Pilar, yate de Ernest Hemingway en la Habana Por el Dr. Martín Aróstegui Director de Viajes y Exploraciones de Sol y Mar Magazine Viajé a la Habana con una delegación de la IGFA (International Game Fish Association), integrada por su Presidente Rob Kramer; y Jason Schratwieser, Director de Ciencia y Pesca de esta institución para tener el honor de visitar en Finca Vigía el yate Pilar, construido especialmente para el novelista Ernest Hemingway en 1934, en el astillero Wheeler Shipyards de Nueva York. El yate Pilar fue de gran inspiración para Hemingway en su novela El Viejo y el Mar. Gregorio Fuentes, el único patrón que tuvo este yate y protagonista principal de la obra El Viejo y el Mar, hizo un pacto con Hemingway que consistió en que si uno de ellos fallecía, el yate Pilar no volvería a navegar nunca más. Por esa razón, cuando el escritor se suicidó el 2 de julio de 1961, su viuda Mary Welsh regaló el yate a Gregorio, quien a su vez lo donó a Finca Vigía, en 1962, última morada del escritor en la Habana. El Pilar es un yate de 38 pies de eslora (Wheeler Playmate) y un verdadero tesoro naval e histórico que trasciende el tiempo, el cual será recordado siempre como el yate insignia del famoso escritor Ernest Hemingway.

Casi siempre las joyas más preciosas son las más difíciles de encontrar. Esto sucede con las mejores playas de República Dominicana. Para encontrar las playas más espectacularmente vírgenes como la de El Rincón, tendrán que olvidarse de los catálogos y de los cómodos transportes con aire acondicionado, y tal vez ir un poco más incómoda. Para llegar allí las carreteras no principales son terraplenes en bastante mal estado, están llenos de baches, piedras y charcos. Por ellas se viaja lento, y preguntando porque no hay carteles ni señales de tránsito, pero cuando lleguen se quedaran sin palabras para describir
lo que sus ojos ven. No voy a intentar describirla, me contento con poder mostrarles las fotos que tome durante mi más reciente viaje con América Mía. Playa Rincón no cuenta con ningún tipo de infraestructura hotelera, pero en realidad tampoco la necesita. Un limpio y fresco río que desemboca en la playa, sustituye a las duchas, y un par de lugareños tienen dispuestas una carpa y unos taburetes de troncos y en una barbacoa rudimentaria asarán la pesca del día o unas langostas. Si se quieren quedar a dormir aquí, simplemente esperen el anochecer y que mejor que en la playa bajo este techo de mil millones de estrellas. Playa Rincón fue considerada como una de las cinco playas más hermosas del mundo por la Revista especializada de viajes “Conde Nast Travel”. Playa Rincón es una milla y media de blanca y azucarada arena, aguas azulosas y rodeadas de
vegetación cubierta por montañas. En un extremo podemos encontrarnos con el hermoso arroyo de agua fría proveniente de las montañas y al otro extremo una gruta extensa, entre ambos existen miles de palmas de cocoteros guardando un testimonio silencioso, de la belleza natural de Playa Rincón. El viaje es difícil y desde la población de Las Terrenas, que es el pueblo de importancia más cercano, dura aproximadamente dos horas dando brincos y saltos dentro del vehículo. Le recomendamos un vehículo todo terreno. Pero una vez que llegas a la Playa El Rincón te percatas que eres de los pocos afortunados que aun pueden disfrutar de uno de los lugares más bellos que ojos humanos vieran y que aun no han sido corrompidos por el turismo masivo. Ojala podamos mantener virgen Playa Rincón para que nuestros hijos y los hijos de nuestros hijos tengan la dicha de poder disfrutar de la naturaleza pura y cristalina, tal y como la encontraron los primeros visitantes que descubrieron estas tierras.
CRECE CARTAGENA DE INDIAS
EN EL SECTOR DE CRUCEROS
El sector de cruceros ha sido el de mayor crecimiento en la industria del turismo colombiano. El número de barcos y visitantes que arribaron al país se ha incrementado considerablemente desde el 2003.
Cartagena de Indias en cifras de cruceros Hubo un incremento en el 2009 de 282.705 visitantes a 321.100 cruceristas en el 2010. Igualmente ocurrió lo mismo en los tripulantes, donde se registró un aumento del 10.97 por ciento. En lo que va de este año 2011 han llegado a la ciudad 73 cruceros con 172.251 pasajeros y 48.658 tripulantes, los cuales le han dejado a la economía de la ciudad cerca de 34 mil millones de pesos. De acuerdo a la información del Ministerio de Comercio, Industria y Turismo, en 2007 llegaron a Colombia 99 embarcaciones con 126.890 pasajeros; en 2008 arribaron 161 buques con 228.221 visitantes; en 2009, llegaron 204 con 324.581 pasajeros y el año pasado se alcanzó un máximo de 267 navíos de turismo con 401.008 cruceristas.

