Make 2012 the year you take on an apprentice

WELCOME TO ACTIVEINSIGHT of up to £1,500 have been pledged to small to medium sized employers recruiting 16 to 24 year olds. SUKI KALIRAI Interim CEO With newspaper headlines reporting rising unemployment rates on a seemingly daily basis, it’s heartening to know that doom and gloom isn’t reaching every area of the job market. SkillsActive is delighted to report that over the past five years it has seen a 600 per cent increase in the number of sport and active leisure apprentices and a 90 per cent rise in the hair and beauty sector. You can read more about just a few of our successful apprentices on page 10. And with increased financial benefits newly launched by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) the number of apprentices looks set to rise. 40,000 apprenticeship grants

In addition, our Group Training Association enables employers running small to medium sized businesses to group together and access funded training that would otherwise be difficult to reach. This training is delivered through SkillsActive’s network of approved National Skills Academy training providers. (See www.skillsactive.com/ apprenticeship-funding for more). If none of that has you convinced of the great things apprenticeships can lead to then turn to page 8 to read our exclusive interview with BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Winner (2011) Lauren Taylor who is on the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme. WHAT’S ON Amateur Championship, golfer Lauren described the AASE scheme as offering her the best of both worlds – the ability to work on her sport while earning relevant qualifications. While vocational learning is at the heart of what we do here at SkillsActive, we are also passionate about life-enhancing learning. We work across various projects like the Mayor’s Sports Legacy Fund and the Nancy Ovens Bursary to enable people to achieve things they might not normally be able to. The stories resulting from these grants are truly inspiring (see page 12) and will, we hope, encourage more businesses to become involved in similar schemes. I hope you enjoy this edition of ActiveInsight and find the stories in it inspiring. We are proud to be involved in facilitating the careers of so many young people and hope you will be too.
