2014-15 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD MEDIA GUIDE 1

2014-15 SEASON OUTLOOK The Saint Joseph’s women’s track and field squad returns 29 letterwinners – including 12 career Atlantic 10 point scorers, 11 career ECAC participants, and five school recordholders – and welcomes 14 newcomers in 2014-15. Entering his 30th season with the women’s squad and 49th overall with the SJU track and field programs, head coach Kevin Quinn holds the highest of expectations of both his veterans and rookies alike as the Hawks begin this year’s journey toward success at the highest levels. Quinn has selected a strong and capable quintet to lead the Hawks this year, and Saint Joseph’s 2014-15 captains are senior hurdler and short sprinter Georgia Mason, senior jumper Kati Polaski, senior long-sprinter Marina Rufo, and junior middledistance runners Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka. “Each event group has a captain, and they have exhibited real leadership within the team, not just at practice, but in planning team activities,” said Quinn of his core five. “We went down to Ramblewood this October, and they ran the whole operation. I gave two talks, and they ran the rest of it. That’s the way it should be, and it was very profitable from that standpoint. I’m counting on them to keep me informed.” The seniors – Mason, Polaski, and Rufo – have demonstrated excellent work ethic and commitment to the track and field program over their careers while Hehir and Radzwilka, fresh off of the 2014 cross country season, did a phenomenal job in leading the young distance group this fall. To top it all, all five have raced at one of the highest levels – the Atlantic 10 Championships. SPRINTS Quinn will look to utilize both veteran experience and younger talent in the sprint events this season with junior Carly McGowan and sophomore Carly Montgomery. Entering her third set of indoor and outdoor seasons on Hawk Hill, McGowan is the expected definitive leader of the short sprints. McGowan competed in three different short sprint events at the A-10 level last season and owns sprint PRs in the indoor 60m (8.08), 200m (26.75), and 300m (44.38) and outdoor 100m (12.64) and 200m (26.11). “Carly [McGowan] is the top returner,” said Quinn. “She came back in very good shape after a really good summer. Just watching practice, there are certain things that you see, and she should have a very good season.” Quinn holds additional expectations for Montgomery, who transferred in after spending the fall semester of her freshman year at Salve Regina University. Montgomery posted outdoor PRs in the 100m (13.14) and 200m (27.34) and ran legs on three 4x100m relays that all placed in the top five of their respective meets. “Carly [Montgomery] has made the adjustment,” said Quinn. “She is now a full-fledged member of the team.”

Junior Carly McGowan (left) and sophomore Courtney Foster

LONG SPRINTS The talent and potential is limitless with this year’s group of long sprinters, and Quinn expects a specific quartet to make a difference. “In the long sprints, the four that deserve mention are Marina Rufo, who is a captain, and three sophomores – Courtney Foster, Ashley Gerald, and Katie Koss,” said Quinn. “Those sophomores are going to be very significant this year. They’ve gotten past the freshman business and, this is just from watching practices, they are far ahead of where they were at this point last year.” An accomplished long-sprinter for the Crimson and Gray, Rufo finished 22nd in the 500m (1:21.39) at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships last season and 23rd in the outdoor 400m on the conference level and owns a sub-minute outdoor 400m PR (59.93). Last season, short sprinter Mercedes Yanora led the rookie trio of Foster, Gerald, and Koss throughout the year. This year, Rufo will own that leadership role. Coming off of a spectacular rookie season in which she earned the title of the team’s “Best Freshman,” Foster owned SJU’s top times in nearly every sprint event last year en route to owning collegiate PRs in the indoor 200m (26.13), 300m (42.37), and 400m (58.11), and outdoor 100m (12.42), 200m (25.13), and 400m (57.12). Foster finished 13th in the 200m at the A-10 Outdoor Championships. Koss competed in eight different sprint events between the indoor and outdoor seasons

2014-15 SEASON OUTLOOK while Gerald took on five, and both placed in the top-20 twice on the A-10 Championships level. If these sophomores can improve upon what they accomplished as rookies, there is no ceiling to their potential success this year. Rufo will also look to lead the Hawks in the 400m-800m range. And, for the second preseason in a row, Quinn has once again been impressed by the offseason work of one of his strongest long-sprinters. “Jenna DeAngelo again put in a terrific summer and has come back way ahead of where she was last year,” said Quinn of the junior. There is quite the excitement surrounding the return of redshirt junior long sprinter Dannah Hayward, SJU’s only returning ECAC point scorer and three-time school recordholder. An injury plagued Hayward’s sophomore season, but if able to return to and maintain full strength and health throughout this set of indoor and outdoor seasons, the outcome can be phenomenal. In one of the most successful rookie campaigns in Saint Joseph’s women’s track and field program history, Hayward broke three school records and scored at both the A-10 and ECAC levels. Hayward owns the school record in the indoor 500m (1:13.96), which she set at the ECAC Championships en route to an eighth-place finish. Her school-record performance ranked her fifth overall and claimed the top freshman spot in the A-10 rankings; she also placed fifth in the event at A-10s. Also a star in the hurdles, Hayward spent the outdoor season refining the 400H. “Dannah is coming back from injuries and a sophomore year that really didn’t exist, and she is not where she was but is making real strides and is progressing,” said Quin. “I told her that her goal is not December and her goal is not January. Her goal is February. We probably wont see anything that you would expect from Dannah until later in the indoor season.” Sophomore Angelena Minniti raced the 500m and 800m last year and will round out the returning long sprinters.

