Dear Readers, Happy July 4th to all! The Sports & Activities Directory has designed new sponsorship packages for local, regional or national businesses that would like to help support our youth in active, healthy lifestyles. We are very proud to announce our first ever issue sponsor for the Davie, Cooper City & Southwest Ranches Sports & Activities Directory. This Back to School issue is brought to you by Tag USA Gymnastics of Weston! On behalf of our readers, we thank you for your sponsorship to help make this issue possible! This issue has been created to help you fill in the rest of the summer days and ease you into ‘Back to School’ mode. So, hopefully you’ll find a thing or two to do in the pages ahead to keep your family entertained and to make young minds active again. I also hope you are managing to keep your cool during these hot steamy months in Florida. For the longest time, I believed I wanted to move from South Florida to escape the summer and enjoy the seasons, but the longer I’m here in Florida, the more I realize my fortune. Here we have coastal breezes and the crystal blue ocean to go dip our toes in. It’s really only 3-4 months of stormy and scalding days, and the rest of the year leaves us to be envied. There is plenty to do here in South Florida, even on the hottest days or the stormiest afternoons. Are you running out of ways to entertain the kids? Is “I’m bored” becoming a common phrase in your household? Are you getting tired of picking up after your kids all-day and struggling to keep your home organized? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you may want to take a look though our camp section in the directory. Contrary to popular belief, there ARE still camps available to your children, last minute, as it may seem. You really do not have to venture too far from your own doorstep to enjoy what is left of summer; there is a myriad of fun places offering entertainment for the entire family. Check out the content of this issue to discover some of the fine establishments and businesses geared to assist you in whatever your family or personal needs may be. Let’s not forget that registration for many of the fall season sports; dance and other recreational activities will be starting in August/September. Now is the time to ask your child what they’re excited to do and get them enrolled, don’t wait until the last minute when we are already caught up in the homework wars. And, of course, remember to get those health visits squared away, be sure to take a look through our Family Health directory to find some of the best qualified medical professionals in town. I hope you enjoy this Back to School issue featuring all of your local school’s updated information, letters from Broward County School Board members, articles from the schools themselves, and tips on easing your child back into the new academic year. Looking forward to seeing you around town,

Nikki Reading Publisher

Once again, it’s time to talk about happenings in Cooper City! Hello, I’m Greg Ross, Mayor of Cooper City.

SWIMMING POOL SAFETY: Living in Florida allows us the benefit of swimming in a backyard pool or to enjoy the use of a community center pool. Along with this benefit, comes the necessity of assuring that our children are protected. Tragically, many young children drown in backyard swimming pools each year. Cooper City pools must be secured with appropriate barriers such as surrounding your pool with a 5-foot fence or barrier with a self-latching gate. Place a safety cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use. Consider the installation of a pool alarm that goes off if anyone enters the pool. Never allow children to swim alone and be certain they are supervised at all times. If we all maintain a safe environment around our swimming pools, we will have a safe and fun-filled summer. Everyone, whether you own a pool or not, should be trained in CPR. Cooper City’s BSO Fire/Rescue Department provides CPR training classes. If you are interested in attending a class, please call 954-432-8905. “SAFERBY4”: Cooper City, along with several Cities in Broward County, have adopted a Resolution supporting and encouraging the collective efforts of municipalities through the “SAFERBY4” Initiative to reduce preventable child deaths due to drowning and sleep habits. The emphasis of this Initiative is not only on lifesaving information promoting children’s swimming lessons and pool safety, but encouraging cities to promote important information on safe sleep for children 4 and under alone on their back in a crib. HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS: As we approach this year’s hurricane season, we must all assure that our families are protected. Check your disaster supplies and replace or restock as needed. The recommended amount of water on hand should be one gallon per person for 3 days and a 3 day supply of non-perishable foods. Don’t forget the essentials for your pets, as well as a week’s supply of necessary medications. Please assure that your gasoline tanks are filled, as pumps may not be operational. Make arrangements to close the hurricane shutters on your home, should you not be able to do so yourself. Cooper City seniors should be aware that CERT will assist those in need of this service. Please call 954-432-8905 ahead of time to place your name on a list. Assure that flashlights and lanterns are equipped with new batteries. It’s always good practice to have cash on hand should your bank’s services not be operational. In the event you are evacuated, it’s important that you bring all medications and copies of personal documents along with you. Remember, it’s much better to be prepared prior to a storm, than to wish we had been prepared after the storm. CODE RED: Cooper City keeps its residents and businesses informed of emergencies and other time-sensitive information through CodeRED, a high-speed emergency notification solution provided by Emergency Communications Network. Cooper City will also use CodeRED to keep you informed of emergency information that may impact your safety by sending you telephone calls, text messages and emails. Messages may regard evacuations, police activity, Amber and Silver Alerts, missing children, boil water alerts or other information that you are asked to take immediate action or precautions for. To sign up for CodeRED, simply go onto the City Website, www.coopercityfl.org, then click onto the CodeRED information you will see on the left side of the Homepage. REMEMBRANCE WALKWAY ENGRAVED BRICK PROGRAM: Cooper City has established a Remembrance Walkway Engraved Brick Program at Memorial Park, which is overseen by the Public Works Department. This program provides an affordable and lasting memory to commemorate a special person, event or occasion by having a memorial brick engraved with your personalized message and installed at Memorial Park. Two brick sizes are available and installed 4 times per year. This program not only provides an affordable and lasting method to commemorate a special person or event, but additional proceeds will go to the City’s Tree Preservation Program to help plant and preserve trees in Cooper City. To obtain additional information about this program, please contact Public Works at 954-434-2300 or go to the City Website www.coopercityfl.org. Thank you for affording me the opportunity to provide you with subjects of importance to Cooper City residents and for allowing me the honor to serve as your Mayor!

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranc hes Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 12 | July – September 2015

