SEASON PREVIEW Returning to the Atlantic 10 Tournament last year for the first time in seven years, the Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team is looking to build off that success as it enters the 2013 season. Backed by a returning core of eight starters and 22 letterwinners overall, the Hawks are eyeing another postseason berth, but with a deeper run this year. Backed by its strong play upfront, Saint Joseph’s returns 82 percent of its scoring from last season, including A-10 Midfielder of the Year senior Mo Hawkins. The only Hawk in team history to be named an All-Conference honoree three times, and just the second two-time A-10 Midfielder of the Year in conference history, she enters her senior year third all-time in points (61), goals (25) and assists (11). She is coming off a junior campaign in which she led SJU with 19 points, eight goals, 56 shots and tied for the team lead in assists with three. Helping create plays in the midfield, senior Nicole King and junior Jill Root will lead the charge for SJU. King ranked second on the team in points last season with two goals and two assists, while Root started 18 games in her first year on Hawk Hill and added a pair of assists. In the front, seniors Shannon Farrell, Emily Irons and Morgan Duffy and sophomore Olivia McEachern should fill out the startung roles for SJU. Farrell, Irons and Duffy each set new career-highs for points a season ago, while McEachern was named to the A-10 AllRookie Team. Adding depth and competing for playing time at forward and midfield will be juniors Cailyn Alfieri, and Kersten Formento; sophomores Shannon Westhead, Erica Graziosi, Ashley Volm, and Morgan Michon; and freshmen Bianca Chairge, Meghan DiPippa, Emily Gingrich, Katelyn Hurlock, Ramsey McMenamin, Nicole Moonan, Paige Norris and Maddi Todd.

Junior defender McHale Perkins tallied a pair of goals in 2012 and was the lone Hawk to start all 20 games.

Senior midfielder Mo Hawkins enters the season third all-time in career points (61), goals (25) and assists (11).

Boasting on of the top defenses in conference in 2012, the Hawks will lean on returning letterwinners senior Morgan Circe, and juniors McHale Perkins and Carly D'Esposito to set the tone for the backfield. Posting seven shutouts and a 1.17 goals against average last season, the Hawks' defense was even better in A-10 games, holding opponents to 0.41 goals against as they went 4-2-3. Combining to start 57 of a possible 60 games, Circe, Perkins and D'Esposito also add an offensive presence to SJU as the trio combined for three goals and an assist last year. Bolstering the Hawks' defense will be juniors Katie Beattie, Kelsey Marchesano, sophomore Lindsay Horst and freshman Shannon Mulvey. The group will give Saint Joseph's several different options in the backfield and make up one of its more talented defenses in recent years. In net, senior Lauren Jancuska and sophomore Allison Ebling will compete for time in the Hawks' most competitive spot. Possessing experience and talent, Jancuska posted a 0.85 goals against average as a sophomore, combining for eight shutouts her first two seasons. Entering her second year, Ebling will have her first chance to crack the Hawks' lineup in 2013 as she bring agility and talent to the goalkeeper position. With movement in the Atlantic 10 during the offseason, the Hawks welcome George Mason to conference play, while biding adieu to Temple, Charlotte, Butler and Xavier. Despite the loss of teams in the conference, vying for postseason spots will still be competitive come October. But with an experienced team and talented players, the Hawks are set to challenge for the top seeds and capture the program's first Atlantic 10 title.

SWEENEY FIELD Sweeney Field has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph's University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 700 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. Previously named Finnesey Field, the pitch is the current home of the men's and women's soccer teams and the men's and women's lacrosse teams. The field has undergone many upgrades over the years, but the most recent was completed in the summer of 2008. The AstroTurf, that was laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, stateof-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Sweeney home until 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well was the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field's elevation was raised five feet to its current location. The Saint Joseph's men's soccer program was started in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Sweeney, while the women’s soccer team began play in 1996. Over 17 seasons, the Hawks have posted a 67-55-13 record.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. The field hockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 and now practices and hosts games on the new Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. Overall, the site has seen 1,193 games entering the 2013-14 academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 547-595-51.

