An Evening with Bill Cosby

Teal Ribbon Comedy: An Evening With Bill Cosby Benefits Ovarian Cancer Research By Julie McMullen & Andrea Romo, contributing authors from Magee-Womens Research Institute and Foundation.

At 27, Julie McMullen was the mother of a beautiful daughter and engaged to be married. She didn’t know that her seemingly perfect world was about to be turned upside down. After experiencing severe abdominal cramps, Julie underwent a routine laparoscopic surgery. While removing the hemorrhagic cyst they thought was causing the pain, they discovered ovarian cancer. Six days later, she underwent surgery to remove the cancer and later underwent chemotherapy treatment. After losing her hair because of her treatment regimen, Julie wore a wig for her wedding. But she was alive. Thanks to the wonderful cancer care Julie received at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, she later gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Richard, in January 2011. It’s an eye-opening story like this that make us realize how fragile life can be. Join Julie and her husband, Mike, and Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation for the 2nd annual Teal Ribbon Comedy, presented by UPMC Health Plan, on September 27, 2012. Proceeds benefit ovarian cancer research at Magee. Currently, there is no screening test for ovarian cancer, and it is estimated that one in 60 women will develop the disease during her lifetime. Join our fight. For tickets, visit www.mwrif.org/384.

Volunteers in the News

Advertise in

Not Too Young To Volunteer Many of you have seen Brendan Hagerman at our trade shows. Brendan is a straight ‘A’ student at St. Pat’s School who volunteers each year to help with the events. It all starts with preparation days before with folding and stapling programs for the trade show.

Be a part of the Excitement! Be a part of the Success!

Brendan has not missed the last 4 shows. He helps his mom, Kellie Hagerman, who has been organizing our events over the past 5 years. Kellie is in the ‘battle zone’ with so many special requests while vendors are checking in all morning. Brendan helps by passing out magazines, programs and organizing the registration table literature. This year the Trade show has expanded to a second show in the fall.

Brendan Hagerman and his mom, Kellie Hagerman. Because of a need for more space, the fall show will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn. Over 170 vendors participated in the winter show.

Pittsburgh Events

Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber Expands Into Pittsburgh Market.

The Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber made several steps at expanding the events into the downtown Pittsburgh arena. We recognized, based on input from our Marketing Director, Vic Cabiles, that many of our members have offices located in the downtown Pittsburgh, Oakland and Monroeville areas. Why so far away from Southpointe? Terry Caldwell, Marketing and Advertising Director, stated “businessmen and women are eager to

‘connect’ with the energy oil/gas industry and found that driving from Pittsburgh can be a stretch in traffic.” Based on this information, we scheduled several events, namely at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh and the Westin hotels, and in the fall, the downtown Pittsburgh DoubleTree hotel. The results were impressive with a good turnout for our ‘Happy Hour’ cocktail parties. This is a new group that can easily stop by after work or take a short ride to the

events instead of waiting in the 5 o’clock traffic. We thank the hotels for providing excellent atmosphere, hors d’oeuvres and beverages to make the events a ‘classy’ success.

“We are always looking for new venues as a goal to reach out to members in other business communities. Call the chamber office to set up your event. 724-873-7777

Education and Training

Waynesburg University Offers New Energy Management Concentration Beginning this fall, Waynesburg University will offer an Energy Management Concentration through its reputable Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program. Due to the development of the Marcellus and Utica shales in the area, the energy industry, which includes a broad range of jobs across many sectors, will continue to experience steady growth for the foreseeable future both regionally and nationally. To better prepare students for jobs in the industry, Waynesburg has developed a strategic curriculum, utilizing experts and professionals already established in the field. In addition to the core MBA classes which include Organizational Behavior; International Business; Management Information Systems; Marketing Management; Seminar in Applied Economics; Accounting Concepts and Applications; Financial Management; Statistical Methods; and Management Policy, students pursuing the Energy Management Option will take Energy Management & Strategy, Supply Chain Management and Project Management. These three specialized courses will effectively prepare students for related and applicable careers. The new Energy Management course will include concepts related to coal, oil, gas and renewable energy. The Project Management course will cover project management concepts, financial risk analysis, developing a project time line, resource management, and managing outside contractors and vendors. The Supply Chain Management course will include sustainability and the use of sustainable purchases, logics, inventory management and control, global supply, and e-commerce and vendor controls. “The Energy Management Concentration was developed with experts in the energy field who expounded on the need for qualified employees to have an understanding of all energy sources; gas, coal, oil, water and renewable energy,” said Janice Crile, director of Waynesburg University’s MBA Program. According to Crile, relevant curriculum translates into job opportunities for students in a competitive job market. Furthermore, Crile said with the Pittsburgh region at the forefront of the new energy frontier, Waynesburg’s Energy Management Option will give students a necessary advantage in the field.

