachers. You could call it summer’s last ‘gift,’ as students return from out-of-area vacation spots and new students arrive from different parts of the country or world, all bringing new germs and the potential for colds and infections. As in many sports, a good offense is the best defense; so plan ahead to ward off as many germs as possible to stay healthy. Along with using common sense about how to stay healthy, add these steps: Get your flu shot. According to Dr. Jessica Thomas, family medicine physician for Intercoastal Medical Group, get your flu shot as soon as it becomes available to establish immunity early on. Flu shots are given to infants from 6 months of age and up, and now there is a “no needle” option for kids 2 years old and older! The vaccine can be delivered directly into the nostril with a quick puff, sparing kids – and parents – the drama of the needle. Thorough hand washing provides a great defense. Infectious germs of all kinds can last a surprisingly long time on many common surfaces – door handles, cell phones, computer key boards, light switches – just to name a few. Teach your kids the proper technique for thoroughly washing their hands with warm water, soap and getting between the fingers – not just a quick rinse with cold water. “Good hand washing can go a long way in killing germs and protecting us from colds and infections,” says Dr. Thomas. “And, if you are sick, stay home!” Establish and maintain good sleep habits. Coming off of summer vacation, when schedules and routines are relaxed

and bed times and wake up times much later, can play havoc with the start of the school. Start at least a week before the school bell rings for the first time with adjusting yourself and your kids to getting to bed earlier. “Not getting enough sleep can weaken your immune system and leave you more vulnerable to getting sick,” notes Dr. Thomas. “Being well rested helps keep you healthy; it’s as simple as that.” Movement is Medicine. Staying active also is key to staying healthy, says Dr. Thomas, who worked with a sports medicine specialist during her medical training and is herself, a sports enthusiast and participant in local swimming and running competitions. “Staying physically active keeps our immune system strong and keeps us healthier and less susceptible to illness,” she explains. “Movement – however it is done – really is some of the best medicine there is.” Get vaccinated, kids and parents! The normal childhood vaccines are important for the health of your child, your family and the population. Schools will ensure that your children’s vaccines are up to date, but parents (and grandparents) need to check the status of theirs as well, advises Dr. Thomas. “Adults need booster shots for the Tetanus-Diptheria and Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, especially if it’s been more than 10 years since you’ve had a booster,” she says. Check with your primary care physician to determine if you are due for an updated vaccine.

I was sitting on Turtle Beach, Siesta Key, on a beautiful summer day. He caught my attention, the teenage boy who grabbed his surfboard and ran out to the gulf waters, carefree and young. As I watched him, I thought he was identical to my long lost first love. I flashed back to 1976. That summer, we talked about love, about going to college in Florida, about our future. Although it had been 38 years since that time, I wondered how his parents were, how his siblings had grown, and then I remembered. His sister mentioned they had retired in Sarasota. Perhaps that is why I connected with this young surfer. This freeze frame was a reminder of the excruciating pain I felt, as a 14-year old, when my 16-year-old boyfriend was gone instantly in a motorcycle accident. It’s amazing how grief can rear its ugly head, or at least revisit you. Grief has many different faces. For me, I tried to skip the stage of shock and go right to bargaining. I believed that somehow I could bring him back to life, if I was just “good” enough. However, over time, I realized that he was gone forever and I had to move on. Yet, every one of us must face some form of grief in our short time on this planet. How about you? What has grief looked like for you? Undoubtedly, the worst imaginable form of grief is the loss of a child or sibling. Or we grieve the passing of a parent. As one who lost both parents at a relatively young age, the pain is still fresh in my mind, as I remember sharing the last moments with both, though 25 years apart. Grief also takes the form of a shattered dream, unrealized losses. Sometimes we don’t allow ourselves the time or tools to handle our loss. As a life coach, I meet with clients about all kinds of life issues, and inevitably, some of their core issues boil down to some type of loss or abandonment, which they have failed to grieve.

