Alfred Thayer Mahan One hundred years ago, on Septembei 27, 1840, Alfred Thayer Mahan was born at West Point, New York. His father was a distinguished professor at the Military Academy, and was a graduate of it, class of 1824. Young Mahan spent his early years at West Point, until he was sent in 1852 to a boarding school in Maryland. In 1854 he entered Columbia College. Through the influence of Jefferson Davis, he obtained an appointment to the Naval Academy. This was against the wishes of his father, who thought the boy better fitted for a civil than for a military career, but who believed that he should be allowed to make his own choice. Thus it was that on September 30, 1856, Mahan entered the Academy as "acting midshipman."

Having been weU prepared, he was able to pass the examinations for entrance with the second year men, and he was graduated in 1859. He rose from the rank of midshipman to that of lieutenant during the Civil War, and in June, 1865, to the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1885 he became a captain, and sometime later, became lecturer on Naval History and Strategy in the War College.

In 1896, he asked to be retired, after

forty years of service, in order to devote his entire time to writing on naval subjects. Later he was on special duty in connection with the Naval War College, was a member of the Naval War Board, Spanish American War, was a delegate to the Hague Peace Conference, and was the President of the American Historical Association.

A great number of Naval officers, some of whom had been stationed in Annapolis, responded to the call for funds from all sections of the globe, writing that they had always loved the house and wanted it to stay in Annapolis. A substantial part of the total price was raised in and

The organization has the money to pay for the building and work on the clearing of the title, which includes surveying and research, is progressing.

Mahan wrote some twenty major works on naval subjects, the most familiar of which are probably those directly concerning seapower. His works have had tremendous influence all over the world, and they have been translated into many different languages. He had a very keen sense of humor, and his scholarship did not interfere with his enjoyment of a good story. His book "Trom Sail to Steam; Recollections of a Naval Life" contains many rollicking stories from his midshipman days, and his life as a naval officer.

As a man, a naval officer, and a scholar, Mahan left a deep impression on the Navy and on the world. Though he died in 1914, as a rear admiral, retired, his works live on, a monument that will not easily fall.

around Annapolis. Officers and their families stationed at the Academy contributed to this amount, as well as permanent residents of the city.

Contributions also came from Yale University's fine arts department, from three other schools and from nearly 100 men's and women's clubs and patriotic societies. Descendents of both the Hammond and Harwood families helped in the drive in various ways, and garden clubs throughout the state were particularly helpful, Mrs. Slack said.

Members of the Garden Club of America, who included the mansion on their tour here in April, are still sending contributions.

The house, which the Association hopes to maintain as a museum, is open every week-day and on Sunday afternoons. Two hostesses alternate to show visitors around. Admission price will be 25 cents, the same as it has been for several years.

Several offers of furniture have been offered as loans and the organization hopes to acquire more pieces in keeping with the house. The number of visitors who went through the old home this year has trebled last year's quota.

Mrs. Miles White, Jr., is chairman of the Association; Mrs. Francis Beirne is secretary; Mrs. William Beavin, assistant secretary; Mrs. Albert Graham, treasurer, and Mrs. George Cutler, treasurer of the campaign fund. John Aviritt is the organization's legal adviser.

E. M. Jackson, Jr., headed the Annapolis committee for the drive. Albert H. MacCarthy, '97, was treasurer and Mrs. John M. Green, secretary.

Asiatic Station Our trip out in the COOLIDGE was not uneventful. Between Honolulu and Yokohama we ran through the bad weather which proved to be the undoing of Richard Halliburton. A most interesting article in the April Institute written

by Dale Collins, the Chief Officer of the COOLIDGE, tells of our connection with the Halliburton junk, "SEA DRAGON"; since Mrs. Coney and I were seated at Mr. Collins' table for the voyage, we had first hand information of the "goings on."

We disembarked in Hongkong as I had received orders to command the M I N D A N A O , flag of the South China Patrol. The ship had been held over for a day or so from her scheduled trip to Canton waiting for my arrival, the former skipper having been detached a week or so previously. I took over at once and on the following morning we left Hongkong.