Dr. George Smith, General Manager of Value Chain at CONSOL Energy; Dr. Jeanna Cooper, Manager of E-Services at CONSOL Energy; and Dr. Darryl Husenits, Vice President of Material and Supply Chain Management at CONSOL Energy, were among the experts who took part in the planning and implementation of Waynesburg University’s new curriculum. “The Energy Management Option offered by Waynesburg University fills a void in higher education as it will provide students with a broad view of the energy sector, and will help students to make decisions that will add value to their employers,” Husenits said. According to Husenits, whether an individual’s interest is manufacturing, non-manufacturing or the energy sector – energy will have an impact. “The focus of this program is to deliver value to students by covering strategic industry drivers such as safety, compliance (internal and external), continuous improvement and risk analysis. This concentration will also provide practical application processes in Project Management as well as Supply Chain Management,” Husenits said. Students interested in the Energy Management Option will be able to begin elective courses at Waynesburg University’s Southpointe campus during the Fall II Session offered October 22 through December 15. Students interested in beginning the Option prior to the start of the Fall II Session are able to do so by taking required core courses necessary for completion of the MBA degree at any Waynesburg University campus. According to David Mariner, Dean of Graduate Studies at Waynesburg University, students can expect to participate in traditional academic teaching methods such as lectures, writing assignments and exams. In addition to the customary methods, Mariner said Waynesburg University’s MBA Program incorporates facilitative exercises such as group work, student presentations and simulations.

Education and Training “Our goal is to have an immediate transfer of knowledge, allowing our students to apply concepts to their jobs, consequently enhancing their ability to do their jobs,” Mariner said. Waynesburg University’s Energy Management Option equips individuals working in human resources, accounting, finance, marketing and other energy-related positions with general business knowledge while also offering curriculum that further develops knowledge of the energy field. Waynesburg University is continuously enhancing its MBA curriculum with concentrations that will help its students advance their careers. “Our goal is always to provide the highest quality of education,” Mariner said. “Our students are immediately able to apply the content that they learn into the fields in which they work. The transfer of knowledge from the classroom to the work setting is immediate, and the reason that students choose to enroll in Waynesburg University’s MBA program.” Smith, Cooper and Husenits partnered with Waynesburg University to develop the course specifics to meet the needs of the David Mariner, Dean of Graduate and energy industry and feel that Professional Studies students who complete the Energy Management Option will gain experience in applying strategic concepts to real world energy problems and proposing solutions. “We’ve found that traditional graduate business curricula tend to incorporate high-level theories and frequently focus on manufacturing companies and processes in their application,” Cooper said. “Such application is often disparate with the needs found in the energy industry, and so, with these courses we’ve applied traditional theories within the context of the energy sector.” Cooper said the unique program “provides students interested in the energy field a breadth of knowledge about the various energy sectors and exposure as to how standard business functions (supply chain management and project management) are applied outside of the traditional environments.” “Additionally, the program offers students an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of the drivers behind the energy market and corporate choices and of the ways to effectively manage key business functions in an industry that is subject to rapid and recurring change in the areas that touch technology, capacity, and oversight,” Smith said. “Students completing this program will bring a unique and more focused approach in solving energy problems as a result of their applied, problem-based learning experiences, both in the classroom and through project work.” Waynesburg University’s 36-credit MBA Program can be completed in two years or less. Students can set their own degree pace with an exclusive “step in – step out” class format. Courses

are offered in eight-week accelerated sessions with year-round admission dates. Classes meet one night per week, Monday through Thursday, from 6 to 10 p.m., at four convenient locations: Southpointe, North Hills, Monroeville and Waynesburg. Saturday morning classes are offered at the Southpointe location. For more information, contact Janice Crile at 724-743-2269 or jcrile@waynesburg.edu.

Synergy In Marketing To Southpointe

Are you wondering how you can focus on the gas/oil energy industry?

