f you have a school-aged child, chances are you have heard of STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. According to a two-year study on “STEM Integration In K-12 Education,” “education in the STEM subjects is vital not only to sustaining the innovation capacity of the United States, but also as a foundation for successful employment, including but not limited to work in the STEM fields.” The study also found that STEM experiences help transform students’ ideas on STEM, especially for student groups (such as women) that have historically struggled in STEM classes and are underrepresented in STEM professions. Mentoring is seen as an important key to encouraging success in STEM programs. At the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium in Palm Beach County, Elaine Christian is a science educator who facilitates the Center’s GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) Club. The club, started in 2014 for girls in grades 3-8, meets monthly to discuss and participate in hands-on STEM activities. Each class is taught by a woman who is an expert in that field. GEMS was created when staff at the Center noticed that girls did not participate as much as boys in mixed-gender programs. They sought to create a program that would give girls the confidence to fully engage in STEM activities. Christian said the mentor-based program has incredible benefits. “A lot of girls, especially when they are younger and are exposed to these different fields, they might realize that they actually like it and may want to pursue it. And they also see that it’s OK to be a girl and like these things.” Through the club, Christian has seen the girls grow in confidence and make connections with the teachers, not only on an educational level, but a personal one as well. That personal connection goes a long way to helping young girls see STEM as exciting and accessible to them, she said. She said when students choose a college major, “it is usually something you have been exposed to already. So if you have never been exposed to engineering, you’re probably not going to go into an engineering field or know if you even like it. So this [GEMS] really opens them up to see what they like to do,” she said. Dr. Rachel Bardowell, MD, a graduate of the University of Miami and an instructor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, is a prime example of how support from others and a desire to learn can lead to success. “When I decided to take the MCAT, everybody was very supportive. But … when I went to see the pre-med counselor in college as a sophomore, they told me, ‘You decided way too late. You need to take an extra year and build up your resume.’ I didn’t take that advice. I figured, well,

there’s not really any harm in applying.” She got into medical school on her first try. “I love the idea of starting early and encouraging STEM education in girls,” she said. “And I think the support system has to carry through beyond primary education and secondary education.” As an adult, she has seen the benefits of being involved in programs and forums that provide women with this support from mentors in their fields. She said one of the great benefits of mentoring is creating an environment in which women can share and learn from each other. Increasing the inclusiveness in STEM fields early can have long-lasting benefits, she said. “It is important to recognize that we would be better if there were more diverse voices, if there were men and women voices. It would make the fields better. I think that is what STEM is doing. When voices come from different backgrounds, we can get further together. ” For young girls who want to pursue careers in STEM fields, Bardowell shares the story of going to school with a woman who now works for NASA. “I would tell them the sky is the limit – and beyond, if you want to be an astronaut.” Bardowell also has a young daughter, and she said, “I want her to know that her future is wide open. That whatever she finds interest in, whatever brings her joy, that those avenues are open to her.”

Mom entreprenuers Jennifer Muhm and Malorie Catchpole are lending their efforts to STEM exposure, as well, through a line of girls’ clothing celebrating science, space, dinosaurs and trains. Their company, buddingSTEM, was born when Muhm’s then3-year-old daughter wanted to be an astronaut for Halloween. But when she found all the astronaut models were boys, the girl’s response was, “Well, I can’t be an astronaut because that costume is for boys.” A similar situation happened when Catchpole could only find boy’s train-themed underpants for her young daughter. Muhm and Catchpole took the idea of “you can be anything you want to be” and turned it into a successful company; this spring, they received GeekWire’s Geek of the Year award. “Girls are multifaceted,” Muhm said. “They’re not just people who like to play with kitchens and princesses. They do love that, but combine it with their other interests, and it becomes something that is really cool.” There is still much work to be done toward equality in STEM careers and fields. “It’s not about us,” Muhm said. “It’s about our girls and all the girls in their generation. And anything that we can do that helps to push the market in a better direction in recognizing how diverse our girls’ interests are is a huge part of it for us. It’s about being part of this growing international worldwide movement to recognize and celebrate all the things girls are and girls love.”