While each of us must face one form of grief or another in our lifetime, I have some good news! Grief can actually be good, or at least normal, and working through that grief can help us grow. Looking on the other side of those losses, twenty plus years later, I’ve had the privilege of helping others take the next steps toward acceptance. ll children learn in different ways and at different rates. They have their own personalities, work habits and listening styles. To help students to grow and learn new skills, teachers must get to know as much as they can about each child’s likes and dislikes. No one knows more about these things than you, their parent! The best way to get involved with your child’s education is at the parent teacher conferences. Why Are Parent Teacher Conferences Important? Parent teacher conferences present an excellent opportunity to find out how your child is adjusting to the new school year and to get to know their teacher or teachers. It is also a great way to gain insight about the teacher’s and school’s expectations for your child. Teachers don’t want to put parents on the spot, they just want to discuss how to help students do their best in school. Another reason why parent teacher conferences are important is that you can learn about your child’s behavior in school. It also gives the teacher the opportunity to learn more about your child and your family activities outside of school. Preparing For the Conference Teachers will probably come prepared with work samples, test scores and ideas to help your child grow in school; you should get come prepared too. Talk to your child before conferences. Ask them about their likes and dislikes and why. Also ask them if there is anything they would like you to talk to their teacher about. Make sure you make note of any other questions you want to ask while in the conference so you don’t forget. Some good questions are: • Is my child working up to his or her ability? • Does my child participate in class discussions and activities? • Has my child missed any classes other than ones I contacted the school about? • Have you noticed any sudden changes in the way my child acts such as squinting, tiredness or moodiness that may be a sign of a physical problem?

During the Conference Always remember start the conference off right. Be on time. If you are a working parent and can’t meet at the allotted time ask the teacher and try to set up a time to meet that works for both of you. Don’t feel you have to ask every single question. It is a good idea to ask your most important question first in case time runs out before you have a chance to discuss them all. Be prepared to talk and listen during the conference. Be open-minded to suggestions from the teacher. Take notes of specific suggestions so that you can follow up and discuss them with your child. What goes on at home affects how well a child does and behaves at school. Be sure to tell the teacher about any separation/divorce, family illness, new baby, deployment, change in work schedule, death of love one or pet, etc. Also, if the teacher says something you don’t understand, don’t hesitate to ask questions. There are a lot of acronyms for programs in the school system. After the Conference After the conference, talk to your child about what was discussed, both challenges and successes. If an action plan was developed between you and the teacher, get started on that right away and stick with it. Communication is key. Stay in contact with the teacher on a regular basis. s you head into a new school year it’s time to consider what type of activities will help your child develop their talents, character, intellectual skills, social skills and athletic skills. As the director of Drama Kids of Manasota, I get asked all kinds of questions by parents as to whether Drama is right for their child. These range from the parent of the child who memorizes all the lines from T.V. shows and dances around the living room whenever “Let it Go” plays, to the parent who tells me their child has speech delays, is extremely shy and has trouble making friends. To those parents and every parent in between I always say wholeheartedly, “Yes, drama education is going to be perfect for your child!” Self-Expression Learned Through Drama Instills Life Skills: When children participate in a drama class they learn more than just memorizing lines and acting. A good drama program will be a mix of structured script learning, voice development, improvisation and movement. As your child learns these skills they will develop self- confidence; and not just self-confidence about “acting,” but about communicating in general. Think about your own experience having to give a speech at a meeting or getting up in front of a group to talk about a topic, or going to a job or college interview. In acting class students are given opportunities to speak with clarity and expression which helps them with presentation skills such as oral book reports, science fair, and student government. Through drama exercises and games drama nurtures spontaneity and helps students think on their feet and use their imaginations. They also learn empathy and to understand how others feel. They identify emotions and have to express them. This is so important so that they learn, for example, to speak up if they are faced with an uncomfortable peer situation such as bullying or having to defend themselves or a friend. The more they practice it, the more confident they become and the easier it becomes. Building Team Work: Some children naturally enjoy working with others while others prefer to work independently. In drama class you get to do both. However, when you work with others in drama you are sharing creative ideas and EVERYONE gets to participate – not just the confident few. All children get to put their ideas in and cooperate to create something that everyone contributes to. Those that gravitate toward being leaders get that opportunity, but also in a good drama program, leaders should switch so that everyone gets a turn. That way, those that are used to dominating have to learn to collaborate and those that are used to sitting on the sidelines