Terry Caldwell

Our chamber, with the help of our Marketing Membership Director, Victor Cabiles and our Director of Advertising Sales and Marketing, Terry Caldwell, have come up with some very effective packages.

“We know that using only one medium such as print, radio or billboards is an inefficient way of reaching your audience,“ stated Don Hodor, Southpointe Chamber founder. “Our approach is to use several packages as avenues to reaching clients. It all starts with hosting a chamber networking event”. Vic sends an e-mail campaign announcing your name as host of the breakfast or lunch. Mike George, our Technology Director,

records a video interview with the host, and Don Hodor, as the interviewer.

Victor Cabiles

This keeps the program moving and keeps the focus on service and products offered.

Included with this is the magazine article and advertising used as a reinforcement ‘take home’ piece that many will read. Couple all of this with a posting of the video on the Southpointechamber.com website, YouTube and a link to your page. “I found the package to be very effective for reaching targeted clients in the energy profession,” said Dr. Sulkowski, regarding the Southpointe marketing program.

Money Matters

Improve Your Accounts Receivables Cash Flow By 80% Often we as businessmen overlook the obvious when searching for ways to improve our cash flow. First we look at our cash reserve as a way to carry us while waiting for that 30 day net payment on the invoice we sent out over a month ago. Do we call our client and risk the relationship by asking for our long overdue check? Do we short change our suppliers while we are waiting at the mail box every day? Recently, Eric Benson from Facteon joined our chamber. We got a chance to sit down with him to discuss his company solution that builds positive cash flow easily. Here is a transcript of our recent interview: Don: Hello Eric. Thanks for stopping in to discuss this often asked question of how to improve company cash flow. I know it’s a concern for companies big and small. We hear the term ‘factoring’. Can you explain what factoring would entail?

away. When they receive payment for the invoice, they send you the remaining 20%-30% less Facteon’s service fee, usually 2-3%. For every $1,000 invoiced we send you $800 immediately, then the remaining $200 minus 2-3% of the total (Approx $20-$30). Don: What will my clients think? Eric: Selling your receivables only changes the address to which your clients remit payment. Your clients don’t need to pay faster, and the name on the check (your business) stays the same. Don: I have clients all over the U.S. Are there any restrictions? Eric: No. We can work with any business or government agency in the United States. Don: How does the factoring company receive payment?

Eric: Factoring is the purchase of your accounts receivable (invoices) in order to provide you with the cash flow you need when you need it. Factoring is a widely accepted business practice used by large, mid-sized, and small companies.

Eric: The same way you do. They deliver your invoice and Authorization Letter to your client once services have been rendered or your product has been delivered.

Don: How does Facteon’s service work?

Eric: Factoring companies do not require a personal guaranty of collection. We have made the necessary credit check on your client. If your client’s business goes bankrupt and payment is not remitted, the factoring company assumes the loss of funds that were advanced to you. If payment is not remitted due to a dispute with you, they will work with you to reclaim funds.

Eric: You performed a service or delivered a product and are ready to invoice your client. Say the amount is $25,000 (it could be as high as $100,000). Fax a copy of the invoice to the factoring company. We then make a check out to you for 80% of the invoice amount and wire this into your checking account, usually within 24 hours. Don: Do I need to provide financial statements or an audit of my books to get started? Eric: No, we don’t require financial statements or require a company audit. We do check for bankruptcy or court ordered liens on your company. Don: Do I need to sign a contract? Eric: There are no contracts with Facteon. We can provide you cash for one invoice or cash for all of your invoices. Once you create your Facteon account you can use it as much or as little as you’d like. The bottom line is that you’re in control.

Don: What if my client does not pay?

Don: I understand you are making a major commitment to Southpointe and energy/oil businesses. Eric: Yes, go to www.southpointefunding.com for details. Don: Eric, thanks again for stopping to explain this concept. For more information about factoring you can call: Eric Benson at Facteon, Inc., 404-395-3480, 700 Galleria Pkwy, Suite 440, Atlanta, GA 30339

Don: What types of receivables will pay me cash? Eric: Any type of receivable for which a service has already been rendered or a product has been delivered. Don: How much cash will you give me for an invoice? Eric: Most pay you 70%-80% of the invoice amount right

Jason Capps, Owner Of Bella Sera, Announces New Barbecue Service,“Signed, Seared And Delivered” When Jason Capps announced ‘Catered Barbecue’ by ‘Bella Sera’, it comes as no surprise. Jason had this compelling story to share about the family heritage of barbecue recipes.