Hello Davie,

12

I hope everyone is having a great summer. The Town of Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department has a terrific line-up of recreation programs and special events for all ages to enjoy during the months of July, August and September. Please take the time to review a complete listing which can be found inside this issue of the Sports and Activities Directory. Before I highlight several special events, I want to tell you about the Town’s recent commitment to join the Broward County #SaferBy4 Campaign. This campaign has one major objective and that is to reduce preventable child and infant deaths for children under four years of age. Over the past years, too many children have died before their fourth birthday due to unsafe sleeping practices or by falling into swimming pools and other bodies of water. The Town has established a number of initiatives to educate Davie residents about these two major issues. One initiative, recently started by our Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department, is to offer swimming classes, called Mommy and Me, for children age 6 months – 3 years old. These classes are held at the Pine Island Park pool and have been so successful that the Department has added additional sessions for the summer. If your children have not gone through a water safety class or a swimming lesson program and they are 6 months or older, please consider placing them into the Town’s swimming program. For more information on swimming lessons, please see page 43. There are several great special events planned this summer for your enjoyment! You won’t want to miss this year’s Independence Day Fireworks and Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 4th! There is a full day of activities planned with youth activities starting at 10:00 am at the Pine Island swimming pool. The Fire Department will be spraying foam at the pool for children to enjoy at 11:00 am. At 4:00 pm the evening events start with a DJ, family games, food trucks, arts and craft vendors and new and exciting bounce houses for the youth. At 6:30 pm, the Town Council members and I will serve traditional birthday cake to celebrate our Independence and starting at 7:00 pm, “The Relyx” will entertain you with two hours of classic rock music. The day will then conclude with our always spectacular fireworks display starting at 9:00 pm! Don’t forget to attend our monthly Concerts in the Park series at the Old Davie School. On Thursday, July 9th, come enjoy the sounds of “Classic Rock Therapy” starting at 6:00 pm. There will be no concert in August, but on Thursday, September 10th come enjoy “Shadow Creek”, a fantastic Country Band! On Saturday, July 25th the Annual Downtown Hoedown will once again be held at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. You will not want to miss live performances by the South Florida Cloggers, who have been on America’s Got Talent several times, or the many contestants who will be participating in the 3rd Annual “Davie Idol” singing contest. This September will bring a brand new event to the Town of Davie and the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Come join me as we celebrate the Festival of Americas in partnership with Joana Bueno Productions. This one-day event, scheduled for Saturday, September 26th, will feature an International Bull Riding Rodeo and a Brazilian Country Western Concert, along with many international food and craft vendors associated with countries from North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. It will be a day and evening of great fun with lots of activities for the entire family. The Professional Bull Riding Rodeo will feature top international athletes competing against each other, while representing their respective countries. Finally, when looking through the Sports and Activities Directory remember, whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, your Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Creating a Generation of Financially Healthy Children

ealthyStarts was founded to assist parents in creating a generation young of adults financially able to meet most of life’s challenges. Their team of experienced financial professionals understands that since every family is unique, it is essential to design a program tailored to fit those needs. The team at WealthyStarts believe the cornerstone of any sound financial plan is a debt free college education. They believe no one should graduate college with a mountain of student loan debt. During your consultation you will learn about the intricacies of programs such as Florida PrePaid plans and 529 College plans, as they will explain both the advantages and disadvantages these programs. Considering that parents often utilize these plans, WealthyStarts will explain the most common misconceptions about these plans and help you to avoid costly and common mistakes that could impact your child’s ability to obtain additional funding, academic scholarships and other resources. You will also learn how the parental assets and assets of your children will impact financial aid and how to avoid common mistakes which so often disqualify children from additional scholarship and grant programs. Additionally, they teach you how to maximize your child’s financial aid options addressing both Need and Merit based aid. They will design a program that will best utilize these plans as part of your an overall financial strategy, keeping in mind time and budget constraints. They will assist you with financial strategies that will build a dynamic and flexible program that will carry your child through life.

By John Knobel

Your child will have funds for weddings, home purchases and even retirement. WealthyStarts uses the most advanced software in the industry alongside over 100 years of combined financial experience to analyze your current financial situation and goals to help you help your children attain financial independence. Included in their report is an explanation and calculation of your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), Aid Eligibility Report, college cost projection report as well as current rates, graduation rates and trends and the invaluable “What if Reports?” These reports will illustrate the largest misconception of all “I make too much money and my child will not be eligible for aid.” However, they will illustrate the different type of Need and Merit based Financial Aid available and how financial aid varies from school to school. WealthyStarts will show you how to find, secure and lock in the money for your child’s education regardless of your income levels or assets. WealthyStarts will educate parents on how to properly allocate assets so they will maximize financial aid and scholarships, not hinder them. The WealthyStarts checkup can either validate your existing plan in place as a good one or offer alternatives that will ensure your child has the best chance for maximum financial aid. REMEMBER: TIME IS YOUR ENEMY!! Too many parents procrastinate until what would have been a relatively painless task becomes a larger problem. hen World War II and the Korean War ended, soldiers stationed abroad came home and put away their duffel bags, went back to work, and most never talked about it again. 60 years later, the American public built a $200 Million WWII Memorial, and in 1995 the Korean Memorial was built. By the time these memorials were built, the majority of the veterans that served had passed away and were never able to see the Memorials that were built for them. Less than 3% of those WWII and Korean War veterans, who are still with us, have ever been to see these Memorials. Today, with the perseverance and dedication of local Honor Flight Volunteers, these heroes are able to visit our Nation’s capital in a manner upholding the dignity and grace these soldiers deserve and finally get the “Homecoming” that the majority of theses American heroes never received. Earl Morse, a retired Air Force Captain and Physicians Assistant from Ohio founded Honor Flight in 2005. At the time, Captain Morse personally flew veterans two to three at a time to visit the Memorials that were built in their honor. Honor Flight Network has grown to 138 hubs across the country and has flown over 120,000 troops all at no cost to the veteran. Honor Flight South Florida was co-founded by Director Ryan Paton who, along with his board of 12 other volunteers, works diligently to ensure the integrity of Honor Flight is upheld in the South Florida area. To date, Honor Flight South Florida, which began just over two years ago and covers half of Palm Beach, and all of Broward, Dade and Monroe Counties, has completed six flights in 2 years. Paton explained that due to health concerns, the veterans are unable to fly if it is too cold or too hot, leaving only

a small window to fly in the fall or spring. Honor Flight focuses on WWII veterans as their generation is quickly diminishing at a rate of approximately 640 veterans a day. In a recent South Florida flight, a 99-year-old veteran flew on this “one last mission.” Honor Flight South Florida also accepts Korean War and Vietnam applications but with priority given due to age or terminal illness. Veterans participating in Honor Flight have a long, but exciting day ahead of them. Most flights are in the air before morning traffic even begins. Everything needed is donated by caring individuals and local businesses. Recently, a group from Boca Raton took a bus donated by Corporate Coaches of Ft. Lauderdale to the Miami International Airport. Along the way, their police escort seamlessly changed from Palm Beach to Broward and then to Miami. At 4:30am, they arrived at the airport with patriotic fanfare. By 6:30am, they were in the air, enroute to D.C. During the flight, a volunteer conducts “Mail Call” through the plane’s intercom, in sighting memories of Mail Call in the service. As soldiers’ last names are individually announced, they are given personalized packages with letters hailing from around the country, written by family, friends, students and most recently the employees of Miami International Airport who came through with 2,600 individual letters made out to each veteran. The letters are a poignant moment in the soldiers’ journey. Veteran Frank Oliva, who participated in a flight earlier this year, stated he was so moved by his letters that he wished to be buried with them. After landing in D.C., grateful well-wishers greeted the participants as they deplaned and boarded buses. A D.C. police escort enabled them to attend five different

day of their life” and at no cost to the veteran. Significant support has also come from local airports, TSA and airlines. Paton is pleased to see how the airports support the veterans and Honor Flight. He was taken aback when 25 of the top, highest ranking, airport officials at MIA came to a meeting and wanted to know what they can do to make it better. Paton explains, “The Miami-Dade Aviation Department, BCAD, TSA at both airports, BSO and the Miami Dade Police department have been incredibly accommodating. They allow us to do so much and go way beyond the call of duty for our veterans, we are extremely grateful for the service of the MIA and FLL community.” In May of this year, Honor Flight became the first domestic flight of the new Eastern

