H

ey everyone! Sadly it’s September which means back to school which really sucks. School is a pain for everyone but it’s important so we have to deal with it positively.

W

elcome to September and the return to school. Here are 9 top tips for make the transition more rewarding!

1. Get a good night's sleep If you're always tired at school, it will be extremely difficult for you to stay focused and learn. Take that from a girl that knows! Most teenagers need at least 8 hours of sleep each night to function at their best, so make sure you go to bed early enough. I know it may be ‘uncool’ to do so but it’ll be worth it at the end!

2. Eat Breakfast Make sure to eat a filling and healthy breakfast before school. Healthy snacks like fruits and nuts can help keep you energised throughout the day. Maybe have something like a boiled egg with soldiers (toast) or yogurt with fruit and nuts. It's also important to keep yourself hydrated, so bring a water bottle to school with you and keep refilling it throughout the day. Schools usually have a water fountain so there’s no reason why you can’t keep filling your bottle up.

3. Avoid Distractions

5. Use Libraries

It may be tempting to ignore your teacher and do something else if you find a lesson boring, but this will only make things much harder when you need to do your homework and take tests. Keep your phone and anything else that is not related to your class in your bag. If you have it in your pocket you’re going to be tempted!

Many students choose to use the library as a place to socialise, but try to avoid this if you have work that you could be doing. Motivate yourself to stay focused by reminding yourself that whatever work you don't complete now, you'll have to do at home. I do most of my homework in the library or at breaks and lunches elsewhere so I don’t have to do it at home.

4. Take Notes One of the best ways to stay engaged during a lesson is to take notes. Whether you're listening to your teacher or reading something independently, jot down the main points. Don’t write down everything, put things into your own words because then you’ll understand it later! If you don't want to raise your hand and ask your question in the middle of the lesson, write it down and ask your teacher later. You can also ask questions even if you understand the subject perfectly. You might want to know more about a specific topic or how it relates to other things you have learned about. This shows curiosity and interest, so your teacher will be happy to answer your questions.

6. Stay Organised Make sure to keep all of your notes and past tests in one place. Different systems work best for different people, but all that really matters is that you know exactly where to find something when you need it. For example, all mine are on a shelf in my wardrobe. This will make it much easier to review what you have already learned when it's time to prepare for tests or big assignments. It's also important to keep your completed homework assignments in the same place every day so you don't lose them. There's nothing worse than losing points for an assignment that you actually did on time! I suggest putting them in a folder and keeping it in your school bag.

7. Have a Plan and a Schedule In order to get the most out of your studying and avoid the stress of cramming at the last minute, it is important to plan out a schedule in advance. Studying a little bit every night and dividing large assignments up into smaller parts will help you stay on track. It's best to get yourself in the habit of doing homework and studying at the same time every day. You can extend your study period when you have more work to do, and end early on days when you have less work. Write down all of your assignments in a planner. If your schedule also includes extracurricular activities, work, or other commitments, make sure to keep track of them in the same place. This will help you visualise when you have time to do your work. Also make sure to give yourself enough time to complete each assignment. If you're not sure how long something will take, try asking the teacher for an estimate. This is especially important for big projects, like research papers. Your teacher can help you understand all of the various steps that are involved, so you can budget time for each one.

8. Understand Priorities While you should consider all of your schoolwork a priority, some assignments are more important than others. If you are struggling to manage your time, make sure not to waste too much on assignments that are not worth much. Instead, focus the majority of your attention on the assignments that will have the most impact on your final grade.

9. Find ways to revise

Read OVER 60 RAVE REVIEWS on our website!

Everyone learns differently, so the revision methods that are most effective for your friends might not work for you. Try to make studying more enjoyable for you by using the method that you genuinely find the most helpful, even if it's not conventional. This could include: spider diagrams, venn diagrams, posters, flash cards etc.

