Letter from the editor So6ix staff members have had a fun month preparing the “Nightlife” August issue. Summer is coming to a close, but the excitement of summer nights doesn’t have to end. We have ventured through numerous bars and nightclubs in the Oklahoma City metro area, and we are providing you with reviews and pictures from more than a dozen of the hottest spots for fun, food, drinks, and music. Oklahoma City continues to support clubs and bars that have been local favorites for years, as well new, fun places that are continually popping up as Oklahoma City remains on its path of expansion. Each place we reviewed has something unique to offer, so enjoy your read, and find some new places to hang out for nightlife fun. A member of our staff also took a

Aquarius Between the 8th and the 11th, Mercury and the Sun emphasise close relationships, but you’re trying to find balance between feeling that you’re too demanding and that you simply want some fairness and harmony as part of the overall deal. If you don’t ask for something, you’re never going to get it. Older relationships are also highlighted through this cycle, but there could be a little tension or aggression as part of some negotiation or agreement. Pisces You create a good solid basis for communication with the one you love most between the 9th and the 12th. What’s Wrong Here?
Searching for love can be difficult and frustrating, especially when one relationship after another continually fails. You begin to wonder if there is even someone out there? The answer to that question, my friends, is “yes.” The real questions that should be asked are: Am I looking in the right place? Am I the one who is doing something wrong? It is easy for us to automatically put the blame other things for our failure and frustration. The same concept applies in relationships. Let’s look at a couple things that might help you in your search for that perfect someone. The first question: Am I looking in the right place? Despite the fact that the theme of this month’s issue is nightlife, if clubs and bars are where you are looking to find a potential mate, chances are you’re probably going to end up heartbroken and used. Why you ask? Because that is a scene where people are just out to have fun and are simply looking for

a good time; it is not to find a romantic relationship. Sure, that guy you meet there may say all the right things and promise you the world, but we all know what his ultimate goal is and it’s not long term. And yeah, that girl may make you feel like a stud, think she’s all about you, and showers you with compliments as she enjoys free drink after free drink and leaves without even asking for your name or your number. Let’s face it; the party scene is for fun, not for love. Try looking at places like church, friendly get-togethers, online dating, and other harmless activities where people are being real. The second question: “Are you the problem?” Like I said earlier, it’s easy to blame other things, but rarely do we ever look at our own actions and thought patterns. Maybe you are the person who keeps leading others on, starting arguments, being clingy, or just simply not knowing what you want. Next time you begin dating someone and things begin to go wrong, before you blame them or something else for the problems, look at what you might be doing or not doing to screw things up. Take a look at your dating history and patterns. Is it always the same reason for failure? If it is, then most likely you are the one that is the problem. Dating can be hard, especially when you’re looking for true love, but it can be easier. First, pay attention to where you are looking for that special someone because the wrong places will bring about the wrong results. You wouldn’t go to the grocery store to buy a hammer would you? Second, don’t be so hasty to blame other things for failure in a relationship. Pay attention to your dating history, find the repeating problems, and swallow your pride and check yourself first before blaming others. Following these simple things may not guarantee love, but it will most certainly make your search easier.