Airlines. Honor Flight South Florida has also chartered planes from Spirit Airlines. Again, Paton was impressed with the support and respect given to these American heroes. “Eastern and Spirit did such an unbelievable job for us. The staff of Spirit was so good to our veterans. Eastern is now doing the same for us out of Miami.” Honor Flight and their tireless efforts ensure our nation’s heroes are able to fulfil their wish of visiting the WWII memorial in the heart of the nation for which they valiantly served. For more information about how you can nominate a veteran, apply to be an escort or for flight dates to become a part of the Homecoming crowd, please visit www.HonorFlightSouthFlorida.org.

memorials in a short amount of time and fly back that night. Ryan Paton is appreciative of work done by the Honor Flight organization in prior years; “Days in D.C. are already perfectly set up from Honor Flight by those before us.” After returning to MIA, almost 3,000 people welcomed the troops home including bagpipers and 15 honor guards representing different law enforcement agencies. Honor Flight is the product of a community and nation that values those who have fought to protect our citizens. The organization is 100% volunteer and has no paid employees. Every penny of every donated dollar goes to the veterans, ensuring our vets have the best of everything they need for their journey. As Paton expressed, their goal is to “Give them the best

n 2014, 41 children lost their lives in Broward County, 9 due to drowning and an estimated 20 during sleep. Almost all of the deaths occurred to children under 4 years of age and were all completely preventable. To combat the ever-growing epidemic, The Florida Department of Children and Families recently launched their new public awareness campaign, #SaferBy4, in Broward County. The campaign is designed to make sure children reach their fourth birthday through the prevention of needless deaths among them. The two main focus components of the program are safe sleep practices for infants and drowning prevention. The most prevalent cause of death from unsafe sleep is accidental suffocation or strangulation.

There are 10 areas to be addressed to prevent accidental sleep related deaths: 1.

Always place your baby on his or her back for each and every sleep. 2. Place your baby to sleep alone in a crib, bassinet or packn-play on a firm mattress with a tight fitting crib sheet. 3. No pillows, toys, bumper pads, loose bedding or blankets in the baby’s crib. 4. Do not allow smoking around your baby. 5. Do not allow your baby to sleep in bed with you, other adults or children. 6. Your baby should sleep in the same room with you. 7. Do not allow your baby to overheat. Dress them as you would dress for the day. 8. Offer your baby a clean, dry pacifier when placing baby down for sleep. 9. Breastfeeding is best for your baby. It has many health benefits from mother and baby. 10. Make sure anyone caring for your baby knows that your baby only sleeps Alone on his or her Back in a Crib (follow the ABCs).

Education on water safety has never been more important. There are three layers of protection to prevent drowning: 1. 2.

3.

Supervision: Watching the water when a child is in the pool. Assign a “Water Watcher” to ensure that a responsible adult is supervising the child. Barriers: Children should never have accessibility to water without being accompanied by an adult. Have several barriers (in case one fails) to physically block a child from a pool. Barriers include door alarms, pool fences, selflatching gates, childproof locks, and pool covers. Emergency Response: Early activation of EMS, CPR, and Rescue Breathing can mean the difference in life or death. Keep a phone by the pool and learn CPR and Rescue Breathing.

The Town of Davie has joined the effort to ensure the safety of our residents and the prevention of needless deaths among our children. The Town’s first responders are currently completing in house training to perform Direct on Scene Education (D.O.S.E.) to provide education to parents or caregivers. While on calls at residences, if first responders notice a young child/infant in the house or a back yard pool, they will now have the training and tools necessary to assess sleeping conditions, pool barriers and safety practices and provide parents/caregivers with solutions to ensure the safety of their children within their home. Swim Lessons Save Lives. The Town of Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department has traditionally offered swim lesson beginning at the age of 3. In order to further the cause and assist in the prevention of infant and toddler deaths, we recently added new Mommy and Me Swim Lesson Classes for children age 6 months to 3 years old. Classes aim to introduce children to water and begin building a level of comfort in the water. The six, 30-minute lessons focus on elementary swimming skills, fun in the water and underwater exploration. Our American Red Cross Trained instructors work with parents and their children to teach them how to float, kick, blow bubbles, and hold their breath under water. Based on the success of the classes and our commitment to the safety of our children, we have added additional sessions to our schedule to accommodate the ever-increasing demand. Also, through a partnership with Swim Central, since October 2014, we have been able to teach over 1,000 Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st Grade children free water safety lessons at Pine Island and Betty Booth Pools. Over the past five years, in Broward County alone, there have been more than 200 child deaths reported to the Department of Children and Families. Almost half of these deaths were attributed to drowning or unsafe sleep practices and more than three-fourths of the children who died were ages 3 and under. Deaths from drowning and unsafe sleep are 100% preventable. You Can Make A Difference – Safety is everyone’s responsibility! #SaferBy4

IN ITS 20TH SEASON, DANCER’S GALLERY IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE DANCE STUDIO! D

ancer’s Gallery celebrated their 20th recital this year under the direction of Christie Stark. Since their debut back in 1996, they have grown to offer so much more than dance. Just over one year ago, Dancer’s Gallery moved into a brand new 10,000 sq. ft. state of the art facility in Cooper City, offering a large variety of dance styles, circus arts and music. Dancer’s Gallery has transformed into an all around performing arts campus. Dancer’s Gallery also offers the best after care program for performing arts in the area with free transportation from local schools and extended hours until 7:00 p.m. The after care program includes between 8-10 dance classes per week making it an incredible value. Homework help is included in the program and tutoring is available as well. All after care students have the opportunity to be a part of the Dancer’s Gallery annual Winter Showcase and the end of year recital. Dancer’s Gallery is proud to have one of the largest faculty of professionally working performers, which in part, has led to the creation of CAST: Career in the Arts School of Talent. CAST is an alternative to traditional education offering a full time performing arts curriculum alongside a virtual program for academics. CAST is for students in grades 5 through 12. Students are given several opportunities throughout the year to work with professional performers in

a variety of settings. This is a truly unique program allowing students to be immersed in the performing arts and receive real training towards a future career on or behind the stage. The studio is bursting with energy and excitement during the summer months and there is no better time to dance and perform. Dancer’s Gallery offers three unique programs in the summer. Lil’ Dancers is a part time camp for dancers ages 2 1⁄2 to 5. Dancer’s Gallery also offers a full time summer camp for ages 6 and up. Campers participate in production development from staging, set design and costuming to choreography, music and casting. Each session concludes with a production from our camper cast members and stage crew. In addition to the incredible programs offered in camp, intermediate to advanced dancers can enhance their camp experience while perfecting their technique during the Summer Intensive Program. This program is for the dancer that is seeking professional training experience with emphasis in technique. Dancer’s Gallery is THE place for performing artists of any age and level all year around. t is hard to believe that we are already at the end of another year, preparing again for summer. So much has happened in the 2014-2015 school year at Inna’s Hall of Fame: the expansion of our facilities, the opening of our Community Black Box Theater, the revamping of our programs, the participation in various festivals, and the countless hours of preparation for our End of Year Anti-Bullying showcases, like Annie, and Cipollino & the Garden of Colors, have really made the year fly by. Our school’s mission is to provide the highest caliber of artistic education to our students so that they may achieve their fullest potential as young artists. To achieve this, Ms. Inna Maor, owner and Executive Artistic Director at Inna’s Hall of Fame Performing Arts Conservatory, has established these five goals that we live by: • We provide a welcoming atmosphere to all students. Inna’s HoF is a place for any student who loves dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. No cliques. No elitism. No bullying. Just love of the arts and respect for all. • We are committed to providing an educational environment that fosters the artistic, intellectual, and personal growth of our students, enabling them to find their potential and achieve success as artists and citizens, inspiring them to be the leaders of tomorrow. • We are dedicated to ensuring that financial considerations are not a deterrent to the enrollment of the most talented young performing artists from the Cooper City, Davie, Pembroke Pines, and Hollywood areas. • We provide a collaborative work environment and fully involve our talented faculty members in the artistic and educational life of our community.