Diary of a teenager

I went shopping the other day with intentions not to spend much and I spent nearly £80. I am kind of angry at myself. However I did get five pairs of pyjamas, two band tees, a dress, a playsuit and two summer tops. I also got some more acrylic paint, dry shampoo and a new highlighter! Oh and lots of food! It was a really good day. I’m also learning how to play ‘Come as you are’ by Nirvana on guitar. It’s exciting, I’m loving it! Anyway I’ll have to go now! That’s it for this month..... Take care

Guess which flavour WINS the UK’s hearts!

W

e all love a munch, but can you guess what the UK's most beloved crisp flavour is? New data from the Snack, Nut and Crisp Manufacturers Association reveals the nine snacks that get us Brits salivating!

Number 9 in our countdown see Salt and vinegar's posh cousin making an entrance. Kettle Foods has been selling crisps in the UK since 1988, and its Salt and Balsamic Vinegar variety is now a firm favourite with you snackers!

Number 7 perhaps sees an unlikely entrant to the UK's top flavour list? Flame grilled steak. McCoy's, the third most popular branded crisp on the market, has won plenty of fans for its crinklecut crisp variety.

Number 8 in our ranking is bacon! Frazzles are the corn-based snack styled as rashers of bacon and manufactured by Walkers crisps. Fun fact: they are suitable for vegetarians as they contain no real bacon!

Number 6 Prawn cocktail is an iconic British flavour. However Skips, which were launched in the UK in 1974, are originally a Japanese savoury snack and are made under licence by KP.

Number 5. Public awareness around high salt intakes has driven manufacturers to reformulate their products and launch new lower salt flavours. Tyrrells Crisps was founded in 2002 by farmer Will Chase to focus on "quintessentially English" crisps - a strategy that has clearly paid off, as the UK buys bags and bags of this brand.

Number 4. Paprika and chilli flavours have always been more popular with our European cousins but Sensations, launched in 2002 as Walkers' "posh" range of crisps, have become an instant favourite with the British public. Thai sweet chilli is at number four in the ranking!

Make Your

Life Insurance Number 3 in our countdown. The first salt and vinegar crisps hit UK shelves in 1967 and the flavour combination is now as British as fish'n'chips. It wasn't until 1978 that first Pringle made it to our shores, courtesy of Proctor & Gamble, under the brand name "Stackers".

Number 2. The original flavour is still a firm favourite and number two on our list. Walkers Crisps is the UK’s most popular crisp maker. Henry Walker, a butcher by trade, set up shop in Leicester in the 1880s. By 1945, rationing meant that meat was scarce, so Henry branched out and began cooking slices of potatoes.

The most popular flavour is cheese and onion! WHAT!?! I hear you say! But it’s true! This classic flavour was first launched in the UK back in 1962 by Golden Wonder. But should the real winner be salt and vinegar? Last year, Golden Wonder launched a campaign against Walkers for putting cheese and onion crisps in a blue packet, befuddling consumers. Masterchef supreme Gregg Wallace is among the victims of the great green bag scandal. ummm naughty!

Is Your AIR CONDITIONING Working Correctly?

If not bring it to Cavendish Motors Limited AIR CONDITIONING To All Makes & Models

CREATE YOUR OWN CLIMATE

Mother nature may control the elements outside of your car, but inside your vehicle you are in control. The ability to create your own climate is a luxury one should never be without. Regular checks on your air conditioning system will insure you remain in control and keep the unwanted pollution, fumes and noise out of harm’s way. A serviced air conditioning system is also an important safety feature. When comfortable, you can have a higher level of concentration and so drive more safely. Passengers can stay fresh and more relaxed allowing all to enjoy what every journey you take...

STAY COOL ON EVERY JOURNEY Like all aspects of a vehicle, your air conditioning needs to be checked and maintained at regular intervals to perform to the high standards expected. Failure to care for your system can result in:

Watery eyes, sneezing and coughing caused by particles in the recycled air. • Unpleasant mouldy odours when using the system. • Poor performance from the system. • Windows can become steamed up. • Increased fuel consumption. • More expensive repairs as a result of corrosion and wear.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GAS?