DISTANCE Junior captains Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka will lead the young distance group. This particular event group took a hit with the graduation of a large core of experienced and talented seniors, but Hehir and Radzwilka did a phenomenal job in both leading the group and maintaining a strong work ethic and commitment to team goals on the cross country course this fall. “In the middle distance and distance group, the top ones there are Lauren and Sara,” said Quinn of his captains. “Lauren had a solid cross country season and should be ready to step forward and become one of the top kids in the conference in the mile and 3000m. Sara should be a very strong performer in the 800m, 1000m, and mile.” Quinn also expects juniors Emily Chaundy, Kathryn Cols, and Tess Doggett and sophomore Sydney Coughlin to remain the backbone of the team as the distance group continues to develop throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. These runners competed hard and at a high level during the cross country season, and Quinn expects these Hawks to continue that momentum. “They will be counted on to keep progressing off of the background of the cross country season,” said Quinn. Junior Melissa Donnelly and sophomores Alexandra Fiesel, Meghan O’Keefe, Jacqueline Pignataro, and Sarah Regnault will add depth to the distance events.

Senior Marina Rufo prepares for a relay event during the outdoor season.

2014-15 SEASON OUTLOOK RELAYS Although the relays did take a hit with the graduation of accomplished sprint and distance legs due to graduation, there are returners that are mentally and physically prepared to take the Hawks to the next level on the relay scene. The depth and talent in the long sprints will impact the relays in the best of ways, and SJU returns four long sprinters who own legs of a pair of school record-holding relays in senior captain Marina Rufo and redshirt junior Dannah Hayward (indoor 4x400m, 3:49.60) and sophomores Courtney Foster and Katie Koss (SMR, 4:04.54). Additionally, the outdoor 4x400m of returners Foster and sophomore Ashley Gerald ran the second-fastest 4x400m in SJU history (3:48.34) at the William and Mary Colonial Relays. “The best relay will be the 4x4,” revealed Quinn. “It will be really good. All of our relays should qualify for ECACs, but the 4x4 will be a factor in most of the meets we go to. One of the good things is that there are probably six or seven athletes in contention for that – Marina, Courtney, Ashley, Katie . . . One of the freshmen could be a person in contention for that and, there could be Georgia Mason. I’ve used her in relays and every time I have, she has run very well, because she’s an athlete and a competitor . . . But that’s going to be my biggest headache and joy this year, trying to keep seven people happy with four spots. We typically don’t have that as an issue.” But it’s a “good” issue to have. Especially when they have already proven that they can take down parts of the record books and do it on the big stage: the A-10 Championships. Foster, Gerald, and Koss combined for 21 points – seven apiece – by running on both 4x400m relays that scored at the indoor and outdoor conference meets. Additionally, Hayward and Rufo have scored in the 4x400m on the A-10 level. The other main relays will be in good hands. Junior distance sensation Lauren Hehir joined Foster on the indoor DMR that earned bronze at 2014 A-10s and also owns six career points in the 4x800m. Hayward and Hehir have also represented the Hawks at ECACs in the 4x400m and DMR, respectively.

HURDLES For the second consecutive year, Kayla Charles and Georgia Mason will lead SJU in the hurdles. The senior duo has already rewritten SJU’s recordbooks: Charles in the outdoor 100H (14.47) and indoor pentathlon (3,724 points) and Mason in the indoor 60H (8.82). In the first meet of last year’s indoor season, Mason broke through barriers to break her own school record in the 60H, clocking in an 8.82, to earn silver at the meet. That performance would go on to top all SJU 60H performances on the season and rank sixth in the Atlantic 10. Mason also won the event at the Princeton Tri-Meet and owned the squad’s top-five times, including the only three SJU sub-9.00 performances. Mason also went on to take home SJU’s top-five performances in the outdoor 100H last season, including a top-time and PR 14.67 at the 2014 A-10 Outdoor Championships. Coming off of an injury that hampered her sophomore season, Mason broke both of her indoor and outdoor hurdle times last year and, if healthy and having already scored in the 60H at the conference level, could return to that form. “We need Georgia to be healthy,” said Quinn of his senior hurdles captain. “She has looked terrific at practice, better than last year.” Charles’ experience ranges from the indoor 55H and 60H to the outdoor 100H and 400H. She set the school record in the 100H (14.47) in the preliminaries of the 2013 A-10 Outdoor Championships and took third in the 60H in back-to-back meets early in the indoor season at the Jack Pyrah Invitational and Princeton Tri-Meet. Charles will look to utilize her experience in the hurdles as the school recordholder and A-10 scorer in the indoor pentathlon will strive to make a return to the event. “Kayla has looked exceptional,” said Quinn. “And, she’s all on fire for the pentathlon. She is relentless.”