It seemed funny to be on my way to Canton as it was less than a year before when, comfortably seated in my quarters at the Academy and with no intention of again going to China, 1 had looked over the pictures of the Canton bombing and wondered just how much the face of the city had been changed since my last visit there in the winter of 1923. I was soon to find out as my orders arrived unexpectedly and soon thereafter.

After passing the forts at Bocca Tigris, about fofty miles from Canton, the ship enters the Pearl River proper. From this point to Canton, the Japanese are nominally in complete control of the terrirory. Their flag flies from the forts at the entrance where there are generally one or two men of war as well as a few transports and supply ships; naval units ate often passed (with an exchange of salutes) on the river; and small detachments of the army may be seen in most of the badly shelled villages near the river bank. To all appearances, these military people are living on perfectly agreeable terms with the Chinese, each going about their own business in a more or less detached way.

And this year there are some mighty green ones, for the last lot, admitted after the usual time, have barely got the stencil ink of their hands. N o doubt the salty upperclassmen, particularly the toplofty Youngsters, will see that they are quickly initiated into the mysteries and rites peculiar to the Naval Academy.

The Firstclassmen have varied attimdes toward the February graduation this year. Some of them who have been dragging anchor onto Academic Head or Regulation Reef are jolly well glad that fair winds and calm seas are in sight.

But most of them are a bit sorry that their first class year, when they are the kings of all they survey, or at least all of the underclasses, will so soon be gone.

Perhaps it is just an inmition of the time when they will be green and storm-tossed Ensigns out in the Fleet.

The Academy grounds are changing so rapidly that I have to get a Jimmylegs to guide me around every time I go in there. The new wing of the chapel, the museum, the new dispensary, a larger laundry, down by the old steam plant, Melville Hall, where the Steam Boys hang out, new quarters for hospital personnel, and the brick apartments for the officers, behind the hospital and over on the golf course, have replaced a lot of green lawns and open spaces. Then there are some piles out in the river at the mouth of College Creek, which looks as though there might be a drill ground just below the cemetery. The gym is being altered, to provide some squash courts on the lower deck, with the main exercise deck raised to the level of the old indoor track. We hear too that there are to be new wings on Bancroft Hall, to accommodate the growing regiment.

Ah, those good old days! 1 have heard that even the "bad boys' barracks" on the Reina has been discontinued, and that errant midshipmites are now put under hack in their rooms. ""Captain Bill" Stayton, '81, a prominent D. C. lawyer, and President-Emeritus of our Alumni Association wrote in to say, "The inteiesting letter from Jim Brown, '80, which appeared in July SHIPMATE recalls one of many of Jim's bright and cheerful sayings and doings.

Here's the yam: """We were on the old TENNESSEE. Huntoon, '80, one of Jim's classmates, was with us in the steerage. Speaking in bibulous terms, that steerage was not dty. Incidentally, Bill Sims, '80, was there, and so was Bill Durand, '80. " "We went to sea for some six weeks on the first squadron drill I ever took part in. During the diill, we had a chance to talk over the matter of our bar room

habits, and Jim Brown and Huntoon entered into a compact to stop drinking for six months. '" "We went back to Hampton Roads, and the first day there Huntoon went ashore with Jim's blessing and leaving promises of abstinence. " 'Huntoon came back in the officers' dinner boat, and needed a little help in navigating. Brown plastered Huntoon against a bulkhead, and after lecturing him on broken promises, announced, "I am going ashore tomorrow and will come back showing you a model of respectability and sobriety." "' 'The next day, Jim went ashore and returned in the dinner boat in exactly the condition Huntoon had been in, the day before. " "Huntoon, having plastered Jim against the bulkhead, called his attention to his promise that he would be a ""model," but when Huntoon was very positive on the subject, Jim said, ""Well, if I did say model, it was a slip of the tongue; I meant muddle!"'"

(Ret.), called "'The Navy's Best Stories," and published by the Wetzel Publishing Co., Inc., Los Angeles. ""Fighting Bob" Evans, Commodore Joe Fife, Admiral Leutze, stomp their lusty way through the pages of this book. Red Magiuder takes over, and the monkey of the Nebraska capers in the figging. There ought to be a lot of chuckles in it for all of you.

