2014 SEASON OUTLOOK The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team returns 16 letterwinners, including five starters and six offensive players that combined for 68 percent of last season’s scoring, in 2014. Despite the loss of six starters from the 2013 squad, the Hawks will look to continue on last season’s momentum of making the Atlantic 10 Championship postseason for the first time since 1994 and for just the third time in program history. Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Don D’Ambra, the Hawks return seven upperclassmen and a core group of sophomores and add 11 newcomers this fall. Senior tri-captains Tommy Brooks, Mike Glazer, and Jake Nelson will lead the Hawks into the 2014 campaign. "Our staff is excited about the upcoming season,” said D’Ambra. “We have a great mix of older and younger players who have the potential to have great seasons. The team has worked extremely hard this preseason and I hope their hard work pays off during the season." OFFENSE A two-time Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star selection, junior Tim Lazorko returns for his third season of patrolling SJU’s midfield in 2014. Lazorko owns 27 career points on nine goals and nine assists and is SJU’s returning leader in both categories, tallying four goals and four assists in 2013. "Timmy is one of our most talented players, and he has an extremely high Soccer IQ on the field,” said D’Ambra. “There are areas of his game that still need improvement, and he has the potential to become a top player in the Atlantic 10 Conference.”

Tim Lazorko

Bliss Harris

A pair of seniors in senior tri-captain forward Mike Glazer and redshirt senior midfielder Jake Mulinge will also be expected to bolster the Hawks’ offensive attack this season. Glazer tallied one goal and one assist in 16 starts last season and has proven that he can create his own offensive opportunities; the senior boasts 79 career shots and posted a .444 SOG percentage last season. Mulinge adds a phenomenal speed element on the wing and was a catalyst in five starts and 13 appearances off the bench last season. "Mike and Jake our two of the team’s hardest workers,” said D’Ambra. “They lead by example and set the standards high. They both have the potential to make impact plays on the field, and I hope their hard works pays off." Saint Joseph’s will look to mesh this veteran experience with a trio of sophomore midfielders that boasted phenomenal rookie campaigns last season in Bliss Harris, Sam Irvin, and Eric Jordan. Harris, a Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Rookie selection proved to be a versatile force in his freshman season; after opening his collegiate career by earning a spot as a starting defender, Harris then went on to take on the role of an attacking midfielder against George Mason at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Harris played the full 110 minutes of the match and took a team-best two shots in the contest. A fellow Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Rookie selection, Irvin was extremely consistent as a defensive midfielder in 13 appearances with seven starts and could also be utilized as a scoring threat this season. Jordan provided SJU’s spark of energy off the bench as he appeared in all 19 games, averaging 44 minutes per match, and returns as SJU’s third-leading returning scorer from last year’s squad. "Bliss, Sam and Eric are young but have the skill set to make difference-making plays,” said D’Ambra. “All three players have made tremendous strides in their development and have high ability, and I expect great things from them.”

2014 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 2

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Junior forward Emmanuel Temeh and sophomore forward Mori Diane also delivered notable speed and fervor off the bench for the Hawks last season and will join sophomore midfielder Mike Stuski in adding to Saint Joseph’s depth on the attack this fall. Two of the biggest impact incomers to the offensive end of the field will be Mark Colville, a junior transfer out of Manor College, and freshman Mike Akinkoye. “Mark will be a big scoring threat in the attacking third,” said D’Ambra. “He is able to score a lot of goals and we will be able to utilize him as an attacking midfielder. Mike has a lot of potential and is very athletic.” Saint Joseph’s additional newcomers, including sophomore Max Pozzessere and freshmen Matt Crawford, Liam Stenson, and Ben Zambetti, will round out the Hawks’ offense in 2014. DEFENSE Senior tri-captain Tommy Brooks will anchor Saint Joseph’s defensive unit this season. Brooks has started all 52 games of his career, and after making the change from a defensive midfielder to a sole defensive player for the 2012 season, he has led SJU’s back line. "Tommy is a natural leader, hard worker, and strong defender and will battle with the top players in the country,” said D’Ambra. “He has a heart of a lion and will be the on-field team leader as a senior this year.” Fellow senior tri-captain Jake Nelson and classmate Brandon Stevis will also lock down the veteran defensive unit. Nelson made the switch from an offensive-minded midfielder to a defender for A10 action last season and played full matches in the A-10 Quarterfinals in addition to wins over nationally ranked VCU, Fordham, and George Washington. "Jake is very talented and smart on the field,” said D’Ambra. “He is extremely calm under pressure and has very good field vision and passing ability. He will be a major attacking threat out of the back this year, and I am excited to see him play this year."