2014-15 SEASON OUTLOOK The anticipated return of redshirt junior Dannah Hayward to the hurdles will add an extreme amount of depth and talent to the group. After being extremely limited all of last year due to injury and earning a redshirt year, Hayward will look to continue the momentum of her phenomenal rookie campaign, where the she set three school records, including the outdoor 400H (1:00.11) at ECACs. During that outdoor season, Hayward led all freshman in the A-10 and ranked sixth overall in the 400H and went on to place 23rd at the USA Junior Championships. Hayward is a point scorer in the 400H on both the A-10 and ECAC levels. A pleasant surprise from last season came in the form of then-rookie and current sophomore Emely Ramirez. Ramirez made eight 60H appearances during the indoor season, including a PR performance of 9.46 at the Geigengack Invitational and a showing at the A-10 conference meet. Ramirez went on to compete in the outdoor 100H and improved upon her 100H time all three meets to post personal-record 15.56 for ninth at the Lehigh Games. 3,000M STEEPLECHASE The vacated spots in the 3000S due to the graduation of school record holder Maureen O’Donnell and two-time A-10 point scorer Erin James will warrant strong performances, and a pair of junior distance competitors in Lauren Hehir and Tess Doggett could step up for the Crimson and Gray. Hehir is the only returning Hawk who competed in the event last season, recording a PR (11:04.49) for 11th overall at the A-10 Outdoor Championships while Doggett also has experience in the event and posted a PR performance (11:40.43) at the 2013 A-10 Outdoor Championships.

Junior Tess Doggett

Senior Brianna Hunt

JUMPS SJU’s standout senior trio of triple jumper Gabriella Becattini, high jumper Brianna Hunt, and long jumper Kati Polaski has been a core component of the jumps section over the last three years and will now lead the Hawks’ jumps unit in 2014-15. Becattini returns for her final collegiate campaign in the triple jump after a standout junior season in which she took sixth to score at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, broke her indoor PR (11.75m) to win the event at the Giegengack Invitational, and demolished her outdoor PR (11.73m) at the 2014 Penn Relays. After a junior season that was quite limited due to injury, Hunt will look to return to her sophomore-year form, a form that saw her qualify for the 2013 ECAC Indoor Championships and place seventh at the 2013 A-10 Outdoor Championships. Hunt reached an indoor PR of 1.70m and an outdoor PR of 1.65m back in 2012-13 and, in just one opportunity to compete in the high jump last indoor season before sustaining that season-ending injury, posted a high jump mark of 1.55m – a mark that stood as tied for the team-best mark of the season. The key component to this duo’s success will depend greatly on their health throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. “Gabby and Brianna could be significant factors, but we need to get them healthy,” said Quinn of his senior triple jumper and high jumper. “They will not appear with significant results until well into January, maybe even February.” After breaking her outdoor PR in the long jump (5.40m) last season, Polaski will look to build off of a solid junior campaign heading into her final year. Polaski took 11th in the long jump at the 2014 A-10 Outdoor Championships and won the title at the Giegengack Invitational. Quinn believes that with Polaski, the best may be yet to come. “Bold prediction: she is going to have a very, very strong year,” said Quinn of his senior jumps captain.

2014-15 SEASON OUTLOOK

NEWCOMERS The Hawks welcome five distance runners, four sprinters, three hurdlers, and two jumpers as 14 new faces will compete for the Crimson and Gray this year. “The freshmen are good and are going to make a contribution,” said Quinn. The distance newcomers include Goucher College sophomore transfer and four-time 4x8 district champion June Chiango (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area), sophomore Julia Jenkins (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy), six-time state 3200m state qualifier Alicia Ezekiel-Pipkin (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddon Township), two-time All-District First Team selec-

