ANNUAL REPORT 2013

For the past 25 years, that path has been a trail. Life-changing journeys Skyland Trail. start with a path.

Journeys that bring about profound life change are at the heart of all we do. In 2014, we will celebrate 25 years of change: changing lives, changing families, and changing futures. Looking back 25 years, I remember opening our doors in May 1989 with just four staff and four clients. Today, nearly 100 compassionate and dedicated professionals help hundreds of adults and their families reconnect with hope and achieve recovery each year. And Skyland Trail was awarded our seventh consecutive Joint Commission accreditation, earning a gold seal of approval from the nation’s top evaluator of healthcare organizations. Looking forward, we are embarking on an exciting period of strategic expansion to meet the changing needs of our clients and community, particularly young adults seeking specialized residential care and individuals with mental illness in need of outpatient primary care services. Your support will be an important part of this effort as we build for the future. During our first few years of operations, raising funds for a start-up mental health organization was a challenge. We are incredibly thankful that today, foundations and individuals better understand the tremendous impact they can have on changing lives and helping families by supporting Skyland Trail. Your continued investments in our treatment services, infrastructure and financial aid program lead directly to improved futures for hundreds of clients and their families and a healthier community for us all. We hope you will join us as we celebrate 25 years of change. You, our generous donors, have helped us thrive. Thank you. We look forward to continuing this journey toward a future full of hope and possibility.

2013 In Review In 2013, Skyland Trail served more clients than ever before, from all over the country and around the world. We launched exciting new treatment services, advanced our industry-leading outcomes research program, and hosted education events to engage mental health professionals and amplify the conversation about mental health in the community.

Treatment Services Expanded our Comprehensive Psychiatric Diagnostic and Assessment Service,

which was previously only available to our residential or day treatment clients, to a stand-alone outpatient service offered to individuals seeking a detailed and accurate diagnosis and a roadmap for effective treatment. Welcomed Wade Lee – a Skyland Trail graduate – to the treatment team

as a certified peer specialist, a new role that bridges clinical expertise with first-hand experience. Launched an Alumni Program to help Skyland Trail graduates stay connected,

build new relationships, and engage in healthy social activities. Received our seventh consecutive Joint Commission accreditation, earning a

2013 Treatment Outcomes Skyland Trail is a trailblazer in the area of outcomes research, which is an integral part of our evidence-based treatment model. We assess how our clients improve from admission to discharge, and now, how they sustain recovery up to two years after leaving Skyland Trail. We incorporate that data into our continuous quality improvement approach to build on what’s working and plan for the future. Here are a few highlights from our 2013 Treatment Outcomes.

Recovery Happens Here Most of our clients walk through the door disabled by their mental illness. In addition to affecting their mood or thinking, their illness impairs their ability to care for themselves, interact effectively with others and participate in the community. After completing our treatment program, the majority of our clients have significantly reduced symptoms and an improved quality of life. Although they will have to continue to manage their chronic illness and work toward achieving long-term goals, they have built a foundation for a life worth living. Prior to 2013, we assessed all clients using general scoring instruments of all clients of clients of all regardless of diagnosis experienced a statistically with a primary psychotic clients experienced a significant improvement disorder experienced statistically significant or assigned treatment in their attitude toward a statistically significant improvement in feelings program. In 2013, we 2 improvement in symptoms activities of daily living & of hopelessness added a second layer of psychosis1 overall functioning1 of instruments that are disease-specific. We knew our treatment program was effective overall. We can now demonstrate that of clients of all clients our specific treatment programs for bipolar illness, with substance misuse experienced a statistically major depression, schizophrenia and anxiety are experienced a statistically significant improvement effective. In fact, data from these well-tested and significant improvement in attitudes towards in impulsive or addictive medication adherence3 respected instruments confirm that we do a very good behaviors1 job helping people with all those illnesses recover.

“In the antidepressant trials that have served as the basis of FDA approval, the actual remission rate is 40 percent or less. Thus, if Skyland Trail is producing a remission rate of 60-80 percent, that is a rate that is at least 150 percent and maybe two times the rate of remission in the trials that have resulted in antidepressant approval.” – Ed Craighead, PhD, Emory University School of Medicine

“Long-term, sustained recovery looks great on graphs. It looks even better in person.” Sustained Recovery Another important milestone in 2013 involves – Chris Cline, MSW, LCSW, vice president for clinical services assessing how clients sustain recovery up to two years after graduating from Skyland Trail. When you look at positive life events after discharge – things like overall health, being employed or in school, having positive relationships, feeling socially connected, and having safe and stable housing – our graduates continue to experience an increase in the number of good things happening in their lives.

