La estampa smith Quiso expresar un desafiante individualismo en sus diseños al ataviar a los hombres en trajes azul marino y ¿por qué no vestirlos con camisas de flores? Más tarde, las telas estampadas aparecían como signo recurrente en cada una de sus colecciones. Ya no solo serían flores sino también animales, fotografías, arte, elementos kitsch. “Sombras, gente, árboles, bicicletas. Formas y proporción son básicos para el diseño. Las imágenes están en todas partes, solo tienes que observar,” explica. Como un buen viajero Paul Smith trata de hilvanar las características que asemejan y diferencian a las diversas culturas y sus vestuarios. Le obsesiona explorar los mercados urbanos y observar cómo se viste la gente. En sus colecciones ha incluido bordados hindúes en kaftans de terciopelo, abrigos inspirados en el constructivismo ruso, chaquetas afganas y camisas masculinas con los nombres de los barrios de Buenos Aires impresos. Y nos preguntamos, ¿qué significa estar bien vestido? “Significa estar vestido de una manera que atraiga la menor atención posible. Paul Smith combina la extravagancia de una forma privada con la sobriedad pública. “For those who grew up in 1980s with fathers who wore suits, Paul Smith came as a liberation. For those who had never previously worn anything but trainers, fleeces and hoodies, Paul Smith’s style was a pain-free path to adulthood,” says Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic. the smith haLLmark Smith wanted to express a bold individualism in his designs, dressing men in navy blue suits and floral print shirts. Later, patterned fabrics became a recurring theme in his collections, expanding beyond flowers and incorporating animals, photographs, art and other kitsch elements. “Shadows, people, trees, bicycles. Shape and proportion are essential to design. They are everywhere, you just need to see,” he explains. An avid traveler, Paul Smith has stitched together the characteristics that distinguish and unite different cultures in his creations. He’s obsessed with exploring the urban markets and checking out how people dress. His collections have included Hindu embroidery on velvet kaftans, coats inspired by Russian constructivism, Afghani jackets and men’s shirts printed with the names of Buenos Aires neighborhoods. So what does it mean to be well dressed? “It is to be dressed in such a manner as to attract as little attention as possible. Paul Smith’s way of combining private flamboyance with public sobriety. If there is one element that has always characterized Smith’s work, it is the pleasure that he takes in giving his clothes aspects that only those who actually wear them will be aware of,” concludes Sudjic. in