six picks cool summer cocktails Summertime is working overtime this year. It’s one of the hottest we’ve had in some time. You may not be able to beat this heat, but make a few of the drinks below, and you’re certain to feel a bit better about it! Whether you’re flying solo or entertaining for a crowd, we’ve got you covered.
HURRICANE Debuted at the 1939 New Orleans World Fair, this drink was immortalized by Big Easy club owner Pat O’Brien when he found himself with way too much rum on his hands right after the end of Prohibition. Although named for the hurricane shaped glass it is customarily served in rather than the weather disaster, this is a sneaky drink. This is a sweet, sweet libation, so you can’t even taste the rum if it’s properly made. The traditional garnish for this drink is a maraschino cherry and an orange slice. It is served on the rocks. 2 ounces light rum 2 ounces dark rum 1 ounce orange juice juice of one ½ lime 1 tablespoon simple syrup 1 ounce grenadine
WATERMELON-BASIL MOJITO
SANGRIA
This is a refreshing twist on an old favorite, particularly good right now when watermelon is at its peak freshness. For an even sweeter drink, you can add one ½ ounce of watermelon liqueur or schnapps.
This Spanish punch is no fuss and no muss. White or red sangria can be made in no time at all. Perfect for large gatherings, many pitchers can be made ahead of time. Sangria is so much fun to make because you can individualize each batch, using your favorite fruits or seasonal picks.
1/3 cup fresh watermelon chunks 1 ounce fresh lime juice 1 ounce simple syrup 4 basil leaves and a few more for garnish 1 ½ ounces light rum splash of club soda Simple syrup is, well, very simple to make. Dissolve 2 cups of sugar in 2 cups of water over medium heat. Let the mixture cool, refrigerate it, and use it as needed. In a cocktail glass, muddy the melon, lime juice, basil leaves, and syrup. Add the rum, and the schnapps or liqueur if you like. Top it off with crushed ice and club soda, then mix well from the bottom up. Pretty up this sweet thing with a basil leaf and a piece of watermelon rind.

Squeeze the juice from the fruit wedges into the wine and add the sugar, simple as that. It’s not unheard of to add a jigger of rum, gin, or brandy into the mix for an extra kick. Strawberries, kiwi, blueberries and peaches tickle your fancy? Throw them in as well. Chill the mixture overnight. When you’re ready to serve it, pour in about a half liter of club soda. For a sweeter wine punch, use citrus soda or ginger ale instead of seltzer. White sangria needs a tad more sugar, let’s say 2/3 of a cup. Gewurztraminer is a perfect wine for a white sangria. It’s light, reasonably priced, and it smells like roses. Riesling, Chardonnays and Pinot Gris are great as well. GROWN FOLKS’ LEMONADE Another crowd pleaser, this ‘lemonade’ can be whipped up in mere minutes. 15 ounces vodka 7 ounces triple sec ½ can lemon-lime soda 4 ounces fresh lemon juice ½ cup sugar sweet and sour
Toss into your pitcher the vodka, triple sec, soda, and lemon juice. Pour sweet and sour mix in until it’s about halfway full. Stir in the sugar and serve it over ice. Two or three splashes of grenadine will sweeten it up a bit more if you like.
2 ounces vodka juice of one ½ lemon 1 teaspoon powdered sugar club soda
Into a shaker with ice go the vodka, sugar, and lime juice. Pour it into a Collins glass filled with ice and top it off with soda water. STRAWBERRY-COCONUT DAQUIRI Summer wouldn’t be as fun without a gooey blender drink, would it, ladies? This concoction is a skinny drink of only 100 calories. 2 ½ cups strawberries, fresh or frozen (not thawed) 3 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons lime juice 3 cubes ice, give or take ¾ cup Malibu or other coconut flavored rum
Blend all ingredients but the ice and rum until smooth. Whip in the ice and rum until it’s good and frothy. This recipe makes about six drinks. It’s easy to keep your calorie consumption in check without killing your buzz by making sure you always use freshly squeezed fruit juice instead of prepared. Also, use sugar and simple syrup to taste, regardless of how much the recipe actually calls for.
VODKA COLLINS Well, the oldies are still around for a reason: They are classics. The Vodka Collins is easy on the waistline as well, weighing in at around 160 calories.