Healthy Minds and Bodies Some medications that reduce psychosis and stabilize moods can lead to the development of cardiometabolic syndrome, a constellation of symptoms including high body mass index and elevated cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and glucose levels. An important part of our integrated treatment model is helping our clients adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent the development of cardiometabolic syndrome and strengthen their bodies along with their minds. We collect data on body mass index (BMI) to help us measure our success in this area. In 2013, out of all of patients who were susceptible “These 2013 data provide an important platform to developing cardiometabolic syndrome, 48 percent for growth as we launch an exciting expansion had no change in their BMI and 32 percent had a of our services focused on encouraging lower BMI. So 80 percent of patients did not progress healthy lifestyles and preventing cardiometabolic in the development of cardiometabolic syndrome. syndrome.” – Ray Kotwicki, MD, MPH, chief medical officer

Community Support Skyland Trail could not do all that it does – nor have expanded services and facilities as we have over the past 25 years – without generous community support. We are grateful to our donors and volunteers for their contributions and, in the sharing of those gifts, for helping us to help so many.

Everyone gives for a reason. Whatever your reason... thank you.

Why I Give: Jackie Montag “While serving on the Financial Aid Committee, I witnessed the recovery journeys of so many individuals and their families. Each story was unique, but there were common themes. Many had been hospitalized a number of times. A majority emphasized their hopelessness and their belief that there was nowhere for them to go, that nothing would work to help them get better, until they found Skyland Trail. While what we award through financial aid scholarships may seem large, it’s such a small amount to restore a person’s self worth and help them become a contributing member of our society. It’s rewarding to contribute to Skyland Trail as a board member and donor. I can see how what I invest makes a difference in helping people and changing lives.” Read more about why Jackie gives on our blog: skylandtrail.org/blog.

Spotlight: Skyland Trail Associates The Skyland Trail Associates is an auxiliary group of women who support Skyland Trail through fundraising efforts and special events. Associates also donate their time, skills and interests through volunteer opportunities supporting client activities. In 2013, the Associates: Welcomed 58 new members Raised more than $55,000 to support the purchase of state-of-the-art video conferencing technology Hosted 250 guests at the 2013 Associates Spring Luncheon & Fashion Show (shown far right) Volunteered time and resources to create welcome bags for new clients (shown near right)

Financial aid makes a difference: “Obtaining aid greatly assisted in my recovery process because I was able to fully participate in the program by living in the residences, which I could not have taken part in without financial aid. Taking time away from college was a hard decision, but financial aid made it more comfortable and an easier adjustment for my family and loved ones. The financial burden of treatment and therapy can be another hard thing to bear, but with the support of Skyland Trail’s Financial Aid program, I was able to pay attention to the things that were most important.” – Kimberly B., Skyland Trail alumni

“When I talk to people about estate planning, I encourage them to view it as an opportunity to document what is important to them and to express their wishes. In my own plans, it was important for me to recognize Skyland Trail and a few other nonprofits I have supported with an equal percentage share along with my living relatives. I became involved with Skyland Trail through my mother, who struggled with severe mental illness. It’s a legacy I’m continuing on her behalf.” – John Zellars, Cypress Society Donor

Planned Giving: The Cypress Society Individuals and families who support Skyland Trail through a planned giving commitment become members of The Cypress Society. We extend sincere thanks to the individuals and families who have become members of the Cypress Society to ensure that Skyland Trail continues to meet the needs of future generations through state-of-the-art facilities and innovative, leading-edge treatment programs.

Remembering Charles West, 1911-2013

Skyland Trail exists today because of a remarkable man, our visionary founder, Charles B. West, who passed away July 26, 2013, at the age of 92. Mr. West left a brilliant legacy as a business and civic leader, philanthropist, family man, and friend. In the early 1980s, Mr. West learned of a friend’s struggle to find help for his adult daughter diagnosed with schizophrenia and recognized a critical need for mental health treatment in Atlanta. Mr. West recruited a team of innovators and investors to fill the gap by creating a new organization. Skyland Trail opened in 1989 with a model of treatment that was groundbreaking in Atlanta and still new to much of the country – one focused on recovery and hope. Mr. West’s commitment and service to Skyland Trail continued over more than two decades, contributing directly to the growth of our organization and to improved lives for thousands of our clients. We are grateful to his family, who continue to provide leadership and support. We will continue to recognize and celebrate the legacy of Mr. Charles B. West. Spotlight: Michael Tompkins, Chair, Finance Committee For the past decade, board member Michael Tompkins has patiently and consistently applied his strategic leadership skills – along with his philanthropy – to help us improve our efficiency and advance our mission. As finance committee chair, Michael’s guidance helped us avoid the lay-offs and reductions in services that many nonprofits experienced during the recession. And in 2011, Michael stepped up in a big way to fill the gap while we searched for a new COO. He recently served as chair of our buildings & grounds committee and led efforts to select property for a planned campus expansion. “Michael speaks with authority, but takes time to mentor and coach, enabling others to act and leveraging the talents and contributions of the entire team – both staff and board,” says Beth Finnerty. “Whether attending a fundraiser, participating in negotiations with financial institutions, or leading a strategic board discussion, he always is working – quietly, humbly and with great skill and foresight – to advance our mission to inspire adults living with mental illness to thrive.” Thank you, Michael.