The only coach in Saint Joseph’s program history to lead the Hawks to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, Jess Mannella returns for her 13th season at the helm of the women’s soccer squad. In 12 seasons, Mannella has turned around a team that posted a single A-10 win in the year before she arrived to a highly-competitive club that has since made four postseason appearances and had 17 student-athletes garner Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolades. Combining a roster of a veteran players with a mixure of youth and talent, Mannella guided the Hawks to their fourth A-10 Tournament appearance in 2012. Picked to finish 13th, Saint Joseph’s played tenaciously under Manella’s guidance, boasting a conference best 0.41 goals against average in A-10 play and earning the sixth seed in the postseason tournament. Individually, Mo Hawkins became just the second player in league history to be named A-10 Midfielder of the Year twice, while Christine Neal became the first SJU goalkeeper to be named to the A-10 All-Conference First Team. The 2011 Hawks boasted one of its most formidable scoring tandems and got key goals and solid defense to keep them in contention for a conference postseason berth heading into the final weekend of the season. The pair of Hawkins and Jen Pfeiffer finished among the A-10’s top 10 in scoring for the second straight year, while Hawkins’ play garnered her All-MidAtlantic First Team honors as well as A-10 Midfielder of the Year and All-Conference First Team recognition. Earning All-Conference Second Team honors, Pfeiffer set a new mark for career goals at Saint Joseph’s. Several Hawks posted career years in 2010, while the team fought hard despite several key injuries. Hawkins became the third player under Mannella’s gudiance to earn both A-10 All-Rookie Team and AllConference honors in the same season, while Maggie Lupinski was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention. Additionally, Pfeiffer helped lead a SJU offense that increased its production in goals-pergame, assists and points from the previous year. Hawkins and Pfeiffer also became the first pair of SJU teammates to finish amongst the conference’s top 10 in scoring. In 2009, Mannella pushed her team to the brink of a postseason berth as the Hawks remained in contention for the postseason heading into the regular season finale. While SJU finished two points shy of its goal, the Hawks finished with a program-best 1.07 goals-against-average, with Lauren Sawyer earning All-Conference honors and Neal garnering All-Rookie accolades. Boosted by the 17th-best ranked recruiting class by SoccerBuzz.com in 2008, Mannella guided the Hawks to the fifth most-improved record in the nation at 8-7-4. Additionally, Saint Joseph’s surpassed the previous record for consecutive victories, stringing together five straight in 2008. Individually, several Hawks posted career years, while Pfeiffer excelled under Mannella’s guidance. Pfeiffer became just the second SJU player - and second under Mannella - to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and All-Freshman Mid-Atlantic Team honors. Compiling one of the toughest schedules in the region in 2007, Mannella’s young club responded, going 3-4-1 at home and had a pair of freshmen leading the way on offense. Having graduated the Hawks’ top scorer and goalkeeper, Mannella’s coaching ability shined in 2006 as Saint Joseph’s fought into the final weekend for a playoff spot. HEAD COACH program’s fourth-straight postseason appearance, Mannella coached the Hawks to a single-season best 33 goals, while helping Ali Wean become the squad’s first ever A-10 Offensive Player of the Year. Wean also became the second Hawk under Mannella to earn A-10 First Team All-Conference honors, and the first SJU player to be named to SoccerBuzz.com’s Mid-Atlantic Third Team after scoring a single-season record 14 goals. In 2004, Mannella guided the Hawks to new heights as Saint Joseph’s earned the team’s first postseason victory. Highlighted by a 1-0 win over La Salle in the A-10 Championship Opening Round, the Hawks posted a 9-11-1 overall record and finished 6-4-1 in conference play. Bringing in several highly-touted recruits and transfers in 2003, Mannella led the Hawks to their first winning season in four years. Saint Joseph’s went 9-8-1 overall and set a program record for Atlantic 10 wins with a 7-4-0 record and qualified for its first A-10 Tournament. The seven-game improvement from 2002 to 2003 ranked among the best in the nation as Mannella guided three players to All-Conference or All-Rookie recognition, including 2003 A-10 Rookie of the Year Megan Schutt. Away from the sidelines, Mannella has also been instrumental in guiding the team’s previous trips to Brazil, Norway, Spain, California and Colorado. She has directed off-season camps to help raise money for the team, as well as local charities and been instrumental in establishing volunteer and community service projects for the team. Prior to coming to Saint Joseph’s in August of 2001, she spent one year as head coach at West Chester University, where the Golden Rams compiled a record of 10-9-1. In addition to her responsibilities of handling the soccer team, Mannella also coordinated all aspects of West Chester’s extensive summer camp. A four-year starter at Delaware, Mannella earned her undergraduate degree in education in 1997. One of the top playmakers in Blue Hens history, she currently ranks 10th all-time in program history in assists (13) and helped her team to a 48-25-3 record from 1993-96. She returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach in April of 1999 and also served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Temple for one season. A native of Swarthmore, Pa., Mannella presently serves as head coach of FC Delco Storm U-17 and assists with the FC Delco U-12 squad. She is also currently working towards a master’s degree in educational leadership at Saint Joseph’s. A former standout at Strath Haven High School, Mannella currently resides in Philadelphia with her husband, Dan.