We will continue to elevate our educational and artistic standards, remaining responsive to changing conditions in the performing arts community. We are dedicated to building character and providing our students with essential life skills such as perseverance, discipline, tolerance, and creative thinking to name just a few. When internalized, these life skills will guide our students in their daily interactions with others. Unfortunately, many of these interactions can be hurtful and our students have to deal with various ‘battles’ on a day-to-day basis. Bullying is the number one cause of anxiety in their young lives. Bullying has become such a huge problem in our society that we at Inna’s Hall of Fame have dedicated this year to bringing awareness to this major social problem. In our various classes for music, dance, acting, and visual arts, as well as in our Aftercare program, our dedicated and committed staff help our students find a way to deal with issues that trouble them in and out of school. Artistic expression, open discussions, and a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere provide an ideal environment for young minds and bodies to heal, cope, and gain strength. Performing builds pride and self-esteem, which translates to stronger, happier children, building stronger, happier communities. The arts have that magic that brings people together. We at Inna’s Hall of Fame hope to give Cooper City and the surrounding areas of South Florida a special place, where that magic can happen. Next school year, come to one of our events at our Community Black Box Theater in Stirling Town Center and help us advocate for tolerance and peace in our communities. For more information on our programs, contact us at 954-237-6021 or www.innashof.com.

S

ince the early 1940s in the midst of the sparks of World War II, the national defense aviation program, now known as the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), was formed to educate and serve the United States. What started out as a way for skilled citizens to give back to their country eventually became a permanent supplementary organization to the U.S. Air Force and it has continued to feature thousands of valued Americans all over the U.S. ever since. The CAP has been recognized as a versatile organization that suits all ages and types of people and one of its greatest elements is its accessibility. Over 1,400 squadrons are located throughout the country and can be found in each state, and even better, in our own community. The Civil Air Patrol is outlined by three main goals consisting of aerospace education, cadet programs, and emergency services. Catered toward everyone in the community, both senior members and cadets are eligible for aerospace education. The aerospace education branch includes all aspects of aviation, from learning its history to actually flying a plane; this is providing an opportunity to cadets to discover the amazement of being capable of handling a real aircraft and for seniors to be able to fly with a purpose. Aerospace isn’t the only renowned aspect of the Civil Air Patrol, there’s also the CAP’s emergency services field, which makes up about 90% of the search and rescue services conducted by the Air Force in the entire United States. This branch includes aspects such as disaster relief, humanitarian efforts, and homeland security operations, and is well known for conducting such missions, often in support of the Red Cross. Only members 18 and up can be involved in these missions, however everyone involved is an enormous part of the safety in our country. The cadet programs, on the other hand, are focused on the youth and future of the nation. Meant for ages 12 to 21, this CAP goal was originally based around the idea of training future pilots. Today, the program is much more than that, teaching members aerospace education as well as providing them with leadership and career training. While each member has their own reason for joining, whether it is to prepare themselves for the military, to develop leadership skills, or just to become part of something bigger than themselves, everyone has the opportunity to grow as a student and as an individual and to follow their interests. Plus, they are able to go as fast or slow, through the ranks of membership as they would like. James Sullivan, a senior member since 2008 and Captain in the local squadron, is fully aware that “you get out what you put in” to the program. It requires time and energy to move forward, but you’ll be handsomely rewarded. Not only do cadets get the chance to educate themselves and give back to their city, but they also get to become involved with a whole new community of friends and mentors and they have fun with it, too. There is typically one big activity a

By Sarah Reading

month, which can include something like camping, picnics, field trips, and even learning to fly. These activities are not only incredible opportunities and fantastic memories for the cadets, but they are team and character building exercises for them. They learn new skills, gain new responsibilities, and begin new lifestyle habits. If you think they keep coming back for the camping, well, you may be partially right, but according to Susan Barnett, “What keeps them coming back, is that when they do come back every year, their responsibilities grow. And it’s amazing to see them mature as their responsibilities do.” One of the most impactful and visible examples of cadet growth is when they first fly a plane. “It’s really cool. I’ve flown on a plane before, but being in control of it is a whole other story.” Michael Reading, a relatively new cadet, has had the opportunity to fly twice now. “Flying has given him a whole new perspective on the bounds of his potential both physically and metaphorically. He can literally touch the sky!” says Michael’s mother. She is also amazed by the difference in her son’s character and the things he has done while a member at the Civil Air Patrol. “At first, I was nervous. Seeing your child sit in the front seats of an aircraft isn’t something you witness every day, but I’d never been more proud.” Flying is definitely one of the main attractions of the activities the CAP exposes their members to, not just because it’s an incredible experience, but because it is a fantastic example of a cadet’s progress and hard work. If you or your child is interested in the Civil Air Patrol, contact your local squadron by visiting their website, http://www.gocivilairpatrol.com.

This is their desire, this is what they do. It is 6:00am. They

50

are not sleeping, nor playing video games. “Who are they you ask? They are “ OUR” kids. As parents and coaches, we are all so proud of them. They are back for year two and stronger than ever. Fully inspired, fully trained, and for some, it’s their first time. We are talking about Triathlons. Swim-Bike-Run. Are you kidding? All in the same day? The answer is yes. These junior athletes are going to rock it at the Davie PAL Kids Triathlon. Preparation starts the day before as the athletes meet at Alex’s Bicycle Pro Shop in Davie. Rachael Wood has volunteered to do a pre-race clinic. Rachel is a three-time Ironman Kona podium winner and age group champion in 2002. Rachel goes over rules and the flow of the race. Last minute purchases for goggles, race belts, and for some, a new bike are made. It’s 7:45am Race Day; all the children are on the pool deck counting the seconds down until the race clock starts and last minute race strategies are being confirmed or ditched in the minds of these young athletes. At 8:00am sharp, the race starts. The children enter into the water individually at 10-second intervals. Once they swim their respective distances in the pool, they exit and run into what’s called T1. This is where they will change from swimming to biking. After peddling their hearts out, on a half a mile, 3-mile or 6-mile course, they enter into T2. They rack their bikes, take off their helmets, and start off on the final leg of the race. When I asked Alex Oleshansky what that feels like going from a long fast bike ride to a run he said, “It feels like knives are stabbing me in the backs of my legs, I want to stop, but I just run faster.” These kids have got one thing on their mind… that finish line. One thing that is noticed no matter how tired these kids are is when they are about 50

