Editor’s Note

March/April 2014

Rarely does a day go by that I don’t give thanks for good health. Like most of us, I’ve watched loved ones suffer through some difficult medical conditions. For Jane Sullivan Horne and son Trey Sullivan, pictured on our cover, a healthy future is something they’ve never been able to take for granted. In one of the more remarkable stories we’ve shared with Laker Magazine readers, writer Kimberly Dalferes tells how mother and son — both afflicted with a rare genetic kidney disorder — have relied on the generosity of family members for lifesaving treatment (Page 82).

In November, Alicia Ossi-Kaufman (left) and her mom, Betty Ossi, of Cary, N.C., and Union Hall took the Laker to San Antonio, Texas, where they posed for this photo in front of the Alamo, site of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. According to thealamo.org, more than 2.5 million people each year visit the complex, which houses exhibits on the Texas Revolution and other Texas history. The family traveled to Texas with Alicia’s husband, William Kaufman, to attend the 20th Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.

In September, Bill and Mary Wilson of Moneta traveled to Italy, Croatia and Greece, where they took this photo at the Acropolis in Athens. The couple said they had so much fun, they’re already planning a return trip to Europe for later this year.

Theresa and Don Bruce of Union Hall cruised in September to the Caribbean. The couple posed for this photo with the September/October 2013 issue of the Laker in St. Thomas, which along with St. Croix and St. John, makes up the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In September, lake residents Ruthie Phillips, Sandy Furick, Doreen Faga, Laurie Testa and Karen McCarty traveled to Santa Fe, N.M. The group participated in a Road Scholar program, which included attending the Santa Fe School of Cooking. “Lots of friendship and laughter for all,” said Karen.

Randy and Debora Scott of Moneta took the Laker on a trip last fall to Italy, including a stop in the region of Cinque Terre, where they took this photo overlooking Vernazza. “We spent 14 days traveling all over Italy, starting in Lake Como, then heading to Milan, Florence, Cinque Terre, Rome, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast,” Debora said. “Awesome trip!”

Townhouse Transformed

After puchasing a 25-year-old property at The Water’s Edge, Buddy and Pamela Smith turned to the lake’s most seasoned interior designer to give it a total overhaul.

hen Pamela and Buddy Smith built their 6,500-squarefoot house at The Water’s Edge in the 1990s, they had no doubt it would be their permanent retirement home. With all the necessities — kitchen, master suite, laundry room — on the main level, why wouldn’t it? But when Buddy fell ill last year and maintenance of the home, yard, sandy beach and dock got to be too much, the couple went searching for an alternative. One criterion they weren’t willing to Kris Willard budge on was location. “We wanted to stay at The Water’s Edge because we love it here,” said Dr. Pamela Smith, former medical director for Centra Medical Group’s Gretna facility who now works as an internist in Wilmington, N.C., where the couple keeps a second home. “We found this townhouse and thought it would be a great compromise because it’s totally maintenance-free.” There was just one problem. The 25-year-old lakefront property was in dire need of renovation. With no time to manage such a major undertaking, the Smiths turned the project over to longtime lake-area interior designer Kris Willard, owner of Interiors by Kris. “I saw the townhouse in its original state, made my wish list, and asked Kris if it could be done,” Smith said. “She

took that and ran with it. I saw it when they first got started and didn’t come back until it was done.” Willard called on contractor Robert Arrington to help transform the 3,245-square-foot property. The renovation included removing walls to open up the foyer and main living area, overhauling the kitchen, enclosing the screened porch, replacing all the floors and light fixtures and installing a new lower-level bar area. “We had worked with Kris on our previous home, loved her style and trusted her implicitly,” said Smith, who ditched dark and formal furnishings for a more light and casual design in the townhouse. “Having that trust made the project stress-free. We had faith that she would do it the way she would have done it for her own home. We could not be happier with the outcome.” Started in July, the renovation was complete by midNovember, in time for the Smiths to spend Thanksgiving at the lake. The couple said they are looking forward to warmer weather and their first summer in the new space. “My husband is really loving being able to sit back and enjoy the lake,” Smith said of Buddy, retired from a career in distribution management. “He’s happy to let someone else worry about the landscaping, the bushes, the roof, the painting — all of it.”