ASSISTANT COACHES Fred King Assistant Coach Goldsmiths College ‘02 - 2nd Season

Returning for his second season at Saint Joseph's is assistant coach Fred King. King came to Hawk Hill after spending two seasons at Rutgers. Serving as director of soccer operations, he helped the Scarlet Knights post an 18-17-4 record over that period, including a #17 ranking in the NSCAA National Poll in 2010. Prior to joining Rutgers, King served as the state development coach for the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association from 2008 until 2010. Serving as head coach of the U-15 Olympic Development Program team, he led his teams to the Region 1 finals in 2008 and 2009 and semifinals in 2010. King began his collegiate coaching experience at Tufts University, serving as an assistant in 2004 and 2005. From there he would served as a volunteer assistant with Harvard's men's team for the 2007 season. While with the Crimson, King helped the team advance to its second-straight NCAA Tournament and finish with the third most goals in the nation. Working as a coach with the F.C. Greater Boston Bolts, king began his professional coaching career in 2005. Coaching the U-12, U-16 and U-18 boys squads, he helped the Bolts the regional championships in 2006 and 2007. A 2002 graduate of Goldsmiths College at the University of London, King was a four-year letterwinner and serverd as team captain of the First XI soccer team. Along with playing for the University of London Representative team, he also competed with the Dulwich Hamlet Football Club. Along with his duties with the Hawks, King is an instructor for both the Players Development Academy, New Jersey Youth Soccer Association and serves as head coach for the New Jersey U-12 ODP Girls team. He also, coaches the PDA (Players Development Academy) South U-9, U-12 and U-15 girls teams as well as on Region 1 ODP Staff. King holds a USSF 'A' License, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, USSF National Youth License and a KNVB National Diploma and is an instructor for New Jersey Youth Soccer Association. King and his wife, Kristin, currently reside in Allentown, N.J.