yards from the finish line they put on a sprint like Usain Bolt. They come across the finish line to the cheers from their family and friends and they are excited because they know they have accomplished something great. Each finisher receives a custom finisher’s medal and T-shirt just for competing. This year we were very fortunate to have a title sponsor support us. We asked Mr. Robert Lewin, the owner of 411 PAIN why he donated so generously to the Davie PAL Triathlon this year. “I’m fortunate enough to be able to give back to my own city. Giving kids the equipment to succeed in sports is a great way to show my support,” he explained. “The triathlon is an exciting event to both watch and participate in. It has gained popularity in the recent years and the PAL can use our support to help maintain interest in childhood athletics.” “The progress the kids make is so motivating,” says George Manekas Director of the Miami Kids Triathlon. He adds, “Kids really enjoy Triathlons for various reasons. It is an individual sport so there is no team and no coach telling you what to do. They put forth training effort and dedication similar to an adult.” We asked 16-time Ironman finisher Diane Calloway what he thinks of kids participating in these triathlons at such an early age. “I think it’s incredible for kids to start out at a young age. It teaches discipline and determination. If a child can grasp the concept of the true essence of what a triathlon is all about, it only makes them stronger as an adult, in Triathlons and life in general. The Davie PAL Triathlon races are for kids 5 years old to 17 years old. The next race is July 12 and then October 18, 2015. The Davie PAL started triathlons as a fundraiser for the PAL, which is a nonprofit 501(c)(3). Participants of the triathlons range from the beginners to very experienced triathletes.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DENTAL PROTECTION FOR ACTIVE KIDS By Dr. Sandra Brener

A

s a pediatric dentist, I often get emergency calls due to dental trauma. Every time I get one of those calls my first goal is to make sure there is not a concussion and then focus on providing comfort to the child since they are probably in pain. After the immediate care is done, there are always long term consequences of dental trauma. It is hard to explain how sad it is for the parents when they have to see their child suffering and the embarrassment the child feels when they lose a tooth. When the trauma happens on baby teeth, the consequences will last until about the age of 7, when the children lose their baby teeth and start getting their permanent teeth. But if the accident happens when the child already has the permanent teeth, the consequences are forever. Many times, dental trauma can be prevented. For the younger kids, we need to have our home as clear of sharp corners as possible and always be on the watch. For older kids that participate in contact sports, it is important to use proper fitting sports mouth guards. The fabrication of a Custom Fitted Sports Mouth Guard has a relatively low cost in comparison to the cost of treatment for the broken or lost permanent tooth. Here are some important facts on the use of Sports Mouth Guards: • It is estimated by the American Dental Association that Mouth Guards prevent approximately 200,000 injuries each year in high school and collegiate football alone. • The lifetime cost of repairing a tooth that is lost due to trauma is significant for restorative, endodontic, prosthodontics, implant, or surgical treatment(s) needs depending on the severity of the trauma. Traumatic dental injuries have additional indirect costs that include children’s hours lost from school and parent’s hours lost from work. • In 2005, The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation estimated the cost to treat

an avulsed permanent tooth and provide follow-up care is between $5,000 and $20,000 over a lifetime. • Vacuum custom Mouth Guards are superior to the store bought stock and boil and bite Mouth Guards because they have a much better fit, made from a mold of your mouth and are designed by a dentist. • The mouth guard works by “absorbing the energy imparted at the site of impact and by dissipating the remaining energy.” *McClelland C, Kinirons M, Geary L. A preliminary study of patient comfort associated with customized mouth guards. Br J Sports Med 1999 • A custom fabricated mouth guard helps prevent dental trauma and to an extent, concussion. • The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends mandating the use of properly fitted mouth guards in organized sporting activities that carry risk of Orofacial injury. “W

here did the time go?” “Is the world spinning faster?” “Can we just add a couple of extra hours to each day?” These are questions I seem to be asking myself on a regular basis. I find myself apologizing to friends for not having been in touch for so long, only to find that they are equally apologetic and have been just as busy. When did we become so consumed with so much that we barely find time to connect with friends, but even more so… with ourselves? Sometimes in order to be more productive, more efficient, a better mom, spouse or friend, it is necessary to step away from our tasks at hand every now and then and regroup. A lady had once raved to me about a spectacular 90-minute pedicure offered at Me Spa in Pembroke Gardens Mall. My initial reaction was “I don’t have time for a 90-minute pedicure! If I’m not painting my own nails, I like to walk into a salon and be done and dusted with mani/pedi within an hour! She insisted that this is not your regular pedicure and in fact deemed it as ‘life changing!’ Her passion and conviction convinced me to try it one time. I decided to take the plunge and indulge myself in a morning of ‘Me Time,’ I invited my close friend/associate to join me, not many are harder working and more deserving of ‘Me time’ than she. I called ahead and reserved a facial for us, and of course, we had to try the life-changing pedicure! The minute we walked through the door at Me Spa we are greeted with a sense of peace and relaxation. From the trickling waterfall and the elegant décor to the aroma that only a spa seems to emulate, the urge is to slowly exhale and feel the tension start to slip away. We were lead to an elegant, peaceful changing room/ restroom area, where we were supplied with plush robes to adorn ourselves in and then taken to our individual rooms for treatments. The esthetician first assessed my skin and then set to work while I relaxed and started to unwind to the quiet soothing music and aroma. 40 minutes or so later, I could actually feel the glow of my skin as I was made comfortable in a plush arm chair, neck roll fluffed up behind me, and my feet bathing in a delicious smelling soak. A cup of green tea was offered and well received, “Hmmm, I could get used to this Me Time!” I assumed this to be where my pedicure would take place, but no, the best was yet to come. As I entered the pedicure room, the words

came back to me “this is not your regular pedicure!” Instead of my previous experiences, with the massaging chairs close together and the buzz of chitchat and people talking on their phones, the atmosphere here was quite different. Each privately sectioned station is equipped with a fully reclining zero gravity lounge chair, (I swear it’s a magic chair!) With a cozy blanket, heated neck wrap & eye mask in place, we began with a detoxifying foot soak of certified organic Jojoba Oil & Epsom Salt. An expert therapist then reclined me and set to work on exfoliating, cleansing & hydrating my skin with a tri-functional sugar scrub, followed by a massage with an ultra-rich massage crème. 90 minutes later, I felt a gentle pat on my arm awaken me as my chair slowly returned upright. I looked down to see beautifully moisturized, soft skin with 10 perfectly polished toes. Now that… is a positively life changing pedicure!! I looked over in time to see my girlfriend just finishing up with her pedicure. What I saw made all the indulgence worth every second, all the stress completely gone from her face as she stretched and smiled the biggest of smiles. Remember, ‘Me Time’ is not just an indulgence, but also sometimes a necessity to help us reset, refocus and become more effective. ‘Me Time’ – because we’re worth it! Teaching Our Children to Work Hard By Dr. David Yudell

