Encanto natural Con todo lo que ocurre en el corazón de Perth, sus íconos naturales, que atrajeron visitantes durante tanto tiempo, podrían pasar desapercibidos. Un viaje de autobús de pocos minutos y gratuito desde el centro hacia el oeste de la ciudad (todos los autobuses del centro de la ciudad son gratuitos) nos lleva a Kings Park. Se trata del parque urbano más grande del mundo, que deja pequeño al Central Park de Nueva York y aloja especies autóctonas, un bosque urbano y un baobab de 750 años transportado desde la región de Kimberley, a tres mil kilómetros de distancia. Más adelante, la perla de las playas de Perth, Cottesloe, amada por sus arenas suaves, transparentes aguas y bares frente al océano. Tiene vista hacia la isla de Rottnest, otra gran atracción por sus callejuelas sin coches, su ambiente de aldea y sus 63 playas. Queda a 25 minutos en ferry de Fremantle, puerto histórico que fue casi absorbido por la metrópolis, famoso por su ambiente bohemio. Elizabeth Quay is remodeling the city, turning its face away from the skyscrapers and towards the picturesque waterfront. The heart of the 25-acre strip, due for completion in late 2015, will be a hive of cafés, bars, restaurants, hotels and urban dwellings linked together by tree-lined, water-edged promenades. The development is aimed at making Perth one of the most livable cities in the world. Other small steps have already begun. Last year, the city council provided free WiFi in the central business district, making Perth the first Australian city to offer this public service.
natural cHarM With so much happening in the heart of Perth, its natural attractions, which have been drawing visitors for so long, may be overlooked. A free bus trip a few minutes west of the central business district – all central city buses are free – takes visitors to Kings Park, the largest urban park in the world. Dwarfing even NYC’s Central Park, Kings Park is a haven for native species, urban bush and a spectacular, 750-year-old boab tree transported from the Kimberley region, 1,900 miles away. Further on is the star of all Perth’s beaches, Cottesloe, a favorite for its soft, pale sand, transparent waters and ocean-facing pubs. They gaze out at Rottnest Island, another key attraction thanks to its car-free streets, country-town atmosphere and 63 beaches. The island is a 25-minute ferry ride from historic Fremantle, a port town that has merged into the metropolis, loved for its winding streets and hippie feel. Pero en ningún lado es tan notoria la revitalización de la ciudad como en la ribera del río Swan, donde la presencia de bulldozers, grúas y camiones es prácticamente constante. Acá se ha emprendido un proyecto de 2.600 millones de dólares australianos conocido como Elizabeth Quay, que remodelará la ciudad, trasladando la inversión desde los rascacielos a la pintoresca costa ribereña. El núcleo de esta obra, se extenderá en una franja de 10 hectáreas que concluirá a fines de 2015 en un enjambre de cafés, bares, restaurantes, hoteles y apartamentos unidos por un paseo lleno de árboles a lo largo de la costa. La idea apunta a transformar a Perth en una de las ciudades más agradables de habitar del mundo. Asimismo, se han adoptado otro tipo de medidas menos espectaculares, como el suministro municipal de WiFi gratuito en toda la ciudad, siendo la primera urbe australiana que lo logra.