Kitchen b e f o r e The dark and dated kitchen had traditional white appliances and cabinets, limited counter space and a rooster decorating theme. The space was completely closed off to the foyer and living room, making it unconducive to entertaining.

a f t e r A wall separating the kitchen from the living room was removed to open up the space, take advantage of lake views and create a bar with additional seating and countertop space (top photo). Elegant Woodworks of Rocky Mount built and installed painted gray cabinets with a charcoal glaze. Willard chose Silestone quartz countertops in the color Lyra, glass subway tile for the backsplash and contemporary pendant lights. Duct work was rerouted so the soffit above the window (bottom photos) could be removed, allowing the cabinets to extend to the ceiling. Plantation shutters and stainless steel appliances, including a counter-depth refrigerator and gas range with decorative hood, completed the high-end look. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

sunroom b e f o r e A three-panel sliding-glass door led out to a screened-in porch that could only be used during warmer weather.

a f t e r Contractor Robert Arrington completely enclosed the space and installed a separate heating and cooling system, creating a year-round retreat. Sliding-glass French doors were installed and the floor raised so the room integrates seamlessly with the adjacent dining room (see photo on Page 24). For the furnishings, Willard used a comfortable couch covered in smoky blue chenile and a coordinating striped chair. At the request of homeowner Buddy Smith, the room also includes a leather recliner positioned to face a flat-screen TV mounted above the doors. “This is probably our favorite space,” said homeowner Pamela Smith. “We like to go out there with our morning coffee and enjoy the lake views.”

master bath b e f o r e The space featured outdated wallpaper and a bidet the homeowners weren’t interested in keeping. A huge tub dominated one corner of the room, resulting in limited space for the master closet.

a f t e r Willard reconfigured the entire space, moving the bathtub to where the toilet and bidet had been located and adding a frameless glass shower. Bench seating and a hand-held showerhead also were included to accommodate the homeowners’ needs. Contemporary fixtures and 24-inch tile with herringbone accents tie the space together. The redesign allowed for the addition of a vanity area with quartz-style stone countertops. By claiming some space from the adjacent study, the master closet doubled in size.

Lower-LeveL bar b e f o r e A small kitchenette with white cabinets was tucked into one corner. The area also included traditional furniture and carpet that didn’t appeal to the new homeowners.

a f t e r To create a consistent look throughout the home, Willard replaced the floors with the same wide-plank, handscraped wood used on the upper level. A masculine light fixture above the new game table was installed in place of an outdated ceiling fan. The kitchen area was transformed using dark maple cabinets with a sable finish, rainforest-green marble countertops and a tumbled marble backsplash accented with a tumbled version of the marble. An oversized wine cooler and expansive bar provide plentiful storage space for the Smiths’ collection of wine and barware.

Salvaged Storm from the

When Charlie Diederich realized the towering red oak at his lakeside home was dying, he searched for a meaningful way to repurpose its beauty.

t began on June 29, 2012, the day a powerful derecho howled across Smith Mountain Lake. A seriously destructive and deadly weather event, the storm packed high-speed winds that ripped great limbs off Charlie Diederich’s 120-foot red oak and hurled them into nearby trees. When the storm subsided, Diederich ventured outside to assess the damage. He knew immediately his treasured oak was severely injured. “I hoped to save the oak,” he said. “It was such a pretty tree.” But by the following spring, rot was setting in, and it was clear the tree was not going to make it. Diederich began racking his brain to figure out a use for the once majestic tree other than chopping it up for firewood. He remembered his neighbors, Bill and Anne Piatt, commissioned a local artist to carve an owl from a tree stump in their landscape. Perhaps Dwayne “Woodchuck” Hodges of Boones

Mill could turn the dying oak into a piece of art. While canoeing in the Boundary Waters of upper Minnesota, Diederich had seen a totem pole and realized that would be the perfect carving to take advantage of the height of the tree. He called in Hodges, and the two conferred. They decided the optimum height for the pole would be 20 feet from the base of the tree. Next, the two talked about the choice of animals for the carvings. They needed to decide how many could fit on the pole, and what creatures should be represented. Diederich said there was no question that the top would be a thunderbird, a dominant icon in Native American culture and art. But what others? “I’m not a Native American, and I’m not from the Northwest,” said Diederich, “so I wasn’t trying to mimic the authentic totem poles. I wanted my pole to be evocative of Smith Mountain Lake and include the local fauna.”

