newsbriefs Jeffrey Smith - Award winning Filmmaker ‘Genetic Roulette’ and leading GMO Expert Speaking in Tampa Jeffrey M. Smith, International best-selling author and filmmaker; Executive Director, Institute of Responsible Technology and leading spokesperson on the health dangers of GMOs. By Dessa Stone-Pividal, Wellness By Dessa, A Holistic Natural Approach to Well-being. Dessa is a Natural Health Advocate & Anti-GMO Activist. She teaches Wellness classes throughout Tampa Bay. Visit www.wellnessbydessa.com for more info. The Food Activists Revolutionizing Meals (USF Tampa) and GMO-Free Florida are proud to present - Jeffrey M. Smith, Founder & Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, film producer and author. Mr. Smith will be speaking at the University of South Florida, Oval Theatre at the Marshall Student Center, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa, Florida 33620 on January 16, 2014 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Smith brings his expert knowledge on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in an effort to educate the public on the current state of our food supply and the imminent dangers that GMOs pose. He is a leading consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices and has meticulous research documents showing how biotech companies continue to mislead legislators and safety officials to put the health of society at risk and the environment in peril. Why should consumers be concerned about GMOs? GMOs were introduced into the food supply in 1996 with no safety testing or regulation by the FDA and continue, even today, to have no oversight other than that provided by the companies that produce them. Genetic Modification involves inserting foreign genes from one species to another unrelated species usually via a bacteria or virus as the carrier. These DNA transfers do not occur in nature. The process of genetic modification not only changes the DNA of the plant or animal being modified but can cause a whole host of other changes including allergens in the form of foreign proteins and nutritional disturbances. Since the introduction of GMOs into the food supply there has been an increased incident of allergies, autoimmune system disorders, inflammatory diseases and a host of others that GMOs may be contributing to. The Institute for Responsible Technology, Food Activists Revolutionizing Meals (USF Tampa), GMO-Free Florida and other organizations are leading the fight to have GMOs labeled so that the consumer can decide whether they want to consume foods that contain GMOs. Monsanto, other biotech companies and the Grocery Manufacturers Association are fighting every effort for labeling. What are they trying to hide? These companies know that if consumers are educated on the dangers of GMOs and GMO products are labeled, consumers won’t buy them! If you can’t attend Mr. Smith’s speaking engagement, then educate yourself by reading his book: “Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You’re Eating”, which is the world’s bestseller on GMOs; and watch his movie, “Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods”, which is the authoritative work on GMO health dangers. The Food Activists Revolutionizing Meals (USF Tampa) and GMO-Free Florida promise you won’t be disappointed by Mr. Smith’s knowledge and research on the GMO issue. We hope that it will inspire you to join the movement to have GMOs labeled, to protect our food supply and our environment. Just Say No to GMOs!

Yo’ Soul Art

Let go, free your mind, move the physical/energetic body. Tap into your full creative potential. Allow the love and light of your soul to have connection and beautiful expression. This enjoyable practice of yoga and soul painting can bring flow and creativity into the rest of your life.

Why do Kundalini Yoga and Art together? Kundalini yoga expands the potential creative life force that lies within. Through breathwork and exercise, we can release the energy stored at the core and the base of the spine which allows it to flow through the spine to the crown. This expanded creative life force, called kundalini, helps to open up compressed areas of the body, clarify the mind and purify negative emotions. With expanded creative energy flowing, we will do a meditation that will connect you deeper to your soul. In this state of feeling inward, you begin creating art. We will hold the space to allow you to stay in the state of flow so that you can express the experience of your soul onto the canvas with colorful acrylic paint brushstrokes. You will come out feeling greater awareness of your mind, body and soul. As well, you will have a beautiful piece of Soul Artwork. Come join us for Yoga Soul Art classes. Finding the calm path in the forest of life’s chaos