Four Simple Tips: 1. Run your air con system regularly, in fact most systems are designed to be run all the time, winter and summer. In doing so the system will be properly lubricated. You’ll get the best from your air conditioning system and enjoy travelling in your own climate, no matter what’s happening outside. 2. If you don’t have the air conditioning on all the time, you should run it for at least 10 minutes every week throughout the year. So, you keep it running efficiently. 3. Have your air con system checked regularly. 4. Have your air con system serviced annually or at least every two years or 24,000 miles is the maximum you should sensibly leave it.

Traditionally, most modern car air conditioning systems have been filled with R134A. Car manufacturers have been forced to change the refrigerant used in the air conditioning system from 2017 onwards. The EU has decided that the refrigerant used for the past 20 years is less environmentally friendly than a refrigerant with a lower Global Warming Potential. HFO-1234yf is the refrigerant chosen to achieve this object and more usually now referred to as R1234yf even though it is an HFO. Originally planned to start in 2011 the start date was delayed for 2 years because the supplies of this refrigerant were so restricted. Supplies of this R1234yf are now available but it is extremely expensive. Although expected to reduce in price eventually it is forecast to always be much more expensive than the existing refrigerant R134a. At Cavendish we aim to keep the costs of servicing these systems down to a minimum.

Hi my human friends. It’s the beginning of September and Autumn will soon be knocking on the door. I hope you’ve all enjoyed your summer holidays and are now ready to embrace the turning of the seasons...

T

his month I wanted to write about your pooch’s dog sounds and the meaning of our ‘sighs’, ‘moans’ and maybe the occasional groan! Are we just drama queens or are we really trying to convey a certain message when we four-legged friends sigh? You see, groaning and sighing are pretty common dog sounds and they can express diverse emotions such as happiness and frustration. As a little guy myself, I feel it is important for you humans to learn what these signs mean and to know how to interpret your four-legged friend’s language in general. “Oh, yeah. That feels awesome!” If you pooch starts groaning or sighing when you’re petting him, it is not a sign of discomfort. He’s actually expressing his genuine delight for the attention! You see us fourlegged friends love nothing more than your full on attention! So when your pooch is groaning while you’re petting him, your dog is telling you that it feels great, and by making this sound he’s in fact encouraging you to keep it up! Don’t stop, don’t stop!

“I surrender…”

“I’m not feeling that great.”

Sighing can sometimes mean defeat. If your pooch was eyeballing some of your food while you were eating and he now realises he’s not getting any, you might hear him groaning as a way of saying: ”Oh, well. Maybe next time.” or “Well I never, how tight are you!”

Generally we pooches love to run, play and love, however occasionally groaning and sighing can sometimes mean that we aren't feeling too good? Health issues and discomfort, happen to us four-legged dudes too. You humans can mistake sighing for wheezing, which is a common indication of respiratory conditions such as suffering from a cold or maybe a slight bronchitis.

“Sleepy… So sleepy” If you’ve been for a walk or had a session of playing fetch, your pooch is probably tired and needs to doze off a bit. Personally, I love chasing my tennis ball around, but with my little legs, I soon get jaded, so leave me be! Sighing in these situations is usually accompanied by other signs of pre-napping behaviour such as stretching out in anticipation of a snooze coming! So let me be my human friend, I need to rest my gorgeous head for a while!

So if your beloved pooch starts showing the signs of sighing and groaning on a too frequent or excessive level, it could mean your pooch is in feeling unwell or maybe in pain? It is then the time to set up an appointment with the vet to have your four-legged buddy checked over.

Treasure Hunting!

A

side from us pooches being excellent companions, great running buddies, and loyal friends to you humans, some dogs are also prone to treasure hunting. I’m personally not a digger, but I do have furry friends who love it! So if your pooch likes to plough through your garden lawn, you might want to know what’s causing this and if you can do anything to stop it.

