The people who created this race series thought, “Why let horses have all the fun?” So they hired masters in equestrianobstacle building to craft human steeplechase obstacles for this nationwide series. The entire races takes place on grass and is run in separate heats with about 25 runners at a time. Salt Lake’s Peeplechase is SEPTEMBER 28 AND 29, 2013 at a to-be-announced location. THE BOOKSHELF

Eat & Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness By Scott Jurek “Sometimes you just do things,” the sometimes overbearing father would say to his young son, who would one day grow up to be one of the world’s top ultramarathon runners. Those would become words to live by—or, at least endure by—for Scott Jurek, whose book Eat & Run is equal parts memoir, adventure story, how-to manual, and vegan cookbook. Eat & Run tells the compelling story of an introverted nordic skier who discovered ultrarunning by accident and eventually grew to dominate the sport. Along the way, Jurek discovered the virtues of a vegan lifestyle and used it to propel himself further and faster. Filled with great characters from Jurek’s life, the book is as riddled with heartrending stories of personal triumph and loss as it is breathtaking race descriptions that take you inside the mind of a once-in-a generation athlete during some of his most grueling runs. And don’t miss the delicious vegan recipes at the end of each chapter. The Kalamata hummus trail wraps are now a regular in my pack. $26 -Review by Aaron Lovell

Racer Rewards:

Unique Medals for Local Runs and Relays By Jenny Willden Earning your first race medal is a glorious feeling, and unless you were a childhood soccer star or Michael Phelps, the experience may be new for you. I remember my first racing award, earned at an all-women’s half marathon in 2010. It was my first time racing more than 10K and I was exhausted after nearly 13 miles of running, but I sprinted the final quarter mile and threw my hands up and cheered, feeling euphoric and forever changed as I crossed the finish line.

What’s your favorite race medal? Why? Share your response of our Facebook page (Outdoor Sports Guide Magazine) or on Twitter (@osportsguidemag). We’ll pick our favorites to win a FREE entry to one of races featured here! Deadline to enter June 1, 2013.

A male model in fancy suit placed the medal around my sweaty neck, delivering it with a congratulatory grin. While I love everything about racing: the camaraderie, crowds, and adrenaline rush, nothing compares to that moment.

Whether you’ve never received a medal or your trophy room is packed with them, earning your own success-nugget at a difficult race just feels good. So I searched our local race calendar for original awards you can earn at some of the West’s best runs and relays. Add one of these events to your race calendar, then hang your prize somewhere to remind you of your accomplishment.

BRIGHTEST MEDAL Provo Midnight Run Half Marathon in Provo June 28, 2013 Night racing is a different animal, and this full-moon event doesn’t begin until 10:00 p.m. You’ll run an outand-back course along the Provo River Parkway Trail guided by glowing course markers and bright directional arrows. Runners get glowin-the-dark wristbands and necklaces to prevent midrun collisions, and you can bedazzle yourself in extra light-up gear too. Complete the race and receive a flashing custom, diecast finisher medal! Pull an all-nighter and stay for the light show and finish line festivities following the race. legacymidnightrun.com

WORTH-THE-DRIVE MEDAL The Other Half Half Marathon in Moab October 20, 2013 Avid racers rave about this well-organized half marathon held annually in Moab, and each year finishers receive a Southern Utah-inspired medal. Use this year’s rendition with bottle opener to pop the top on your FREE post-race microbrews. What other race gives out beer on a Sunday? Enough said. The 13.1mile course offers stunning backdrops: Colorado River views, landmark sightings like Castle Rock and Fisher Towers, red rock, and much more. The popular Taiko Drummers play at the start and at Mile 12 to encourage you to finish. moabmarathon.org

MOST MEDALS IN A DAY Drop 13 Half Marathon in Big Cottonwood Canyon June 15, 2013 Double or triple your medal count in one day at the inaugural Drop 13 Half Marathon. You’ll begin near Brighton and run down Big Cottonwood Canyon on a course with a 3000-foot descent over 13.1 miles, making it the perfect race for an early season PR. You’ll receive one medal for finishing the race, another for losing 13 pounds from the time you start training to race day, and a third for shaving 13 minutes off your fastest half marathon finish time. The majestic scenery almost makes you forget how far you’re running...almost. drop13.com