Mandalas in Silkscreen Exhibit

Local artist Jackie Denning has been creating symbolic mandalas in silkscreen for over a year now. She studies symbols and arranges them around a central focus in a symmetrical design. They each have a theme. Some examples are prosperity, love and peace and harmony. They are made into silkscreens then printed onto cotton then hand painted in. These are stretched on a frame. Some people find looking at or painting in a mandala to be meditative. There will be acrylic palm frond animal totems in the show as well. Jackie sells the designs on t-shirts and holds mandala making workshops as well. New Years is to resolutions like peanut butter is to jelly. It is the perfect time of year to start anew. We all have the motivation in January but what happens when June comes along? Here are some different ways to help keep you on track all year long. 1. CREATE AN ACTION JAR. Clean out an old mayo

type jar. Afterward, place a large label on the outside and use a black marker to write ACTION. Then, fill this container with slips of paper. The slips of paper should have activities written on them that get you closer to a resolution. For example, “do 15 sit ups.” Pull from your action jar daily. 2. Maintain a diary. A habit of successful people is the practice of writing down goals. Start this process by purchasing a diary. On the first page, list your goals. On the remaining pages, write your progress. Your diary serves as a record, a document highlighting which of your behaviors are effective. 3. Design a dream board. Cut out pictures in old magazines of what you want to achieve this year. Paste or tape them to a poster. Next, place the poster on a wall or refrigerator you pass by daily. This imagery acts as a reminder, a visual message of your desires. 4. Frame your resolutions. Buy a pretty frame (or use an old one). Instead of placing a picture inside, put a piece of paper with a list of your resolutions. Set this decorative accessory on a table. As with the dream board, your picture frame serves as another way to keep your desires in the forefront of your mind. 5. New Year’s resolution box. Get a small box. Build a collage on the outside of your New Year’s resolutions using old magazines and paste. Cut an opening at the top. Place slips of paper inside with activities that move you closer to your resolution. Pull a slip from this box daily. 6. Get a buddy involved in your resolution. You are 85% more likely to keep your resolution

when someone is involved in it with you. A family member or friend will help to keep you on track. I hope these ways can help you keep your New Year’s resolutions. Remember if you get off track, tomorrow is a new day and the perfect time to get back on track. Happy New Year! May 2014 be filled with abundance of peace, health, and love. The new year is the perfect time for resolutions and renewals and to make changes in life and behaviors. Resolutions are more sustainable when shared so always know Tampa Bay Wellness is there to help you maintain and reach your goals. We strive to help you achieve balance in your life. The new year is also a great time to reflect on the past year. Take time throughout the year to write down things, people, events that you are thankful you. Place these in a jar. On New Years Eve or New Years Day, take out the jar and read all the blessings you have had all year long. What a great way to start the year off! Thank you for your continued support of Tampa Bay Wellness as we celebrate our 25th year! Be well and happy, Jeanne Jones, Editor and Account Manager/Tampa Bay Wellness www.tampabaywellness.com

Variety is the Spice

T

here is no greater gift you can give to yourself then the gift of health and wellness. Strength and flexibility, physically and emotionally, is a major part of your overall health. In exercises such as pilates and yoga, the body and mind flows through various movements. This flow will also transcend into other aspects of living well. The seasons, one of Mother Nature’s finest gifts, is a continuous cycle we must adapt to. So, how does this relate to your health and wellness? The seasons play a big part in our overall happiness such as our personal health including physical activities (for example, changing

how and where you exercise based on the weather), wellbeing (seasonal allergies, dry or cracked skin) and emotional (how these changes effect you overall). Use the flow of the seasons as a guide to ‘check in’ with yourself and be aware of your current state of body and mind. We’ve learned to accept and adapt to the seasons and usually identify which ones compliment our overall wellbeing and which one(s) challenge us. How do YOU mentally and physically change during the seasons? I see the quarterly seasons as a way to consistently change. Change, especially when you choose to change instead of being forced to, is very healthy, uplifting and stimulating. Enjoy and appreciate eating seasonal foods. These foods were meant to grow in abundance at a particular time of year and

location for a reason. This will also help save money on food since the ‘in season’ foods are less expensive or sometimes free (oranges or avocado from a tree). Also, chew your food thoroughly, instead of biting and swallowing, and with reverence. Be thankful for every meal and bite. Food should be your fuel like gas is to a car. If you use bad gas, the car doesn’t run very well. Food should be used to energize instead of depleting energy. Eat a colorful variety and seek out new foods. Use the change of seasons to inspire a variety of ways to exercise for your lifestyle. Be aware of your body and how you stand, sit, move and rest. Patterns put additional wear and tear on our bodies. If you become more aware (which saves time, money and mental anguish), you can help yourself maintain or obtain better posture and alignment. The Pilates practice restores physical vitality,