ABOVE From top, the wide wings of the thunderbird atop Charlie Diederich’s totem pole were a challenge to construct; an old tree stump carved into the shape of an owl at Bill and Anne Piatt’s home served as inspiration for the totem pole. RIGHT An owl and a beaver are among the colorful creatures represented. 38 March • April 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Ultimately, the choice of creatures was determined by the height and proportions of the tree stump. Including a bear was an easy decision because they are plentiful at the lake, and Hodges is known for his bear carvings. For the other figures, Diederich settled on an owl, representing the wisdom of the forest, and a beaver. “I had to have a water creature from the lake,” he said. “I considered a fish, a turtle or a frog, but we ran out of room.” Finding the thunderbird’s wings was the next challenge. To be in scale with the height and girth of the pole, they needed a two-inch thick board that was 20 inches wide and seven feet long. And the wood had to be poplar because it is lightweight but strong.

“I wanted my totem pole to be evocative of Smith Mountain Lake and include the local fauna.” Charlie DieDeriCh, homeowner

“A board like that is hard to find,” said Diederich, who talked to people at local sawmills but found little enthusiasm for the commission because they would have to do a special set-up to cut a board to that specification. Diederich’s friend, Ted Tsoleas, who owns a small saw mill in Bedford County, heard of the search for the perfect piece of lumber and happened to have it curing in his yard. It was dry and ready for use, and he offered it to Diederich. The thunderbird had its wings. Hodges’s partner, Amanda Abraham, did the finishing work on the sculpture. She used a fine router to carve out the details in the figures, and then painted them in bright colors, giving each animal a lively, fanciful appearance.

Inspired by the success of the totem pole, Diederich commissioned Hodges to carve two herons out of other dead trees in his landscape. Those he left unpainted so they wouldn’t compete with the colorful totems, he said. Now the winding path from Diederich’s house to the dock is a magical journey where the traveler enjoys surprise encounters with the long, lean birds before arriving at the totem pole near the water. At the driveway stands a bear carved from a log, standing on his hind legs, triumphant and proud with a big fish in its paw. His black bear coat was achieved by scorching the wood with a blowtorch. Diederich said his remote creek on the eastern end of the lake has become a destination for boaters, canoers and kayakers looking to find the totem pole that stands guard over the inlet. Lake residents and visitors may see the carvings, as well as Diederich’s extensively remodeled home, up close during the SML Charity Home Tour Oct. 10-12. mith Mountain Lake artist Shelly La Treill enjoys the challenge of turning a customer’s concept into the perfect piece of art. Only instead of paint and canvas, La Treill’s designs feature the colorful, reflective properties of stained glass. From her SER Art Stained Glass studio near Hales Ford Bridge, La Treill produces a wide variety of custom stained-glass and mixed-media artwork for residential and commercial clients all across the region. “A lot of times, I just get a list of words from clients trying to describe what they have in mind,” said La Treill. “I see it as a challenge to figure out how to put all their thoughts together in one pretty design that they can admire.” Before the glass is ever cut, La Treill follows a tedious process to ensure her clients will be happy with the finished product. It begins with the basics — a pencil and sketchpad. “I do a small-scale drawing by hand, even if it’s just a sketch. Then I scan it into the computer and add the glass color, which makes it [the drawing] a lot more realistic for showing the customer,” she said.

Various stained-glass creations (above) are on display at Shelly La Treill’s studio near Hales Ford Bridge, including a piece she made to decorate the side panel of the entrance door (below).

Once the client approves La Treill’s rendering, it moves from the computer to her design table. “I hand draw the computer image to full size, cut the glass according to the lines in the drawing and build it piece by piece,” she said. Grinding machines are used to smooth edges and file pieces to the correct shape. La Treill uses metal materials with specific properties to secure the glass pieces together. “Each edge of glass is wrapped with copper tape,” explained La Treill. “The metal structuring is made up of soft lead on the inside, which can be bent, and hard zinc on the outside to give it strength. The metal is soldered to the copper tape, and that is how you put all the pieces together.”

La Treill said stained glass captured her attention several years ago when she took a few classes at an art studio while living in Syracuse, N.Y. “I have always enjoyed painting and drawing, but the classes introduced me to stained glass. I loved it so much that I ended up working there [at the studio] more than six years producing stainedglass art,” she said. Twelve years ago, La Treill, her husband and son traded the harsh winters of upstate New York for Virginia’s milder climate, and La Treill rented studio space in Bedford. About a year ago, she decided to move into a larger, more visible location at Halesford Center on Virginia 122 to attract more lake locals and tourists. She said her productions

