Mike Wengren Designing Wraps for the “Immortalized” Tour
Mike Wengren is anything if not astounding behind the drums. But beyond that, he’s also a damned good guy, “One to ride the river with,” as Louis L’Amour might have said. And, normally, I am not a man who immediately likes others on first meeting, but Mike has a demeanor that makes those he engages immediately feel like they’ve known him personally for years.
I have found that there are few people I meet in this line of work that can truly engage me on a level to where I feel it is a mutual sharing of intellectual intercourse where BOTH members come away from the experience desiring a cigarette “after.” But, Mike is a pretty smart cookie, he is also very intense, direct. He is also persuaded by a selfproclaimed OCD personality (hey, aren’t ALL drummers?). Possessing this type of personality also means that he demands a specific level of quality and aesthetic to the work his name will be attached to before he’d be willing to allow me to put this imagery all over his drum set on his band’s stage! When he contacted me to make a pair of front head sets for Disturbed’s 2016 Tour, he sent me logos and some simple direction. Which, normally, is all it takes... but this tour was special as they were coming out of a five year hiatus and supporting an amazing new album release. So I wanted to do something extra special for Mike. And since I have been working with him since I started this business, I wanted to attempt to persuade him into trying something we hadn’t tried together yet; as up to now, all we’d done together was custom drum heads.
The first set of drum heads I did for Mike in 2011
Being as Mike is an endorsed artist for Pearl Drums, we had to convince Pearl to allow us to recover a drum set that they wanted to advertise to support their new Music City Custom Shop based out of Nashville, TN. Which meant, they would PROBABLY want to show off The Stage Plotter Mike eMailed me THEIR finish... but we had to try. Mike called Pearl and put in a word to Mike Farris that he wanted to use Sic•Skinz on the drums... He Disturbed Stage Plotter - 2016 Immortalized Tour agreed, as long as they had the right to use the imagery to advertise their new Custom Shop efforts. No problem there, and thank you, Mike Farris! So, drum set and permission secured, the creative process began -- and a fun process it was. I even got to wrap the Bass Drums and Hoops myself. But, that a story for another time and another forum. As with all works of art, you have to start with a blank canvas and hope for some type of influence or insight to hit you of what it is you want to create. And if that piece of artwork is intended to be used in coordination with OTHER mediums of art; you need a sense of “continuity”. So, I asked Mike if the band had a stage plotter yet, and if so, could he share it. A few moments later, there was a mockup of the full frontal view of Disturbed’s Stage Plot. in my eMail inbox... Upon receiving the plotter, I took to Photoshop and roughed up a simple idea -- and sent it across. Mike liked where the design was heading and it opened the groundwork for us to get our heads together to make this thing even more personal to him and more interesting on the stage. So, Mike asked if we could incorporate the NHL Blackhawks into the design somehow. I can’t quite recall how it escalated from there, but we decided to add logos Well, that would be a lot, so we limited it down to three items representative of things important to Mike throughout his musical and personal life. Having chosen his love of hockey as the first image, we focused on his professional career for the other two. The first drawn version of “The Guy” -- Disturbed’s mascot from “The Sickness”, and the cover image from the “Believe” album. And with the latest album title being designed into the drum heads, his entire career could be represented throughout the kit’s entire design. When I first saw the plotter, I really liked the rubble and parts of demolished buildings, so, I wanted the base imagery to be comprised of stonework that had been shattered by a violent upheaval revealing iron grid work and molten stone and steel. The logo images were distributed throughout each wrap in a random way like they were spray-painted onto the stone prior to the upheaval and thus, damaged, but still intact (pretty deep, huh?). We both wanted the stonework and magma to be the focal point, and not the logos, so we kept them small and eroded, but still recognizable.This is what we came up with for the Toms and the Bass Drums... One of the biggest challenges was to design the back and foreground elements around the hardware, thinking literally, but designing creatively. So as not to have a lug or an air vent placed over one of the icons was important. The broken up concrete and lava helped to break up the linear parallelism of each shell of the drum set. Thus, helping to improve the aesthetic and give a little more chaos to the stage design.

final bass drum wrap design The Bass Drums needed to be handled a little differently than the toms and floor toms, due to the audience’s perspective. So the elements of interest had to be increased in size and rotated ninety degrees so they laid down the sides of the drum shells -- right side up to the audience’s eye from left or right-side angle viewing. I also wanted to extend the design beyond the limitations of the shell to try to camouflage the drum hoops a little more, as well. The Blackhawks logo, we placed on top of each Bass Drum, smack dab in the middle! For the drum heads, we always want the band’s name to be the focus. Obviously. But, it’s also important that the band’s name is able to be read at the BACK of the venue as well as close up. So, during the performance, I intentionally sat as far back as possible because I wanted to see how well the band logo and graphics showed up. The logos cut right through all the fog, lasers, loud and pounding kicks, and stage lights just fine! Afterward, my wife and I hung out with Mike and he and I stroked each other’s egos and shared our mutual “Appreciation” for each other’s talents and diligence in getting this drum set designed and these images to you (inside joke between my Wife, Mike, and Myself.) We talked about guns, musicianship, expectations in others that we work with, and even enjoyed a couple glasses of wine while sharing some personal jokes and stories. He was incredibly accommodating to my wife and I and made us feel welcome and warmly received -- almost as if we were family. I close with this; I have been designing for a very long time, and I have designed graphics for pro-level drummers for over eight years; but until March 12th, 2016, I have never experienced the one-on-one attention Mike and his tech Nick Engle extended. And I certainly have never had any one tell me that the drum set my design work is on is now their favorite drum set of all time. Step 2. Place your wrap around the shell... allowing the end with the double-sided tape to overlap the other end.
Step 3. Remove the strip from the double-stick tape and press it down.
Step 4. Replace your hardware and put your heads back on.

In most cases, we can turn your wrap orders around within 4 days to a week. But keep in mind that we custom manufacture every order as they are taken. In some instances your order may be slightly delayed do to circumstances outside of our control. When ordering a custom-wrap, it can take longer. So, basically, what we are saying is... if you are asking us to do something entirely custom... we ask you to call upon your own grasp of common sense, and not contact us a day after you place an order, wondering where your tracking number is. And please don’t send us your drum set and expect us to restore the kit with all new hardware and rims -- for $25 a shell, we will clean up what you send us and put wraps on it, no more. Got it? However, if you ask, we’d be happy to do even more with your set... you just need to be willing to pay for it. Make sense ;)