the number

E

veryone wants to know what the future, 2014, will bring, and in this case, numerology spells it out very clearly. It is a universal “7” year which is determined by adding all of the numbers (2+0+1+4 = 7) and begins January 1 and runs through the last day of the year. 2014’s potential energetic influences will revolve around deep inner work by the individual in which there will be spiritual lessons regarding selfrealization of one’s being part of something much greater than oneself. In other words, there is much influence towards analysis and understanding the relationship between oneself and the greater reality. Seven is also associated in astrology with the element of water and thus emotions. Those signs which are of this element include Cancer, Pisces, and to some degree, Scorpio, and those who were born on the 7th, 16th, or 25th of the month will tend to have the energetic influence of seven felt most strongly this year. Any industries related to water will also be influenced. The tendency will be to re-examine, look deeply, and drawn new and more profound and beneficial insights. In esoteric literature, while all numbers have specific meanings, 7 more than any other number was denoted as special and unique. Seven is known as the “mystic’s” number since there is an urge to separate and draw back from the hustle and bustle of the mundane, either physically or emotionally and mentally. This allows for the individual to clear the mind and seek and obtain clarity about one’s life and circumstances. It is also referred to as a

sacred, spiritual, occult and lucky number. Representing the search for wisdom, understanding, truth and perfection, it is found all around us in nature, and within the human body and also in life. In nature there is the seven day week, 52 weeks (5+2=7) in a year; 7 colors in the rainbow; the musical scale with 7 notes; 28 day (4x7) cycle of the moon and seven phases of the moon. In the human, there are seven chakras; the cells undergo basic physiological changes every 7 years; 7 human orifices; 7 major organs; the 28 (4x7) day menstrual cycle; and 7 compartments of the heart. In general we see the 7th heaven; 7 virtues and also 7 deadly sins; pilgrims circle various spiritual sites (Tor in Glastonbury, the Islamic Kabba stone) 7 times; and the battle of Jericho wherein the city was circled 7 times and the trumpets were blown 7 times. Those who embody 7 energy will not only tend towards intuitive and psychic abilities, but also experience some underlying nervous spiritual energy. This is due to the fact that those who are close to the unseen world, are connected to the higher energies. This energy is similar to being plugged into an electrical socket. 7, 11 and 22 are the three most psychically connected numbers, and the result is that each has varying degrees of this high nervous energy. The numbers 11 and 22 are known as Master Numbers and are very connected to the unseen world of higher energies. The 11 is a channel for the higher mental concepts and brings these to others through its teachings. The 22 is known as the Master Builder since they have the potential abilities to create reality in a way that far surpasses all others. Thus the 7, 11 and 22 are some of , if not the most, the

most sensitive and intuitive individuals. Individuals who have relationships with others with these numbers should be aware and committed to utilizing the higher spiritual approaches to life with each other. This is because interaction of these higher energies can cause friction, and these can be viewed as an excellent opportunity for personal and relationship growth. How does one know if they have a 7 energy? Use the birthdate (month, day, and year) and add all the numbers individually and then reduce to a single digit. November 16, 1951 would be seen as 11 (Master Number) for November; 16 (1+6)=7, 1951 (1+9+5+1)= 16 (1+6=7) so we have 11 (month) + 7 (day) +7 (year)= 11+7+7= 25= 2+5= 7. This 7 is the Life Path, which is a major component of a numerology reading and denotes the purpose or lessons that a person came to learn. So this person came to learn and experience lessons in spirituality. Using the birth name of a person, (known as the Expression) another major component of the numerology reading, the abilities of the person are derived. Each letter of the alphabet has a numerical value and by using the Pythagorean alphanumeric system, the same basic operation as the Life Path is used to add and determine the Expression. Example: John Ted Smith would be 2+2+7= 4+7= 11 (a www.tampabaywellness.com

Because of the heightened sensitivities, the 7 tends to worry or become annoyed, and they tend to have busy minds- imagination and excessive thinking- which tends to stress them. Natural Cold and Flu Remedies