En 1974 los países de Argentina y Uruguay construyeron una represa hidroeléctrica sobre el Río Uruguay para la generación de energía eléctrica para ambos países. Las aguas de la represa, altamente oxigenadas y ricas en nutrientes, crearon el hábitat perfecto para el florecimiento de los peces de río, especialmente de los Dorados de oro. Poco después que la represa empezó a generar energía a la zona se convirtió en un sitio ideal para hacer una pesquería excepcional de especies propias de los grandes ríos. Con la regulación estricta de las autoridades, este río se ha convertido hoy en uno de los mejores para pescar Dorado en el mundo. En un viaje reciente junto a mi esposa Roberta capturamos un promedio de 20 peces por día, con un peso promedio de 10 libra; y el más grande de 38 libras. Como usted puede observar en las fotos, Roberta pescó los más grandes. Toda la pesca se realiza con señuelos artificiales y de moscas. Los cebos naturales no están permitidos. Además, todos los peces son capturados y liberados. Esta es la forma en que las autoridades han conservado este tipo de pesca. En el camino a El Salto, pasamos unos encantadores días de turismo en Buenos Aires. Escribiré sobre esas experiencias en una futura edición de la revista. LAS FLOTAS DEL NUEVO MUNDO (Parte II) Por Clemente Atia Fue aproximadamente durante un período de más de 200 años en que flotas españolas navegaron hacia el este desde el Nuevo Mundo cargadas de tesoros consistentes en barras de oro y plata; monedas de diferentes valores todas de oro y plata, así como joyas, además de perlas marinas y esmeraldas. Si leyeron mi artículo anterior en Sol y Mar Magazine, verán que España dependía y necesitaba con urgencia esta carga preciosa para poder mantener su poder y sufragar sus guerras. Por eso era vital para la Corona garantizar el arribo de cada uno de estos barcos a suelo español. Para este objetivo las flotas fueron artilladas a fin de poder enfrentar a piratas y corsarios que desplegaban astucia y valentía para capturar a toda costa cualquiera de estos tesoros
flotantes durante su larga travesía hacia Europa. Pero había un enemigo más fuerte y poderoso que los peores piratas del Caribe de aquella época, y eran los ciclones tropicales y los bancos de coral de las costas del Caribe y La Florida. En 1715 la gran Flota de la Plata integrada por 12 buques, seis españoles procedentes de Panamá, cinco de la nueva flota, y uno capitaneado por un francés, partieron de La Habana con una carga de unos seis millones de pesos, según el inventario de la época, y otra cantidad similar sin inventariar de contrabando, como se sabe hoy día. Esto los convertía en codiciadas presas para ambiciosos piratas y, a su vez, en potenciales naufragios, pues
estaban doblemente pesados y sobre cargados para navegar y maniobrar. Justamente después de seis días de haber partido de la bahía de La Habana, la flota fue azotada por un feroz huracán que la empujó hacia la costa por estribor hasta zonas bajas, donde uno a uno los galeones se destruyeron y voltearon su carga sobre la arena y los arrecifes a pocos metros de la orilla. Sólo el barco capitaneado por el francés logró sortear las gigantescas olas y navegando en mar abierto pudo llegar días después a puerto seguro. Se salvaron unos mil quinientos marineros y tripulantes que gracias a la cercanía de la costa lograron nadar hasta la orilla, pero unos mil se ahogaron. A pesar de que los sobrevivientes intentaron tan pronto como pudieron organizar un rescate de la carga utilizando indios buceadores, gran parte de ésta no pudo ser recuperada y permanece ahí, sepultada bajo toneladas de arena. Actualmente sólo están ubicados seis de los once galeones de aquella flota de 1715, y aunque ciertas compañías tienen los derechos para la búsqueda y recuperación de sus tesoros, la otra parte de ellos que fue arrastrada hacia la orilla está legalmente al alcance de todos, y se sabe que más de la mitad de la carga total de la flota está ahí, en al menos seis diferentes zonas esperando por personas como usted y yo. Coconut Grove, un lugar encantador Por Lilene Faroy www.FaroyAerialProjects.com La comunidad conocida como Coconut Grove es esencialmente muy ecléctica y posee una fuerte atracción para los amantes de las actividades poco convencionales como la famosa “Carrera de Camas” por las calles de su downtown y el festival de Arte, destacando artistas muy variados y fuera de lo común. Coconut Grove es también la de-
licia de los conocedores de las artes gastronómicas, ya que cuenta con una gran variedad de cafés al aire libre, restaurantes de carácter internacional y franquicias tan conocidas como Johnny Rocket y Cheesecake Factory. Aquí se encuentra ahora la conocida Marina de Dinner Key, que ha servido como sede de uno de los tan esperados eventos de exhibición de botes para los ávidos yatistas como es el Dinner Key Boat Show. En resumen, Coconut Grove es un lugar pintoresco y acogedor, donde infinidad de personas caminan por sus calles disfrutando de su ambiente relajado y bohemio.