learn to lead. These drama activities can be excellent for children who are not so good at fitting in or putting themselves forward in a social group. All creative ideas are welcomed and encouraged so that children feel positive about their contribution, thus leading to a sense of self-worth. Performace-Based Program Versus SkillBased Program: Some drama classes put on many productions throughout the year while others may only perform one or none. The emphasis can vary from program to program. What is important is to ask yourself what you want your child to get out of this experience. What parent doesn’t like to see their kid on stage? The costumes are adorable and the excitement at having an audience to show leads to great anticipation. In a performance-based program the children work with a teacher/director who will give them a script or parts to work on for a certain amount of time and then they perform for an audience. Most instructional time is spent on rehearsal, blocking, and memorizing. In a skills-based program the end result isn’t necessarily a big show. The class might do a presentation showing the skills they’ve learned or do a small show for only a portion of the program. The children will spend each week developing skills by using different materials, exercises and scripts. This allows for less down time and also is not as timedemanding as a performance-based program. Whatever program you decide to pursue for your child, make sure to inquire as to the background of the teacher, the structure and size of the class and what kind of participation and costs are required up front. The Impact of Drama as an Activity for Your Child: All children can benefit from the wonderful skills learned in drama and they can carry those skills through life and put them to use in many areas. Drama nourishes the imagination. It instills creativity and helps children “think outside the box.” Drama allows children to make friends with other children that are not in their usual circuit and it helps them build compassion for others. They learn respect by working with teachers/ directors and fellow actors toward a common goal. Drama also teaches patience and commitment. Children learn through patience and perseverance they can produce something wonderful. They learn that hard work leads to gratification. Whether your child would enjoy drama as a hobby or desires to become the next big Disney star, being given the opportunity to participate in an established and reputable drama program will be sure benefit them throughout their life. s the summer is ending, we are all gearing up for the beginning of a new school year. For two months, our children have been away from the confines of the classroom. They have, for all intents and purposes, been on a more flexible, laid back schedule. Rules have been different and activities more of their own choosing rather than a teacher’s. It is time to start looking towards and planning for the new year ahead. As I write this article I remember an old saying, “all I really need to know I learned in kindergarten.” Being a former kindergarten and first grade teacher, and now a preschool teacher, I ponder this statement. I wish I could say that I agree with this, however, at this time in our world, I would change that statement to, “all I really need to know I learn every day!” Reading, writing and arithmetic may be the core learning areas in school but we mustn’t forget character education. As I mentioned in my past articles, parents, not just teachers, are our children’s educators. So just what is character education? Character education is educating people to understand and care about the world around them. The hope is that our children’s teachers will help promote and model positive traits such as honesty, kindness, respect, responsibility and tolerance. We cannot totally rely on the school, however, to do this. We as parents need to do this as well. One of the best things we can do to prepare our children for the upcoming year is to create an environment of caring. We need to teach our children the character traits by modeling. • Honesty – be as honest with your child as you can. Don’t respond, “Because I said so.” Explain why you want them to do something. • Respect – listen to your child. Slow down and listen to all the people around you. • Responsibility – show your child what responsibility is. Let them see you doing your chores. If they see you putting dishes in the dishwasher or writing emails to clients, they will learn they can put toys away and to do their homework. • Kindness – let a person go before you in line at the grocery store. When your child observes this type of action, they may allow a friend to go before them when lining up at school. • Tolerance – embrace all people! One of the most important traits of all may be tolerance. If

we can teach our children this trait they will be on their way to a stronger and more positive school experience. Tolerance is accepting people for who they are and treating them how you would want to be treated. If your children see you speak kindly to everyone, even those of a different race or religion, they will do the same. Give your children the chance to experience different cultures and traditions. Learn about these differences together. Teach your children about your own family traditions with pride. Have them share their traditions with others. Talk about how special it is that all people have differences, but similarities too. We may look different, have different beliefs, but we all have feelings. The classroom is like a melting pot; a place where people who look, act and believe different things come together each day. The goal is to create a safe environment to coexist and grow. We as parents can help prepare our children for this experience. Continue modeling the character traits every day. Along with this modeling, choose to be involved in programs, go to movies, play games and read stories that value differences.