A Naturopathic Approach by Hermann Keppler ND, President of the ASNH

T

here are lots of theories about where colds and flus are coming from. Is it caused by a poor immune system, by bacteria, viruses or poor nutrition? Fact is that a poor state of nutrition does weaken the immune system. More important, however, is the emotional stability of the individual. When I had a cold some 10 years ago, I saw a Naturopath in Germany and the first question he asked was: ‘Did you have a loss recently?’ I was puzzled by this approach, rejecting with a short ‘No! ’. Coming home I thought it over and discovered that in fact I had a loss! A huge loss - just before the onset of the terrible cold. I did visit my son, who lived with his mother some hundreds of miles away from my home. Recalling exactly how I felt by leaving my beloved son and where this sensation

exactly occurred, my cold symptoms lessened. This experience made me always think in my later practice as a Homeopath and Naturopath when trying to find ‘The Cause’ of a disease. Babies often develop high fever within a short period of time. Why? Because they have been listening to their parents fighting each other causing disharmony and therefore a loss. So, dear parent, if you argue with your partner make sure your child doesn’t hear it. I had twin brothers coming repeatedly in my clinic with various cold symptoms. Whatever I did, I could not manage to really stabilize their immune system. I found out much later that mommy was continuously shouting at daddy giving him and the family a hard time. Now, what is the best way to fight/treat cold and flu? 1. Stay emotionally fit. Solve problems you may have in the family or at work.

foods or drinks on it. Sometimes bodies require lots of liquid, sometimes small amounts. A sick person often doesn’t want to eat as the body needs the energy it takes to digest food to deal with the disease. Generally speaking you should stay away from mucous-forming food such as milk, cheese, chocolate and white flour products such as white bread, cakes and pastries. Have a cup of tea: Prepare a large cup of Yogi tea of your likening (should have Ginger in it), squeeze a ½ of a lemon into it, add honey and as much Cayenne pepper as you can bear. Drink it as warm as possible. Cayenne does open capillaries and improves blood circulation. Take a bath: If you feel tired and suffer from aching joints, a full bath in Himalayan salts works wonders. Take 2 lbs. Himalayan salt on a full bath. Sit in it for at least ½ an hour. Just pamper your skin when getting off the tub and go to bed, well covered. Give yourself a rest. Don’t add anything else to the bath water as most of the staff is acidic and we want to get rid of toxicity. Himalayan salt has all the minerals a human body consists of and provides as a bath additionally an alkaline environment which helps to detox.

2. Make sure you exercise on a regular basis. This way you improve

the oxygen supply and blood circulation. Oxygen is the most important ‘nutrient’ of the body. Dry 16 JANUARY 2014 • Tampa Bay Wellness

caught a cold do what your body is requesting as we are all different. If it needs fresh or even cold air provide it. If it likes it warm, then you better turn the heater on. Don’t push certain

Steam Inhalation: Got a sticky nose or sinus? Then try an old remedy. Boil water, add a handful of Chamomile to it and inhale the steam, covering your head with a towel.

What Vitamins? Vitamin C, 2 – 3 times 1000 units taken daily at the onset of a cold, prevents often developing a cold. A great remedy is the so called ‘Flu Bomb’. It is available in all health food shops and contains a cocktail of good stuff such as garlic.

Don’t recover from a cold? There a 2 remedies which often work wonders. One is Alfalfa in the 1C potency. Take 3 times daily 3 drops or granules. All symptoms should disappear within 2 days. If it doesn’t work try Kali. phosph. 6 C. Take 3 drops or granules 3 times per day no longer then one week.

Vaccination? Best is to go on and make up your mind whether you want to do this to your body or not. I have seen many patients who didn’t recover from flu vaccinations or got really chronically sick. Best is always to get your body in good shape and stay away from emotional trouble.

Tears of the Past or Fears of the Future

By Maggie Batt

“I could use a good cry,” you often hear from women. Crying is a way of expressing that which you cannot express. When an infant cries, that’s its way of telling you that he/she is distressed. Common needs of infant cries include the following: hunger, tired, discomfort, loneliness, over stimulation, picking up on other’s stress, close physical contact, needing loving attention and colic (physical ailments). So leaving a child to “cry it out” is like ignoring their needs. Their cries escalate into shrill terror while their heart races and all physiological functions are escalated. Mothers are hard-wired to respond to their baby’s needs.

the layers of your aura. Your outermost layer is the egg shell that holds it all together. I perceive this layer as golden flames. Within this egg shell are sub layers. The spiritual layers reside closest to the eggshell and furthest from the body. Next comes the mental layer, the emotional layer and our etheric layer, closest to the body. Your physical body is then the end result of what your energy layers possess.