Pat Ford está considerado como el mejor fotógrafo de pesca deportiva en Estados Unidos de América. Se graduó como abogado en la Escuela de Leyes de la universidad de Columbia en 1965. Actualmente es un prominente abogado de litigio en las cortes de la Florida, además de un fotógrafo apasionado por la pesca. Pat Ford ha viajado intensamente a través del mundo y ha obtenido 32 récords mundiales de pesca en diversos torneos celebrados por la IGFA. Es autor del libro “Los mejores viajes de pesca que el dinero puede comprar”, que narra diferentes lugares que él prefiere ir a pescar con anzuelo de mosca.

Desde que los primeros exploradores arribaron al nuevo continente y se encontraron con lo que llamaron “bosques en el mar”, de donde los aborígenes extraían ostras y peces, comenzaron a desarrollarse múltiples actividades relacionadas al mismo. Su localización a lo largo de la zona costera donde se produjeron posteriormente muchos de los asentamientos humanos ha provocado un inevitable deterioro de los manglares, hasta el momento habiéndose producido en los últimos 50 años una pérdida de casi la mitad de los existentes.
¿Qué son en realidad estos “bosques en el mar”? Son formaciones vegetales en las que encontramos distintas especies de mangle, un árbol con ramas que bajan y arraigan en el suelo. El mangle tiene la característica principal de ser resistente a la salinidad del agua, desarrollándose en planicies y humedales costeros, alrededor de lagunas y esteros, o cerca de las desembocaduras de ríos. Los manglares tienen una distribución geográfica bastante amplia apareciendo en las costas de muchas zonas tropicales y subtropicales del mundo entre los 25 grados norte y 25 grados de latitud sur, pudiéndose encontrar en 100 países; aunque su extensión es limitada, ya que sólo ocupan una franja estrecha de terrenos inundables por el mar en dependencia de la amplitud de las mareas. La importancia del manglar no sólo es económica, sino también biológica y socio-cultural. Son importantes para la educación e investigación científica, además son usados para la recreación pasiva, actividades turísticas y como fuente de extracción de madera para fabricar carbón vegetal, construir verjas y nasas para la pesca. Aún conociendo todos sus beneficios, el 75% de los mangles han sido destruidos y los que quedan están en peligro de desaparecer.

Pilar, Hemingway’s Yacht in Havana By Dr. Martín Aróstegui Travel and Exploration Director of Sol y Mar Magazine I traveled to Cuba as part of a delegation from the IGFA (International Game Fish Association), which included President Rob Kramer and Conservation Director Jason Schratwieser to visit Finca Vigia (Hemingway’s Home) and his famous fishing boat Pilar. This boat was built specially for Hemingway in 1934 at the Wheeler shipyards in New York. The Pilar was a great inspiration to Hemingway in his writing of The Old Man and the Sea. Gregorio Fuentes, the only captain of the Pilar became the inspiration for the “Old Man”, he and Hemingway made a pact that if one of them died the Pilar would never sail again. This is the reason that when Hemingway committed suicide in 1961, his widow Mary Welch donated the boat to Gregorio whom in turn donated it to Finca Vigia, the last of Hemingway’s homes in Havana. The Pilar is a 38 footer, which became a true naval and historic treasure that has transcended time. This great boat is on display at Finca Vigia, which is today a museum honoring the life of Ernest Hemingway.