ROOKIE MEDAL Running Scared 5K or 10K in Herriman October 26, 2013 Does the idea of running 26.2 miles scare you? Run or walk this 5K or 10K and earn a medal! Families are welcome and costumes encouraged. Kids seven and under are free, which doesn’t include a medal or shirt, but you can pay to add one to your registration. This community race is followed by fun family activities, spooky surprises, and much more. runningscaredrace.com

MOST USEFUL MEDAL Ruby Mountain Relay 184-mile Relay in Nevada. August 16–17, 2013 Channel your inner cowboy and earn a custom belt buckle at this challenging relay. RMR is similar in many way to other relays. The 184-mile distance is run in 24-36 continuous hours by a team of 12 or 6 runners, but RMR differs with its Wild West theme and remote location. The race begins in Lamoille, Nevada (about 3.5 hours from SLC) and ends in Wells. Drive in for a pasta party the night before, then round up your wagons...err vans...for a race through Nevada’s famed Ruby Mountains. Make it across the finish line first, and your team wins the coveted cowboy boot trophies! You’ll receive your belt buckle and a t-shirt when you cross the finish, then all teams will celebrate at a post-race hoedown with live entertainment. rubymountainrelay.com

TEAMWORK MEDAL Red Rock Relay 75-mile one-day relay in Park City. October 12, 2013 Overnight relays can take a toll on you. Between the lack of sleep and midnight legs, you leave the weekend proud...but exhausted. Instead of adding lengthy travel and an overnight stay to an already exhausting race, rally the troops to participate in this NEW oneday event in Park City! You’ll need a team of six and just one van for the 75-mile sunrise to sunset trip through Park City in the height of fall colors. The unique finisher medal has three lines symbolizing the three legs you must run to help your team complete the course to receive your medals. redrockrelay.com

FASHIONISTA MEDAL The Pink Series 5K in Pleasant Grove April 27, 2013; Half Marathon or 5K Park City. October 12, 2013 When it comes to women’s race awards, this series got it right. At best, you wear your medal for the hours following your finish. If you’re still sporting yours at the mall a few days later, you look ridiculous. So you can either frame that sucker next to a pic of yourself crossing the finish, or hide it away in a box and let it collect dust. The ladies at the Pink Series thought this was silly, so they had Scott James Jewelry design cute, engraved necklaces to function as medals instead for their allwomen races. Whenever you run a Pink Series race (be it a 5K or half marathon) you’ll receive a unique new charm to add to your collection. Did I mention they have chocolate treats at the finish too? thepinkseries.com

MOST LIKELY TO GET FROSTBITE WHILE EARNING IT MEDAL Salt Lake Track Winter Series 5K, 10K, 15K at The Great Saltair. January–February 2014 If icy roads, blizzards, and freezing temperatures don’t deter you on race day, this is your race series. But you’ll have to wait until January to get your hands on one of these unique wooden medals, and you must complete all three races, snow or shine, to get your award. All courses begin at the Great Saltair in Magna, and you should be prepared for a wet, snowy run. Exact dates for next year will be announced on the website. slctrackclub.org

training OPEN WATER 101: Surviving the Swim Leg of Your First Triathlon

By Josh Green

If

you’ve ever thought “I could do a triathlon…if I didn’t have to swim,” you’re not alone! The swim causes more anxiety and keeps more potential triathletes from trying the sport than either the bike or run. When the swim leg takes place in open water, away from the comfort of a warm pool and lane lines, these anxieties are often amplified. So how do you overcome your fears to survive (and maybe even enjoy) your first open water triathlon? For starters, you can learn from mistakes I made during my first race. GO SWIM I tackled my first triathlon at Sand Hollow Reservoir. I came from a swimming background and felt confident in the pool. At the time, I had no idea how different open water swimming would be from pool swimming. The water was colder, rougher, and murkier, and I felt disoriented for the first half of the swim. One of the challenges of open water swimming is learning to adapt to these differences. Spend more time outside in the water and you’ll feel less anxious and more prepared when the gun goes off. Luckily, in Utah we have several options for open water training. Newbies should try the Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman. It’s small and shallow with no motorized boats. You can find a list of other popular places to swim on the Salt Lake Open Water website (saltlakeopenwater.com/Swim_Locations.html). FIND A BUDDY At my first tri, I wasn’t prepared to swim in the middle of hundreds of other people. All of my training had been in a pool, often in a lane by myself. When the race started, I found myself getting unintentionally elbowed and kicked by swimmers around me. More than once I got a mouthful of water when I took a breath.