As we grow up, we still need to cry but it is now predominantly emotional release, and we actually feel good afterwards, like we just unloaded a heavy burden. I work with the energy of the Chakras. The Chakras are the organs of the energy system of our body. Science has proven that we are made up of energy. It is my belief that the current medical model will merge with the energy pathways that are being rediscovered. This can be likened to the Shaman in South America whose vision is exactly like the energy lines within the body that Chinese Acupuncturists follow.

All of our emotions, (worries, fears, joy, happiness, sorrow) stem within our 2nd chakra (belly) and may have been suppressed for too long. Four Ways Your Darkest Moment Could

Crash. Bang. Reality. As I woke up, a dark misty haze was swirling around my mind. The moment that I recognized that I was in a hospital bed, the events of the past 24 hours came flooding through my mind. I had tried to take my own life. At the age of 26 years old, my marriage had ended, and along with it, the non- profit organization that I had worked so passionately to grow, was pulled from under me. At that moment in time, living ceased to be an option. After a seven-year relationship, my wife had walked out of the door, never to return--and as I sat in our apartment surrounded by everything we had built together, the future looked dark and overwhelming It was a future that I was certain I was not willing to endure. I turned to Google and keyed in the words “most painless and quickest way to kill myself.” I will always maintain that my attempt at wiping my existence off the face of the planet was the best thing to happen to me; it totally changed my life. Whether it’s the end of a relationship, the struggle to get a job, or an overwhelming sense of hopelessness and lack of direction, we all experience “dark moments” in life. It is these most difficult times that can turn out to be the most profound. Let me share with you four ways that your darkest moments could be the making of your life, should you choose to see this as a new doorway.

Forced self-intimacy When life takes you to the darkest places, absolutely no one around you can understand how you feel or what you are going through. Others may have had a similar experience, but only you can react to your situations the way that you do. During our tough times, we are forced to stare at ourselves eye-ball to eye-ball, as though we are standing in the mirror and gazing deep into our very soul. As we engage in these moments of forced self-intimacy, we make crucial decisions that redefine who we are, what we want and what we are willing to accept or not accept for our lives. It is the choices that we are forced to make, during this dark period, that lay the foundation of our powerful life change. 18 JANUARY 2014 • Tampa Bay Wellness

Blank canvas opportunity We absolutely take life way too much for granted. Trying to end my life was my awakening moment to this truth. I truly recognized with my head and my heart that we live life only once and so I made a decision to view my life as a blank canvas, to start again and paint whatever picture I so desired for my future. The result was that I created an eco-island business in Fiji that gained worldwide media attention, was filmed for 18 months and became a TV show that aired in the UK, Australia and America on BBC. My darkest moment became my catalyst to pursuing life in all its fullness, and as a result I embarked upon a crazy adventure.

Benchmarked experience When we experience a powerful life situation and nothing feels as though it could get any worse, we have then built a foundation of experience on which to construct the rest of our lives. Nothing could be any worse than trying to take your own life, and so I launched a bold and daring business idea - if I went bankrupt it could never be as bad as non-existence. The tough times that we endure give us a place of reference and offer the motivation to continue. When we realize that we have endured ‘X’, and ‘X’ was horrific and terrible, yet we are still standing--then we are filled with the hope that we can get through the smaller battles each day. www.tampabaywellness.com

Be The Beginning of Your Life Change by Mark Bowness

Founder of New Year’s Revolution, An Embracing Community For People Ready To Create Total Transformation In Their Live A moment of awakening There are times in our lives when everything piles on top of us, and as a result, we make decisions for our lives that are not healthy, nor wise - wrong relationships, poor choices in behaviour patterns, addictions and more. Friends and loved ones may tell us we are on a destructive path, but we don’t listen, as it is a path that brings us comfort in the moment. I truly believe that there are times in our lives that we are given a place to breakdown. It is through this “breaking down experience,” we undergo a powerful transformation, letting go of all that no longer serves us, arriving at a moment of awakening. Now we rebuild ourselves, truly discovering who we are, what we are about and everything that we stand for--from the ground up. These are the powerful moments of true awakening. During my darkest moment in my life, the only person who may actually have experienced much of what I was going through, was the poor guy who wrote that post on Google. If you are on the precipice as we approach the

dawn of this new year, I encourage you to not simply endure your life, but to embrace it. So don’t wallow...grab life by the horns, wrestle it to the ground and overcome your demons. I truly know that you will look back and be able to say that this moment, right now, was the best thing that ever happened to you. I believe in you.

