Dear Grand Hampton residents, May is generally a busy time for most families: school projects need to be finished, summer camp and swim class dates need to be confirmed, and summer vacation dates need to be booked! Since May happens to be “National Barbecue Month” it’s a good time to get your gas grills cleaned and refueled for backyard parties! One such occasion is Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May), a day we celebrate Mexican heritage and delicious Mexican food and drinks! (There are recipes inside for you to try.)

By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. (Please see the article about our local Amputee Veterans of America Support Team and how you can donate or volunteer to assist their worthy cause.)
Of course, don’t forget to give your Mom EXTRA attention on Sunday, May 12th. She will appreciate a muchneeded break from her busy to-do list, and some extra hugs and kisses! (Why not make a list of all the reasons you APPRECIATE her?)
And finally, May is “National Photograph Month”. What better time to gather together your kids, friends, and family pets for photos? Or perhaps capture lovely nature photos? Please send them in to your community magazine cover contest! (A high resolution of 300 is required for the cover).

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Committees of the Grand Hampton Home Owners Association Committees conduct important portions of our Association’s business. They have the ability to provide information, recommendations and additional assistance to our Board of Directors for the benefit of all Association members. Committees are advisory in nature and have no authority to carry out specific functions on their own accord. Advisory committees help analyze problems, review facts, gather information and alternatives, and submit their conclusions as recommendations to our Board of Directors through our Property Manager. For a committee to have authority to act and carry out duties, the committee must have been created by our Articles of Incorporation, our By-Laws, or by a resolution adopted by our Board of Directors. Committees created under the Articles or the By-Laws have specified duties and functions in the documents themselves. When a committee has been created by Board resolution, duties and functions to be performed by the committee are identified by the Board. All of our committees contribute significantly to the welfare of the entire community. Committee Appointments Advisory and fact finding committees are appointed by the President or by the Board. Advisory committees have no power to act for the Board or to bind the Association in any contract or expenditure. Committee Authority Our Board of Directors has the power to appoint committees and to give them authority to perform certain functions. Advisory committees do not have the authority to act for or to bind the Association in any way. Advisory committees find facts, gather information, and make recommendations to the Board. The Board of Directors must ensure that the operations of the Association are carried out in the best interests of ALL the property owners and the Board is ultimately responsible for the acts of committees it creates. Committee Meetings All committee meetings of the Association are open to all homeowners and residents. Although non-committee members are encouraged to attend and observe meetings, their right to participate is at the discretion of each committee’s chairperson. Advisory committees are not required to maintain formal records of their proceedings. A summary of their findings of fact or recommendations will be submitted each month to our Property Manager for transmission to the Board. Committee Reports A summary of each committee’s findings, conclusions and recommendations will be submitted to the Association’s Property Manager each month for transmission to the Board of Directors. A representative of each committee should attend the Board of Director’s monthly meeting to report orally, as well. A synopsis of each committee’s report will be included in the minutes of the Board meeting at which it is presented. Upon receipt of a committee report, the Board may accept and implement recommendations, it may modify and change recommendations or it may accept them and place them in the Associations records for future action and reference. When a committee report is received at a Board meeting, it becomes part of the permanent Association record. Truly yours, Paul V. Suppicich