Dog VS. Dirt! For those pooches that love to dig, relax because it’s not just that not every breed has a tendency towards digging, but rather that each breed that does it has completely different reasons for doing it! For example, short-legged dogs simply follow their instincts. This means they usually dig to find moles, or other rodents. On the other hand, scent hounds often dig under fences just to get a crack at that squirrel on the other side of it! That said, there are cases in which a dog simply has nothing better to do than dig around. Boredom can be a dangerous enemy both for your pet and you, so make sure your pooch has plenty of things to do throughout the day. Finally, let’s not forget that some dog breeds will never stop digging. Take earth dogs for an example – this pooch has digging bred into him, which means the only thing you can do in this situation is to choose an area in which your pooch can dig to his heart’s content!

Treat Pooch To Some Actually Healthy Treats Anyone who ever had a dog knows that you can’t teach a canine anything if you don’t have a steady supply of doggy treats at your disposal. However, this doesn’t mean that you should give your pooch anything as a reward – instead, make sure you present your pooch with treats that are actually healthy.

Carrick Veterinary Group has recently relocated its Chesterfield branch to Holywell House (just off the donut roundabout). The new surgery is situated in a Grade II listed building, with private parking available and state-of-the-art facilities to help us care for your pet. As part of this exciting move, we are running a selection of discounts to both new and existing clients: The Healthy Pet Club – join our HPC scheme for a monthly fee, and receive exclusive benefits including vaccinations, worming and flea treatments throughout the year, a comprehensive six month health check every year, and great discounts with 10% off food, medication and other services and products. 10% Off Voucher– please bring the voucher below with you, and present it to reception to redeem your discount. Terms and conditions will apply. Recommend A Friend Scheme – ask at reception for further information on this scheme. If you recommend a friend who then visits us for an appointment, you will receive a £10 discount towards your pet’s next visit. Gold Card Scheme – we are offering discounted rates for people who must hold a valid Gold Card from Derbyshire County Council, and present it at the time of payment to qualify for 15% off treatment, during Monday - Friday.

(For use at any Carrick branch, towards any consultation, product or service charge)

It’s All In The Balance Whether it serves as a reward after doing an impressive trick or you give treats to your dog every time you come back home from work, these ‘snacks’ can also be used to improve your pet’s health and wellbeing in general. For example, you can treat your canine to some dental chews. By doing so, you help your pet preserve its dental health, which indirectly prolongs his life. Healthy teeth and gums equal a happy dog.

W

ell once again I have enjoyed sharing my poochlife with you humans! I feel that now we are getting to understand one another more we can both relax a little and enjoy the world of excitement, spontaneity and dog fun! I love being around my human friends and love sharing so much of my life with my master. I hope you too are gaining a greater understanding of what life is like on all fours (so to speak) Until next month, STOP STRTESSING and START LIVING! - The life of a Joey! WHOOF!

KNOWS BEST!

H A

i lovelies I do hope you are recovered from the school holidays and are ready to embrace the changing of the seasons and Autumn!

s lovely as it was to spend time with the grandkids, it's a big sigh of relief as peace and quiet descends upon the house! It’s time to put my feet up with a nice cuppa without interruption, bliss! I really love my grandchildren to bits, but the peace and quiet is pure heaven! If you’re lucky enough to have some time off in September than there’s still lots of events happening. If you fancy a couple of days in Yorkshire there's lots happening, from Jazz Festivals in Scarborough to Food Festivals for all you food lovers in Yorkshire and Walking Festivals too! Closer to home we have events each weekend at Bolsover Castle including Equestrian shows and Dressage being one of the main events. We also have the country fair at Chatsworth early in September. In Chesterfield itself you have the famous market, it’s great that we are lucky enough to still have this three times a week- four if you include the flea market on a Thursday, which I love having a browse round. We also have Wells Dressings through September. It's a lovely tradition that hopefully will never die out.

