2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 1

2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW Returning the core of last year’s starters and adding a trio of newcomers that will contribute immediately, the Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team is set to accomplish big things in 2012-13. Led by fifthyear head coach Ian Crookenden, the Hawks bring back five starters, and eight veterans in all, as they look to prove they belong amongst the top teams in the expanded 16-team Atlantic 10. Arguably the top player in SJU history through her first three seasons, redshirt junior Casey Robinson enters the season within reach of the program record for career singles wins. The only Hawk to earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors twice, she enters this season fourth all-time in career singles wins (41). An All-Conference First Team selection last year, Robinson is coming off a career year in 2011-12 as she set the SJU single-season mark for singles wins, finishing the season with a 23-6 mark and an 8-14 record in doubles play. Sharing time between the second and third singles flights, junior Devi Jadeja and sophomore Aurora Davis add success and experience to the top of the Hawks’ lineup. Combining for 23 singles wins overall, Jadeja has posted 24 singles wins over her first two seasons at SJU, while Davis finished second on the team last year with 14 singles victories. Additionally, the two finished tied for the team-lead in doubles victories with nine each.

Competing in 28 matches as a rookie, Kelly Mulquin established herself as a versatile player. Finishing with a 12-16 singles record as a freshman, she moved throughout the Hawks lineup playing from the third flight to the sixth flight. Playing primarily at the fourth and fifth flights a season ago, sophomore Lauren Roy helped solidify the Hawks’ roster. A native of Tours, France, she finished fifth on the team in singles matches played (26) and fourth in doubles matches (20). Seeing her most playing time at No. 5 singles, Roy tied for the team-lead with three wins in the flight. Adding depth to the lineup, seniors Nicole Esposito and Jenna Procyk and junior Michele Vona will compete for starting time this season along with freshmen Anne Marie Devlin, Kristina Eisenbrand and Arianne Polatnick. Serving as a captain this year, Esposito went 3-4 in singles matches last year, while Procyk and Vona each split time between No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. A four-year letterwinner at Wissahickon High School, Devlin qualified for PIAA State championships in both singles and doubles each season. In her lone season at Thousand Oaks High School, Eisenbrand was named Marmonte League's Most Valuable Player and First Team All-Marmonte after posting a 36-0 record. Winning both state and district medalists honors, Polatnick capped her high school career at Lower Moreland with a 62-4 mark at No. 1 singles her final two seasons. Looking to gain experience against strong teams, the Hawks will play some of the top competition in the area this year as they look to contend for an Atlantic 10 title in April. In the fall, SJU faces some of the best players in the region as the Hawks compete at the Towson Tiger Classic, the annual Saint Joseph’s Invitational and the ITA Atlantic Regionals. Starting in January, Saint Joseph’s will play 20 matches over a three-month period, including nine versus conference opponents, as the Hawks prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championship. With the combination of veteran leadership, skilled youth and a challenging schedule, Saint Joseph’s is primed for big things this season.

SJU TENNIS COMPLEX Opened in the Fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home. The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's current 65-acre footprint. Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s construction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team compiled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-2009. Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the nearby Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 12

2011-12 YEAR IN REVIEW Competing with its most talented squad in recent years, the 2011-12 Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team posted its most wins in five years and had several standout individual performances throughout the season. Coming off an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team selection the previous season, junior Casey Robinson turned in arguably the best single season in Hawk history. Setting a new Saint Joseph’s record for singles victories in a year (23), Robinson became the first player in program history to earn consecutive Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors, earning First Team distinction this year. Playing at the top singles flight, Robinson posted a 23-6 record and in the process set a new single-season mark for wins on Hawk Hill. Among the victories, she went 8-3 against A-10 foes and 17-5 at No. 1 singles. Robinson's 17 wins at first singles set a new single-season record for the flight, while her .793 winning percentage is the second best for a single year. Amassing a 4117 record through her first three years, Robinson will enter next season fourth all-time in career wins (41) and second all-time in wins at No. 1 singles (32). Earning the start at the second flight for most of the season, sophomore Devi Jadeja finished fourth on the squad in singles wins (nine) and tied freshman Aurora Davis for the most wins in doubles matches (nine). Davis and fellow rookies Kelly Mulquin and Lauren Roy made immediate impacts for Saint Joseph’s, combining for 32 singles wins. Playing between the top three flights, Davis had an extremely productive season, finishing second on the team in overall singles wins (14) and leading SJU in wins at the second flight (five) and third flight (six). Additionally, Davis teamed with Robinson for five wins at No. 1 doubles and finished the year with eight of her doubles victories at the top flight. Proving to be a versatile player who could play anywhere from third to the sixth flight, Mulquin posted 12 singles wins in her rookie campaign with the Hawks, ranking third on the team. Like Mulquin, Roy also gave SJU depth and flexibility to its roster as the French-born newcomer tallied six singles wins between the third and fifth flights.

Dorie Leahy Award winner Kate Dowd capped her SJU career with the third-most career victories at No. 6 singles with 10 wins.

Additionally, the Hawks’ three seniors - Laura Matz, Tara Walsh and Kate Dowd - helped usher in a new era of SJU tennis. Starting with the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the senior class saw the team improve steadily over each season. A four-year letterwinner, Matz capped her career with 17 singles wins, adding versatility to the lineup with her ability to play each singles flight. Walsh, serving as team captain, posted her best season on Hawk Hill, winning five singles matches and finishing her career with 12 victories. Finishing with the third most wins all-time at sixth singles with 10, Dowd finished the year with a 7-2 mark, with six coming at the sixth flight to tie for fifth most in a year. Also competing during the year were junior Jenna Procyk and sophomore Michele Vona. As a team, the Hawks started slow despite being competitive in nearly every match. A few wins in Florida helped SJU getting going in the right direction, as the team flourished at the end of the regular season, winning four of its last five matches, including a win over Villanova. Seeded 11th in the A-10 Championship, the Hawks put forth a strong effort against higher seed George Washington. Saint Joseph’s had two players at match point when the contest was called in the Colonials’ favor. Even though the season came to a close for the Hawks, the strong performances, both as a team and individually, has Saint Joseph’s poised to become one of the top teams in the A-10 and the region.

Vice President for Athletics Athletic Director

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.

• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.

• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.

• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.

• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.

• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 24

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addi-

tion, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent

record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
