One Million Reasons to Celebrate The Stamp Ministry Reaches Milestone Goal During Shell Point’s 50th Anniversary Year Every day, the United States Postal Service processes and delivers nearly 500 million pieces of mail, each bearing a colorful, varied assortment of postage stamps. But after the birthday cards, love letters and packages reach their final destinations, what happens to the cancelled stamps? Enter the Alliance Stamp Ministry at Shell Point. Since its inception in 1972, the Stamp Ministry’s cadre of dedicated resident volunteers has collected, processed and resold this unique commodity. In 2018, the hard work of the past 46 years paid off as the Stamp Ministry crossed an extraordinary milestone: more than $1 million raised through the sale of cancelled stamps! On Tuesday, August 7, more than 60 Stamp Ministry volunteers joined Shell Point and Village Church staff for a special luncheon to recognize and honor this extraordinary million dollar achievement. “From a small stamp, God has brought great blessing,” said Senior Pastor Andy Hawkins of The Village Church. All the money raised during the past 46 years has been donated to help fund the printing of Sunday School literature for children living in Central and South America. A running tally, kept since the resident-run group first formed in 1972, revealed that the $1 million threshold was crossed during 2018 after a campaign led by group leaders Ben and Treva Crump (Junonia) in honor of Shell Point’s 50th anniversary. “How special that the Stamp Ministry could celebrate such a big milestone, just as Shell Point commemorates its 50th year!” said Treva. “It’s truly incredible how much can be accomplished for missions by giving a second life to discarded stamps. Little is much when God is in it.”

Snip, Sort & Sell Truthfully, the operation is nothing short of impressive. Three days a week, enthusiastic volunteers take a seat along the row of tables arranged end-to-end, and begin the process of trimming and sorting stamps. For some the process is meditative; for others it is a chance to chat with friends, scissors in hand. The variety of stamps trimmed and sold by the club is Continued next page Shell Point Life | September 2018

simply astounding. Clusters of small labeled tubs lining the center of the trimming tables illuminate four major categories of stamps: Common, Christmas, Commemorative and Love. The pattern of these four labeled tubs repeats itself for more than 20 feet so that, no matter where one sits at the trimming station, it’s possible to drop a trimmed stamp into the appropriate tub. Adjacent to the tubs, which hold “the big four,” are smaller boxes where volunteers sort trimmed stamps in other categories, including airmail, special delivery, high value, presorted nonprofit, foreign and Canadian. At the nearby shipping station, a large upright scale holds a two-foot high by twofoot wide box of trimmed stamps. When full, it holds fifty pounds of stamps. Many stamps are prepared and sold by the pound; other rare and foreign stamps can be individually sold for valuable profit. At the end of the line, packets of 100, 200, 500, and 1,000 stamps are prepared for a small group of buyers and stamp dealers. 4

Shell Point Life | September 2018

According to Treva, some collectors buy in bulk while others are looking for the philatelist’s needle in a haystack. Can you imagine scavenging through a fifty-pound box of single stamps? For the Stamp Ministry’s original founder, Dr. Robert Searing, digging through a giant collection of stamps seemed like just the thing to do.

A Stamp in Time During his career, Robert owned a business that soaked stamps off paper, sorted them and prepared them for sale. Through this company, he had established a good working relationship with H.R. Harris Stamp Company, and the money made from Robert’s stamp company was used to support H.C.J.B., a Christian radio station that reached Central and Southern America. When Robert moved to Shell Point in 1971 from Columbia, South America, he brought his extensive, prized stamp collection. It wasn’t long before Robert introduced the hobby of collecting, buying and selling stamps to other residents. From these humble beginnings, the Stamp Ministry was born in 1972. Shell

Stuck on Stamps? Here’s How to Help Save your stamps. Cut them off the envelope (leaving a 1/4” of paper around the stamp), and drop them off in the Stamp Room, at any concierge desk, or in The Village Church lobby. Encourage others to save their stamps. Anyone can donate stamps. Simply encourage others to send their cancelled stamps directly to the Stamp Room at: Stamp Ministry 15000 Shell Point Blvd. Fort Myers, FL 33908 Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope so the donation can be acknowledged. Become a volunteer. If you would like to volunteer with the Stamp Ministry in any capacity, contact Volunteer Coordinator Dottie Tronnes at (239) 454-2290.