In the spring of 1949, Pete and Pauline Capps bought a vending space at the Cowtown Rodeo in South Jersey and built their first concession stand. Spectators and cowhands alike stood in line for steaming hot, open-faced steak sandwiches smothered in peppers and onions, fresh-cut fries, a kind word and a smile. Soon my grandparents had six of these “grab joints,” and eventually opened a full-service restaurant called the Hickory Steak House in their hometown of Bridgeton, NJ. As a child, I spent summers with my dad’s family, helping with the restaurant, and later, worked for my uncle’s catering business in West Chester, PA - a full service picnic park that serves 200,000 people annually.

If you are having a corporate outing, graduation picnic or family gathering, this is one way to make the event special with the smell and taste of delicious barbecue. Trust me! Our chamber members couldn’t believe the juicy taste which can only be accomplished with the Greco and Capps Family recipe. Bella Sera also has lobster/clam bakes, pig roasts and custom food offerings. Contact Jason Capps at 724-745-5575 or go to www.bellaserapgh.com.

Money Matters

A Great New Idea To Add To Your Business Tool Bag

Green Apple is one of our members that has shown us many alternative resources to spending cash for meeting our needs. Green Apple is a barter or trade organization that allows members to trade products and services with each other. Trade members range from restaurants to colleges. Our chamber has successfully traded for catered events, video equipment, event member plaques using this old but unique system. Let’s face it, trading started with cavemen swapping wild animal pelts. The concept is still the same, but the system of controls and detail have greatly improved.

Credits earned within this nationally affiliated trade exchange can be used to offset current business expenses such as: printing, business machines, web design & marketing, commercial roof repair, company golf outings, employee incentives, signage, and national travel accommodations, among others. As a member, when you make a sale, your account will be credited in trade credits with the sale price and the buyers account will be debited. You may then spend the credits with other clients in the member network. Most transactions are 100% trade and you will negotiate directly with the buyer or seller. As one of the largest and most successful barter exchanges in the country, Green Apple has managed over 50 million dollars last year in barter transactions with companies from Pittsburgh to the Dominican Republic. (Yes, a resort for our winter blues)...

Education and Training

Robert Morris University Southpointe Leadership Academy Organizations are facing economic and competitive stresses that require more efficient and developed leadership strategies. Within the Southpointe Business Park in Canonsburg, PA, organizations have specific market and industry needs. In response to these needs, Robert Morris University (RMU) launched The Southpointe Leadership Academy (SLA) in Spring 2012. The SLA offers The Supervision and Leadership Clinic which is designed to prepare managers, supervisors, and strategic planners to refine and expand core competencies in professional leadership. For recently appointed managers and supervisors, the SLA provides opportunities to become equipped with tools necessary in their new roles. For the experienced manager or supervisor, the SLA reinforces building blocks of leadership excellence, while addressing existing challenges of evolving organizations. For the employer, the SLA provides an industry specific learning curriculum. The end result is a professionally developed and custom designed program without high overhead costs. The SLA program success has prompted RMU to add additional educational opportunities and launch: 1. The Professional Presentation Skills Clinic (assists individuals in overcoming the fear of public speaking and becoming comfortable in front of an audience by developing presentation skills); 2. The Professional Technical Writing Clinic (focuses on organizational messaging through advanced communication, customer relations techniques, and professional communication etiquette); and 3. The Entrepreneurial Style Leadership for the 21st Century Clinic (offers an approach to entrepreneurial style leadership for employees of all levels and broaches topics from the origins of entrepreneurship to cultural influences, communication styles, legal considerations, client vendor relationship building, and the role of technology and resources in global sustainability). The future of RMU at Southpointe will expand to include credit certificate programs which consist of three courses from specific areas of concentration. The credit certificates may then be applied towards a degree program at RMU. Certificate programs will be offered at both the

undergraduate and graduate levels and are targeted to respond to the Southpointe Business Park market needs. Future programs include: Environmental Science, Land Management and Organizational Leadership. For further information and registration details regarding the RMU Southpointe Leadership Academy, please contact: Dr. Stephanie A.