10 | KEEPER 2013

Prepare yourself for this by swimming with others. Utah is home to several active triathlon and swim clubs that hold regular group training swims during warmer months, find one for you in our resource sidebar. Also, many triathlons offer clinics a week or so before the race that include simulated starts as part of the instruction. Check with your planned race to see if they offer any pre-race clinics. Until the weather warms up, swimming three wide in one lane at the pool will give you a good feel for what it’s like to swim in close quarters. TEST OUT YOUR WETSUIT Most triathletes wear a wetsuit during the swim. A wetsuit keeps you warm, but also helps you swim faster by making you more buoyant. I rented a wetsuit online and didn’t try it on until I was at my hotel the night before the race. I was surprised by how tightly it fit and how much it restricted the movement of my arms. Settling into my normal stroke during the swim was difficult because I wasn’t used to how the wetsuit changed the way I swam. If you plan on wearing a wetsuit, rent or borrow one a few weeks before your race so you have a chance to swim in it and adjust to the new feeling. Be sure to choose a wetsuit designed for swimming and not for other watersports. It should have thinner material through the shoulders to allow for better movement. Local shops like Salt Lake Running Company and Wasatch Running Center can help you find the right size and offer weekend rentals for about $40. SWIM STRAIGHT There are no lane lines and no black lines on the bottom of the lake to follow, so it’s easy to swim off course or in the wrong

sportsguidemag.com

direction. I ended up swimming more than the 750-meter course in my first triathlon because I kept swimming back and forth, stopping every few strokes to figure out where I was in the water. To swim straight you’ll have to learn to “sight”. “Sighting” simply means lifting your head slightly out of the water to spot a turn buoy, or other landmark, to get your bearings. There are good videos on YouTube that show sighting technique in action. My favorite video (youtube.com/watch?v=v0-lP3exIfc) also has other tips to keep you swimming in the right direction. RELAX It’s not uncommon for beginner, and experienced, swimmers to occasionally panic during the swim. If this happens to you, roll onto your back or switch to breaststroke and take deep breaths until you feel ready to continue. Keep in mind that there will be support boats in the water, ready to help if needed. GO FOR IT Despite my mistakes, I got hooked on open water racing after my first race and started looking for another one as soon as I got home. If you’ve been thinking about trying a triathlon, don’t let the swim scare you. Following these tips will give you confidence to enter, and finish, your first race. Who knows, maybe you’ll get hooked too!

Spring 2013

SHOE GUIDE Spring time.

The days grow longer and warmer; the rain, snow and naked trees give way to early sunrises, blue skies and green leaves. And after a long winter spent primarily indoors, runners are itching to head back outside. New runners join the ranks following New Year’s resolutions, and experienced runners refresh the worn out footwear that gloriously accompanied them through miles of training and racing in the previous year (or the winter). 2013 starts with many interesting new running shoes. In the past couple of years, we’ve seen new players in the shoe arena coming up with innovative concepts. And established brands apply technologies developed for the past Olympics to the everyday trainers of 2013. Overall, running shoes are getting better. We took the most anticipated models out for some thorough testing. Here are the shoes you don’t want to miss.

The second iteration of Skechers GOrun 2 provides a comfortable, well-fitting minimalist experience that builds upon the strengths of the first version. Designed for lightweight adaptability, the GOrun 2 is a great go-to shoe for minimalist veterans and a great “first shoe” for newcomers to the category. With a lightweight, comfortable and flexible upper, as well as a contoured and adaptive outsole, the GOrun 2 provides tactile feedback that doesn’t get in the way for a comfortable and performance-minded run. Weighing a scant 6.6 ounces, the GOrun 2 provides a responsive ride that feels like it’s barely there. And at a tempting price point, this shoe is well-positioned to fit into any minimalist runner’s rotation.