Of summer, A look at okc’s micro-festivals Not that long ago it seemed the only hot spots for outdoor music in Oklahoma City were the beautiful Zoo Amphitheater and the many stages at our acclaimed yearly arts festivals. Now that our city is growing both materially and culturally, many monthly micro-festivals have sprung up that always please this time of year. A wide range of local musicians await you at these venues along with a chance to connect with the arts community as a whole. Family friendly arenas, these gatherings feature food, a host of kids activities, and a platform for young local talent of all shades and stripes. Devon Energy is generously sponsoring its Sunday Twilight Concert Series on the Grand Lawn of the newly revamped Myriad Gardens downtown. Bring picnic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs with you and lounge to the best sounds around as the sun sets on pretty Oklahoma City. Every Sunday night from 7-8:30pm you can be wowed by Oklahoma’s best performers. Variety act Shortt Dogg has something for everyone to enjoy on August 7th. If funk, blues, and reggae move you, don’t miss the Flatland Travelers on the 14th. Soothing choral music comes on the 21st, and the season winds down with the groovy Latin fusion music of Tekumbe on August 28th. The Myriad Gardens have only been around since 1988, a long time coming from a 1960’s dream of the famed architect I. M. Pei. The Gardens have just gone through a fabulous refurbishing, housing thousands of plants from six different countries. The Crystal Bridge has been gloriously repaneled by Project 180. The seventeen acres of flora now include restaurants, a dog park, a skating rink, and a 35-foot waterfall. The piece de resistance is of course the new amphitheater, where you’ll be enjoying the sweet sounds of local talent these summer Sundays.

Live on the Plaza is an art walk extravaganza happening on the second Friday of each month from 7-11pm. The Plaza District suffered a downturn in the 70’s, but is now the most progressive arts district in Oklahoma City. The Plaza was the first air-conditioned theater in our state when it opened in 1935, and it presently houses our beloved Lyric Theatre. This district is rich with new galleries like DNA and the Convergence Collective Arts Space. You’ll almost always find the rising young star Matt Josef painting away in his studio as well. Atomic Dogs and Big Truck Tacos are fixtures here, so stop by and tap your feet in the street: It’s dinner and a show. We’re all excited about Classen Curve, a sleek and upscale addition to Oklahoma City. On the first Thursdays of August and September from 6-8pm, you can enjoy live music here hosted by the many businesses nestled in the Curve. Past acts have included Oxford Town, the Aguilar Brothers Band, and the Famous Americans. The Sugar Free All Stars will be giving a show on August 13th at 10:30am beside Uptown Kids The shops stay open until 9pm on festival nights, and the retailers offer special bargains and discounts. Basics: Part one
If you have overwhelming debts, bankruptcy may be one of many options to pursue to get a fresh start to your financial life. The concept of bankruptcy is ancient; Chapter Fifteen of the Book of Deuteronomy is the basis for the modern law. The founders of our country thought bankruptcy protection was important enough that bankruptcy is specifically listed as one of Congress’ jobs in our Constitution. If you have overwhelming debts as the result of job loss, uninsured medical expense, cut in pay, divorce, etc., there is nothing illegal or immoral about accepting the financial fresh start offered by law. Chapter 7 bankruptcy is the most common type of bankruptcy and is the Chapter that most people associate most closely with a “bankruptcy.” In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the person filing a bankruptcy, a debtor, surrenders any paid off non-exempt assets (boats, RVs, Picassos, gold bars) and receive a discharge of all unsecured debts. Prior to filing a bankruptcy, debtors have to show proof that they have completed a credit counseling class. There is another class required prior to finalizing the case. In the Petition and attached schedules filed with the Court, the debtor(s) have to provide: a list of all creditors and the amount and nature of their claims, the source, amount, and frequency of the debtor’s income, a list of all of the debtor’s property, and a detailed list of the debtor’s monthly living expenses, i.e., food, clothing, utilities,

