Throughout its tradition-rich history, OU has produced 65 individual national champions, 256 All-Americans, 173 conference champions and claimed 23 conference team titles. Most impressive, Oklahoma owns seven national championships, which is fifth most all-time in the history of the sport. The Sooners have crowned 37 All-Americans in the past 11 years and have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA eight of the past 11 seasons. Leading Oklahoma is head coach Jack Spates, who is third among active head coaches for most All- Americans produced in his coaching tenure (54).

THE HEAD COACH

JACK SPATES HEAD COACH | 18TH SEASON

230-95-12 RECORD AT OKLAHOMA (.701)

Jack Spates enters his 18th season as the leader of one of the elite wrestling powerhouses in the nation.

His success has not gone unnoticed as Spates has been recognized with numerous coaching honors including three Big 12 Coach of the Year awards and the 2006 National Coach of the Year. Spates has coached two Big 12 conference team titles, 53 All-Americans and six national champions at OU. He has also led 30 Oklahoma wrestlers to individual Big 12 titles. Most impressively, Spates and the Sooners have accepted six team trophies at the NCAA Tournament in the past nine seasons. He is also third among active head coaches for most All-Americans produced during his tenure (53). Last season, Spates helped lead four Sooners to All-America honors. Senior Eric Lapotsky and Tyler Caldwell placed fifth, Zack Bailey placed fourth and Kyle Terry earned third overall. Under the direction of Spates during the 2007-08 season, five Sooners advanced to the NCAA Championships. During the 2008 season, Spates collected his 200th victory at Oklahoma with a win over the Oklahoma City Stars on Nov. 20, making him just the second head coach in Oklahoma history to reach the milestone.

His 214-92-11 (.692) overall record, heading into the 2010-11 season places him third all-time in school history in winning percentage. When Spates became the University of Oklahoma’s 12th head wrestling coach in 1993, he inherited a proud, but struggling program. OU’s average finish at the NCAA Championships was 23rd in the three years prior to Spates’ arrival. Recently, his Sooner teams have placed in the nation’s top four in six of the past 10 seasons, including third-place finishes in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. The 2004 season was especially impressive as the Sooners lost eight starters and wrestled six freshmen, yet still finished ninth at the NCAA Championships. During the 200405 season, the Sooners named four All-Americans and crowned 141-pound national champion Teyon Ware while finishing third as a team at the NCAA Championships. Spates’ teams have also won the Big 12 Championship twice during his tenure. The 1999 title was the Sooners’ first in more than a decade (1985) and they also were crowned champions in 2002. Both times, Spates was honored as Big 12 Coach of the Year.

Spates has continued to bring the nation’s top to Oklahoma. The Sooners’ recruiting classes perennially rank in the top 10 nationally. The 2009 class was ranked as the second best class nationally by InterMat and the 2011 class ranked No. 9 by TheOpenMat.

SAMMIE HENSON Sammie Henson enters his second season as the program’s head assistant coach. Henson joined the Sooner staff with impeccable credentials both as a coach and a wrestler. The St. Charles, Mo., product was crowned world champion in 1998 while wrestling for Team USA in Tehran, Iran, earned an Olympic silver medal at the Sydney games in 2000 and was a world bronze medalist in 2006 at the age of 36. The accomplishments make him one of just a handful of wrestlers in USA history to have garnered three world medals. “The Sooner wrestling program is thrilled to announce Sam Henson as assistant coach,” head coach Jack Spates said. “Anybody familiar with wrestling knows Sammie Henson. A two-time NCAA champion, world champion, world bronze and Olympic silver medalist, Sammie has scaled the heights of success in both collegiate and International wrestling.“ Henson returned to the Oklahoma program after serving as a club coach for the Sooners from 19972000. Henson most recently served as head assistant the past two years at Cal Poly. Last season he assisted in leading Chad Mendes to the NCAA finals, Cal Poly’s first finalist in more than 20 years. Henson’s resume also includes coaching stints as an assistant at Penn State, West Point and the University of Nebraska. In his two years at Penn State, the program went from 35th in the country to sixth at the NCAA with two, top-five recruiting classes. He is also one of only four Sunkist Kids Olympic freestyle coaches in the country. Henson owns more than 15 international titles in freestyle and in 2006 won a bronze medal at the World Championships.

Wrestling collegiately for Clemson, Henson went 71-0 in his junior and season campaigns, claiming two national championships and earning the title of ACC Wrestler of the Year in 1994. He transferred to Clemson from Missouri, where he was a 1991 Big Eight champion and All-American as a freshman. He returned to Missouri in 1995 to earn a degree in park recreation and tourism management. Henson is a member of the Missouri Wrestling Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Clemson Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. He returns to Norman with his wife, Stephanie, and four children Jackson (10), Wyatt (7), Ruby Jo (5) and Georgia-Kate (2).

Tim Overman’s goals are to improve performance and help each athlete become the best wrestler he can be. He’s also dedicated to the overall wellness of each student-athlete as he stresses the importance of a balanced diet. That kind of commitment earned him a spot on head strength coordinator Jerry Schmidt’s staff that trains OU’s national powerhouse football program. In 2002, Overman was directly responsible for implementing strength training, speed, agility and conditioning programs for OU’s baseball and wrestling teams. Three of the four programs Overman coached that season advanced to postseason action including the national championship gymnastics team and the NCAA thirdplace wrestling team. Prior to OU, Overman was a volunteer assistant strength coach for the University of Iowa football program in 2001, where he gained a variety of experience. Overman served an internship at Athlete’s Performance in Tempe, Ariz., in 2000 which allowed him to work directly with professional athletes. He was heavily involved in improving athletes’ sports specific needs such as flexibility, speed training, weight training, nutrition and physical recovery techniques. As an undergraduate at Creighton University, Overman had the opportunity to develop workout, testing, rehabilitation and maintenance programs for the Bluejay athletes. He also served as a student trainer for CU. The Mt. Vernon, Iowa, native is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and personal trainer.
