Essence •  Global consumption of poultry products has increased over years. •  Increased demand for poultry = increased demand for feeds in poultry sector. •  Downside: Competition for feeds between poultry and humans •  Trend in Uganda: Shift from local poultry to wild poultry types like quails and guinea fowls. 4

Objectives 1. To determine feeding practices characterizing domestication Japanese quail and guinea fowl production in Uganda. 2. To characterize the nutritional value of conventional and non-conventional feed resources used. 3. To evaluate growth, meat and egg characteristics of domesticated Japanese quail and guinea fowl. 4.  To assess farmer perceptions of diets based on conventional and non-conventional feed resources. 6

The Science •  Adap,ng feed formulae from other countries to Uganda’s poultry industry •  Nutri, onal analysis of the feed resource composi,on •  Nutri, onal and meat quality analysis of study Birds •  Perform GIT microbiology depending on feeds •  Immune status of birds/serum immunology to diseases (quail) due to feeding 7

Community benefits 1.  Healthier communities: Alternative protein source. 2.  Employment: Youths and women 3.  Ex-situ conservation of guinea fowls and quails 4.  Food security: Less competition for feed between humans and poultry. 5.  Economic: Cheaper, alternative natural feeds from locally available natural resources 8

Personal benefits 1.  Conduct my research and finish my PhD in time. 2.  Career growth 3.  Quality of teaching for my students 4.  Contribution to food security. 9

Spin-offs •  Networks and collaborations •  Mentorship program •  Grant writing •  Visibility (Personal, Institutional and continental) in the Science World. 10