“I just think stained glass is beautiful, and when I met her [La Treill] and saw her work, I knew she was the artist I wanted to work with.” Connie Watson, seR aRt Client

vary by intricacy of design and materials used but, on average, cost $120-$165 per square foot. One of La Treill’s recent projects was for SML newcomers Rick and Connie Watson. The couple planned to commission a piece for the foyer of their new lakefront home. After visiting La Treill’s shop, Connie decided to look no further. “I just think stained glass is beautiful, and when I met her and saw her work, I knew she was the artist I wanted to work with,” she said. The Watsons wanted their artwork to be a reminder of all the places they have lived. With the artist’s help, they came up with icons of each place for La Treill to incorporate into the design. “We landed on a fleur-de-lis for New Orleans, a Celtic knot and thistle for Scotland, a lone star for Texas and the mountains and water for Smith Mountain Lake. Rick and I are thrilled with the design,” Watson said. Though most of her time is spent producing stained-glass designs for homes, businesses and churches, La Treill also enjoys passing the tricks of the trade on to students of all ages. When she can, she offers weekly workshops and invites students to use her studio space to work on their projects.

“It’s not something you can just set up on a craft table. You have to be careful of glass shards, of lead pieces and the machinery. It’s precarious for children and pets to be around these materials. You have to be clean, and it [creating the artwork] takes days to do,” she said. “After someone has taken a class, they gain a new appreciation for the time and work that goes into stained-glass art. It is the kind of work that I really enjoy, though.” To see more photos of La Treill’s artwork, including a series of nine stained-glass windows at Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta, visit serartstainedglass.com.

or Rusty and Judy Johnson, it’s the RV that makes them Lakers. Theirs doesn’t really travel; rather, it sits semipermanently on a leased lot at Halesford Harbour, just north of Hales Ford Bridge. The waterfront RV park includes a half-dozen sites intended for the 40-foot homes that get delivered on wheels, leveled, blocked up and embellished with decks, patios and landscaping. The Johnson’s 400-square-foot design includes a roomy kitchen with full-sized appliances, bath with shower, queen master bedroom and two loft sleeping areas for the couple’s two teenage grandchildren. The main living area includes a dining table, gas fireplace and two guest sleeper sofas, one of which can be curtained off for privacy. The Johnsons ordered their unit furnished, so it was rolled in virtually ready-to-occupy and with furniture

they knew would fit perfectly. The couple added a hot tub patio with a view of the adjacent marina and a front entry deck with space for outdoor furniture. “Rusty likes to greet passing neighbors from the entry deck,” Judy said. “Folks consider him the park’s unofficial ‘mayor.’” “In the past, we traveled to SML from our home in Waynesboro quite a bit, using a series of camper trailers for lodging,” said Rusty, an avid fisherman. “Now, as retirees with freedom to spend time wherever we wish, we wanted a year-round park with amenities and neighbors. “This is a fantasy-quality lake and a great RV park,” said Rusty, noting the available boat launch ramp, slips, beach, picnic area, laundry facilities and kid-friendly sports courts. “It’s got great facilities, is safe and you get to know the neighbors. There’s no compelling reason for us to vacation any place else.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

When parked, multiple sections on each side of Ken and Carolyn Salleys’ motorcoach slide out to create expanded living space.

“Getting situated for the night takes less time than checking into a hotel, and there’s no luggage to mess with.” Ken Salley, RV enthuSiaSt

Destination Driven

Some Lakers’ RVs, however, are made to roam, which is the case with the 40-foot diesel motor coach of Ken and Carolyn Salley, who have been traveling this way together for 15 years. “This is vehicle number five,” Ken said. “Each time, we’ve traded up for more comfort and convenience.” The current RV, a Tiffin Allegro that resembles the type of vehicle a touring musician might use, includes a king-size stateroom, washer and dryer, dishwasher, all-electric kitchen, on-demand hot water, standard-size refrigerator, four TVs, sound system, as well as rear-view and side-view cameras that feed images to the cockpit monitor. There are four sections that glide open at the touch of switches and provide 12 feet of width for the living room, kitchen and master bedroom. In 2012, the Salleys took their first caravan trip with Fantasy RV Tours, a travel agency for those who enjoy having arrangements and excursions

planned in advance. The trip involved theater, restaurants and sight-seeing in New York City, with the motor home moored at an RV park in nearby New Jersey to serve as base camp. “We’d return to our own bed every night,” Ken said. “Fantasy bused us in and out of the city and eliminated all the hassle. There were 25 other motor home couples in the group, so it was a social experience as well.” In 2008, the Salleys embarked on a 20-day self-organized tour of the Canadian Maritimes, relocating the RV every few days. “At 62-65 mph, the bus practically floats along the highway,” said Ken, noting that they tow an SUV to use for local transportation. “Getting situated for the night takes less time than checking into a hotel, and there’s no luggage to mess with. … We have traveled to 46 of the lower 48 states and plan to see the remaining two – North Dakota and Louisiana – soon.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