This updated version of the Blade Light Run has an overhauled upper that’s seam free and boasts welded overlays that make it a comfortable and lightweight neutral running shoe after a slight break-in period. The one-piece midsole/ outsole (constructed from superfoam technology) and Aosta inserts (to improve durability) keep the shoe fairly flexible and responsive. Wear testers liked the forefoot flexibility, but found the midfoot area slightly stiffer.

Mizuno adidas

Energy Boost Weight: Men’s 9.8 oz. | Womens 8.2 oz. Category: Neutral Price: $150

www.adidas.com The adidas Energy Boost is a great choice for neutral runners looking for a fast, light and soft shoe that fits snugly. The overall feel is extremely soft and cushioned, with a snug, almost sock-like upper. The sole unit of the Energy Boost is designed to provide exceptional energy return, which makes for a fast feel. Rounding it out is a sock-like upper that hugs the foot comfortably, providing a touch of extra support. During testing, the Energy Boost performed best during faster workouts on the track or tempo runs.

Wave Rider 16 Weight: Men’s 9.9 oz. | Women’s 8.2 oz. Category: Neutral Price: $115

www.mizunousa.com The latest update to this perennial favorite features the same great cushioning you would expect from Mizuno, and a flexible Dynamotion upper that places stretchy material in all the right places. Nothing changes in the undercarriage from the last version — except that Mizuno found ways to effectively decrease the overall weight by improving the upper. As a neutral shoe, the Wave Rider 16 provides a bit more support than many of its counterparts. This is due to an Extended Wave Plate, which decreases twisting of the foot and provides some support for overpronators. Testers praised the durability of this shoe, and heavier runners appreciated that the Wave Plate technology maintains some resilience in the midsole.

For the runner looking for the best of both worlds in a minimum race/train shoe, check out Pearl Izumi’s Kissaki 2.0 (released in 2012). With a newly designed seamless upper that gives it a competitive look and feel, the Kissaki 2.0 is light, springy and sleek enough to race in, but it still has enough padding for daily training. The 1:1 energy return foam and crash pad keep the shoe resilient and fast, while encouraging a natural efficient stride.

As seen on some of the fastest feet in the 2012 Olympics, the Flyknit Racer is SPRING 2013 Nike’s latest offering in the ultra-performance neutral racer category. Sporting an intricately woven one-piece upper, the Flyknit Racer promises a supportive yet adaptable fit by integrating Dynamic Flywire into the lacing tabs for a customized fit. Underfoot tech includes a Phylon midsole and forefoot Zoom Air unit for responsive cushioning and quick transition. Nike’s classic waffle-patterned outsole provides the grip on the road. The Flyknit Racer is only available in men’s sizing, so women should subtract 1.5 sizes to find a comfortable fit.

www.karhu.com The Flow Trainer is an excellent shoe for those looking for a lightweight, responsive ride. Karhu’s trademark is the Fulcrum (a wedge of dense foam in the middle of the shoe), which acts like a lever designed to propel you forward. The Fulcrum may require an adjustment for heel-strikers, but mid- and fore-foot strikers will enjoy the fast, natural-feeling ride.

The Scott T2C Evo is a lightweight, well-balanced everyday training shoe for the performance-minded runner. The new colorway is a striking blue and yellow, and looks very fast on one’s feet. The shoe’s outsole is made of the brand’s AeroFoam technology, which provides good cushioning in a lightweight package. Wear testers found the ride to be responsive yet forgiving, with more than enough cushioning for heavier runners to use as a marathon racing flat if so desired. All around, an excellent package for a variety of runners looking for a versatile daily training shoe or long-distance road racer.

Many runners will find the 890 V3 to be somewhere between a racing flat and a traditional trainer, and capable of handling tempo work as well as long runs. Our testers loved the fact that the Revlite cushioning holds up far beyond other lightweight trainers they’d worn, and that the shoe maintains a perfect blend of soft but responsive protection.

