2012 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 1

SEASON PREVIEW For the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team there is one goal for the 2012 season, make the Atlantic 10 Championship. With the field extended to eight teams this year with the addition of Butler and VCU, the Hawks are poised to return to the conference playoffs after barely missing the past few seasons. "Everything we have been working on since the end of last season has been how can we get back to the Atlantic 10 Championship," said head coach Jess Reynolds. "We have a good core group of returning veterans and the incoming class gives us the most depth that we have had." Amongst the returning starters, reigning A-10 Midfielder of the Year, junior Mo Hawkins, comes off a season in which she led the Hawks in points and tied for the team lead in goals. In just two years, Hawkins has proven to be one of the top offensive players in team history, entering the year fifth all-time in points (42) and poised to add to her impressive resume. With Hawkins play shifting between midfield and forward at times, Reynolds believes a trio of upperclassmen will help fill starting spots. Senior Ali Yozwiak and juniors Megan Duffy and Shannon Farrell proved a knack for scoring and should contribute greatly to the Hawks' attack. Adding to that, sophomores Cailyn Alfieri, Alicia de la Rosa and Kersten Formento and freshmen Shannon Westhead, Erica Graziosi Ashley Volm, Olivia McEachern and Morgan Michon will challenge for playing time. Senior goalkeeper Christine Neal enters the season tied for third alltime in career shutouts with eight.

Reigning Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year Mo Hawkins begins the season fifth all-time in career points with 42.

Gaining valuable experience, junior co-captain Emily Irons is coming off a career-best 17 games played, and teamed with sophomore transfer Jill Root should solidify the Hawks' midfield. An NEC AllRookie Team honoree, Root comes to Hawk Hill after starting 11 games at Mount St. Mary's and tallying two goals and four assists. The pair, with Hawkins, junior Devin Griffin and rookie Joy Santarelli should provide Saint Joseph's flexibility to adjust their offense and maintain its relentless pursuit. Possessing the most veteran of position, the Hawks' backline returns several key players, led by graduate student and co-captain Kayleigh Summers. Appearing in all 18 games, Summers helped the Hawks to a combined seven shutouts last season. The only rookie to start every game in 2011, sophomore McHale Perkins joins senior Taylor Mallory, juniors Nicole King, Morgan Circe, Lindsey King, sophomore Carly D'Esposito, Katie Beattie, Kelsey Marchesano and freshman Lindsay Horst in giving SJU its most talented defense grouping in years. In net, senior Christine Neal and Lauren Jancuska will battle for the starting time. The duo shared time in goal in 2011 and a 0.94 goals against average. Freshman Allison Ebling will compete for time in the Hawks' most competitive spot. With the goal of making the postseason set for this year's Hawks, Reynolds believes the work ethic and desire to win makes this year's club on the verge of accomplishing that goal. "Our team is very focused and they are going to play a relentless style. We're going to fight for every loose ball and give ourselves the opportunity to succeed," said Reynolds.

FINNESEY FIELD Finnesey Field has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph's University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 1,000 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. Finnesey Field is the current home of the men's and women's soccer teams and the men's and women's lacrosse teams. The field has undergone many upgrades over the years, but the most recent was completed in the summer of 2008. The AstroTurf, that was laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, stateof-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey home until 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well was the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field's elevation was raised five feet to its current location. The Saint Joseph's men's soccer program was started in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Finnesey, while the women’s soccer team began play in 1996. Over 16 seasons, the Hawks have posted a 62-51-12 record.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. The field hockey team played on Finnesey Field until 2007 and now practices and hosts games on the new Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. Overall, the site has seen 1,168 games entering the 2012-13 academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 530-588-50.

The only coach in Saint Joseph’s program history to lead the Hawks to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, Jess Reynolds returns for her 12th season at the helm of the women’s soccer squad. In 11 seasons, Reynolds has turned around a team that posted a single A-10 win in the year before she arrived to a highly-competitive club that has since made three postseason appearances and had 15 student-athletes garner Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolades. The 2011 Hawks boasted one of its most formidable scoring tandems and got key goals and solid defense to keep them in contention for a conference postseason berth heading into the final weekend of the season. The pair of Mo Hawkins and Jen Pfeiffer finished among the A-10’s top 10 in scoring for the second straight year, while Hawkins’ play garnered her All-Mid-Atlantic First Team honors as well as A-10 Midfielder of the Year and All-Conference First Team recognition. Earning All-Conference Second Team honors, Pfeiffer set a new mark for career goals at Saint Joseph’s. Several Hawks posted career years in 2010, while the team fought hard despite several key injuries. Hawkins became the third player under Reynolds’ gudiance to earn both A-10 All-Rookie Team and AllConference honors in the same season, while Maggie Lupinski was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention. Additionally, Pfeiffer helped lead a SJU offense that increased its production in goals-pergame, assists and points from the previous year. Hawkins and Pfeiffer also became the first pair of SJU teammates to finish amongst the conference’s top 10 in scoring. In 2009, Reynolds pushed her team to the brink of a postseason berth as the Hawks remained in contention for the postseason heading into the regular season finale. While SJU finished two points shy of its goal, the Hawks finished with a program-best 1.07 goals-against-average, with Lauren Sawyer earning All-Conference honors and Christine Neal garnering All-Rookie accolades. Boosted by the 17th-best ranked recruiting class by SoccerBuzz.com in 2008, Reynolds guided the Hawks to the fifth most-improved record in the nation at 8-7-4. Additionally, Saint Joseph’s surpassed the previous record for consecutive victories, stringing together five straight in 2008. Individually, several Hawks posted career years, while Pfeiffer excelled under Reynolds’ guidance. Pfeiffer became just the second SJU player - and second under Reynolds - to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and All-Freshman Mid-Atlantic Team honors. Compiling one of the toughest schedules in the region in 2007, Reynolds’ young club responded, going 3-4-1 at home and had a pair of freshmen leading the way on offense. Having graduated the Hawks’ top scorer and goalkeeper, Reynolds’ coaching ability shined in 2006 as Saint Joseph’s fought into the final weekend for a playoff spot. Despite falling shy of the program’s fourth-straight postseason appearance, Reynolds coached the Hawks to a single-season best 33 goals, while helping Ali Wean become the squad’s first ever A-10 Offensive Player of the Year. Wean also became the second Hawk under Reynolds to earn A-10 First Team AllConference honors, and the first SJU player to be named to SoccerBuzz.com’s Mid-Atlantic Third Team after scoring a single-season record 14 goals. 2012 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 4