Captain Ellicott has written a small book called "Super-Contract Bridge," published by George Coffin, Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. This ought to give some of you biidge sharks a chance to get out of the same old routine of Culbertson, Lenz, et al, and to try your wits on something just a little different. According to the book, it is ""introducing the joker as a master card, but not as a "widow.'" You can keep your favorite system, but you might have the joker— if you are lucky—as a sort of spare shot in the locker. Price $0.75, postpaid.

Another Opportunity The fact that the tremendous expansion of aviation at this time offers opportunity to many retired naval officers or Naval Academy graduates to instruct in navigation and other ground school subjects under the CAA Training Program.

The standard pay for this instruction is about $5.00 per hour and usually a lesson is two to three hours and these lessons are given from one to five times per week.

Since our organization is in close touch with this development, we shall be glad to do what we can to place interested persons in this work. In order to give this instruction, the Civil Air Board requires an instructor to hold a "certificate of competency" for giving this instruction. The examinations are not difficult and are held in various parts of the country.

I suggest that anyone interested communicate with us or see our representatives in various parts of the country. We will be glad to do what we can to indicate the scope of the examinations and to coach them as necessary and then assist them in getting a position as teachers. It is often possible to give this instruction in the evenings as a parttime job.

WHAT'S THE DOPE? 1883 SHIPMATE

M. send in "Yes, I remember" appearing elsewhere in this nimiber, but also the following interesting article: "A story told to me years ago by my Father-in-Law, the late Colonel Charles F. Williams, Sr., U.S.M.C, is I think, worth preserving.

"Soon after the fall of Port Royal during the Civil War he (then Lieutenant Williams) got permission to go ashore and walk around the town. He was landed near the end of a pier, but at its irmer end was stopped by a marine sentry, one of his own guard, with a demand for the countersign. " 'I forgot to get it,' said Williams, "but you know who I am.' " 'You can't pass without it, Sir,' said the sentry, bringing his rifle to a 'charge bayonet.'

"Williams shrugged, went out on the pier again and sat on a mooring bollard to await the next boat in from his ship, not due for more than an hour.

"The sentry shouldered his gun, marched past Williams, made an about face and started back, saying as he again passed: " 'It's a warm day in Port Royal, Sir.' "Williams merely grunted. The sentry came to 'order arms' at the inner end of the pier, stood so for awhile, then again shouldered his gun and marched past Williams, saying on his retiurn: " 'There was a big fire today in Port Royal, Sir.' "As he again came to "order arms' at the inner end of the pier, young Williams thought he saw the light. He arose and approached the sentry. '"Halt! W h o comes there?' said the latter, coming to a 'ready.' " 'Officer,' replied Williams. "'Advance officer with the countersign,' said the sentry. " 'Port Royal,' said Williams. " 'Countersign correct. Pass officer,' said the sentry, saluting as Williams passed."

Incidentally, SHIPMATE regrets the typographical error made in J. M.'s second initial. It appeared in the July number as W. The Captain possesses a grand sense of humor, for which he is to be congratulated, and which we appreciate.

The war in Europe has made some change in the conduct of the social life of Shameen for, while the island is nominally internationalized, control is largely vested in the French and British Consulates and while several of the Germans continue to live there and to do business, there is little mingling socially between the former intimate friends now turned enemies, and we Americans were just about the only ones who had social contact with both sides. French, British and Germans, Japanese and Chinese, we officers of the M I N D A N A O were, through the natore of our duty, thrown in close contact with all. Our relations were cordial always and all formed friendships which will not soon be forgotten.

I cannot speak too highly of the two splendid Canadian Catholic Sisters who, 16

with a pitifully small Chinese staff and no supplies, are caring for six hundred insane men, women and children in the Chinese Government asylum, nor of the two fine American women who, in the face of many difficulties continue to keep open the school for blind children nearby. We of the MiNDY tried to help these people to the best of our ability and limit of our resources. In the gratitude of the recipients, we felt more than repaid for our efforts to bring some cheer into their lives.