GT 2000 Weight: Men’s 11.4 oz. | Women’s 9.3 oz. Category: Structured Cushioning Price: $120

www.asics.com Asics debuts a completely revamped edition of its core GT line of shoes. As the replacement for the GT 2170, the GT 2000 comes in lighter on the foot but heavier on the wallet. The GT 2000 includes a 10 mm heel-to-toe offset and a less intrusive Dynamic Duomax support system. Preliminary testing revealed that the GT 2000 performs quite similarly to its predecessor, with the exception of a more responsive toe off. The upper fit remains very accommodating for the averagewidth foot that requires pronation control.

STABILITY Brooks

Adrenaline GTS 13 Weight: Men’s 11.3 oz. | Women’s 9.4 oz. Category: Stability Price: $110

www.brooksrunning.com This award-winning stability shoe offers the same cushion and support that it’s known for, while adding Omega Grooves and Flextra technologies. These new technologies give extra flexibility in the underfoot, while still maintaining the shoe’s durability and breathability. Keeping other technologies of last year’s model like Brooks’ DNA and Full Length BioMoGo, the updates correct what small imperfections the Adrenalines GTS 12 had. Testers familiar with previous versions of the shoe agree this is the best update yet.

Newton

Motion Weight: Men’s 9.3 oz. | Women’s 7.7 oz. Category: Performance Stability Price: $175

www.newtonrunning.com The Motion is Newton’s stability performance trainer designed for everyday use and faster-paced training. Characterized by four actuator lugs placed in the forefoot and a 3mm heel drop, the Motion encourages mid-foot and forefoot striking. Testers found these lugs noticeable at first, but quickly realized that they no longer felt them within half a mile of running. However, sore calves often resulted with an overly quick transition into these shoes. Testers appreciated the wide toe box and good fit, and a short break-in period was only required due to some stiffness around the heel collar that went quickly away.

nutrition Race Nutrition for Every Body Committed vegan? Sworn meat-lover? Whole foods fan? There’s a race nutrition option that’s right for you. By Molly Newman photo credit: www.istockphoto.com/robynmac

W

hile you may be able to power through a 5K or even a 10K with no more fuel than a few sips of water, longer races require more strategic fueling sessions. A University of Texas study showed that cyclists who consumed 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour had better endurance, stronger performance, and shorter recovery times than those who sipped a sugar-free placebo instead. But overindulging before or during a race can wreak havoc on your digestive system, sidelining you with stomach cramps or worse.

Pre-Race Power Breakfast ✔ Paleo ✔ Gluten-Free ✔ Clean Eating ✔ Vegan Option Packed with protein and electrolytes, yet light on carbs, this green tea smoothie from Caveman Cooking (cavemancooking.tv) will wake you up and get you ready to race.

Fortunately, modern race nutrition products can accommodate just about every body and every special diet. Just as there are many schools of thought on which training diet is the best, there are a wide variety of perfect choices whether you’re vegan, gluten-free, paleo, or a clean-eating devotee. Check out the options profiled here to find one that’s right for you. We’ve rounded up some great ready-to-go choices as well as a couple of recipes for DIY fuel.

GU Energy Gel guenergy.com ✔ Gluten-Free ✔ Vegan Precisely calibrated to deliver just enough calories to keep you on track, GU’s single-serving energy gels are a classic choice for endurance athletes. Their balance of simple and complex carbohydrates provides both a quick energy rush and longer-lasting fuel to keep you on track. For an added boost, pick a caffeinated flavor (Espresso Outrage and Jet Blackberry boast 40mg of caffeine apiece). Hate the texture of gels? Try the new Lemon GU Chomps for the same benefits in a tasty, chewy package.