here are endless lessons to learn while growing up. Many of these lessons are social or maturational in nature. Children certainly need to navigate through the events they experience while attending school, participating on a sports team, or while learning how to make (and keep) friends. Within each of those areas there are many subtle decisions that must be made, mistakes to persevere, and lessons to be learned. This article will focus on one of those subtle areas that begin in childhood and extends throughout adulthood. Learning to work hard. Research conducted by Carol Dweck and Claudia Mueller, completed a study looking at the effects of praise on young students. Half were praised for working hard and the other half were praised for their ability or “smartness.” When given a set of problems, those praised for hard work performed 25% better than the “smart” group. (Heidi Grant Halvorson https://hbr.org/2011/11/the-trouble-with-bright-kids). The lesson taught from this and similar research is that to get the best effort and results out

of our children, we need to reinforce hard work rather than ability. The kind of feedback we share with young children has a major impact on their view of their abilities. When we tell our children that they are smart or gifted or a good student we are telling them that they have (or do not have) the ability to do well. The lesson we want them to learn is that their hard work was directly responsible for their success and give them the building blocks to learn to control their endeavors through effort. As a parent you can do this by helping your child to learn that studying, practice and work is what will most frequently lead to success. Become a model for your child’s endeavors. Praise them often for their effort, not their accomplishments. Offer immediate, positive feedback on what they are doing and you will see their success and most importantly, their belief that they can affect positive change in their lives build year after year. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. Please email me at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members: As Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), I am excited about the upcoming start of the 2015/16 school year. We are looking forward to welcoming all of our students back to class on Monday, August 24, 2015. Across our District, there are incredible learning opportunities in place for BCPS students. From our rigorous academic courses and nationally recognized magnet programs – to our fine arts programs, athletics, and extracurricular clubs and activities – there is truly something for everyone. Schools are focal points in the community – bringing families, neighbors, businesses and civic organizations together for the common goal of ensuring our students have the resources necessary to be successful, not only in their education, but as productive citizens of our county, state, nation and world. As the sixth largest school district in the country and the second largest in Florida, we are working hard every day to achieve our vision of “Educating Today’s Students to Succeed in Tomorrow’s World.” Our core mission is to provide quality instruction, utilize research-based strategies and best practices, and provide supportive learning environments to help all students reach their highest potential. As the first in my family to graduate from high school and college, I know firsthand how education changes lives. It is our responsibility to afford students - from the youngest learners to our adult learners - with the skills they need to make their dreams a reality. At every grade level, we strive to energize our students and develop eager learners, who are ready to take on academic challenges. BCPS is a leader in the nation for innovative educational initiatives, such as: • Providing scholastic chess to all second and third grade students in the District. Scholastic chess helps improve students’ critical thinking, problem-solving and social skills. • Becoming the first Florida school district to offer computer science courses at every BCPS high school. Computer science is a foundational field that can prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The basic skills can be applied and utilized in many different career paths. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts one in every two Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) jobs in the country will be in computing occupations, with more than 150,000 job openings annually. This makes it one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States. • Expanding Career and Technical Education programs for middle and high school students. These programs provide students with the opportunity to earn industry

certifications in high-demand career fields. These are the same certifications used by working professionals. • Implementing debate programs at all of the District’s high schools. Through speech and debate classes, students learn research, logic, organization of ideas, and language skills, as well as social benefits such as increased self-esteem. • Expanding Personalized Learning Environments and Digital Infusion initiatives. Among these programs is the District’s award winning Digital 5 program, which utilizes laptops, digital resources, online instructional materials and other learning tools to maximize student learning. The District now offers Personalized Learning and Digital Infusion programs in multiple grade levels. • BCPS also offers Montessori, Cambridge-AICE, Dual Language programs and the largest JROTC cadet program in the nation. Education opens doors to the future. Ensuring our students are college and career ready is at the heart of everything that we do across BCPS. In 2015, The Washington Post ranked 29 BCPS high schools among “America’s Most Challenging High Schools,” based on the schools’ commitment to providing all students with access to advanced coursework. In addition, U.S. News and World Report recognized 14 BCPS high schools for being among the Best High Schools in the country. The 2015/16 school year marks a tremendous milestone for BCPS. It is our 100th anniversary of serving the students of Broward County. A variety of events and activities are taking place throughout the school year in honor of the many achievements of our students and schools over the last century and to celebrate the future of our school system. The District is also moving forward with the important work necessary to meet the most critical needs facing our schools, as well as make investments in music, arts and athletics. Over the summer, the initial phase of scheduled projects began as part of the SMART initiative. You can learn more about SMART by visiting our District’s website, browardschools.com. The list of accomplishments of the District, schools and students continues to grow throughout the year. I encourage you to learn more about what is going on at BCPS and all of the educational opportunities available at our schools by visiting the District’s website. Families, as well as the greater Broward County community, are vital partners in the achievements of our students. I am confident that by working together, the 2015/16 school year will be a successful one.

INGGGG! The sound of the school bell signals the start of another exciting day at Fox Trail. It is the perfect place for students and staff to come together on an incredible journey both in and out of the classroom. The trail to success includes exciting learning from the start. Kindergarteners learn about their environment by going on their first field trip to Butterfly World. They also participate in intensive swimming instruction. The learning continues in first grade. First graders show off their character costumes in the Storybook Parade, an event that the entire school looks forward to each fall. They venture to Flamingo Gardens for a day of outdoor learning. Second graders explore the wonders of math when they travel to Fort Lauderdale to enjoy the “Math Rocks” show and share an outdoor picnic lunch. Third grade is exciting! They visit the Davie School House, where they can turn back the hands of time and experience what life was like long ago. They churn butter, wash clothes by hand, and write with ink pens. They really learn to appreciate modern conveniences! In fourth grade, the science curriculum comes to life. Students enjoy a visit from Broward Water management, identify rocks and minerals in a gem dig, and travel a short distance to the Everglades. They get a bit wet while slogging, but learn valuable hands-on (and feet-on) science lessons. Fifth grade is the final step to success at Fox Trail. Students test their economics skills at JA Biztown, where they run the city, businesses, and service companies. They head to Orlando for some fun. Events such as the talent show, breakfast, and picnic complete the journey through elementary school, and are the perfect send off to Middle school. The learning at Fox Trail includes opportunities outside the classroom. Students participate in physical education, science, art, music, media,

t is with great pleasure that I welcome families for the 2015/16 school year. From planning open houses and orientations – to finalizing class schedules and registering new students, this is a busy and exciting time at all of our schools. As your School Board member representing District 6, I am proud of the dedication and commitment of our schools to providing students with a high-quality education. A key component to student success is parent involvement. Parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. When parents are engaged, students reach higher levels of academic achievement, show increased motivation and self-esteem, and experience fewer disciplinary issues. There are many ways for parents to get involved - such as volunteering at school, communicating with teachers, participating in school events, and talking to your child about his/her school day. By making school a priority, parents are sending a strong message about the value of education in their child’s future. The District’s Parent/Community Involvement Task Force and Office of Parent Engagement recently presented The 411 on Parent Engagement Conference in order to share information and strategies for parent involvement. It also included a non-profit resource fair to connect parents and schools with community resources to support their important work.