taxes, medicine, etc. Most of the property listed by debtors will also be “exempt.” That means that creditors cannot take the property to pay for debts. In Oklahoma, this includes your homestead, 100 chickens, wages, and a host of other items. Most importantly for most debtors, filing a petition under Chapter 7 “automatically stays” (stops) most collection actions against the debtor or the debtor’s property. This prevents creditors from suing debtors or continuing lawsuits, wage garnishments, or even telephone calls demanding payments. After the filing is completed, in most cases the heavy lifting is over. Between twenty and forty days after the filing, the trustee will schedule a meeting where the debtor(s) have to attend and verify that they didn’t lie in their petition or schedules, that they really are the people that filed the case, that they don’t expect to win the lottery soon, and the creditors have a chance to come and ask questions of the debtors. We’ll be covering other Chapters of the Bankruptcy Code in upcoming articles; if you have any questions about bankruptcy, please call qualified counsel. This is a very complex area of law and not an area where people should try to represent themselves. Perfecting the Party: Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto In an industry in which success is hard fought and longevity is a rarity, the reinvention of self is an absolute necessity. Internationally renowned DJ and producer, Paul Oakenfold, could easily be considered the reigning king of reinvention and a musical trailblazer that has transcended the hands of time. Recently, Oakenfold and I chatted about life, Las Vegas, and music as we toured through Rain Nightclub at the Palms Casino and Resort. The two-time Grammy nominated DJ and producer began his musical career at the age of 16 in London. After DJing in Covent Garden, London throughout the late 1970’s, Oakenfold made the major move to New York City. He soon found himself working for Def Jam and Profile Records as an A&R rep in which he would sign such artists as Salt N’ Pepa and DJ Jazzy Jeff and, then newcomer, Will Smith. After a stint as a promoter and agent for the Beastie Boys and Run D.M.C. throughout the mid-80’s, Oakenfold would find yet another reinvention of self in the most unexpected place. In 1987, he would visit the island of Ibiza to celebrate his birthday. The island is renown for its summer parties and amazing dance following. It would be here that he introduced the world to his nowfamous Balearic trance sound and truly make his mark as a producer. After two decades of producing hits for superstars such as Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, U2, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, and many more, Oakenfold made the decision to take his first U.S. residency at Rain nightclub with Planet Perfecto on Saturday nights. Considering Perfecto to be just another event at a nightclub would be an injustice. In a city in which the incredible can appear mundane, Oakenfold says, “The average Vegas clubgoer is spoiled.” With this in mind, he created something that would leave even the most experienced partier in awe and craving more.

Perfecto is far more than just a Saturday night at a nightclub. Aerialists, characters, and planets take you on a dream-like trip. Promoting underground dance music with a show like no other, Oakenfold says, “We take you on a journey through a musical galaxy. We are adding something different to Vegas. Be Bright and Bold! Downtown Oklahoma City has come such a long way this past decade. The development of Bricktown with all of the new restaurants, Thunder games, and nightclubs makes our state’s capital a hopping place. Whether you are meeting some friends or going out to party, you always want to dress to impress. Here are some suggestions on what to wear and what NOT to wear when heading out for a night on the town. Nightlife is dark as is, so by wearing summer’s top bright colors like orange, pink, green, and blue you’ll be sure to stand out. These colors aren’t to be minimized to shirts and dresses only. Dress yourself from head to toe. Bold color combos are sure to be spotted at club entrances and bars. Even just playing with color blocking can be great if done correctly. partake in this latest trend. If you’re feeling dangerous, snakeskin is sure to portray the vibe. One of my personal favorites, white, is back. The classic little black dress can now be replaced by a little white dress. A lightly starched white button up shirt untucked with a great pair of shorts is a great look for a guy this summer. White also enhances the tan you’re most likely working on at weekends by the pool or at the lake. Pairing turquoise accessories with white is a fun way to sport this new look, as well as any metallics. If there’s one thing you can keep from this past season, it’s florals. They’re here to stay, at least for now. If you don’t own any of these spring fashion trends, I advise you to make some purchases. If you’re in the trendy scene, you must fit the part. It’s summer, so show some skin. Opt for shorts, skirts, and dresses over pants. And by some skin I mean some; remember to keep a little skin hidden for the imagination. However, if you’re partial to pants, the ‘70s are back and they’ve brought along the flared jeans look. The main thing to remember when going out this summer is to feel good in whatever clothes you choose. Hopefully, I have given you a few tips to keep you at the front of the VIP line and not being overlooked. Above all, don’t forget to rock the OKC nightlife 2011 in style!