www.americamia.com Almost always, the most precious jewels are the hardest to find. This happens to the best beaches of the Dominican Republic. To say that the Dominican Republic has spectacular beaches is commonplace. To find the most spectacular virgin beaches like El Rincon, you will have to forget about the catalogs and the comfortable air conditioned transport, and perhaps be a little uncomfortable. No major roads go there and the ones that do are in pretty bad shape full of potholes, rocks and puddles. Travel is slow along these roads, and you may
be nervous wondering why there are no posters or signs, but the sight upon exiting the building is astonishing. I will not try to describe it, I am content to be able to show the photos that I took during my recent trip to America Mia. Playa Rincon does not have any type of hotel infrastructure, but it does not actually need it. A clean, cool river flows into the beach, replacing showers; a couple of locals have arranged a tent and some log stools and a rudimentary barbecue roast the day’s catch or a lobster. If you want to stay overnight here, just wait for the evening, and what better way to do so than on the beach under the roof of a billion stars. Playa Rincón was considered one of the five world’s most beautiful beaches by the travel specialist magazine “Conde Nast Travel.” Playa Rincon is one-half mile of white sugary
sand, blue water and is surrounded by mountains covered by vegetation. At one extreme we can find the beautiful stream of cold water from the mountains and at the other a large cave; between them there are thousands of coconut palms keeping silent witness to the natural beauty of Playa Rincon. The journey is difficult and from the village of Las Terrenas, which is the nearest major town, takes about two hours hopping and jumping around in the car. We recommend an all terrain vehicle. But once you get to the Playa El Rincón you realize that you are one of the lucky few who can still enjoy one of the most beautiful places that human eyes can see and that has not yet been corrupted by mass tourism. Hopefully we can keep Playa Rincon pristine for our children and our children’s children, so they have the joy of enjoying a pure crystalline nature, as pure as the first visitors of this island found it.
CARTAGENA DE INDIAS GROWING SECTOR IN THE CRUISE Â The
cruise industry has been the fastest growing tourism industry in Colombia. The number of boats and visitors that arrived in the country has increased considerably since 2003.

The same thing happened also in the crew, which recorded an increase of 10.97 percent. So far this year 2011 the city reached 73 cruises with 172,251 passengers and 48,658 crew members, which have left the city economy about 34 billion pesos. According to information from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, in 2007 Colombia reached 99 vessels with 126,890 passengers in 2008, 161 ships arrived with 228,221 visitors, in 2009, reached 204 with 324,581 passengers last year and peaked of 267 ships with 401,008 cruise tourism.

In 1974 the countries of Argentina and Uruguay built a hydroelectric dam on the Uruguay River for power generation to both countries. The highly oxygenated and nutrient rich waters downstream from the dam created the perfect habitat for many river fish to flourish, specially the Golden Dorados. Soon after the dam started generating power the area became an outstanding fishery for these great river fighters. With close regulation from the river authorities, this fishery remains today one of the best Dorado fisheries in the world. On a recent trip my wife Roberta and I caught an average of 20 fish per day with an average weight of 10 lbs. and the largest being 38 lbs. As you can probably tell from the photos, Roberta caught the largest ones. All fishing is done with artificial lures and flies. Natural baits are not allowed. Also, all fishing is catch and release. This is the way that the authorities have preserved this great fishery. On our way to El Salto we spent a few days touring Buenos Aires, where we had a great time. FLEETS OF THE NEW WORLD (Part II) By Clement Atia It was about a period for over 200 years when Spanish fleet sailed east from the New World laden with treasures consisting of gold and silver bars, coins of different values all gold and silver and jewels, marine pearls as well as emeralds. If you read my previous article on Sun and Sea Magazine, and you will realize that Spain depended on those treasures to maintain their power and pay for their wars. So it was vital for the Crown to ensure the arrival of each of these ships to Spanish soil. For this purpose artillery fleets were able to take on pirates and privateers who displayed courage and cunning to capture at all costs any of these floating treasures during their long journey to Europe. But there was a stronger and more powerful enemy that the worst pirates of the Caribbean at that time, and were tropical cyclones and coral reefs of the Caribbean coast and Florida. In 1715 the great silver fleet, consisting of 12 ships, six Spanish from Panama, five of the new fleet, and one led by a Frenchman, left Havana with a load of about six million, according to the inventory of the time, and a similar number of contraband without inventory,
as we know today. This made them coveted prey for ambitious pirates and, in turn, potential shipwrecks, since they were twice as heavy and over loaded to navigate and maneuver. Just six days after having left the Havana Bay, the fleet was hit by a fierce storm that pushed her to the starboard shore lowlands, where one by one, the galleons were destroyed and turned their burden on the sand and reefs a few meters from the shore. Only the ship captained by Frenchman was able to overcome the huge waves and offshore sailing days could reach a safe port. It saved about 1500 sailors and crew
thanks to the proximity of the coast managed to swim to shore, but a thousand were drowned. Although the survivors tried as soon as they could organize a bailout of the load using divers Indians, much of it could not be recovered and remain there, buried under tons of sand. Currently located only six of the eleven galleons of that fleet of 1715, and although some companies have the rights to the search and recovery of its treasures, the other part of them was dragged to the bank is legally available to all, and is known that more than half of the total charge of the fleet is there, in at least six different areas waiting for people like you and me. In the next edition of Sol y Mar Magazine, I will show the places along our coast where with patience you would be able to find coins and relics of the sadly defunct Silver Fleet of 1715.