distance learning, and technology. All of these experiences help create successful, wellrounded students. Success at Fox Trail is not just about academics. Students learn a variety of musical instruments. Blossoming artists participate in art club. Students test their critical thinking skills in several afterschool clubs. There are STEM clubs to challenge students, too! Student government opportunities start in third grade. Student council plays an active role in the local community with a Harvest Drive, a Toy Drive, and a clothing drive. There are many annual events at Fox Trail. The Boosterthon Fun Run incorporates character traits with a “mini marathon”, all while raising funds for the school. At the Book Fair, students can purchase books and cool stuff like pencils, posters, and erasers. To sum up the Fox Trail experience, there are academic learning activities at every grade level, combined with opportunities outside the classroom. The year is jam-packed with events, activities, and hands-on learning. Before students realize, the school year is winding down, and summer is around the corner. The students are ready to go in their own direction armed with all of the knowledge they have gained!

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is committed to ensuring students are college and career ready. The District’s high schools are consistently recognized as being among the best in the nation. In fact, 14 BCPS high schools earned gold, silver or bronze medals in U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 listing of Best High Schools, including Cooper City, Cypress Bay, William T. McFatter, Nova, and Western. Every BCPS high school has honors debate classes and a competition team, as well as computer science and coding classes, which provide students with life and career skills. The District’s nationally recognized magnet and Career & Technical Education programs also present middle and high school students with real-world experiences. Additionally, all of the District’s second and third grade students are learning scholastic chess, which increases students’ critical thinking skills, and the District is expanding its popular Dual Language programs, such as those currently available at Eagle Point, Indian Trace, Manatee Bay and Sawgrass elementary schools. We are proud of the plethora of educational opportunities for students in Broward County Public Schools. By working together, we can achieve our vision of educating all students to reach their highest potential!

ounging by the pool sipping on my favorite drink, I am deeply relaxed, listening to the soothing sound of my breath as I take a yoga inhale in and a yoga exhale out. I find myself so taken by the sounds of my breath because it’s not often that I’ve been able to hear it above the noise on the football field, the chatter in the car while shuttling and the shouts of the whereabouts of a lunch box, an assignment, a mouth guard or a jersey. Inhale in, exhale out, inhale in…I start to make lists. My head floods with lists; school supplies, sports equipment, wait, what still fits? Uniforms, shorts, hmmm…what color are the uniforms? Did I sign up for after care? What day does school start? Inhale in, exhale out, inhale in…and without warning I am abruptly snapped out of my Zen like state. Hey! Hold on a minute! Where did my drink go? Each summer I find myself in this same precarious state. Of course I’ve forgotten to share with you that it’s usually mid to late August and in trying to cling on to every last bit of summer, I’ve procrastinated and done nothing yet to prepare for the upcoming school year. So the school year hits me tsunami style, as if I’d had no warning my kids would need school supplies, backpacks, uniforms or new cleats. I have to admit I’m the one at Office Depot and Target at 10 pm the Sunday night before school opens with scrap papers of lists and calling around to find another store still open to find THE purple folder. Not this year though…no, not for me.

This summer I vow to ease back into the schedule rather than violently being thrashed about. Since my being ready for “Back to School” is usually the same kind of ready I am for hurricane season, and school madness can be likened to preparing for a storm, I’ve decided I am going to take my mother’s approach to hurricane preparations. I will start by getting the lists. Although some lists are not given out till the school open house, just like water, batteries and bleach are always on the hurricane list, I will shop for the items I know are on the school list each year. Pencils? Check. Pencil sharpener? Check. Folders in every color known to man? Check. I will then go shop for the items on the list. Since I am doing this with plenty of time and not last minute I’ll be able to take advantage of sales and not have to face the price gauging that happens before “the storm” or fighting in a state of desperation with some woman over the last purple folder or the last size small of the red collared shirts. Once the shopping is done I’ll sit down to make the “school preparedness plan.” When school begins, where is each child going? School. Football practice. Tutoring. Dance. How are they getting there? Who will take them? What’s the backup plan in case of emergency? I’ll be sure to review the plan with the family and make sure everyone knows what they will have to do. I make a mental note to enjoy this summer with spurts of preparation mixed in. I lean over and take another sip of my drink. I inhale in…exhale out…. ahhhh....At this moment I feel centered, not spread thin, organized and not scattered. I can get use to this. Now if only I could take the same approach to getting my hurricane supplies!

his time of year is always exciting, as students, parents and guardians prepare for the start of the new school year. As a Countywide At-Large School Board member, I am honored to represent families across Broward County and am always inspired by the dedication and commitment of our parents, teachers, administrators and staff to the success of our students. There are many educational initiatives, high-quality programs and achievements by our students and schools, for which our community can be proud. From Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) high schools ranking among the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and the prestigious awards earned by our outstanding magnet and innovative programs – to being national models for 21st century learning through our Personalized Learning (Digital 5) and Digital Infusion programs and our efforts to eliminate the schoolhouse to jailhouse pipeline (PROMISE program). Our schools offer a wide variety of academic and enrichment opportunities for students, including but not limited to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs, Turnaround Arts, Music and Sports. I am also proud of our commitment to educating all students to reach their highest potential. This includes ensuring schools have the resources and support necessary to

meet each student’s individual needs and engaging them with programs that foster academic growth, while also instilling a sense of community and civic responsibility. Incredible examples of these efforts are the District’s annual Choose Peace activities and the District’s annual Above the Influence March and Rally. Both of these events bring students, parents and the community together in support of standing up to negative behaviors and pressures, and making positive choices. Providing strong mentorship to students, particularly our most at-risk students, is also a primary focus. BCPS Coordinators of Peer Counseling Programs are now the first in Florida to receive a National Peer Program Professionals Certification. Peer counseling programs provide students with prevention-based education and skills on topics such as mental health and wellness, violence prevention, substance abuse prevention and anti-bullying. These are just some of the many accomplishments and initiatives across our District. As a parent or guardian, your support and involvement in your child’s education plays a key role in his or her success. By working together, we are creating a strong foundation for a successful 2015/16 school year.

Schools According to U.S. News and World Report, 14 of our high schools rank among the Best High Schools in the nation. In addition, a majority of our high schools, 29 in all, earned placement on America’s Most Challenging High Schools 2015 list by The Washington Post. BCPS has a large and growing portfolio of opportunities throughout the District, including Montessori, Cambridge and STEM magnet programs; Kindergarten – 8th Grade Campuses; Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment; the largest JROTC cadet program in the nation with more than 7,500 students; innovative programs; the arts; technology and chess clubs; athletics; largest participating District in code. org; and mentoring groups, just to name a few. We also have the largest scholastic Debate initiative in the country, with Debate programs in every high school and expanding to include all middle schools. BCPS is committed to providing the very best educational experience possible to all of our students. As we begin this school year, I wish the greatest success for all of our students. I encourage students and parents to take advantage of all of the incredible educational opportunities available at our schools.