What is the basic nutritional theory behind the Paleo diet? The basic theory is that our genes have not changed much at all since the birth of agriculture. However, since the introduction of grains (approximately 12,000 years ago), processed foods (last 100 years), and the introduction of refined sugar in the human diet (approximately 400 years ago) we have become more and more sick. The theory is that by eating foods similar to that of our early ancestors, we can lead healthier lives and prevent many of the common diseases that plague modern culture. Modern humans are still adapted to the diet of our early ancestors. The ideal diet is one that resembles the ancestral diet. We are

Is there science to support it? There is a great deal of science that supports the paleo diet. www.thepaleodiet.com (Dr Loren Cordain, PhD) offers peer reviewed published scientific research on the paleo diet. Another great place to find published research is www. staffanlindeberg.com (Staffan Lindeberg, MD PhD).

When did the Paleo diet first come into existence? And who started it?

What can one expect when adhering to the diet and who should be on it?

I have ordered “gluten free” pizza when eating out, and still had stomach pains. This is because many gluten free crusts and breads are baked in the same facility as the gluten products. Higher Self

WHY

By Rev. Marcella Zinner, M.M.A. THM

AFFIRMATIONS

To “affirm” something, by dictionary definition, means that you are declaring it to be true. So when I affirm that I am fit when I am not, wealthy when I am financially struggling, or loved when I am lonely, how exactly does that work in the guise of living authentically—and who the heck am I kidding? An affirmation is usually a sentence or phrase that you repeat regularly to make a formal declaration to yourself and the universe of your intention for it to be the truth. While some may say it is akin to “fake it until you make it.” I see it a bit more like holding the vision of what I know can be true. Here is my experience of how they work. We all have in our brains a thing called a Reticular Activating System (RAS), which is like a filter that lets in information that we need, and filters out information that we don’t need. If we didn’t have this system, we would be bombarded with so much information that our senses would overload and we would go into massive overwhelm. Instead, our brain registers what matters to us based on our goals, needs, interests, and desires. Did you get that? What matters to us!

For example, if you and your friend were driving down the street and you were hungry and your friend was looking for a date, you would see all the restaurants (and none of the hot guys or gals) while your friend would see all the potential sweethearts (and none of the restaurants). Most of us have had this experience when a friend shows us their new car and it’s a make and model we have never seen before. Then, now that it is important to us, we suddenly begin to see that particular make and model everywhere we look. If one dated a guy who drove a cement truck and would have sworn to you prior to dating him that there were no cement trucks on the public roads and highways where you lived. Once you started dating him, you would notice cement trucks everywhere. You reticular activating system (RAS) recognized what was important and allowed the information in. When you say an affirmation over and over again, a couple of things happen. One is that it sends a very clear message to your RAS that this is important to you. When you do that, it gets busy noticing ways to help you achieve your goals. If ideal weight is your emphasis, you will suddenly begin to see every gym and weight loss product. If money is your goal, investment and earning opportunities will move to the forefront of your awareness. In essence, the affirmation can kick your creativity into high gear.

24 JANUARY 2014 • Tampa Bay Wellness

The other way affirmations work is that they create a dynamic tension in our beings. If what I am saying is at a higher vibration than what I perceive