Point’s executive director, Dr. Bernard King, stepped in to formally support the continuation of the Stamp Ministry at Shell Point. That year, the ministry raised $4,100. The Stamp Ministry grew by leaps and bounds as word got out and many Shell Point residents, local and national churches, and other organizations across the United States began sending cancelled stamps to the group’s headquarters in the Creativity Center on The Island. Two decades later in 1997, David and Betty Constance, then serving as international workers in Argentina, communicated a need for funding to support the production, printing and publishing of Sunday School material in Spanish. It was decided that the funds generated by the sales of the Stamp Ministry’s stamp production would be dedicated to supporting Publicaciones

Alianza in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2017, the Stamp Ministry expanded from its primary location on The Island to open a satellite location in The Arbor assisted living center at The Woodlands. Word spread quickly to Shell Point’s other two assisted living residences, and the enthusiasm found at The Springs and King’s Crown was more than enough to launch two more satellite locations. Today, the not-so-small battalion of Stamp Room volunteers meets in multiple locations throughout the community’s 700-acre property, arming themselves with scissors, eyeglasses, cheery attitudes and determination – proud that their work helps to spread the gospel in Latin America directly from Shell Point. The significant impact of giving cancelled stamps a second life – and more importantly,

those who have benefited from the ministry’s $1 million in donated proceeds – is undeniable. Thanks to this faithful, 46-year volunteer tradition, the many hands that made light the work, and support from both The Alliance and Shell Point Retirement Community, the Stamp Ministry truly has one million reasons to celebrate.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Stamp Ministry, sorting and processing the stamps so that they can be sold quickly and efficiently. It’s easy to learn, fun to do, and who knows – you might make a friend, or even 20!

Following a successful run as Galileo’s daughter, Janina Birtolo will bring another historic female to life on the stage this year. This new, original one-woman play, Ghosts of the Desert, will portray Gertrude Bell, the “female Lawrence of Arabia.” Ghosts of the Desert tells the little-known story of a privileged British woman who fell in love with the Middle East and became the most respected foreign woman – and spy – in that region during the first half of the 20th century.

New York City bibliophile Helene Hanff (Anne Bancroft) writes to the London bookshop Marks & Co in search of some titles she has not been able to find. Store manager Frank Doel (Anthony Hopkins) responds politely to her chatty letter, and over the course of two decades, a deep, long-distance friendship evolves. Based on Hanff’s epistolary memoir, and its later two-person stage adaptation, the film version incorporates new characters, including Doel’s wife, Nora (Judi Dench).

5 Tips to Actively Aging Gracefully! BY R O BY N C H U R C H , S A LO N & S PA M A N AG E R

Robyn’s mom, Ruth, had a huge impact on her life, teaching her to smile, love others and age gracefully.

As Shell Point celebrates Active Aging Week, I reflect on memories of my mother and how she viewed aging. She was extremely positive and maintained a beautiful smile on her face just about all of the time. She taught me to smile, even if your day isn’t going the way you would like. With a smile, your mood and overall outlook will improve regardless. Besides, who wants frown lines?

Cryoderm contains natural pain relieving ingredients backed by clinical trials, such as essential oils and plant extracts. 4) Healthy skin is attractive at any age for both men and women. With age, the cell renewal process slows down, and the skin becomes thinner and retains less water. It becomes more sensitive to environmental stress, which is why products containing Vitamin C and peptides are beneficial. Skin also loses elasticity and firmness, which causes wrinkles to appear or become more pronounced. Look for products with retinol, ceramides or collagen to revitalize your skin.

Here are a few more life lessons to consider when it comes to aging gracefully. 1) Develop a sense of well-being and inner joy. Find a hobby, try a new activity, attend a class or look for volunteer opportunities in your community or court. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, you might be just the right person to make it happen. Keeping your body and mind engaged will go a long way to keeping that smile on your face and frown lines at bay! 2) Massage therapy is an effective way to help keep you aging actively. While massage can certainly enhance your sense of well-being, most seniors receive massage for medical reasons. Incorporating regular massage therapy into your routine has been shown to be effective in treating chronic pain, particularly in joints, such as shoul-

ders and knees, while also improving stability and posture, keeping you on the go. 3) Topical pain relievers are effective in reducing pain at specific sites. Cryoderm, one type of topical pain reliever, will help keep you on the golf course, tennis court or attending your favorite Academy class.