The declaration of war found Hongkong not unprepared. Enemy male nationals were quickly interned in one of the large universities and enemy property and business was taken over by the government. Suitable defense measures were at once instimted and our old "side kicks" of the British gunboat Navy, now always in uniform, would depart on frequent secret missions. Our civilian friends could be seen each afternoon from our window learning "'the manual" and the elements

proach them, and although they are in 'cits' we know they are our own. Are they not wearing an Alumni button in the lapel of their coat? W e chat, we reminisce; this happy group tells us they are flying on the next plane, to assume tour of duty." Now we are in Manila and I'm "over the hump" on my third China cruise. Today we learn that Holland and Belgium are in itâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;these are great times and I wonder if we will sail for home on schedule.

Captain T. S. King, U. S. N. Director of Athletics Captain Thomas Starr King relieved Captain E. W. McKee as the Direaor of Athletics on 31 July 1940. Captain King was graduated from the Naval Academy in 1911. He was a member of the football team and crew squad while a midshipman and won the major award, "N," in both of these sports. In addition, he captained the 1910 football team. It appears that Captain King's earliest connection with the Athletic Association occurred in 1908 when he was the "Third Class Representative on the Executive Committee of the Midshipmen's Athletic Association." Captain King has served two previous tours of duty at the Naval Academy. From 30 August 1930 to 16 June 1933 he was on the staff of the Executive Department; and from 14 August 1935 to 18 April 1938 he was Secretary of the Academic Board and an aide to the Superintendent.

The second in the M-Boat series of new Navy craft launched in response to President Roosevelt's building program was launched at the Mercy Hosp. Ways in San Diego at the ungodly (and some claim unconstitutional) hour of 0645, Thursday morning, 13 June 1940.

The entire proceedings (subsequent to the actual keel laying which it is believed took place secretly at Mare Island last October) was supervised by that well known specialist in such matters. Commander N. Roberts (MC) USN. This new craft, the second of the Mseries, is the sistership of the U. S. S. BuTCH MULLER which has been in drydock (except for an occasional accident) for several years.

The specifications of the trim craft were issued to the press as follows: Name . . U. S. S. LOS ANGELES, CALIF. At the last three meetings of the Association, we have discussed the relationship of our members to the Navy in the present emergency. It was unanimously resolved that we should tender an offer of cooperation with the Service and then artively aid in making this cooperation effective.

A committee was appointed and they have laid out a comprehensive program. As a first move in this program, a questionnaire has been prepared to obtain complete information on our membership. It is our intention to summarize this information and submit the summary and the individual questionnaire to the Navy Department thru the correct channels, to the end that: 1. The Department may make use of the aid so offered.

2. A plan of modernizing our individual capabilities may be adopted.

We will appreciate your filling out the questionnaire and at once returning two copies to Los Angeles Branch of the U. S. Naval Academy Association, P. O. Box 6330, Metropolitan Station, Los Angeles.

NEW YORK, iV. Y. SPEAKER, JUNE LUNCHEON Mr. Frank Chapman, Editor of Business Week, our guest speaker at the June 12 th Luncheon brought us a first hand picture of war preparations and its cause and effect on the Europeon countries he visited just prior to the Nazi attack on Holland and Belgium.

He felt that World War 2 was following a definite pattern caused by the economic necessities of Germany. He indicated that Hitler would dictate the peace terms, and would reshuffle the colonies of France and England.

He thinks trade will be carried on by barter instead of gold and that this will be a definite threat to our world trade and especially in South America.

Although Mr. Chapman felt that it was too late to save the Allies (England and France), he also thought that Hitler was fighting the war on a shoe string and that Germany is definitely short of essential war materials. He spoke of a trade agreement with Russia that was not publicized in which Russia supplied Germany with fodder for cattle, and oil in return for one-quarter billion dollars of munitions to be delivered on order by Russia. In addition, Russia got the Fisher Hydrogenation process and a process for making synthetic rubber.

Mr. Chapman stated German morale excellent. Business was also behind Hitler and that his strategy was to take France quickly before England could marshal real help.

depended on long term preparation, hoping that attack against them would not strike before 1942.

In traveling from Berlin to England via Holland just before the Blitzkrieg started, Mr. Chapman saw about 7,000 anti-aircraft guns mounted along the railroad between Berlin and the Dutch border with helmeted troops on every side. This impressive total compares with our pathetic total of 463 anti-aircraft guns in the whole United States, not nearly enough to protect New York City alone.