TAKEN WITH TOWABLES

Not all RVs are self-propelled, of course. Dan and Harriet Madar are among the many Lakers who enjoy hooking their RV to a tow vehicle and heading off on adventures. Throughout their 45 years of marriage, the Madars have camped in tents, a pop-up camper and several travel trailers. Their current RV is a 21-foot Forest River Flagstaff Superlite, which they haul with a pickup truck. “Our trailer has a bathroom, heat, A/C, microwave and real beds for four,” Dan said. “It’s definitely more comfortable than tent camping, where you’re sleeping on an air mattress or cots. The extra comfort makes camping more appealing, especially as we get older.” The Madars also enjoy their trailer’s open-out dining canopy which provides sheltered outdoor living space. “We both like being outside, hiking, fishing, sitting by a crackling fire. At Cape Cod [Mass.], we parked within walking distance from the beach, picked wild blueberries, and enjoyed visiting our boys,” said Dan, referring to the couple’s two adult sons, who both live in Massachusetts. Harriet fondly remembers and recommends camping for young families.

“Kids grow up loving it; it’s a great way to spend time together and introduce them to nature. Some campgrounds do offer nature programs for the kids who are guests,” she noted. In recent years, the Madars’ other RVing destinations have included Maine’s Acadia National Park; West Thompson Lake in Connecticut; Civil War sites near Gettysburg, Pa.; and Holiday Lake

State Park in Appomattox. They’re planning a trip to Nova Scotia later this year, along with additional treks to state parks in Virginia and West Virginia. “Sure, there’s a bit of planning involved, and some work in setting and breaking camp. But we have it down to a routine and enjoy that part as well,” Harriet said. “We’ll do this as long as we are physically able.”

KELLY HOTALINg, MAYO CLINIC

Story

LEFT Trey Sullivan and his mom, Jane Sullivan Horne, at her home on Smith Mountain Lake ABOVE Trey Sullivan (right) and cousin Adam Gray share a fist bump while cruising a hallway at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.

S

he had been here before, but not like this. This time was different. This time it was her son going into the operating room, not her. Like any parent, she would have done anything to trade places with her only child as he was wheeled away. And yet, she believed with all her heart that at the end of this long journey, her son would be healthy and strong again. It was a decade ago when Jane Sullivan Horne, a long-time resident of The Water’s Edge and successful area real estate agent, came to terms with something that had been passed on from her father. In addition to her bright smile and dazzling blue eyes, Horne also inherited a rare genetic disorder, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), which causes scar tissue to form in sections of the kidneys. As the scar tissue builds, the kidneys lose the ability

to filter and rid toxins from the body. As the disease progresses, dialysis often becomes necessary, as well as a kidney transplant. There is no known cure for FSGS. The full ramifications of the disease, renal failure, contributed to the death of Horne’s father when she was just 11 months old. Other family members also were affected: Horne’s grandmother and two of her father’s brothers died because of renal failure. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Horne said only 20 families in the United States have been documented with this particular genetic pattern that afflicts multiple generations. Because the genetic component of FSGS is not fully understood, the disease has skipped around and through Horne’s family with disquieted targeting. Family members can never be quite sure who will fall victim and the level of affliction can range widely. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

cOURTESY OF JANE SULLIvAN HORNE

Cousins Adam Gray and Trey Sullivan (front) receive support from (left to right) Lauren Fitzgerald, Gray’s fiance; David Gray and his wife, Susan Gray; Jane Sullivan Horne and husband Bill Horne.