Every athlete’s body is different. Before race day, it’s a good idea to experiment with different amounts and types of food to find one that provides just enough fuel without overtaxing your system. You may discover that a traditional energy drink is enough to propel you to the finish, or that slowing down for a quick solid snack can shave minutes off your race time. Whichever race nutrition solution you choose, remember to drink plenty of liquids. (If you choose plain water over sports drinks, don’t forget to add a little kosher or sea salt to help replenish electrolytes.) Quick Definitions Vegan diets include only foods from plant sources: no meat, dairy, or honey. (How do you know if someone is a vegan? Don’t worry; they’ll tell you.) Gluten-free diets exclude wheat and barley products, including most bread, pasta, and beer. Many people without diagnosed gluten allergies find they feel better on a low- or no-wheat diet. Paleo or primal diets rely only on those foods our “caveman” ancestors ate: meat, fruits, nuts, and vegetables. They exclude all grains, dairy, soy, and most starchy vegetables such as potatoes. Clean-eating diets focus on whole foods, prepared simply and with little added sugar or fat. Small portions of lean meats are OK, but most meals rely on plenty of veggies and whole grains.

In a blender, combine 8 ounces brewed and cooled green tea; 1 medium banana; 1 scoop egg white or hemp protein powder; 1 Tbsp almond butter; and 1 Tbsp flaxseed. Blend until smooth.

KIND Healthy Snacks kindsnacks.com ✔ Gluten-Free ✔ Vegan ✔ Clean Eating Tired of energy bars with the consistency and taste of fruitflavored asphalt? Kind’s line of whole-food snacks, made with “ingredients you can see and pronounce,” are a treat for both your tummy and your tastebuds. Savor a fruit-packed Cranberry Almond Bar, or grab a handful of Vanilla Blueberry Clusters. All flavors are packed with critical nutrients and a healthy dose of fiber, and are free of gluten and GMO ingredients. Steve’s Paleogoods Original PaleoKit stevesoriginal.com ✔ Paleo ✔ Gluten-Free Staying away from sugar, soy, and grains? Prefer your mid-race fuel to have a little protein power? Each vacuum-packed PaleoKit contains a mix of naturally cured beef jerky, raw almonds and macadamia nuts, and dried fruit for a touch of

sweetness. While distance runners with sensitive stomachs may prefer options that are easier to digest, serious trail runners, mudders, or other endurance athletes will appreciate the PaleoKit’s sustaining mix of protein, fats, and carbs. Journey Bars journeybar.com ✔ Gluten-Free ✔ Vegan ✔ Clean Eating If you crave curry and wasabi more than chocolate and cupcakes, Journey Bars provide a savory alternative to traditional sweet energy bars. With flavors inspired by world cuisines like Japanese and Thai, the bold flavors will make you wake up and take notice. Another bonus: With no chocolate or gooey sweeteners, these bars won’t melt and leave a sticky mess. DIY Double Chocolate Energy Balls ✔ Paleo ✔ Gluten-Free ✔ Vegan Option Want to control exactly what’s going into your race fuel? Try whipping up a batch of these simple, tasty treats. Their consistency is fairly soft, so you’ll want to carry them in a zip-top bag or other container to keep them intact. Not a chocolate fan? Try substituting dried cranberries, blueberries, or strawberries for the chocolate chips. Combine in a food processor: 1 cup almond butter; 1.5 cups shredded unsweetened coconut; 3/4 cup dried figs; 1/4 cup flaxseed meal; 4 Tbsp honey or brown rice syrup; 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder; 1/4 cup protein powder of choice; pinch sea salt. Pulse until mixture is smooth with only a few small chunks remaining. Stir in 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips. Scoop up tablespoons of mixture and roll gently into balls. Refrigerate until firm.

health Competition Mindset: 4 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Racing Season by Stephen P. Gonzalez, M.S.

1. Give Yourself a Window of Opportunity.

Athletes are goal-oriented people. Records, training information like watts or pace, and positioning are hard to ignore when competing, and endurance enthusiasts commonly use this information to track their progress toward goals. But this practice can quickly become a barrier to your next breakthrough performance. How? Think of this scenario: You’ve had one of the best training blocks in quite awhile. Your intervals and tempo efforts all point toward the potential for a peak performance. You make a goal of setting a new personal record at your upcoming race, but as the big day approaches the weather report is calling for extreme winds and rain for the event. During the race you work as hard as you’ve ever worked, but your pace is off. Pretty de-motivating right? I encourage my clients to consider “goal windows” rather than rigid expectations. Having a reasonable and adjustable range as an indicator of your performance is healthier than abandoning an opportunity to compete simply because factors outside your control are working against you. I also recommend this practice during training. The next time you want to run 55 miles in a week, consider a 50– 60 mile range instead. If you’re having a rough week, go low. If you’re having a great week, kick it up. When you want to set a new PR, consider the course and weather carefully and set a range of time that will challenge you and make you happy.

