SPORTS MEDICINE The Saint Joseph’s Sports Medicine Department serves the stu‐ dent‐athlete population through the prevention, recognition, evalua‐ tion, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Dr. Lori Rafferty oversees the Saint Joseph’s Sports Medicine pro‐ gram with the help of head athletic trainer Bill Lukasiewicz and assis‐ tant athletic trainers Keri Lyn Heickert, Ryan Obsniuk, Salvatore Capone and Jessica Witzke. Taking advantage of SJU’s state‐of‐the‐art sports medicine facilities, Rafferty also serves as the liaison between SJU and its medical doctors. Rafferty is in her 19th year as SJU’s director of sports medicine after serving for two years as an assistant on the staff. The Bridgewater, N.J., native completed her Ph.D. in kinesiology from Temple University with a concentration in sports medicine in 2000. She owns a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education from East Stroudsburg University (1986) and a master’s degree in physical education from Trenton State College (1988). She resides in Chesapeake City, Md., with her husband, Keith, and their children, Grace and Keith. Lukasiewicz, who is in his 14th year at Saint Joseph’s, and fifth as head athletic trainer, works with the Hawks’ men’s basketball pro‐ gram. (complete bio on page 28) Heickert is in her third year as assistant athletic trainer, with her primary sport being women's basketball. Heickert, who served as an intern at Saint Joseph's in 2005, returned to Hawk Hill in 2009 after one year as an athletic trainer at Cabrini College. She also worked as a graduate assistant at Exeter High School in Reading, Pa., while pur‐ suing her master's degree in education from Alvernia University in 2009. A native of Norristown, Pa., Heickert earned a bachelor's degree in athletic training from Neumann College. She and her hus‐ band, Ryan, live in Brookhaven, Pa. Obsniuk is in his fourth year back on Hawk Hill after serving as an athletic training intern in the fall of 2007. He completed his under‐ graduate degree in 2007 from Central Michigan University and received a master's degree from SJU in health administration and education. He worked at Oakwood Sports Medicine in Dearborn, Mich., serving as an outreach athletic trainer to a local high school. A native of Canton, Mich., he resides in Philadelphia.

Capone joins the SJU staff this year after serving in the same role for the past 10 years at Neumann University. A graduate of West Chester University, he received a master’s of science degree from California University of Pennsylvania in 2009. A resident of Sicklerville, N.J., Capone has also worked for Novacare Rehabilitation and St. Mary Medical Center (N.J.). He resides in Sicklerville, N.J., with his wife Mary Anna with their two children. Witzke, now in her first year on staff, returns to Saint Joseph’s after having served as a student intern 2011. The 2011 graduate of Central Michigan University served as the head athletic trainer for the McLaren‐Bay Region in Michigan, providing coverage for all sports at Essexville Garber High School. She is pursuing her master’s of science degree at Saint Joseph’s and resides in Philadelphia. The Sports Medicine Department works closely with team physi‐ cians to provide the student‐athletes with the best medical care pos‐ sible. Among those physicians working with the Hawks are team orthopedist Michael Ciccotti (www.rothmaninstitute.com), Edward Gorrie, M.D. and nurse practitioner Laura Moore in SJU Student Health, and Eugene Hong, M.D., the family medicine‐sports specialist through Drexel University School of Medicine.