While final arrangements have not been completely consummated, it is more than probable that our next speaker who will address us on August 8th will be Major General David Barrows, former President of the University of California and an outstanding personality who needs no introduction.

The Midshipmen's Annual Luncheon was the highlight of our September 5th meeting.

The fact that all of the three connecting dining rooms were filled to capacity and that extra tables had to be brought in to accommodate a number close to seventy-five is in itself sufficient to attest to the success and the spirit of the gathering. It was with pleasure that Midshipmen O'Sullivan, Graham, Logan, and Glennan were introduced as the honored guests. Their presence was the motive for a very splendid talk which was given

by Mr. John Thompson who graciously assented to deliver the talk in the unavoidable absence of Colonel Boone who was scheduled to be the guest speaker. Our group is particularly indebted to Mr. Thompson for his unstinted and whole hearted response in stepping into the breech, and his topic embraced the new order, or if you wish to call it the disorder of Europe and Asia. He drew a parallel between the present unrest about the world to the revolutions approximating the time of Napoleon which resulted from the French Revolution. He pointed to the new conditions, economic and otherwise, which are faced not only by the British people but by our own, and he stressed the necessity of a strong defensive mechanism which the United States must possess in order to enjoy security.

The danger of fifth column activities both here and in other parts of the Western Hemisphere was analyzed as were the bases which the United States are about to acquire.

Among those whom we were happy to welcome were Major General David Barrows; Major Leslie Downing, the Secretary of the West Point group who is stationed at the Presidio; Lt. Commander Melendy, who may now be found at 345 Forrest Avenue, Palo Alto; Colonel Lamoreaux, USA, Retired; as

well as our good friend and staunch member, Pat Donavin.

In point of numbers, spirit and good fellowship, as well as the talk which we were accorded, placed this meeting among the very best that we have ever held, and it augurs well for the remaining luncheons of the Fall season.

The next luncheon of the San Francisco Alumni will be held as usual on the first Thursday of the month which will fall on October 3rd. It is probable that Mr. Letchfield, Vice President of the Wells Fargo Bank, will talk to us on some subject of finance.

The speaker is a man high in financial circles and is an authority on the subject of money.

Do not forget the date, October 3rd; the time, 12 noon; the place, the Commercial Club; and all those who have not paid their two dollars dues for this year please bring those two little round dollars with you.

ST. LOUIS, MO. At 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 7th, President Elson, of the St. Louis Chapter, opened the annual midshipmen's luncheon meeting at the Missouri Athletic Club, St. Louis Room. Twenty-five of the members were present. This was one of the best turnouts we've had and perhaps the reason for this turnout can be attributed to the fact that in addition to have the midshipmen there. Captain Schwartz of the Naval Reserve, was present to tell us about personnel procurement.

Provisional Ensign, Class V-7, V-6, V-3, and Probationary Commissions were discussed by Captain Schwartz and numerous questions were answered.

Several of the old time grads who are feeling the urge to get back into the service either as reserve or on active made their wishes known, and further appointments were made with Captain Schwartz to discuss the possibilities.

Unfortunately we were honored with the presence of only three midshipmenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Murch, Jones, and Drew. Drew being junior made the response to President Elson's address to the midshipmen and did a bang-up job. Pitt Kellogg conducted the business session, read correspondence from Rip Miller relative to football players, "The Thodes Scholars"; and the U. S. N. A. Alumni Association badges were displayed. The Association voted $5.00 to pay for fifty of these badges. A list was passed for Naval Academy Rosettes to be worn in the buttonhole of "cits." Seven crashed through for this thirty-five cents item.

Mr. Raymond Dyer was nominated and unanimously elected Treasurer of the Association wherewith Pitt Kellogg turned to him the books and the money. All those present introduced themselves by name, class, home town, duty, and business classification. We were sorry at this meeting to learn that Guy Helmick and Alcorn Beckmann have both been transferred and with them went our best wishes for continued success.