As a child I used to love being involved in the Wells Dressings, everything from the lovely Wells which take hours to decorate to the local procession which used to take place on a Saturday. My sister Linda and I would always be in the procession somewhere, either on one of the floats or with the local Majorettes. We would parade through the streets dancing and marching our way from beginning to end, lots of thigh slapping in those days. We would end up with bright red legs where we had been slapping them to music! Oh lovelies they were great times, so much more simple than these days. I really miss the old traditions which is why it's lovely to see that some of those traditions have not died out and are still going strong. Recently I was reading about the trips on Chesterfield canal which I didn't know anything about. Evidently they start from Hollingwood Hub. The old cruiser was built by Eckingham School in 2014 and trips last around 45 minutes, so lovelies something else for both you and me to try. Well of course this month means lots of harvesting of our apples and looking at our trees, I think it's going to be a bumper harvest, so sleeves rolled up and get cracking!

Nana’s Pork and Red Pepper Burgers This makes 8 Burgers

You will need: 1 tablespoon sunflower oil Half a large onion diced 3 Rashers of smoked streaky bacon finely chopped 1 Garlic clove crushed 75gms crust less bread 2 Tablespoons chopped parsley 450gms minced pork 2 Roasted red peppers (from a jar) drained Half teaspoon of salt Freshly ground black pepper

Method: Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the onions and bacon on a low heat until onion has softened. Add the garlic and fry for one minute. Place the bread and parsley in a food processor and whizz to make crumbs. Add the onions and bacon mixture, pork, red peppers, salt and plenty of black pepper - whizz until mixed. Shape the mixture into eight burgers and chill for 30 mins. Preheat your grill or barbecue and when hot, grill the burgers for about 6/8 mins each side until golden and cooked through, or cook in a little hot oil in a frying pan and once brown turn down the heat and cook through. Serve in burger buns with fresh salad or on a crusty roll, next to chips made with sweet potatoes for a healthy option to normal chips.

This is a lovely alternative to beef or chicken burgers and is really tasty. Enjoy!!!

I

remember lovelies going back to school after the long summer holidays. We always hated the first few weeks back after having all that freedom. We had to walk to school as there were no mums with cars in those days! In fact it was nice meeting friends and walking with them. We’d all moan about our new school shoes rubbing our feet! My dad used to rub the back of my sensible lace ups with soap to soften the leather, it used to work a treat as well! But we hated those sensible shoes, after wearing sandals all summer. Suddenly you had to wear heavy sensible lace up shoes, which had to last at least a year as money was always tight in those days. I wonder if any of your ladies remember our old school knickers, which used to be navy or brown and have pockets in them! We used to store our secret supply of sticky toffees in the pockets and goodness how many times I got into trouble for leaving them in the pockets when we put them out to be washed! Of course it wasn't a modern washing machine in those days, I remember my mum lighting the old boiler and sorting washing in piles, lights first then darks at the end.

She had to rinse by hand and then heaven forbid, but the wet washing through the mangle which was usually in the backyard. I remember getting my fingers stuck in that many a time and goodness lovelies how it used to hurt. I remember when we got our first twin tub washing machine, Dad saved up for ages and my mum loved it as it made her life so much simpler! Monday was always wash day in those days, it’s funny isn't it how our parents always had days for doing certain things and it never changed. I remember my nana always used to black lead her kitchen range on a Tuesday and it would shine when she had done it. I also remember people scrubbing their steps outside. You see old traditions were so much a big part of my childhood, goodness people would never cope these days! My saying for this month is sent to uplift you and is a very true saying:

I love you and leave you until next month! God Bless

Nana.xxx

Y

ou don’t have to be a musician to be in love with music. It plays a significant part in shaping our personalities and identities. Your music list defines you whether you can play an instrument or not. Revealing some of the greatest musicianship over the next few months, I would love to share with you some of the all time greatest albums ever recorded!

