Cover Kit: Tim Yeung’s Custom Skull Kit When you can sit down behind a single Bass Drum with a double foot pedal and bare feet... and YOU can rip out around 896 BPM with JUST those two feet... then you are MAN enough for a drum set this F-ing MEAN! And Tim likes his drums as fast as he likes his cars. But not only fast, they have to LOOK bad-ass too. So,when Tim reached out to me with a request to make his Morbid Angel tour kit look Dark, Heavy, and Mean... my mind immediately went to H.R.Giger. I mean, what can be darker, heavier, and meaner than something in his style? He created the Alien creature... plus he paints some pretty twisted and dark stuff. So, I started with his image of the Skull Press, extracted the image from it’s background, and then filled all of the negative space with dark, twisted, and horror-specific imagery, like Giger would have done. I chose imagery that conveyed the “darker” elements of man’s psyche. And images that feed off the more sinister and macabre (ociferus penises, devil babies, gargoyles, skulls, “goo”, etc.). But it also had to be Black and White to get the HEAVY feel I wanted it to convey. Below is an image of the final Wrap design. This design made Tim quite happy; not to mention his fans world-wide. Brien’s Area: The KISS-Themed Gift Snare Project Every now and again, I am treated with a project request from a customer that excites me. This time, it was a request for a KISS-themed Snare for a gentleman who wished to have it built for a friend of his. Nice gift! Anyway, KISS has always been very special to my heart as they were the very first Rock Concert I’d been to. And all through my teens, my walls were covered with their images and their records were spinning on my box turntable almost 24 hours a day. So, when this project request came across, it gave me an extra little tingle in my “manly parts”. OF COURSE I would do it!
Since this was meant to be given as a gift, I started with a .25” thick 5.5” x 14” American Poplar shell. I know, not an overly special wood by any toss; but excellent for something someone may wish to put in a glass case, or hang on the wall. Because it’s light-weight.
The next thing I did was add the KISS wrap. The design was simple as the images were already readily available online, I just had to be creative in the way I arranged each one in relation to each other and get the images of the band members as equally distributed around the shell as possible. Acheiving that, I also wanted to have every member represented around the shell. I also wanted to try to give special honor in three areas. 1 800 768 4518 kicking at the time I write this. I just wanted the two flesh-colored images to sit on either side of the strainer relaese for aesthetics purposes). Second, I allowed the four ORIGINAL members to share special honor in the center of the design. And then, lastly, I gave Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons extra, extra-special positioning by giving their likenesses their own space between lugs, on either side of the KISS logo as they are the only two members that have been in the band since the beginning. For the head, I was originally thinking I would do the cover as it was. But, upon mentioniung this to the buyer, he mentioned the name of the gentleman it was for and thought it would be cool if we could replace “OVER” with his name “ALMZ”, but replace the Z with the KISS “S”. No problem. Using Illustrator, I was able to take pieces of different existing letters to create the letter I needed, resulting in the text reading as, “Rock And Roll Alms”. To finish the drum off, I stuck with the chrome hardware motif since KISS was always known for wearing a lot of black leather or spandex with a lot of silver studs. And since Gene Simmons loves spikes... I used Maniac lugs by EGO. I intended to upgrade the hoops to die-cast, and replace the throw-off with either a Trick or a EGO throwoff. Unfortunately, I had to abandon that idea due to budgetary concerns. Giving respect to the customer’s wallet, I ultimately settled for the less-expensive flanged hoops and a Griffin throw-off. The entire weight of this snare is perfect for wall mounting. It comes in at only 4.25 pounds, but is LOUD as hell. For this snare, I went with a slightly longer T-Rod to lock the heads down to critical depth. So, nobody would be tempted to tune or play it. But, if the guy who received it wanted to play the drum, all he would have to do is replace all the tension rods with slightly short ones, and they’d be ready to roll. Or, would that be “Rock and Roll... Over”? As with all my builds, it has been internally hand-signed and dated.

Step 1. Remove all hardware (badges, air hole grommets, etc.) from your shell. Make sure the shell is smooth.

Step 3. Remove the strip from the double-stick tape and press it down.
Step 4. Replace your hardware and put your heads back on.