the truth to be, the dynamic tension is uncomfortable. For instance, if I am saying “I am joyful and healthy at my ideal weight” when in actuality I am 10, 20, 30+ pounds above my ideal weight, a painful incongruence is felt between what I perceive the truth to be and what I am saying. Since this is uncomfortable, we want to rid ourselves of the tension. There are only two ways to do that: one is to stop saying the affirmation; the other is to raise the bar on reality by making the affirmation and reality match. So what makes an effective affirmation? First, determine what kind of transformation you want to bring about in yourself—a goal or intention. Or determine what quality, attitude, value, or characteristic you want to remind yourself of or develop in yourself. Second, if it fits, add an emotion to the mix or a word that qualities the statement. For instance, I am joyfully at my ideal weight of 125. Or, I’m happily living in my own home. I personally like affirmations that strum my heartstrings: I offer gratitude for every step and every breath. Third, make it positive vs. negative: “I am healthy and fit” rather than “I am no longer fat.” Some say it takes 21 days of repetition for an affirmation make its mark on your psyche, so aim to keep your affirmation going for at least a month. In the beginning you will have to consciously choose to repeat your affirmations. If you repeat them at every opportunity they will begin to replace the negative mind banter that takes over when we are not monitoring our thoughts. See if you can make the dynamic tension go away by making your words and reality match. Manage your mind! www.tampabaywellness.com

WORK! Here are a few positive affirmations to get you started. I am peaceful in my body, heart, and soul. I easily see the lesson or the blessing in all that is. Every day, I offer gratitude, trust and faith for everything that happens in my life. I am authentic and present. I am successful in everything I attempt. I am a magnet for money and abundance. Love, wisdom, and discernment coexist

in my heart. Deep love is my birthright. When faced with two choices, I always take the higher path. I am guided by a higher power. I am energetic and strong. I see the best in everyone and they in me.

Sometimes the only step you can take is the next step. Stay connected to your support system and do not falter. Appreciate those who walk along beside you. Through the help of good friends and associates things will turn out in the best possible way!

TAURUS A keyword for you over 2014 is repair and replenish. Do not attempt to influence anything beyond your own immediate life and make changes long overdue. Relationships can try your patience at times yet do not participate in those that have grown stagnant and crystallized. It is better to move on and realize that sweeping change is your theme song over this coming year.

GEMINI Abundance is a key issue over 2014 because you can have more of it! Now, there is an intriguing thought. You have reached a point where you can rely on your judgements and move out more completely from old past patterns. New directions are beckoning so strive to continue making self –improvement and progress!

CANCER Sometimes you can get caught in opposing viewpoints. When this occurs refuse to go into lockdown. There is an old remedy called “going into neutral” as you perhaps reflect on the elements at hand. Be open to healing and let things work out. A little diplomacy can go a long way!

LIBRA Your conduct is key over the coming year. Be forthright and pragmatic in your communications. Seek to see the others point of view and also know you do not have to agree with it. Keep stress to an absolute minimum. Keep obligations to others to a minimum.

CAPRICORN There is a focus now on inner perspective relative to not only how you see yourself but how you may limit that expression. Meditation can be a wonderful thing for you over 2014. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. At the very least, it can bring you to the door of your heart.

SCORPIO LEO Your life, like the change of the seasons, can take on new tones, perspectives, ideas and attitudes. Do not waste this time ahead. Set new guidelines and principles. Commit to living your best life and do not back down. This is a year when you can actually come across your path to fulfilment!

Strive to deepen your intuition and understanding relative to others. Pay close attention to outer events and your inner responses. This is a year where finishing touches can be put to any projects you have been working on, settling new structure and routines firmly in place. Rest assured that whatever happens this year—it will not be boring!

AQUARIUS Critical mass is approaching over this year that can bring to you some stunning events and shifts in your world at large. Numerous decisions may need to be made over the year. Pay particular attention to details and spend most of your time being decisive and determined!

SAGITTARIUS VIRGO Opportunities can abound this year relative to the development of a deeper level of truth and character. An honest and unaffected attitude can go along way to building rapport and unity with like minded others. Trust your inner sense and keep your mind open and non -judgemental. Show your support for others but keep in touch with your own core of truth.

Use coming changes to develop a higher degree of fortification and good will. Use discipline to fine tune your aims and goals and limit distractions. Ease your way through any challenges and move forward with all plans, expecting the best for the best will then tend to come!

PISCES Open up and relax as you move into a year that can be quite inspiring. Times of tension and anxiety can diminish and overall you can feel increased clarity and vitality as the year moves forward. Take more time to play, draw, write and listen to music. You clarity will come from ideas that float in coupled with action. This is a recipe in which you can show yourself more than anyone else could ever tell you!