5) Treat your feet with regular pedicures. Not only will a pedicure put a little pep in your step, but it is also a practical solution to keep your feet healthy and free of dead skin build-up. It also helps keep your nails clean and cuticles healthy. DaniPro nail polish and base coat is doctor-formulated and podiatrist-recommended to keep toenails healthy. It is the only polish that contains undecylenic acid for its beneficial properties; however, this polish is still free of harmful toxins.

The Giving Back Series

It’s For the Kids! B Y A M A N D A P E N D E R G R A S T, S P R I N G S A C T I V I T I E S L E A D E R

In May, residents from The Arbor, King’s Crown, and The Springs lovingly created handmade onesies to be gifted to newborn children at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, the only pediatric hospital of its kind located between Tampa and Miami, opened a new building just over a year ago at Lee Health’s HealthPark Medical Center. The 128-bed, seven-story facility is designed to make children feel like they are in a fun, safe space. The building is filled with bright colors, activities and interactive stations for both patients and visitors. Assisted living residents carefully painted and hand-stenciled adorable, uplifting designs on the garments. In June, residents had the opportunity to personally deliver the onesies to the hospital, “showering” children with their labor of love. Residents also enjoyed a tour of the beautiful facility by Lee Health staff members. This project is part of Shell Point assisted living’s Giving Back program series, which connects assisted living residents with ways to participate in community and social involvement initiatives that benefit local nonprofit organizations. A special Ronald McDonald Family Room provides a place of respite and distraction within the hospital for families. Myrtle Hearn (King’s Crown) posed for a playful photo.

Peals of laughter. Hands clapping along to Jesus Loves Me. The pitter-patter of running feet. The happy, lively sounds of 35 children filled The Village Church as residents and employees brought their children and grandchildren to participate in the Shell Point Splash Vacation Bible School. This weeklong summer program, a joint effort between Shell Point and The Village Church, was designed to provide children aged 5 to 11 with a fun-filled week of indoor and outdoor recreational activities, Bible lessons, team games, science experiments and much more.

Shell Point transformed into a summer school playground as the energetic children boarded the Suzy Q boat for a nature cruise, practiced line dancing with resident volunteers, took swim lessons at the LifeQuest Aquatic Center, engaged in creative arts and crafts projects, and decorated cookies with assisted living residents. The Island Fitness Center hosted an obstacle course workout, and the children also received instruction in putting and chipping at the Shell Point Golf Course driving range. Friendly visitors from the Southwest Florida community provided up-close animal interactions, demonstrations and sweet treats as part of the daily summer camp experience. The arrival of a pair of miniature horses resulted in excited reactions and several children fulfilled a lifelong dream to pet and ride the gentle animals. The Shell Factory provided a fun, interactive reptile show at The Village Church that featured a skunk, iguana, baby alligator, snake, and other small creatures that the children could touch. The Naples Zoo even brought a lizard and a frog along to teach a nature lesson and play interactive games. Later in the week, assisted living residents hosted a Sub Zero ice cream presentation, where children learned how ice cream could be made with nitrogen. After the demonstration, everyone had the opportunity to enjoy a cup of Sub Zero ice cream in a choice of flavors. Continued next page

Residents beat the heat in a tasty way during a recent ice cream social, held in The Cove at The Estuary. Live music played as residents dressed their ice cream sundaes with a host of delicious toppings. New resident Roger Carlson took a break from unpacking his new apartment in The Woodlands to enjoy the event and meet his new neighbors. “The ice cream was better than the famous Love Boat’s ice cream here in town,” he said. Resident Chris Himebrook (Turban) commended the staff for the event. “The Resident Life team is always creating fun activities for us that make life lighter and brighter!” The event had a great turnout, with an estimated 500 cups of ice cream served. RESTFUL PURSUITS B Y R E V. A N D R E W H A W K I N S , P H . D . , S E N I O R P A S T O R , T H E V I L L A G E C H U R C H