Hi everyone, The school year is winding down and the warm weather is approaching. Thank you to everyone who attended all of our March and April events. The turnout has been amazing. Remember to get those RSVP’s in early enough. It breaks my heart to turn little ones away due to no RSVP for the events. I go shopping for the food, crafts and goodies a few days before the events and an accurate RSVP list allows me to make sure we have enough for all participating without waste. The Field Day and Cupcake Wars were a blast! We had a great time at the Chili cook-off and Spring Egg Hunt. Thank you for helping us keep the little ones safe during the huge egg hunt. Coming up in May are some more family friendly events, as usual. If there is a specific grown up only event you would like to see offered, please email me your ideas. In April we have Trivia and Karaoke will be back soon. Ladies Night is always well attended too. Our Team took first place in our Division, in the USTA Women's Tennis League. We are coached by Steve Brady. We were undefeated for the season, 7 wins no losses. Amputee Veterans of America Support Team and Color Guard by Ann MacKinnon Established in January 2007, Amputee Veterans of America Support Team (AVAST) has grown to be one of the most recognized amputee support teams in the Tampa Bay Area. The Team consists of veterans and non- veterans who have experienced an amputation that is life changing. The organization also includes family members, friends and V.A. liaison involved in the rehabilitation of amputees. AVAST members work diligently at keeping the organization , activities and its membership growing. Members train for and have achieved the following Certifications: • Amputee Coalition of America Member and Peer Certification • Adaptive Golf Academy Peer Certification
• Veterans Administration Peer Certification This allows members to understand and assist other amputees in becoming independent and empowered individuals. The success of the organization is a statement of the dedication of the officers, advisory council and members. The AVAST amputee color guard was started in 2012. "Our purpose was to raise awareness, hope and inspiration for wounded veterans and amputees. We wanted to show the people of the community and the nation that even though 12
you're an amputee, you can still come back and be a productive part of society," says Rudy Salas, president of AVAST, and Meadow Pointe resident. "A lot of wounded veterans returning home don't know that. The color guard is only part of what our organization does." The first Wednesday of every month, AVAST members gather at Terrace Hill Golf Club along with patients from the James Haley Veterans Memorial Hospital. They work to develop adaptive golfing skills and help coach the veterans in the game's rules and etiquette. Each day out on the golf course is a gift to all who participate. "There are so many people responsible for our growth throughout the year; I cannot thank all of them," adds Rudy. "To all the organizations who invited us to golf tournaments, I say thank you and keep those invitations coming!" There are a variety of ways that you can participate, help or donate. Cash or donations by check or money orders are always beneficial to assist with transportation, fees and expenses related to the outreach of our members. Lightning Community Hero is New Tampa Resident Allen Guy
Award for service includes $50,000 prize New Tampa resident Allen Guy was awarded a Lightning Community Hero award at a NHL Lightning home game at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in early April. The prize includes a $50,000 grant to help the organizations in Tampa Bay that Guy supports with his time and energy. Guy was nominated by New Tampa Young Life area director Alissa Holcomb. "Allen's contribution to our organization is immeasurable," she says. "He has served

Woman's Club of New Tampa March was a fun Month for the GFWC Woman's Club of New Tampa, we put time into the community with fun projects. To start we collected art supplies for the New Tampa Family YMCA Adaptive Art Program, a basket of supplies was given to Kristen Osterman who is the teacher for the art program. These items will be put to good use in class, because on Saturday, April 27th, at Wiregrass Mall the YMCA and the GFWC New Tampa Woman's Club will be hosting a Art Show displaying the adaptive art participants' work. Please be sure and stop by and take a look at these fine pieces. With spring in the air, members put together Easter baskets made from recycled strawberry pint containers. This project was taken to the Head Start at MOSI where members helped the young students
put a handle on the basket and fill it with grass and fun goodies. The students loved the project and we enjoyed their faces when we showed them what they were going to do. We are also continuing with tutoring at Heritage Elementary School till the end of the year, members are enjoying helping the young kids improve their reading and math skills. This will be a ongoing project through the year. Relay for Life New Tampa Mary Kay Sisterhood Fundraising All Stars This May 17, come to Freedom High School for Relay for Life New Tampa, and look for 15 women wearing pink cowboy hats. They are the Mary Kay Sisterhood. Over the past three years, this rip-roaring team has raised thousands of dollars to cure cancer. Their wine tasting in March raised $880 of the $3,147 already banked with the American Cancer Society. Quail Hollow Golf Club, Time for Wine, Jersey Mike’s and Hampton Inn stepped up to help. Bay City Bank in Lutz collected $137 in change at teller windows. If you missed that event, come to the Mary Kay Sisterhood tent during the Relay. Sisterhood and Survivors “This lady is such a beautiful soul and example for all of us—and she’s a survivor!” That is how Linda Omer of Wellswood describes fellow Mary Kay Sisterhood teammate Dianne Jones. Omer and Jones will both hoof it around the Freedom High School track on May 17-18 during Relay for Life New Tampa. Dianne survived stage-three colon cancer twice. Her doctor calls her his miracle patient. “I’m always so flattered when Linda says I’m an example. No matter when I speak, I believe I’m there because someone needs to hear that message. So many times people tell me thank you because they have colon cancer or because they were afraid of getting a colonoscopy. I’m especially grateful I was able to walk again with Linda last year,” Jones said. Omer, whose mother and aunts had breast cancer, walked her second Relay last year. It was the first year she walked as a breast cancer survivor. “I was walking for everyone else. As I went through treatment, I watched Dianne,” Omer added. She chose to be upbeat, brave and beautiful—continuing her Mary Kay business during her treatment. “I gave out small perfume samples
for a $5 Relay donation at a garage sale this year. You know, I made more for the Relay that I did for the garage sale!” she said.

I sat there and watched all these women with smiles coming and going. Some of them were very ill. I kicked myself. I said they can do it, then I can do it,” Mitchell said. “I got involved in Relay when Donna (Moyer) invited me. Now I raise money for hospice and Relay.