HEAD COACH In 2004, Reynolds guided the Hawks to new heights as Saint Joseph’s earned the team’s first postseason victory. Highlighted by a 1-0 win over La Salle in the A-10 Championship Opening Round, the Hawks posted a 9-11-1 overall record and finished 6-41 in conference play. Bringing in several highly-touted recruits and transfers in 2003, Reynolds led the Hawks to their first winning season in four years. Saint Joseph’s went 9-8-1 overall and set a program record for Atlantic 10 wins with a 7-4-0 record and qualified for its first A-10 Tournament. The seven-game improvement from 2002 to 2003 ranked among the best in the nation as Reynolds guided three players to All-Conference or All-Rookie recognition, including 2003 A-10 Rookie of the Year Megan Schutt. Away from the sidelines, Reynolds has also been instrumental in guiding the team’s previous trips to Brazil, Norway, Spain, California and Colorado. She has directed off-season camps to help raise money for the team, as well as local charities and been instrumental in establishing volunteer and community service projects for the team. Prior to coming to Saint Joseph’s in August of 2001, she spent one year as head coach at West Chester University, where the Golden Rams compiled a record of 10-9-1. In addition to her responsibilities of handling the soccer team, Reynolds also coordinated all aspects of West Chester’s extensive summer camp. A four-year starter at Delaware, Reynolds earned her undergraduate degree in education in 1997. One of the top playmakers in Blue Hens history, she currently ranks 10th all-time in program history in assists (13) and helped her team to a 48-25-3 record from 1993-96. She returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach in April of 1999 and also served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Temple for one season. A native of Swarthmore, Pa., Reynolds presently serves as head coach of FC Delco Storm U-17 and assists with the FC Delco U-12 squad. She is also currently working towards a master’s degree in educational leadership at Saint Joseph’s. A former standout at Strath Haven High School, Reynolds currently resides in Philadelphia with her husband, Dan.

2012 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 23

2011 YEAR IN REVIEW The Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team boasted one of its most formidable scoring tandems in recent history in 2011, while its defense and goalkeeping kept the Hawks in contention for an Atlantic 10 postseason berth heading into the final weekend of the season. After a slow start to the season that included losses at Villanova and Binghamton, Saint Joseph’s bounced back with a 1-1 tie at Delaware. Mo Hawkins tallied the Hawks’ goal in the draw and helped SJU gain momentum. Backed by a 1-0 shutout win at Mount St. Mary’s, Saint Joseph’s would go on to win five of its next seven games as both the offense and defense stood tall. Jen Pfeiffer began her quest to break the Hawks’ all-time goal record with her first of the season at Mount St. Mary’s, while Christine Neal posted the first of seven shutouts for SJU on the year. The Hawks would post a 1-1 tie against Drexel and dropped a hard-fought 2-0 contest at Penn, but rebounded with four straight wins that saw SJU allow just one goal over that stretch. Pfeiffer and Hawkins controlled the pace of the game in a 2-1 win at UMBC. Saint Joseph’s posted its most dominant performance of the season to date the following game with a 4-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson, in which four different Hawks scored. Pfeiffer and Morgan Circe combined for all three SJU goals, while Neal and Lauren Jancuska split time in net for their second straight shutout. A two-goal performance from Hawkins and another shared shutout at NJIT lifted the Hawks’ record to 5-3-2 heading into Atlantic 10 play. Saint Joseph’s defense continued to play well to open conference competition, but the offense stalled as losses to La Salle and Richmond and double overtime draws to Fordham and George Washington gave the Hawks just two points after the opening two weeks.

With nine goals in 2011, Jen Pfeiffer set Saint Joseph’s record for goals in a career with 33.

Hawkins and Pfeiffer led an offensive outpouring against Temple as SJU topped its city rival, 7-1. The pair combined for five goals, while Maggie Lupinski and Kersten Formento tallied a goal each. A critical road stretch at Dayton and Xavier hindered the Hawks’ postseason hopes as they picked up one point and needed wins against St. Bonaventure and Duquesne in the final weekend to gain a postseason bid. Nicole King put SJU up early against the Bonnies, but the Hawks couldn’t hold the lead as their postseason hopes came to an end with a 2-1 loss. Playing their final game at SJU, the Hawks' six seniors made a major impact as they led SJU to a 4-0 victory over Duquesne. Pfeiffer became the program’s all-time leading scorer with a pair of first half goals, while Hawkins and senior Sandra Mackey tallied the final two goals and Neal made a pair of saves for the shutout in the season finale. Additionally, Hawkins’ play garnered her All-Mid-Atlantic First Team honors as well as A-10 Midfielder of the Year and AllConference First Team recognition, while Pfeiffer was named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team.

Vice President for Athletics Athletic Director

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.

• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.

• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.

• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.

• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.

• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2012 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 35

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addi-

tion, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent

record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