Should You Crowdsource Your Job Search with Social Media? Crowdsourcing is defined as outsourcing a task typically to a group of people instead of a single individual. And when it comes to social media, crowdsourcing your job search could be an effective solution. Are you willing to take the risk? I saw this great video and blog post from DJ Waldow (@djwaldow) and his Job Search Social Media Experiment, titled #projectawesome on Twitter. DJ was laid off from his marketing and community job at Blue Sky Factory on July 1st, 2011. Like most people when they receive news like this, he had a choice: either do something or do nothing. DJ chose the former. He used his contacts and relationships to create a 4-minute video testimonial that he has posted on his blog as well as YouTube from some of the most influential online marketers and social media thinkers. DJ is being very open with his job search and relying on testimonials and crowd sourcing techniques to fuel interest from employers and elevate his job search. Creative job search tactics have received good press since the recession in 2008. I’ve seen more stories on people who have used billboards, sandwich boards, and even sell themselves on ebay to find work. DJ’s approach fits his industry (marketing and social media) and demonstrates his expertise and credibility not just because of the testimonials, but also because of the quality of edited video that he put together. DJ uses different versions of his resume to appeal to different audiences, while elevating his blog post at the top of search engines — YouTube and slide share. The concept of crowd sourcing your resume is one that I like. It’s smart. It bypasses the traditional long and often frustrating job search and interview evaluation

process. His hope is to reach a company or industry influencer without using an applicant tracking system or working with the first point of contact, usually the HR professional or recruiter. Early case studies like this are interesting because they make use of social media and the micro celebrity in a new and interesting way. The stigma that is sometimes still associated with being laid off by prospective employers is lessened because he is able to demonstrate his own skills in action as an online and social media marketer. The question is: how can you use social media to elevate your job search? Can crowdsourcing tactics help or hurt your job search outside of the social media and marketing industries? Have you built an effective social network community with influencers online who, when the time comes, will share your story and recommend you to their friends and business contacts? The August professional of the month is Heather Goldsby. She is a registered dental hygienist currently working at Elite Smiles for Michelle Sanor D.D.S. Heather was born and raised in Edmond, OK. She began working as a dental assistant her freshman year in college to help put herself through school and gain knowledge into the dental field. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Oklahoma in 2004. Heather knew after graduating high school that she wanted to earn her degree as a dental hygienist. Heather’s dental hygienist from her youth was the person responsible for pushing Heather into the dental profession. She always spoke very highly about her career and thought Heather would be a great fit for the profession. Heather truly loves her job and takes great pride in treating patients. Her desire to help others and affect healthy change is the number one personal need that is satisfied by her role as a dental hygienist. Her job also allows her to develop long-lasting relationships with her patients. Heather said, “I truly enjoy getting to know my patients on a personal level. Getting to know one another personalizes the experience and helps the patient feel comfortable during their appointment.” She also values the flexibility and level of independence that is associated with the profession from number of working days per week to the particular hours worked. A dental hygienist’s job can be complex when you take into account the variety of patients seen on a daily basis. Every patient presents a unique educational opportunity concerning the importance of good oral care. The continual sharing of knowledge is the most important part of her job. Heather said, “As a dental hygienist, I take into account the entire person, not just the mouth. The overall person, personality, and medical history have to be considered. Knowing all I can about a patient helps me to communicate better and make the patient feel more at ease in the chair.” Heather tries to stress the importance of oral health in correlation to overall health. Helping patients to attain more knowledge about their oral health can truly save lives. In the future, Heather hopes that the community, though media and medical doctors, will be more aware of the health complications that can take place if oral care is ignored. “I love my job.