tion Megan O’Dowd (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck), and threetime All-Monmouth County selection Cassidy Weimer (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South). All five Hawks raced with the cross country squad in the fall and could make a significant impact on the young distance group this year. The sprints will see the addition of four freshmen in AllState selection Nia Dupiche (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway), four-year Penn Relays 4x400m leg Alex Edger (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy), Avon Grove’s school recordholder in the indoor and outdoor 800m Caroline Keegan (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove), and Andrea Warren (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy). A trio of freshmen hurdlers in three-time All-Central Connecticut Conference selection Rose O’Brien (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic), two-time PIAA Outdoor Pennsylvania State Championship qualifier Steph Toland (Havertown, PA./Haverford), and Central Group III New Jersey State Champion Ariana Wilson (Tinton Falls, N.J.//Neptune) will also look to make an impact in their first collegiate seasons. The freshman duo of five-time Pennsylvania state medalist Claudine Andre (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) and AllOlympic Conference selection Aarynn Crawley (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) will round out an experienced jumps group.

Sophomore Julia Jenkins

Freshman Cassidy Weimer

Quinn also expects his pair of high-jumping sophomores Rachel Kline and Emely Ramirez - to put forth solid efforts in their second years. As rookies, both Kline and Ramirez represented SJU in the high jump 13 times apiece, tied for the teambest mark in the event for both the indoor (1.55m) and outdoor (1.55m) seasons, and competed at both the indoor and outdoor A-10 Championships. “Now sophomores, Rachel and Emely have become significant performers within the conference.” Sophomore long and triple jumper Kiersten Moylan and high jumper Katie Gross will also return to the jumps group.

His men's cross country squads won two Big 5 titles, while the 1984 men's track team turned in a seventh-place finish at the IC4A Championships. In 1993, the women's cross country team won the Atlantic 10 Championship, becoming the first women's sport at Saint Joseph's to accomplish the feat. Under Quinn's tutelage, the 1997 track team set 10 new school records and notched SJU's first-ever women's Penn Relays victory, earning first place in the 4x800m relay. In 2000, Quinn again coached the Hawks to the Atlantic 10 cross country title. Quinn was named the A-10 Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1993 and 2000. In 29 years with the Saint Joseph’s women’s track and field program and 30 seasons with the cross country programs, Quinn has coached five NCAA AllAmericans and 14 NCAA qualifiers, five ECAC champions, and 87 track champions and 31 All-Conference cross country selections on the A-10 level, including nine Performers of the Year and one Rookie of the Year. Additionally, Quinn coached Saint Joseph’s University’s only NCAA champion, Donna Crumety, to the 1991 title in the triple jump. 2014-15 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD MEDIA GUIDE 8

SWEENEY FIELD THE HAWK

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The pitch is the current home of the varsity men’s and women’s track and field, soccer and lacrosse teams. The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon completion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantly increased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccer programs. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field was blessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 while a formal dedication was held on April 5, 2014. The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanent seats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall as well as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side of the field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, the facility will includes a new state of the art press box and enhanced sound system. Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-seat football stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s original grandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction of Villiger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field has undergone a number of upgrades and enhancements designed to expand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurf artificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights, and bleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue for Hawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition to peripheral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along with countless club, intramural and recreational activities. Legend has it that a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site. Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T. Finnesey. A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of a local auto manufacturer, he was a member of SJU’s Foundation Committee, which was established in 1922 to raise support for the College’s relocation to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927.

THE HAWK

The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was started in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Sweeney. The squad has compiled an overall mark of 168-194-34 in 54 seasons at Hawk Hill, the most victories of any program on Sweeney Field. SJU opened its playing grounds with a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. Baseball called Sweeney home from 1947 to 1959. The field hockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 and now practices and hosts games on Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. The location has also been home to women’s soccer since 1996 and the field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Sweeney in 2007. The women’s lacrosse squad is 74-104 in 21 seasons on Hawk Hill while the men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 66-88 mark in 21 seasons on Sweeney Field. Overall, the site has seen 1,259 games entering the 2014-15 academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 570-633-56.

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 58 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Davidson College, The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013 and Davidson College in 2014. The additions follow a very successful first year by Virginia Commonwealth University, which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting institutions driven by academics and basketball. The league was deemed the “winner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. The three additions were guided by the five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 76.5 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basket-

ball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 2,653 student-athletes in 2013-14. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 StudentAthletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides 10 postgraduate scholarships with $7,000 grants to selected student-athletes. In 2013-14, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition. The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earns high marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. This includes ranking fifth among all 32 Division I Conferences in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the past year’s announcements. Success on the playing field has mirrored the A-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earning NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and a record 13 men’s and women’s basketball bids. Men’s basketball in the Atlantic 10 saw a record six teams earn NCAA Tournament berths and for the seventh straight year an A-10 team advanced to the second weekend of play when Dayton made a run to the Elite Eight.

The Mackal Fieldhouse at the University of Rhode Island will once again serve as host to the 2015 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships from February 21-22.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from

New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work

and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