L

ed Zeppelin formed in London in 1968. The group consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. The band's heavy, guitar-driven sound has led them to be cited as one of the progenitors of heavy metal, though their unique style drew from a wide variety of influences, including blues, psychedelia, and folk music. After changing their name from the New Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin signed a deal with Atlantic Records that afforded them considerable artistic freedom. Although the group was initially unpopular with critics, they achieved significant commercial success with albums such as Led Zeppelin (1969), Led Zeppelin II (1969), Led Zeppelin III (1970), Led Zeppelin IV (1971), Houses of the Holy (1973), and Physical Graffiti (1975). Their fourth album, which features the song "Stairway to Heaven", is among the most popular and influential works in rock music, and it helped to secure the group's popularity. The untitled fourth studio album commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, was released on 8 November 1971 by Atlantic Records. Produced by guitarist Jimmy Page, it was recorded between November 1970 and January 1971 at several locations, most prominently the Victorian house Headley Grange.

After the band's previous album Led Zeppelin III received lukewarm reviews from critics, Page decided their fourth album would officially be untitled. This, along with the inner sleeve's design featuring four symbols that represented each band member, led to the album being referred to variously as the Four Symbols logo, Four Symbols, The Fourth Album, Untitled, Runes, The Hermit, and ZoSo (which was derived from Page's symbol). In addition to lacking an album title, the cover featured no band name, as the group wished to be anonymous and to avoid easy pigeonholing by the press. Led Zeppelin IV was a commercial and critical success, featuring many of the band's bestknown songs, including "Black Dog", "Rock and Roll", "Going to California" and "Stairway to Heaven". The album is one of the best-selling albums of all time with more than 37 million copies sold.It is tied for third highest-certified album in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America at 23Ă— Platinum. Writers and critics have regularly cited it on lists of the greatest albums of all time. The album was initially recorded at Island Records' newly opened Basing Street Studios, London, at the same time as Jethro Tull's Aqualung in December 1970.

Upon the recommendation of Fleetwood Mac, the band then moved to Headley Grange, a remote Victorian Estate house in East Hampshire, England, to conduct additional recordings. Here they used the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. Jimmy Page later recalled: "We needed the sort of facilities where we could have a cup of tea and wander around the garden and go in and do what we had to do." This relaxed, atmospheric environment at Headley Grange also provided other advantages for the band. As is explained by Dave Lewis, "By moving into Headley Grange for the whole period of recording, many of the tracks [on the album] were made up on the spot and committed to tape almost there and then." Once the basic tracks had been recorded, the band later added overdubs at Island Studios, and then took the completed master tapes to Sunset Sound in Los Angeles for mixing. However, the mix ultimately proved to be less than satisfactory, creating an unwanted delay in the album's release. Further mixing had to be undertaken in London, pushing the final release date back by some months.

In the lead-up to the album's release, a series of teaser advertisements depicting each symbol was placed in the music press. The album was a massive instant seller. It entered the UK chart at No. 10, rising to No.1 the following week and stayed on the chart for 90 weeks. In the US it stayed on the charts longer than any other Led Zeppelin album and became the biggest selling album in the US not to top the charts (peaking at #2). At one point, it was ranked as one of the top five best-selling albums of all time. Led Zeppelin IV received overwhelming praise from critics. In a contemporary review for Rolling Stone, Lenny Kaye called it the band's "most consistently good" album yet and praised the diversity of the songs: "out of eight cuts, there isn't one that steps on another's toes, that tries to do too much all at once." Billboard magazine called it a "powerhouse album" that has the commercial potential of the band's previous three albums. Page wrote most of Led Zeppelin's music, particularly early in their career, while Plant generally supplied the lyrics. Jones' keyboard-based compositions later became central to the group's catalogue, which featured increasing experimentation. The latter half of their career saw a series of record-breaking tours that earned the group a reputation for excess and debauchery. Although they remained commercially and critically successful, their output and touring schedule were limited during the late 1970s, and the group disbanded following Bonham's death from alcohol-related asphyxia in 1980. In the decades that followed, the surviving members sporadically collaborated and participated in one-off Led Zeppelin reunions. The most successful of these was the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London, with Jason Bonham taking his late father's place behind the drums. Track Listings: ‘Zep 1V’ Side one 1. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chesterfield & Mansfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