2. Think Inward and Forward.

E

ndurance athletes are a particular bunch when it comes to preparing for upcoming races and competitions. From superfood fads to the lightest shoes to the best performance apparel, you spend a lot of time and money perfecting your preparations. Still, there’s one area you may fail to strengthen: your competitive mindset. Whether you’re a professional competitor or a weekend warrior, training your brain will help you handle unexpected adversity, remain focused, and maintain your motivation to succeed. So as you create your training schedule for the upcoming race season, consider these ideas to improve your mindset on and off the race course.

Races are, by nature, evaluative situations where athletes are not only aware of their performances, but also those of others. It’s easy for competitors to focus on what others are doing rather than themselves. But in doing so, you miss the opportunity to relax your mind and pay attention to you! Whenever I have clients worrying about other racers, I encourage them to develop a mantra to stop that thinking and channel that energy into useful action. “Inward and Forward” is an easy phrase that reminds you to think of what you can control, to forget the past, and move forward to the next opportunity. You have a limited supply of attention and emotional energy. Why spend it on someone else? Your mind is a powerful tool that can drain or direct you. Know the difference. Recognize when you’re draining and refocus your mind.

3. Do Your Visual Homework.

Visualization and imagery are two popular mental training methods for enhancing performance, but have you ever thought to use

these techniques to plan for your race’s course? Do you know what the transition area looks like for your upcoming triathlon and where your bike will be? Do you know where the climbs and descents are in your upcoming cycling race? On the whole, many athletes fail to prepare themselves for the environment they will compete in. Even the best athletes are prone to make errors the first time around. Consider new trail and ultra marathon running sensation, Sage Canaday. In his first full season on the trail running scene last year, he dominated in most of the races he entered. However, two races got away from Sage. These were races where he was leading, but course conditions deteriorated and the markings became less clear. Being new to the trail scene, Sage went off course and ended up losing time, and in one race the win. This happens to many of us during strenuous efforts when our mind and body shut down and we just go through the motions. Keep your mind active. Chunk the race into parts, imagine the race course and running through it successfully. Know the turns and tricky parts. Complete training runs or rides on the course if possible. Doing this before competing will keep you from making errors, give you an edge, and help propel you toward the next milestone in your endurance racing career.

4. Maintain a Routine.

Routines are not simply habits, but purposeful actions that ground us because they’re consistent. No matter where you travel for a competition, while your surroundings and environment might change, keeping your routine consistent provides stability. Routines bridge our preparation and translate it into race-day success. When you create a routine, do so with actions and thoughts that give you the confidence to perform. If doing fast, quick intervals on a trainer prior to a cycling race helps you feel primed, do it! If you know certain foods rarely give you issues, stick with them! Sometimes it’s smart to pack your own food rather than rely on what you might have access to while traveling. Maintain a good sleep schedule and “load” your sleep days in the week leading up to your event, not just the night before. Make sure your equipment is well maintained and have a checklist to avoid race-day surprises. In the end, this will give you peace of mind and allow you to focus your attention on competing. training

I think if I dove into the topic I could grasp the basic principles of taxes well enough to manage. But my time is limited and I’m more interested in other things, so I let someone else do my taxes. In both taxes and athletic training, the return is greater when an expert is employed.

