2013 – 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

PEOPLE, PROGRAMS & GROWTH ON

It’s been just over one year that SportMedBC has called Fortius Sport & Health home. SportMedBC’s new residence has provided some terrific opportunities to work with old friends and groups, as well as develop relationships with the wide range of sport partners who also reside at Fortius Sport & Health. As a Premier Founding Partner and promoters of leadership, public awareness and education in the areas of sport medicine, sport science and sport training, SportMedBC is delighted to host our members and be part of an exceptional day of concussion education. It’s also been one year since Alison Cristall returned to SportMedBC, this time as Executive Director. Her leadership has seen our organization grow relationships across the province through collaborating on projects and initiatives. Look no further than the work SportMedBC is doing with a number of stakeholders to offer the Northern Safe Sport Tour, offering SportMedBC’s signature Concussion Management, SportSmart and Athletic Taping courses and workshops to an expanded audience in Northern British Columbia. As we approach the end of 2014, we gear up for another season of our tried-and-true InTraining and Aboriginal RunWalk programs. Our Sport Safety and Event Services programming continues to expand its reach across British Columbia. And SportMedBC’s brand continues to grow through our budding media and web presence. There are numerous practitioners in our directory that have achieved some of the highest honours. All of this – the partnerships, the programs, the people – does not happen without SportMedBC co-founder Dr. Jack Taunton, who days ago was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum! Our commitment to promoting sport health on the strength of the Best People, Best Practices and Best Programs will always be there. We can’t wait for 2014-2015!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Message from the Chair

Over 2013-2014, SportMedBC focused its efforts on renewal. Starting with a new vision and mission, SportMedBC aims to support health and performance through sport and exercise with the Best People, Best Practices and Best Programs in Sport Medicine and Exercise Science for British Columbians. Beginning with the development of a strategic plan for 2014-2018, the board and operating staff of SportMedBC looked at each program area to ensure program sustainability and growth for the years to come. As with any organization that has endured for over 30 years, renewal and change is commonplace. I would like to thank Marilyn Payne for her transitional services as we said “goodbye” to President and CEO Lynda Cannell, and welcomed Alison Cristall as the new Executive Director for SportMedBC. Marilyn’s extensive experience in the BC sport system allowed SportMedBC to focus its efforts on its core business while undergoing these administrative changes. 2013-2014 built on the successes of 2012-2013 in all program areas. The SportSmart and Concussion Management workshops continue across British Columbia and provide new opportunities for Provincial Sport Organizations to provide educational opportunities to its members. We will continue to improve our servicing of communities and practitioner members by identifying continuing education opportunities that exist all around the province. Refreshing SportMedBC.com will highlight the growing number of sport medicine practitioners in our directory. The Aboriginal RunWalk program continues to grow and increase its effectiveness in marrying sport and exercise science. As we look to 2014-2015, I am excited about the new opportunities that lie ahead. The Northern Safe Sport Tour is an example of how, together as a province, we can join forces to better educate everyone in our sport system – parents, athletes and coaches. We are also about to celebrate 20 years of Sun Run InTraining. When Dr. Doug Clement and Dr. Jack Taunton developed this program, little did they know how widespread and effective it would be to this very day. I would like to extend a “thank you” to the 2013-2014 Board of Directors and staff. Thank you to our members for your continued interest and support of SportMedBC. Dr. David Cox, PhD Chairman, SportMedBC

Annual Report 2013 - 2014

Executive Director’s Report I’d like to acknowledge Marilyn Payne who provided transitional leadership services from January to September 2013. I started as Executive Director in October 2013, and it has truly been a pleasure working with Marilyn on the transition of SportMedBC. Under Marilyn’s leadership as interim Executive Director, SportMedBC’s focus shifted to short, mid and long term planning with the development of the SportMedBC strategic plan for 2014-2018. During the strategic planning exercise, the board of directors, along with staff and former President and CEO Lynda Cannell explored each program area and focused on program growth for the next four years. One of the major accomplishments is a revision of the SportMedBC vision and mission to include the exercise component of SportMedBC programming. Over the past twelve months, SportMedBC has refocused its efforts on partnership building within the BC sport sector, engaging Provincial Sport Organizations and MultiSport Organizations through sport safety courses and workshops, event coverage and individual meetings to support their athlete development efforts. Concussion Management workshop attendees grew by 53% and our event medical coverage program added two national events including the Karate National Championships and the Speed Skating Canada National Selections. SportMedBC continues to build its partnership with Fortius Sport & Health by collaborating on continuing education opportunities for sport medicine practitioners, offering sport safety courses and workshops and delivering the Sun Run InTraining program to the general public. Our partnership with the Aboriginal Partners Council and the Aboriginal Directorate in the BC Ministry of Health expands our reach by empowering Aboriginal community members to lead their communities to wellness. Participants reported a 79% increase in a healthier diet. 70% of participants reported weight loss, while 75% focused on being more physically active. Nearly 20% of participants decreased or quit smoking. As the year ends and we look ahead, SportMedBC will refresh its look with a new website. Our Sport Safety Manager will once again be the Medical Manager for the Canada Winter Games in February 2015. We’re entering the 20th year of the Sun Run InTraining program! And SportMedBC has embarked on an exciting partnership with Northern Health, WINBC and PacificSport Northern BC on the Northern Safe Sport Tour. It’s a fantastic opportunity to deliver SportMedBC’s SportSmart and Concussion Management workshops in 15 communities in the lead up to the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

OUR FRAMEWORK

Annual Report 2013 - 2014

SportMedBC was established in 1982 as the Sport Medicine Council of British Columbia, which marked the beginning of what is today a professional network of nearly 600 sport medical and paramedical practitioners. Many of our basic operations and activities serve the province’s leaders in Sport Medicine, Sport Science and Sport Training, including our SportMed Directory and our SportMed Library. Those resources, however, are also designed to serve the larger community of British Columbians and Canadians who are interested in active living, from recreation and fitness to performance.