GIVING THANKS TO MRS. NEAVES M

74

rs. Neaves has been an integral part of Embassy Creek Elementary for the past 23 years. Her dedication to the school, students, her peers, and the Cooper City community is truly exemplary. During her time at Embassy Creek, Mrs. Neaves has served as both a parent and a teacher. As she moves forward in the next chapter of her life, she leaves behind a legacy for our school, our students and the community. Mrs. Neaves has shared her commitment to protecting and caring for the Earth serving as an example of “green” thinking and action in the creation of the Wetlands Area on campus in an effort to preserve the ecosystem. Mrs. Neaves’s was instrumental in bringing the Everglades field trip to our 5th Grade students at Embassy Creek Elementary. She has devoted countless hours to our students, giving them an authentic one-day experience as their tour guide through the many habitats of Everglades National Park. Another innovative project that Mrs. Neaves can be credited with is the 5th Grade

Legacy, which was started in 1997. This allows the students to understand our connection to the environment and society. Every year, fifth graders, with the help of their parents, have successfully raised money by selling chocolate hearts. Each student researches a non-profit social or environmental organization and prepares a persuasive essay to present to his or her peers. The individual classes then vote for a winner in each category. After this, the entire 5th grade body votes on the overall winners for each category. Funds from the sale of the chocolate hearts are then donated to the winning organizations. Resulting from the efforts of Mrs. Neaves and our student, parent, and staff involvement close to $50,000 has been donated to charity. It’s clear that Mrs. Neaves will be greatly missed at Embassy Creek Elementary. We wish her luck on her retirement and look forward to seeing her at our school in a different capacity – as a volunteer!

ilver Ridge Elementary students will remember 2014-2015 as the “Year of the Author.” We were lucky to host visits from six different author/illustrators this year. Books and Books, a Miami bookstore generously sponsored visits from Jennifer Holland whose nonfiction books feature unique animal friendships, and Tom Angleberger, author of the ever-popular Origami Yoda and subsequent books in the series. Henry Cole visited in February. He has illustrated over one hundred books and written both picture books and novels. Andrew Toffoli is a local high school teacher/ author who writes and illustrates historical fiction books and visited our school in May. Students were thrilled to purchase his books and receive a personalized sketch in the cover. Former teacher and local historian Bill Sydnor visited our third graders on two occasions and helped bring their Florida studies to life through his Mitchell’s Magical Daybooks. Chris Grabenstein visited our intermediate students and shared his newly published book, The Island of Dr. Libris. Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, voted the winning Sunshine State Young Readers Award, was also penned by Chris Grabenstein. He also co-authored the acclaimed I Funny series with James Patterson. There are sensational benefits for students meeting an

author up close and personal. Students are able to see writers as real people. They feel a closer connection to the literature because the writer has shared personal bits and pieces related to their books. What better demonstration of authentic writing than hearing the trials, tribulations and celebrations in bringing words to life through publication. Authors universally focus on the editing process. They model for our children exactly how much perseverance and hard work is required in bringing forth their best writing. Students also were exposed to the talents and artistry of illustrating. They learned how authors and illustrators followed their passion and honed their craft. Henry Cole showed the students a drawing he had completed at age eight, showing what career he intended to have as an adult. Imagine their delight to view the picture that showed a young boy with an artist palette and realizing his dream as a young child had come true. He is now a highly successful author and illustrator. This simple activity inspired our students to dream of their own futures. Author visits are highly motivating as well. Our students see that writing can be a joyful and productive endeavor, not simply a meaningless task. They are eager to collect their thoughts and take pen in hand.

lass President is a role that only the best of leaders are fit to take. Potential candidates must not only gain the support of their fellow schoolmates, but they need to be able to guide their fellow class officers in order to raise money for grad bash, prom, and other school events. Failure to succeed in this mission carries heavy weight, but recently elected senior president, Michael Turner seems to believe he can rise to the challenge, in spite of his relative inexperience in the role. Big figures in school events may appear like gods of popularity that only a few can hope to be like, but Michael Turner’s political career has roots that many students can relate to. “I actually wanted to run in my freshman year, but I was shy and didn’t think I had the confidence to run. I thought I would get beaten and figured there was no point to running at all. Eventually senior year came and I told myself, you know what? I might as well try.” Michael’s determination didn’t just come from within though. Support from his friends was the final push he needed. “When I brought the idea to my friends, they all told me to go for it. If I hadn’t asked them what they thought, I wouldn’t have found that confidence to run.” As many can attest to however, elections can’t be won with confidence alone.

By Jacob Ferreira

Students must work hard to make sure their names are known to voters, which means putting up countless banners, posters and the like, all while going out and talking to students directly. “I didn’t expect the workload I was going to have. I wasn’t really sure how much I would have to put into it at first, but it was definitely a lot.” Michael won the election in the end, but throughout his campaign he was never fully certain he would. “I was pretty nervous, especially when the school didn’t announce the winners on the day they were supposed to. For about a full week I would think ‘this is it,’ when they made announcements on the intercom each day, which was incredibly nerve wracking.” So what exactly sets Michael apart from previous class presidents? One problem with a lot of today’s teens is that many of them will start off strong when beginning a job, but quickly turn their pace to a crawl when the going gets tough. According to the man himself however, this is a trait he does not share with others. “We definitely need money, ‘cause it’s our senior year. In order to pay for events like prom and grad bash, I plan to organize as many fundraisers as possible. When I set a goal in my life, I do everything to achieve that goal, and right now my goal is to make the class of 2016 the best it can be.”

lease help & donate to underprivileged children and teens by donating gently used or new soccer cleats, athletic sneakers and socks of all children and adult sizes. The donations will be given to Sunland Academy (kindergarten - 12th grade) and local orphanages in the Bahamas to provide an active atmosphere with sports that are apart of the everyday lives of our children in the United States. Courtney Carlton, a Cypress Bay High School senior of 2016, started a community service program this year called Sports With Court. She partnered with Sunland Academy and local orphanages in the Bahamas to collect items they needed but could not afford in order to play most their most commonly played sports of soccer and volleyball. Courtney is asking for our community’s support to help these underprivileged children and teens by donating gently used or new soccer cleats, athletic sneakers and socks of all children and adult sizes. So far, Courtney has collaborated with Indian Trace Elementary, Cypress Bay High School, Cypress Bay High School’s National Honor Society (NHS), Weston AYSO, St. Bonaventure Women’s Organization and others for the collection of gently used or new soccer cleats, athletic shoes, and socks in both children and adult sizes. Courtney will be flying to to the Bahamas on August 28, 2015 to distribute all of the donated items. To learn more, visit her facebook page at facebook.com/ sportswithcourt. To offer monetary support that will help to defray her freight and distribution costs to get the items to the children, she has set up an account @gofundme.com/sportswithcourt. Donations may be dropped off at 1875 N. Corporate Lakes Blvd, Suite 100 in Weston or you may call 954-560-7348 to arrange for pick up.