“You cannot describe how it feels to get news like this about your child. There’s not a word. Gut-wrenching doesn’t even come close.” Jane Sullivan Horne, kidney tranSplant recipient

“Our family is very close,” Horne said. “Together we’ve experienced the devastating loss of someone we love, but we’ve also shared the joy of seeing life saved because of the love we have for each other. Most importantly, we share a strong faith; that bond has had the biggest impact of all.” In 1970, when kidney transplants were uncommon and considered somewhat experimental, Horne’s mother provided a kidney for Jane’s brother, James Gray. In 2003, when Horne found herself in need of a kidney transplant, it would be another brother, David Gray, who would become her lifeline and perfect match for the kidney she needed to survive. Horne never imaged that it would be David’s son who would someday save the life of her own son, Trey Sullivan. 84 March • April 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

The Diagnosis

In 2003, while Horne recuperated from her kidney transplant, news came unexpectedly that Sullivan, then a junior at Franklin County High School, would not be spared the disease. A routine sports physical revealed warning signs of a kidney problem. Further tests uncovered that, like his mother, Sullivan also carried the gene for FSGS. Horne said her worst fears had been realized. “You cannot describe how it feels to get news like this about your child,” she said. “There’s not a word. Gut-wrenching doesn’t even come close.” FSGS marches forward by its own timetable. The disease will progress, but the rate of kidney deterioration is not predictable. As with Horne, Sullivan’s need for a transplant could have extended

well into his 30s or 40s. However, Sullivan’s condition progressed much more rapidly, and by age 25, he found himself growing progressively weaker. Tests confirmed his overwhelming fatigue was indeed due to his kidneys beginning to fail. A transplant was necessary or Sullivan would need to start dialysis. In 2012, under the care and guidance of medical professionals at Mayo Clinic Hospital, the same Jacksonville, Fla., facility where Horne received her transplant, the process to find a living donor match for Sullivan began in earnest.

The MaTch

Finding the perfect living donor match for a kidney transplant is a meticulous process. There is no guarantee that if a relative shares your genetic DNA they will also be a viable candidate for organ donation. The process is far more intricate than the mere matching of blood types. “A careful history and physical examination is needed along with numerous medical tests to ensure safety for both donor and recipient,” said Dr. Martin L. Mai, a nephrologist at the Mayo Clinic. “Screening for antibodies in the recipient that could damage the new kidney, as well as testing the tissue match of the donor kidney, are important steps in the process.” Two of Sullivan’s first cousins were evaluated for compatibility and, when testing was complete, it was determined that one was a match. Adam Gray, the son of the brother who had donated his kidney to Horne 10 years prior, would now be doing the same to save Sullivan’s life.

what Is a lIvIng donor? A person who decides to donate an organ or part of an organ to another person, most often a relative or a friend, is referred to as a living donor. According to the National Kidney Registry, kidneys transplanted from living donors are superior because they last nearly twice as long as those transplanted from deceased donors. Donating a kidney not only helps the person who receives the kidney, but shortens the deceaseddonor wait list, helping another person get a deceased-donor kidney sooner. Also, all living donors are awarded points from the national registry so if they ever need a kidney later in life, they are given priority on the deceased-donor list. Jane Sullivan Horne and her brother, David Gray, prepare to film a video for Mayo Clinic promoting living organ donations. Ten years ago, Gray donated a kidney to his sister. In October, his son donated a kidney to her son.

helping raise awareness March is designated as National Kidney Month to promote kidney health and wellness, as well as raise awareness about kidney disease and prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 10 percent of adults in the United States over the age of 20 are living with chronic kidney disease. Each March, organizations such as The American Kidney Fund and The National Kidney Foundation

sponsor events and distribute information to help spread the word about kidney disease prevention and treatment. For more information, visit kidneyfund.org or kidney.org. There were initial setbacks. For example, an original transplant date for September 2013 had to be delayed more than a month when a blood test revealed Sullivan’s triglyceride levels were dangerously high far too high for a safe surgery. Finally, on Oct. 29, Horne, surrounded by family members and leaning heavily on husband Bill Horne, watched as both her nephew and her son were wheeled into operating rooms.

86 March • April 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

The transplant took approximately five hours and involved two teams of surgeons and medical professionals working in tandem. Of particular concern was the issue of Gray’s kidney having three renal arteries that had to be delicately reworked and spliced together in order to function properly in Sullivan’s body. Recovery, including the risk of infection, can be precarious for both donor and recipient.