Since the first explorers arrived in the new continent and found what they called “forests in the sea�, where the natives dug oysters and fish began to develop multiple activities related to it. Its location along the coastal zone where occurred much later human settlement has led to an inevitable deterioration of the same, so far occurred in the last 50 years a loss of almost half of existing ones.
Which are in reality these “forests in the sea�? Plant formations in which we find different species of mangrove, a tree with branches down and rooted in the soil. The mangrove has the feature of being resistant to water salinity, developed in plains and coastal wetlands, lagoons and estuaries around or near the mouths of rivers. Mangroves have a fairly wide geographical distribution appearing in the coasts of many tropical and subtropical areas of the world between 25 degrees north and 25 degrees south latitude and can be found in 100 countries, although its extent is limited, since only occupy a narrow strip flood plain by the sea depending on the amplitude of the tides. The importance of mangroves is not only economic but also biological and socio-cultural. It is notable for its high productivity and production of organic matter and biodiversity and their submerged roots provide
habitat and shelter for a rich fauna of fish, mammals and invertebrates, constitute true natural nursery. Many of these species are born in nearby ecosystems such as sea grass beds or coral reefs and their larvae and juveniles develop under its roots, ensuring the sustainability of fisheries and sport fisheries. The mangrove is home to nesting areas and provides shelter to a considerable number of species of resident and migratory birds, threatened or endangered species, protect shorelines from erosion and storm surges caused by hurricanes, trap sediment and litter from their roots and help to fill and restore land. They are important for education and scientific research are also used for passive recreation, tourism and mining as a source of wood to make charcoal, build fences and traps for fishing. Even knowing all the benefits 75% of mangroves have been destroyed and those remaining are in danger of disappearing.

Fhotos Pat Ford Captain Bill Curtis, the dean of Florida flats fishing guides was inducted into the IGFAs LEGENDARY CAPTAINS & CREW Hall of Fame of Feb 18. Bill was the 6th person to ever receive this award which acknowledges his contribution to sport fishing on a worldwide basis. Bill began guiding in Miami in 1958 specializing in bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook. In 1968 he was the guide for Curt Gowdy’s American Sportsman TV show which was the first ever to display a flats fishing trip in south Florida. This one show basically put Florida’s flats fishing ‘on the map’. In 1974 Bill invented the poling platform that is now standard equipment on all flats boats. Years later, taking a cue from Trout Unlimited, Bill formed Bonefish and Tarpon Unlimited which has since evolved into the Bonefish& Tarpon Trust and gained worldwide recognition. Bill continued to guide into his 80s but has since retired. These days he can be found in the Fly Department at Bass Pro Shops in the Dolphin Mall in North Miami. Stop and chat with this living legend the next time you visit Bass Pro. The just aren’t making Bill Curtis anymore.

Cast after cast, mile upon mile, with endless days of fishing canals and flats; I never get enough! Is it the wildlife or the multitude of colors from the sunrise and sunset over an infinite expansion of beautiful waters, or the escape to this peaceful, serene setting? Is it the challenge of the fight, or the thrill of the catch? Maybe, it’s the love of tournament competition that drives me to return. Whatever it may be, it’s my drug, and I want more. Bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee is on fire this year! We’re recording tournament high weighed bags for five fish at 35 pounds per bag. That’s a seven pounds average per bass! Down in South Florida fishing in the Glades is getting better daily as the falling water levels continue to concentrate the fish into canals. Get ready because the 100 bass days are going to be back again! My favorite technique for catching large numbers of fish is working a Venom Sing worm on a 3/0 owner z neck hook tied to a 14 or 20 pound braid. Another great way to catch them is by burning (reeling fast) a zoom Horny Toad across the surface. The bite on those can be amazing; I’ve seen bass turn complete flips while trying to catch one!. If you are new to Bass fishing there is no better way to learn this sport than with an experienced guide.