Both Captain Schwartz and Pitt Kellogg commented upon the ring worm officers, ninety day wonders, etc.; pointing out to the visiting midshipmen not to take it too badly as reserve officers coming into active service provided a means of relief, rest, and efficiency that couldn't be had manning such a large

navy as the President plans with the present active personnel, and while it might mean a penalty in the way of numbers for a short time, in the long run the reserve officers in aaive dury would be appreciated.

Captain Schwartz announced that Colonel Isaac Hedges had been appointed Navy Day Chairman for the State of Missouri. He will work in conjunction with former Mayor Henry Kiel. It was called to our attention that the grave of William Chauvenet at Bellefountaine Cemetery has been long neglected. To the old-timers of the Navy, they will recall Wm. Chauvenet was the author of several mathematical books used at the Naval School for boys, principally plane and solid geometry, and the theme for Missouri's Navy Day will be based on the memory of William Chauvenet, and upon a motion duly made and seconded, the St. Louis Chapter appropriated $10.00 and their cooperation to perpetuate the memory of William Chauvenet.

The Washington Branch association met at the Army-Navy Country Club on Friday evening, July 12th. President Bullis called the meeting to order at 8:15 P.M. with 33 members and three guests present. Bullis announced that the August meeting would be held at the same club in the form of a buffet dinnerdance. The details were to be worked out by the Committee headed by Steye Rice and due notice will be sent each member. The date is August 9th. Bullis then introduced the guest speaker of the evening, Mr. P. E. Foxworth, associate direaor of the F.B.I. Mr. Foxworth gave a highly interesting talk on plant protection, sabotage, and Fifth Column preparedness. At the conclusion, he answered many questions fired at him by members who wanted to get all the data possible while they had the opportunity, the occasion being an "off the record" event. One of the guests of the evening was Arthur Godfrey, local radio announcer and entertainer with station WJSV, who had given the meeting several plugs on his radio hour. Godfrey, an old Navy man during the World War, passed the entrance examinations for the Academy and then decided he wanted some immediate action and sailed for Turkey instead of reporting at the Academy. I R E C T L Y and indirectly the European war has created many problems for the American Red Cross. Not only has it been engaged in relieving the distress of refugees in war-ridden Europe, but from Greenland's icy mountains to heat-drenched Manila in the far-off Philippines its representatives and members have been at work.

of Denmark, the American Red Cross despatched a representative, Maurice R. Reddy, to ascertain whether there was any need, now or in the future, in meeting which the American Red Cross might be of service. Through the cooperative courtesy of the U . S. Coast Guard, accommodations for the trip were made available on the cutter Comanche which, at the same time, carried two consular representatives of the State Department to Greenland.

After a month's stay, during which he conferred with officials and people alike, Mr. Reddy returned to report that Greenland appeared well able to look out for herself from the economic standpoint, and that the greatest need at present was for information from families and friends in Denmark. Through the Red Cross Inquiry and Information Service, this need is now being cared for.

When, in far-ofif Hongkong, it was determined to evacuate civilians because of the danger of attack, the Philippine Red Cross suddenly was confronted with the task of caring for more than 3,000 women and child evacuees arriving in Manila.

With the cooperation of personnel of the United States armed forces, these refugees were provided with shelter, subsistence, medical attention and hospitalization, recreational activities and snecial health work among the children. A total of 72 Red Cross nurses were placed on duty in this emergency.

At home a growing army of volunteers, now numbering more than 500,000, has been at work since the war broke out. What they have accomplished may be realized when it is known that more than 1,000,000 garments and 9,000,000 surgical dressings prepared by them had been consigned and shipped to Red Cross representatives in Europe as of Sept. 20.

During the month of July, Red Cross shipments consisting of food, clothing, medical and surgical supplies left New York for the British Isles on more than 40 vessels. Toward the end of the month shipments aggregated close to 1,000,000 pounds. All-told during that month, 20,000,000 pounds of relief goods were despatched to the American committee in England. Great quantities of additional materials have been sent since then.

Despite war relief activities, the Red Cross is planning for expansion of its services at home. Recent measures of national defense mean a large increase in Red Cross activities, not only in connection with its work with men of the armed forces of the government but in other lines of endeavor.

The American Red Cross must be prepared for any possible emergency. To be so it needs the continued cooperation of Navy men, as well as that of private citizens.