“The living donor program takes the long wait for a transplant out of the equation, and saves lives every day. ... I hope our family story will encourage others to be living donors, as well.” Trey Sullivan, kidney TranSplanT recipienT

“Our family’s faith in God has also been handed down from generation to generation,” said Horne. “We have had so many people reach out and tell us our family is in their prayers. We believe that those prayers helped lift our boys and carry them through this surgery and recovery.” In just more than a week, Adam returned to his home in Colorado and resumed his normal schedule. The ease by which he was able to return to daily life is one of the most compelling rationales for living donor transplants, said David Gray. “About 28 percent of transplants are living donors,” he said. “If you think about it, it would be just great if that could be reversed. … It’s not that difficult.” For Sullivan, the recovery would take a bit longer. Doctors administered and adjusted antirejection drugs to ensure his now-functioning kidney continued to perform properly. Initially, Sullivan’s vital signs had to be checked daily, and then weekly. It would be another six weeks – just prior to the holidays – before the family would leave the refuge of the Mayo Clinic and staff members who had become like a second family. In January, Sullivan celebrated his 27th birthday at the lake with his parents. He is beginning the slow yet deliberate process of returning back to a “normal” life in Greenville, S.C., where he works as director of Internet sales and marketing at Bradshaw Automotive. Sullivan said thanks to the generosity of his cousin, he believes he has a new lease on life. “The living donor program takes the long wait for a transplant out of the equation, and saves lives every day,” Sullivan said. With balloons in tow, Trey “Though I waited a year for Sullivan leaves my transplant, in comparison, the Mayo receiving a kidney through Clinic in Florida the national kidney transplant following waiting list can take 3-5 years successful or more. I hope our family kidneystory will encourage others to transplant surgery. be living donors, as well.” COURTESY OF JANE SULLIvAN HORNE

Wine Storage

Story

by

Gordon Kendall

Follow this expert advice to help ensure your wine stays protected from environmental enemies.

M

Wine bottles stored in a rack on their side helps reduce the likelihood the corks will dry out and spoil the wine, experts say.

ost of us have seen in the pages of this magazine photos of opulent Smith Mountain Lake homes with magnificent kitchens. Many feature ornate wine racks positioned over the stove or in another area of the kitchen. While this type of storage makes for an impressive presentation for those fancy bottles of wine, it’s not in the best interests of their delicate contents. Wine is a living, complex, evolving organic compound that is sensitive to the elements where it is stored. Heat, light and vibration are all enemies of wine. When a wine rack is positioned above the stove — or near a home’s water heater or furnace — the wine is subjected to heat and temperature swings. “If the bottle is heated, the contents can expand and push the cork out,” said Ralph Brush, past president of the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Tasters Club and an amateur winemaker. “I keep all of my wine in the basement. I have a separate section for reds, which I age for at least a year, and the whites, which I age for at least 3-6 months.” The aging process allows particulate to settle out of homemade wines and eliminates “bottle shock,” a condition where the wine has not been in the bottle long enough for its elements to come together harmoniously, or when the wine has been jostled in transportation and needs to settle down. Corked bottles should be stored on their sides so that the inner surface of the cork remains in contact with the liquid in the bottle. “The shape of the cork will change,” Brush said. “The side touching the wine will expand. If the bottle stands up for two long, the cork can dry out and shrink, allowing air to contact the wine, which is not a good thing.”

Ralph Brush, past president of the SML Wine Taster’s Club, raises a glass of red wine he produced at his Smith Mountain Lake home. Brush suggests storing bottles in a cool spot, such as the basement, to avoid damage caused by heat.

When wine enthusiast John Garrett built his home in 1991 at The Water’s Edge, he was eager to include a properly designed and constructed wine cellar. He had the builder nestle the cellar into the earth and build two cement walls to help keep the wine cool. “The cellar keeps the wine at a constant temperature of 55-57 degrees, which is ideal,” he explained. “I wish I had built it bigger. I prefer red wine, but I keep a few bottles of white on hand for guests.” Garrett said the home’s windows were carefully situated so sunlight does not stream in on bottles of wine. Sunlight produces ultraviolet rays, which cause chemical reactions in wine, releasing unpleasant flavors. Fluorescent light contains ultraviolet as well. Garrett said he runs a humidifier during the winter months to rehydrate the arid air created by heat.

HUONg fRALIN

KEEP Your Cool If you don’t have the luxury of a cellar recessed into the earth that naturally maintains the ideal temperature for wine, commercial coolers are available to do it for you. They come in a variety of price ranges based on the amenities included. For those wanting to go top-of-the-line, Wine Enthusiast offers the EuroCave Performance 283 Double Elite Wine Cellar & Humidor (pictured left). Constructed from mahogany, it features a temperature-controlled wine storage area with glass door, humidor for cigars, shelf for liquors and top rack to hold wine glasses for $14,995. The company also offers touch-screen controlled countertop wine refrigerators starting at $129.95 for those on a tighter budget. Wine Cellar Innovations sells the Breezeaire, which will maintain your storage area at the proper temperature and humidity. The 600-cubic-foot unit is $95 dollars with larger models also available. For those interested in designing and building their own cellars, the company offers a variety of rack styles. Both businesses offer assistance via telephone and online chat, so don’t be intimidated if you aspire to create your own wine cellar. Wine Enthusiast (800) 356-8466 wineenthusiast.com

