2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW Coming off arguably the best season in program history, Saint Joseph’s enters the 2013-14 season prepared to build off its success and prove it is one of the better teams in the Atlantic 10. Picked to finish eighth, the Hawks want to prove prognosticators wrong and finish among the top schools in the conference. “We want to live up to our preseason ranking and exceed that,” said head coach Ian Crookenden. “Other people’s expectation of our program doesn’t live up to ours, so we use that incentive. Being picked eighth in the preseason is an increase, but we believe we are better than that.” Returning its top six singles players, and nine letterwinners in total, Saint Joseph’s will rely on its upperclassmen to set the tone for the season. Backed by A-10 All-Conference performers redshirt senior Casey Robinson and junior Aurora Davis, the Hawks recorded 13 victories a season ago as the pair set the single-season record for singles wins with 25 apiece. A three-time All-Conference honoree, Robinson holds the career record for singles wins (66) and wins at No. 1 singles (52). After two productive seasons moving up the singles flights, Davis has provided stability at the second flight and will challenge for the top position this season. Currently fifth all-time in career singles victories (39), she set the single-season record for wins at No. 2 singles last year (18) and is tied for first in all-time wins at No. 2 singles (23). Senior Devi Jadeja, juniors Kelly Mulquin and Lauren Roy and sophomore Kristina Eisenbrand gave the Hawks a boost in the third through sixth singles flights and look to do so again this year.

Tied for sixth all-time in career singles wins (37), Jadeja enters her final season fourth all-time in career victories at No. 2 singles flight (15) and tied for fifth in all-time wins at No. 4 singles (11). Having her best season to date last year, Mulquin posted the fourth most singles wins in a single season (17) and set the single-season record for wins at No. 5 singles (14). Ranking four on the team in singles wins, Roy finished with a 1410 record overall and 10-7 mark at No. 6 singles, while Eisenbrand posted a strong rookie campaign winning the Second Singles Flight title at the SJU Invitational, winning a team-best seven matches at No. 3 singles and finishing with 13 singles wins overall. Adding depth to the lineup and challenging for starting spots are senior Michele Vona, sophomores Anne Marie Devlin and Arianne Polatnick and newcomers Sarah Contrata, Mary-Margaret Ewens, Claire Minnoe and Alex Zachem. “We are at the point in the program where we have it sorted out that we are losing and bringing in two good players every year,” said Crookenden. “We lose our seniors, but the juniors can fill in the top half and we have some excellent talent in our underclassmen.” Playing another competitive schedule, the Hawks will face some of the top competition in the area this year as they look to contend for an A-10 title in April. In the fall, SJU faces some of the best players in the region as the Hawks compete at the Towson Tiger Classic, the annual Saint Joseph’s Invitational and the ITA Atlantic Regionals. Saint Joseph’s begins match play in January with eight matches slated against A-10 opponents. Competing in 21 matches over a three-month period, the Hawks want to improve upon their early season selection come the conference tournament in late April. “The schedule works out well as we face tough teams that will challenge us early,” Crookenden said. “We will have an interesting weekend when we play Massachusetts, Fordham and Rhode Island. Two of those teams were picked ahead of us, but we feel at that stage we will be hitting our stride and can really challenge them. And hopefully move up a little in the seedings before the tournament.” Blending veteran experience, talented newcomers and a challenging schedule, Saint Joseph’s is again set to challenge for the Atlantic 10 crown this season.

SJU TENNIS COMPLEX Opened in the Fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home. The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's current 65-acre footprint. Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s construction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team compiled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-2009. Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the nearby Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

2013-14 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 14

2012-13 YEAR IN REVIEW Posting one of the more memorable seasons in Hawk Hill history, Saint Joseph’s set the single-season record for wins, while Casey Robinson and Aurora Davis became the first teammates to garner Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors in the same year. As a team, Saint Joseph’s posted a 13-11 overall record last year after a cold start to the season. Going 1-8 to begin dual matches, the Hawks rebounded, winning eight straight and 12 of their last 15 matches of the year. Among the victories, the Hawks won eightstraight matches, including their matches in Florida against South Dakota, Providence, South Dakota State and Presbyterian. Following a tightly-fought loss to Temple, Saint Joseph’s dropped just one point in its final three matches as the Hawks swept Saint Francis (N.Y.) and Rhode Island and capped the regular season with a 6-1 win over Villanova. Seeded 11th at the Atlantic 10 Championships, Saint Joseph’s pushed sixth seed George Washington to the limit. Down 3-1, the Hawks rallied in singles play to knot the match at 3-3. Unfortunately for SJU, the Colonials would take the final singles point and the match. On the individual side, her season marked the first time Saint Joseph's has had multiple players earn A-10 All-Conference honors as Robinson was named to the First Team and Davis earned Second Team accolades.

Aurora Davis earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honors after going 25-6 in singles.

Posting arguably the best season in individual history, Robinson went 25-4 in singles matches, including a 20-3 mark at the top singles flight. Setting the record for wins at No. 1 singles in a season and tying the mark for overall singles wins in a year, the four-year letterwinner also set the Hawks' all-time records for singles wins (66) and wins at No. 1 singles (52). Already the only player in Saint Joseph’s history to garner multiple All-Conference honors, Robinson added another prestigious accolade as she was named the SJU Class of 1950 Award winner. Having her best season in Crimson and Grey, Davis tied Robinson’s mark for wins in a season, going 25-6 overall. Additionally, she set a new record for wins at No. 2 singles, tallying 18 wins for Saint Joseph’s Additionally, several other Hawks posted notable seasons as Kelly Mulquin posted the fourth-most wins in a season, going 17-9 in singles play. Additionally, she teamed with Devi Jadeja to take second place in the second doubles flight at the SJU Invitational. Also at the tournament, Kristina Eisenbrand won the second singles flight at the SJU Invitational, while Lauren Roy was runner-up in the third flight consolation bracket and Michele Vona was runner-up in the fourth flight consolation bracket.

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2013-14 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 26

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,500 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addi-

tion, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent

record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
