San Jose Earthquakes vs. LA Galaxy, Oct. 21, 2012, 4 p.m. PT Wondolowski Breaks MLS Single Season Record for Game-Winning Goals Chris Wondolowski recorded his 10th game-winning goal of the season in San Jose’s 2-1 victory over Seattle Sounders FC on Sept. 23, a new MLS record. The previous mark was nine set by Wondolowski in 2010 and former LA Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz in 2002. Wondolowski has scored the game winner in 10 of San Jose’s 18 wins to date. 20-Goal Club Chris Wondolowski became the 10th player in MLS history to score 20 or more goals in a single season with his brace in San Jose’s 2-2 draw against Portland on Sept. 19. He added to that total with the game-winning goal against Seattle on Saturday, upping the Budweiser Golden Boot leader’s haul to 22 on the year. The last player to score 20 in a single season was Landon Donovan with the LA Galaxy in 2008. Before that, the last time a player scored 22 or more in a season was 2002 when Carlos Ruiz and Taylor Twellman scored 24 and 23, respectively. Wondolowski Breaks Club Record for Goals in a Single Season With two games remaining in the MLS regular season, Chris Wondolowski has already shattered his previous club record for goals in a single season. The Budweiser Golden Boot leader has 25 to date, seven more than his haul two years ago to set the Earthquakes’ benchmark. Mr. October Chris Wondolowski has scored 14 goals in October over the last three years, nine more than No. 2 on that list, Dwayne De Rosario. Wondolowski scored six in five games in 2010 en route to his first Budweiser Golden Boot and followed up with five in four games in 2011. He has three so far in 2012. Efficient Scorers Alan Gordon and Chris Wondolowski lead MLS in goals per 90 minutes among players with at least 1,000 minutes logged in 2012. Gordon has scored an amazing clip of 0.90 goals per 90 minutes while Wondolowski is next on the list with a 0.85 rate. Injured Toronto FC forward Danny Koevermans is third at 0.68 followed by Real Salt Lake’s Alvaro Saborio at 0.67. Quakes Set Single Season Goals Record With their four goals against Chivas USA on Sept. 2, the Earthquakes eclipsed the previous club record for goals in a single season (55) set in 1997. San Jose’s running total is up to 69 with two games remaining. More Goals The Quakes have scored 69 goals in 32 games for a 2.16 per game average. The Earthquakes are the first team to score two goals per game for a season since the Miami Fusion scored 57 goals in 26 games and the LA Galaxy scored 52 times in 26 games in 2001. Only 10 teams have averaged two or more goals per game for an entire season. Team Goals The Earthquakes are aiming to become the first team since 1998 and the fourth in MLS history to score 70 or more goals in a single season. San Jose has 69 in 32 games, trailing the 1998 LA Galaxy (85), 1998 D.C. United (74) and 1997 LA Galaxy (70) on the all-time list. Goals Aplenty The Earthquakes have only been held off the scoreboard twice in 2012, on March 17 in a 1-0 loss against the Houston Dynamo and July 7 in a 0-0 draw at FC Dallas. The club record for least times being shut out in a season is three in 1997. Free-Kick Goals The Earthquakes scored three free-kick goals against Chivas USA on Sept. 2, the most on record in a single game since Elias was hired as the official statistician of MLS in 2003. Victor Bernardez began the onslaught with a swerving free kick from 35 yards out in the 11th minute and Ramiro Corrales tacked two on in the second half as San Jose cruised to a 4-0 win. Three-Headed Monster Earthquakes forwards Chris Wondolowski (25), Alan Gordon (13) and Steven Lenhart (10) are the first trio from the same team to score 10 or more goals in a season since 2002. Their haul is the most by three players in club history, 15 more than the previous San Jose benchmark set in 1996. Additionally, those three have accounted for more goals (48) than every MLS team except for the LA Galaxy (56), New York Red Bulls (54), D.C. United (49) and Seattle Sounders FC (48). Quakes Linking Up San Jose leads MLS in team assists with 72 in 32 games, 11 more than the next-best on the list, the LA Galaxy. Marvin Chavez leads the club and is tied for No. 4 in MLS with 11 assists.