Brush pointed out that many quality wines are now sealed with screw caps instead of traditional corks, “and there’s nothing wrong with that.” Many wineries are turning to screw caps to avoid the mischievous malady known as cork taint. When corks are processed, a reaction can take place between mold and chlorine that produces an obnoxious chemical that permeates the cork with an aroma of moldy newspapers. Once the bottle is sealed with the cork, the contents are ruined. The problem occurs randomly and can even afflict expensive bottles. Another advantage to capped bottles is that they don’t have to be stored on their sides, but laying them down certainly will not harm them.

One last tip: Don’t store wine near your washer and dryer. Vibration could jar the contents and deteriorate the wine. Gordon Kendall has more than 25 years of experience in the wine business and is the wine, beer and spirits columnist for The Roanoke Times. He teaches wine classes and enjoys educating people on all things related to the industry. If you have a question for him or an idea for a future column, please email editor@smithmountainlaker.com.

A temperature-controlled wine room with racks that store bottles on their sides is the ideal way to ensure wine stays free of elements that could ruin it.

Voices from

Smith Mountain Lake

I

t was late 2012 when members of Lake Writers, the literary branch of Smith Mountain Arts Council, started kicking around the idea of producing their first anthology of work. Just 10 months later, “Voices of Smith Mountain Lake” was published with 35 local writers contributing poems, essays, short stories and drama manuscripts in a variety of topics related to SML. The group had modest sales goals, said Chuck Lumpkin, president of Lake Writers and SMAC, but the positive response from the SML community has come as a pleasant surprise.

“[It has been] nothing less than fantastic,” he said. “We were expecting sales of around 100 to 150. Three printings later, we have approached 500.” The book’s main purpose was to give any area author an opportunity to publish something with a lake theme. “Many people are not aware of SMAC’s involvement in the community. This was one event that anyone from the lake area could participate in, whether they were members of SMAC or not,” he said. “The idea was to break even, but any profits were to go to Smith Mountain Arts Council’s scholarship fund, and there were profits.”

READER REVIEWS

Me Before You By Jojo Moyes Louisa is a spunky girl living a very ordinary life. She still lives at home and has never left her small hometown. Will lived a rich, exciting and extreme life but, following an accident, is wheelchair bound and has all but given up. Throughout the book, their paths become entwined and they end up creating a bond so strong it changes their lives forever. This book is bittersweet, and you’ll find yourself thinking about it long after you’re finished. I look forward to reading another work by Jojo Moyes. — Jennifer Rakes, Moneta

America the Beautiful

By Ben Carson, M.D. “America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great” is not a quick read. It is, however, an important book, one I believe all Americans should read no matter what political party they support. Ben Carson grew up in poverty, but thanks in part to his mother’s dedication, earned degrees from Yale and the University of Michigan, and went on to become a successful neurosurgeon. In his book, Carson shares his thoughts on what Americans can do to make our country great again. — Sally Roseveare, Huddleston

The 200-page book was truly a collaborative effort by the 20-member club, Lumpkin said. Members Becky Mushko, Larry Helms and Sally Roseveare edited the submissions. Larry Sakayama provided a photo for the cover, which was formatted by Lumpkin and Tom Howell. “Voices from Smith Mountain Lake” is available in softcover for $10 at The General Store, Gifts Ahoy and Diamond Hill General Store. Yes, Chef: A Memoir By Marcus Samuelsson If, like me, you’re obsessed with the Food Network show “Chopped,” I highly recommend this autobiography. But even if you’ve never seen the show, Samuelsson, one of its regular judges, has an interesting story to tell. Born in Ethiopia and adopted by a middle-class Swedish family after his mother died of tuberculosis, Samuelsson developed passion at a young age for “chasing flavors,” as he calls it, by cooking with his Swedish grandmother. In “Yes, Chef,” Samuelsson chronicles his rise to prominence as a chef, restaurant owner and cookbook author, sharing tales of grueling hours, cut-throat co-workers, racial discrimination, family sacrifice and the social hierarchy of New York’s culinary elite. — Andie Gibson