Lane Davis Assistant Coach Wichita State ‘99 - 1st Season

Beginning his first season at Saint Joseph's, Lane Davis joined was named an assistant coach this Summer. Davis comes to Hawk Hill after serving as an assistant at UMBC. In the fall of 2012, he helped goalkeeper Lauren Kadet earn America East All-Conference Second Team honors and defender Amira Walcott garner All-Rookie Team accolades. Prior to coaching the Retrievers, Davis spent three seasons at George Washington (2009-11). During his tenure as an assistant coach with the Colonials, he was responsible for working directly with the goalkeepers while also serving as recruiting coordinator. George Washington would have three players selected to Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams during Davis' three seasons, while the Colonials earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award recognition every year. Davis began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer ALL-TIME SJU ASSISTANT COACHES assistant at Kansas. Over his three seasons with the Jayhawks, he helped guide the team to a Sweet 16 appearance in 2003 Name (Season at SJU) Years NCAA Tournament. ROSTER Lindsey King Student Assistant Capping her fourth season with the Hawks, senior Lindsey King will serve as a student assistant in 2013. A three-year letterwinner, King is a member of the SJU Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Appearing in six games her first years, she came to Hawks Hill after a stellar career at Villa Joseph Marie. A four-year letterwinner and two-year starter, she earned Athletic Association of Catholic Academies All-First Team honors as a senior and helped her squad to two district titles and the 2007 PIAA Group AA State title. A member of the YMS Premier Comets, the Bensalem, Pa., is working on her degree in psychology.

2012 YEAR IN REVIEW Picked to finish 13th in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, Saint Joseph’s proved pundits wrong last season as the Hawks finished sixth in the conference standings and earned their first postseason bid since 2005. Backed by stellar defense and timely scoring, the Hawks opened the season with a 3-0-1 record as they set the tone early for their success. Senior goalkeeper Christine Neal posted two of her seven shutouts on the year in the opening two weeks, while classmate Ali Yozwiak and junior Mo Hawkins collected a pair of goals en route to wins over Binghamton, Villanova and Fairfield. Saint Joseph’s bounced back from three-straight losses with two wins in its final three nonconference games to give the team momentum heading into conference play. Having closely missed out on an A-10 Tournament bid the past few years, the Hawks displayed grit and determination in its opening game at Temple. Behind a goal by Hawkins and a shutout performance from Neal, SJU began conference play with a 1-0 win over cityrival Temple. Hitting the road for games at Duquesne and St. Bonaventure, the Hawks’ defense stepped up. In the opening game, Saint Joseph’s and the Dukes played to a scorless double overtime draw, while a late goal by the Bonnies proved to be the difference in the second contest. Posting four points in the first two weeks of A-10 play, the Hawks were among the leaders vying for position in the standings heading into home matches against Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Tallying the first two goals against the Minutewomen, SJU’s defense limited the opposition to just one shot on goal it picked up three points in the win. The Hawks followed with a strong game against the Rams as Hawkins scored early and McHale Perkins added a late goal, while Neal and the backfield pitched their third shutout in conference play.

Christine Neal became the first goalkeeper in SJU history to be named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team after going 9-7-4 with a 1.17 GAA.

The Hawks took to the road for crucial games at Saint Louis and Butler. Opening at the Billikens on Friday, Saint Joseph’s got a goal from Hawkins and kept the game tight as the teams played to a 1-1 double overtime draw. Looking to keep pace with the conference leaders, it was Neal and the Hawks’ defense that stepped up at Butler. Despite being outshot 32-4, Saint Joseph’s earned an important point in its 0-0 tie with Butler. Returning home for the final weekend of the regular season, the Hawks controlled their own destiny. Saint Joseph’s hosted A-10 leading La Salle to start the weekend and after a scoreless regulation, the Hawks headed to their third-straight extra frame. Saint Joseph’s had a chance to win as a ball clanked off the top right crossbar, but it would be the Explorers who scored in the second overtime to keep the Hawks from clinching a postseason spot. Needing a victory over Fordham to extend its season, SJU would get an early second half goal from Hawkins and relied on the steady play of Neal and the backline to earn a 1-0 win and the sixth seed in the A-10 Championship. Making the conference postseason for the fourth time under head coach Jess Mannella, the Hawks faced third-seeded VCU in the quarterfinals. Despite a valiant effort from the Saint Joseph's, the season would come to an end with a loss to the Rams. With the success of 2012 still prominent, Saint Joseph’s forged their name amongst the top-tier teams in the A-10. Returning the core of the roster, Mannella and the Hawks are poised for a return trip to the A-10 Championship in 2013.

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.

• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.

• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.

• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.

• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.

• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 57-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2013 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 36

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addi-

tion, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent

record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