Do You Need a Coach? 6 Reasons the Answer is Yes By Matt Hart

E

mploying an expert to help you train smarter isn’t just for Olympic athletes—it can benefit anyone. Most of us are leading busy, goal-driven lives, and if athletic achievement is on your to-do list then you have to make the most of the time you have. No time for face-to-face sessions? New training devices and the Internet allow coaches and clients to connect from across the country. Here are six great reasons you should consider hiring a personal coach. 1. Objective Point of View Let’s face it, none of us are capable of this all the time. Sometimes we let emotion, sleep deprivation, or competitive drive cloud our judgement. We sign up for too many races, or ramp up our training intensity too fast because we lack objectivity. A coach applies their expert knowledge to what they know about you—assessing your current level of fitness, how much time you have available, and what your goals are—to create a structured training program. When helping you plan a race schedule, they leave out the emotion of wanting to do that marathon in two weeks, just because your best friend is running it. Left to your own devices you’re also more likely to do what you like, not what you need. Athletes like to do what they’re good at, but it’s more important to work on areas of weakness—also called your limiters. For example, long-distance runners may avoid highintensity intervals, and a triathlete who swam in college might not spend enough time in the saddle. A good coach won’t allow you to get away with this. Working on “what you suck at” is the lowhanging fruit that will produce the biggest gains in performance. 2. Expertise Doing it yourself can be great fun. However, you can fall prey to the Dunning–Kruger Effect in which, “unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average.” Someone well versed in training and nutrition who’s worked with hundreds of other athletes is simply going to have more experience to draw from and knowledge to share. I pay a tax expert to help me with my taxes. I don’t do this because it’s something I could never figure out on my own. On the contrary,

What’s more, doing it yourself is wrought with reinventing the wheel. Having to relearn the lessons coaches have already been through is a waste of time. A good coach will act as a teacher, a mentor, and a sometime cheerleader; making the (often tough) experiences of training a learning experience.

3. Accountability Knowing that someone has a vested interest in your workout is also a huge motivator to getting your training done. Having a coach, that you paid, and who’s checking in on your progress every day has a huge effect on whether you train that day or not. Sticking to the plan is made that much easier when someone is on your team rooting for you. 4. Customization Sure, you can find a training plan online for just about anything. But these generalized plans don’t take you into consideration, and a training plan really doesn’t have much value if it isn’t designed specifically for the racer using it. Whether you have an injured shoulder or weak quads, a tailored plan will help you gain strength without aggravating old injuries or causing new ones. Plus, a static plan can’t take into consideration how fast you’re absorbing the training. Your regimen might need to be dialed back, or ratcheted up, and we all know that life never goes as planned. What if you get sick for a week, or life happens and you miss a few key workouts? A coach is there to respond to what’s actually happening in your training, not what was supposed to happen. 5. Structure I recently started coaching a top ski mountaineer racer. He doesn’t lack motivation or genetics. He’s just tired of being able to do whatever he wants and needs structure. If his workouts are laid out for him, he’ll do it. Without structure and guidance, he just does what he feels like, which doesn’t help him progress as rapidly. Plus, he’s too busy working to contemplate creating an annual training schedule for himself. If this sounds like you, a guided, detailed training plan will increase your efficiency while challenging you and keeping you on track. 6. Intelligent Design No, not that kind. Although the longer you’re at it, the more likely you are to have evolved your training knowledge—or worse (and more likely)—a lot of bad habits. Wallow in those bad habits for too long and you will stagnate as an athlete. Your training should

change through the year: begin by laying a base, then work on skill and specific strength building, and end by sharpening for the big event.

For example, an athlete who does no peripheral strength training is more likely to get injured. A coach will help you figure out when to focus on strength, and when it’s time for specificity, based on hundreds of examples he’s coached over the years.

What to look for in a coach There are three key ingredients to look for in a great coach:

5.10 Sportiva Madrock Black Diamond

Rock Shoes Rock Climbing Hardware Clothing & Packs

1. Practical Experience: Has this coach spent time in the trenches? Does he know what a saddle sore feels like? It takes more than book smarts to make a good coach. 2. Studied: Book smarts are important though, and many sports have a certification path for coaches. The best way to assess this is to talk to the coach you want to work with. Figure out if he’s curious or someone who rests on his laurels. Physiology degrees or science backgrounds certainly help, but as Alberto Salazar (who coaches for Nike) demonstrates, they aren’t necessary. 3. Coaching Experience: My learning curve as a coach was the steepest the first three years I started coaching— after the certifications and hours of studying. Nothing can replace the observations and wisdom a coach gains from years applying their craft. RECOMMENDED COACHES
