WELCOME So, why are you here? Are you already committed to leading positive social change? Do you wish to connect with unlikely allies to innovate and collaborate in new ways? Perhaps you are curious and would like to learn more? Whatever your reason for being here, we warmly welcome you and look forward to getting to know you over the 10 days of the Festival. Through this unique series of events, we aim to create and nurture a society that works for all; a society that is healthier, stronger, and with more capacity to thrive for our current and future generations. The Social Impact Festival is hosted by the Centre for Social Impact at the UWA Business School. It celebrates initiatives bringing about positive social change across the themes of Home, Land, and Place. Bringing together more than 200 cutting-edge international and local speakers, community leaders, artists, and organisations, this multi-faceted festival far goes beyond talking about the major issues confronting our society. When addressing our most pressing challenges and shaping a future that works for all, there is no overnight solution. Instead, through this Festival, we would like you all to take the opportunity to slow down, carefully listen and observe, be open to shifting your perceptions, and allow insights to emerge.

WELCOME TO THE SOCIAL IMPACT FESTIVAL 2017. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE JOURNEY.

WELCOME The University of Western Australia has been serving our communities for over 100 years. We do this not only by offering high-quality education and performing cutting-edge research, but also by broad engagement with the intellectual, cultural and social life of citizens within our State and beyond. With more than 50 events taking place over 10 days, the Social Impact Festival 2017 provides a platform for us to share some of our knowledge, ideas and insights for tackling the complex social issues of our time. This unique event is also an inspiring demonstration of our Centre for Social Impact’s commitment to driving positive social change. It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the UWA grounds and to the Social Impact Festival 2017. Professor Dawn Freshwater Vice Chancellor, The University of Western Australia I can think of no finer reason for a festival than celebrating everything that is social impact. It is what drives us in our work and in our lives as we strive to achieve social change for disadvantaged Australians. It is fitting then, that this year’s festival has grown bigger and better than we all could ever have imagined. Hundreds of people will come together over ten days to collaborate, discover, exchange ideas, celebrate initiatives, and delve deeply into understanding and creating meaningful social impact. Congratulations to the team at CSI UWA, and congratulations to you for being part of a movement to create social change. Welcome to the 3rd Annual Social Impact Festival. Professor Kristy Muir CEO, Centre for Social Impact Lotterywest plays a unique role in Western Australia in that we’re State Government owned. That means for every dollar you spend on Lotto games, there is a direct return to our community. Lotterywest is pleased to support the Social Impact Festival given its focus on creating a ‘stronger, healthier, more thriving society’ and exploring ways to more directly address the most pressing needs in our community. Susan Hunt PSM CEO, Lotterywest

THEMES OF THE FESTIVAL HOME

LAND

“Social justice requires that everyone have a right to a home. In rich countries like the UK, and Australia, there is simply no excuse for anyone to suffer the trauma of homelessness. Homes offer humans a place to be and are critical for living a life of dignity.”

“We need collective action to restore resilient landscapes and build strong local economies for our future generations. It’s critical that we inspire transformation and innovations that are owned by local stakeholders and supported by science.”

Professor Suzanne Fitzpatrick, Director of the Institute for Social Policy, Housing, Equalities Research at Heriot-Watt University (UK); appearing in Impact School on 19 July

Dieter van den Broeck, Science & Education, Commonland (Netherlands); appearing in Impact School on 21 July

PLACE “Place matters. Communities and neighbourhoods have immense impact on the people in them - on their wellbeing, sense of belonging, and their chances in life. Places need to be made to work for the people in them, ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive.” Professor Keith Kintrea, Professor of Urban Studies and Housing at University of Glasgow (UK); appearing in Impact School on 26 July Photo: Australian Urban Design Research Centre

FESTIVAL OPENING: SOWING THE SEEDS FOR CHANGE 6PM – 8.30PM | OCTAGON THEATRE, UWA

Fire is used in Australia to nourish soil and stimulate the release of seeds for natural growth and regeneration. In this event, you’ll experience sparks of inspiration that ignite your passion to drive positive social change. In last year’s Festival Opening we heard Dr Noel Nannup remind us that the purpose of being human is to care for everything. This year’s Festival Opening is our chance to prepare the conditions that we all need to create positive change. Join us to journey through the landscapes of Western Australia, hear stories of our past and present, and celebrate caring for our place. We welcome Vice Chancellor of The University of Western Australia Professor Dawn Freshwater to open this event and Dr Richard Walley OAM to perform the Welcome to Country. Hear from CEO of The Centre for Social Impact Professor Kristy Muir and Dr Noel Nannup, as well as performances by Delson Stokes, the Hammond

Park Primary School Choir, and Dwayne Mallard (Arjaway), to set the tone for the rest of the Festival and its impact for years to come.
