natural resources. Consequently, in keeping with scientific and technical studies, Environmental Law was encouraged in terms of developing a Doctrine and subsidies for this legislation. This can be seen in the fact that the Constitution of the Republic, issued in October 1988, had a specific chapter devoted to the Environment in article 225. Many national policies geared towards the various aspects and needs of the Environment in Brazil’s extensive national territory were derived from this article. We cannot omit this political, environmental and administrative panorama that illustrates and lays the foundations for Environmental Law and Environmental Advocacy. The Milaré Advogados Law Firm has been aligned with this process since December 1995. The founder of the firm, Édis Milaré, created the first Department for Public Prosecution for Environmental issues in the mid-1980s. The Department has become an efficient support center for the Ministry of Justice of the State of São Paulo in Brazil. He was also the Secretary of State for the Environment, and later President of the Fundação Florestal foundation. He then left to create the firm, which has been operating for 18 years. The firm began small and grew by opening new paths. It has formed and consolidated its staff of lawyers and paralegals assisted by technical advisors. There are no intentions for the current Firm to grow indefinitely, having adopting the style and dimensions of so-called boutique firms. It currently has 15 lawyers, eight paralegals and five technical advisors. The relationship with customers is open and cordial, as they are regarded as agents of sustainable development, advised to work within legal parameters and go beyond legal requirements to adopt attitudes of citizenship. This is how Milaré Advogados has participated in major infrastructure projects for national development in various parts of this country with continental dimensions. It is impossible to disconnect the firm’s work from careful drafting of legal environmental doctrine. The book Direito do Ambiente (Environmental Law), by Édis Milaré, has followed all of this growth in doctrine and practice, having become a reference on the subject. This has been the trajectory of the Milaré Advogados Law Firm. The awareness of the need to grow is not aimed at quantity, but rather at quality and constantly updating the firm’s work.