Jake Nelson

Tommy Brooks

Stevis adds additional veteran experience and understanding on the defensive end of the field and made 10 starts in 13 appearances in 2013. The graduation of Brendan Reilly vacates the center back position, and sophomore Coupar Lipp has been playing extremely well during preseason and is the front runner to win the starting central defender spot. Lipp made eight appearances on the back line last season and could break through to a starting position alongside the senior veterans. Sophomore Ted Foley impressed in the spring exhibition season while classmate Chris McCrea and freshmen Chris DiSabatino and Tom Santilli will compete for minutes of SJU’s back line in 2014. “Chris has the fight like Tommy Brooks,” said D’Ambra of the rookie DiSabatino. “He is a versatile and aggressive player.” GOALKEEPERS The graduation of three senior netminders, including starter Andrew D’Ottavi, from last year’s squad opens the goalkeeper position for the 2014 Hawks. Throughout preseason camp, sophomore Jay Higbee and freshman Bobby Edwards have been competing for the starting spot between the pipes. Higbee saw 45 minutes of action last season in the second half at Siena, where the then-rookie allowed just one goal and made three saves in his first collegiate appearance. “Jay is a great athlete, solid shot stopper and makes good decisions when to come out for balls,” said D’Ambra. “He had a strong spring season and looks good in camp." Edwards led St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.) to a pair of National Championships between 2011-12. “Bobby has great size and good communication skills with a lot of potential,” said D’Ambra. Fellow freshmen Trevor Nicol and Gregory O’Connell will also vie for minutes between the pipes for the Crimson and Gray.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 58 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008. 2014 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 8

upgrades and enhancements designed to expand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurf artificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights, and bleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue for Hawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition to peripheral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along with countless club, intramural and recreational activities. Legend has it that a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site. Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T. Finnesey. A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of a local auto manufacturer, he was a member of SJU’s Foundation Committee, which was established in 1922 to raise support for the College’s relocation to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927. The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was started in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Sweeney. The squad has compiled an overall mark of 168194-34 in 54 seasons at Hawk Hill, the most victories of any program on Sweeney Field. Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The pitch is the current home of the varsity men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams. The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon completion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantly increased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccer programs. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field was blessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 while a formal dedication was held on April 5, 2014. The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanent seats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall as well as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side of the field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, the facility will includes a new state of the art press box and enhanced sound system. Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-seat football stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s original grandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction of Villiger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Davidson College, The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013 and Davidson College in 2014. The additions follow a very successful first year by Virginia Commonwealth University, which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting institutions driven by academics and basketball. The league was deemed the “winner” of conference realignment in 201112. The three additions were guided by the five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 76.5 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's

cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 studentathlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 2,653 student-athletes in 2013-14. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides 10 postgraduate scholarships with $7,000 grants to selected studentathletes. In 2013-14, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition. The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earns high marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. This includes ranking fifth among all 32 Division I Conferences in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the past year’s announcements. Success on the playing field has mirrored the A-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earning NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and a record 13 men’s and women’s basketball bids. Men’s basketball in the Atlantic 10 saw a record six teams earn NCAA Tournament berths and for the seventh straight year an A-10 team advanced to the second weekend of play when Dayton made a run to the Elite Eight.

Legendary Jack Dunn, the first-ever coach of the Saint Joseph’s soccer team, has done more for the Hawk program than any one individual. The team’s head coach from 1958 through 1975, Dunn compiled a career record of 120-57-23 (.658) in his 18 years at the helm, leading SJU to the NCAA Tournament in 1966, 1971 and 1972. The 76-year-old Dunn played on the 1952 U.S. Olympic team and went on to a long playing career in the old German-American Professional League. Dunn, who also served as an assistant coach with the Hawks in the mid-90s, was one of 20 inaugural inductees to the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from

New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work

and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
