This year we have two anniversary celebrations: Chorlton Book Festival is in its tenth year and Chorlton Library is 100 years old. Highlights include the award winning local author Jackie Kay, a celebratory play ‘Opening 1914’ from The Edge Theatre, an Under-5s Storytime, an Ugly Bug Ball, teenagers writing event with a WW1 soldier, fascinating local history from Andrew Simpson and the ever popular Beech Pub Quiz. Whatever your age and interest, with 23 events Chorlton is the place to be for 16 days this November. So come and join us.
Readers, writers and would-be writers are out in force in south Manchester for some book-related action at the tenth Chorlton Book Festival. All the featured guests have Chorlton connections, which makes M21 arguably the city’s most literary suburb. All events are free and at Chorlton Library unless stated. For those events where booking is advised, this can be done at Chorlton Library or by calling 0161 227 3700.
Friday 14 November
Manky Poets with Copland Smith. Special guest poet Tony Roberts: 7.30–9.30pm Tony Roberts was born in Doncaster and educated in England and America. His poems, reviews and essays appear regularly in the literary press. A former teacher, he lives in Manchester. All welcome. £2
Saturday 15 November
Food for the Soul – Market stall outside the library: 11am–3pm
Meet storyteller and wood-carver Richard O’Neill. Listen to his unique take on traditional Romany and North Country stories. Come and buy some hand-carved gifts.
Ugly Bug Ball: 2–4.30pm
Come along dressed as your favourite bug for an afternoon of fun-filled activities and a chance to win a prize. We expect to see ladybirds, butterflies, bumblebees, caterpillars, beetles, spiders, and many more. So join us for all things bug! All children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Ages 5–10.
Bottletop bugs: 2–4pm
Make yourself a bottletop pet bug by recycling a plastic bottle top and used card at our Rubbish Revamped workshop. Ages 6 upwards.
Saturday 15 November Headline event: Jackie Kay 7.30–9pm St Werburgh’s Church, Chorlton, M21 0HU
Join local author Jackie Kay, fresh from the internationally acclaimed Manchester Literature Festival, at our own headline event. Listen to Jackie’s readings and join us for refreshments and book-signing in this majestic setting. Jackie Kay, who was born and brought up in Scotland, is the author of several prize-winning collections of poetry, short stories, plays and the memoir Red Dust Road. The Adoption Papers (Bloodaxe) won the Forward Prize, a Saltire prize and a Scottish Arts Council Prize. Fiere, her
most recent collection of poems, was short-listed for the Costa award. Her novel Trumpet won the Guardian Fiction Award. Red Dust Road (Picador) won the Scottish Book of the Year Award, and the London Book Award. She was awarded an MBE in 2006, and made a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2002. She is Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University. Tickets £5 Booking is recommended for this popular event.

What did we do in The Great War? Stories from Chorlton-cum-Hardy.
Hosted by Copland Smith (local poet). A literary quiz to test the most well read and cultivated of memories. Prizes for the winners. £1 to enter, payable at The Beech.
Local History Talk – Andrew Simpson: 2–3pm The Post Box Café, Wilbraham Road, M21 9PP
The Beech Pub Quiz: 8pm
Chorlton-cum-Hardy did its bit in the Great War and the talk will look at some of the men who went off to fight, those who never came back, and how their families got on with their daily routine. It will include those forgotten Red Cross Hospitals that were staffed and partly supported by the people of Chorlton, and the letters, postcards and souvenirs of those from the Great War. Join us for our local history talk complete with soup and mulled wine. £4.75. Booking is recommended for this popular event.
Monday 17 November Short Story Writing Workshop: 4–6pm
An action-packed creative workshop in which prize-winning writer Valerie O’Riordan will teach you how to produce your own short story in less than two hours! No experience is necessary, but a sense of humour and adventure is definitely a must for this unique literary escapade! For ages 11–16. Limited places, so book your place.
Wednesday 19 November Opening 1914: 7pm
As a special celebration of our wonderful library being 100 years old, The Edge are presenting a brand-new show, which will be performed at both the library and at The Edge as part of the festival. Get dressed up as your favourite book character and come and listen to stories, songs and rhymes and meet our special guest! For under-5s.
Grand Day Out (over-50s session): 2–4pm

Devised and performed by Anne Rutter, featuring Stephen Thorne In this centenary year of the birth of Dylan Thomas, hear the untold story of his courageous, humorous, talented daughter from a friend. This performance will feature anecdotes, recitations of Dylan Thomas’s work and personal accounts of his daughter’s life and work. Book Fair: 11am–5pm Horse and Jockey, The Green, Chorlton, M21 9HS
The Horse and Jockey is holding its first Book Fair. With collectors’ books, antique books and art books, there will be something for all book-lovers.
Diary of a Soldier: 2–4pm
Meet Tommy Atkins, World War One soldier, with his original uniform and kit, and be inspired to write your own creative diary entries about experiences in the Great War. Ages 10–16. Places are free but booking is recommended.
War Horse Interactive Storytelling Workshop: 11am–12 noon
Come and help our storyteller bring to life the exciting and terrible events of Michael Morpurgo’s beloved story of Joey the horse and his owner Albert, who travels to World War 1 in search of him. Aimed at children under 9 years and their families. Places are limited, so book early.
Ellen Taylor: What’s a Story?: 1.30–3pm Creative Writing Workshop The Edge Theatre and Arts Centre, Manchester Road, M21 9JG Find out how dramatic structure works from professional writer Ellen, a regular writer for Coronation Street.