I remember when vacations were restful. And not that long ago either. But this summer was not that way. Jean and I did the grandchild birthday tour. I know our numbers are not that impressive in this community where the grandchildren are more than sand on the seashore. We only have two. Andrew is four and lives near Philadelphia. Maggie Jo is two and at the time of this writing was in Washington, D.C. Our vacation called for a week with each. Having studied developmental psychology in graduate school, I understand what to expect at various ages of toddlerhood. The even-numbered years are the worst. We all know about the “terrible twos.” And age four – well, that’s just the “terrible twos” times, well, two. Both grandchildren are expressing their independent wills. At age two and four, they are at the ages when we’re glad we’re their grandparents and not their parents. Chasing them around for two weeks was delightful,

Jean and Andy Hawkins love visiting their grandchildren, including 4-yearold Andrew.

but it was also exhausting. I had to come back to work to get some rest! Pursuing two toddlers was a wonderful vacation, but not a restful one. The contrast with pursuing Jesus is stunning: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28–30, ESV)

Evidently, coming to Jesus is the real vacation. The invitation is issued to the laborer, to the burden-bearer. To the exhausted, stressed and overwhelmed. But Jesus is not saying, “Do nothing, and find rest.” The invitation is to do the work of Jesus: “Take my yoke upon you...” Some vocational training is necessary, however: “Learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart...” The invitation is to disciples – students, learners. The invitation is personal: “Come to me...” Jesus wants a personal connection. A connection in which our Savior can feed into our lives. When we come to Jesus personally, when we become his disciples, when we learn of his gentle and humble character and begin to be transformed in the process – then we find rest for our souls. Our minds become satisfied. Our wills relax into his will. Our emotions find peace. Rest for our souls. That’s a vacation from all our striving. And while pursuing toddlers is fun and exhilarating, pursuing Jesus is the real vacation.

Nature’s Notebook BY STEVE MORTON, LANDSCAPE MANAGER

Birds of a Feather, Come Together A brilliant yellow cape weaver bird stands directly upon the blue flower petal, and places his beak at the exact correct angle to acquire the energy rich nectar hidden within. Like a tightrope walker, the bird must constantly compensate for wind by adjusting his body position as he sips the clear, syrupy liquid. Although there are many more orange petals than the single blue on this flower, they are much too weak and flimsy to support the weaver bird’s weight. It seems by design that the blue petal is color-coded as a landing perch beckoning the bird to alight.

Finding Paradise Sir Joseph Banks was already a magistrate and a member of the Royal Society at age 25 when he boarded the HMS Endeavor, captained by James Cook in 1768. During the voyage, Banks and his team collected botanical specimens from Brazil, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia. Banks returned from the voyage in 1771 with fantastical specimens and rock star status. He continued his work in horticulture and became the director of Kew Gardens in London where he frequently sent botanists worldwide on plant collection trips. In 1773, Banks received a specimen so spectacular that he named it after the British Queen, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Later

in life, Sir Joseph Banks was knighted and acknowledged as England’s most renowned naturalist. Strelitzia reginae is native to South Africa and grows long, stiff, oar shaped leaves; however, the blossom is among the most unique in the plant kingdom. The flower is held well above the leaves on its propriety stalk to boldly announce its presence to anyone who ventures near. At the terminal end of the stalk is a tubular appendage, pointed on one end, which appears like the beak of a large bird. Scientists call this structure a spathe. As the flower begins to form, the top of the spathe splits open to release colorful petals until they stand upright like the feathers in a headdress. With “feathers” of vivid orange and blue, the flower is unmistakable. Two of the blue petals have fused into a single, stiff twig-like structure that contains both nectar and pollen. As the bird perches on the petal to obtain the sweet treat, sticky pollen adheres to his feet for pollination of the next flower visited.

Path of Migration The bird of paradise plant has been established by fervent gardeners around the world in tropical and sub-tropical locations. Without a local pollinator, the bird of paradise plant seemed safe to plant without risk of uncontrolled spreading into the natural environments. There are no cape weaver birds in Southern California to pollinate the plant, yet, scientists began to find viable seeds growing within the flower structure. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the North American native bird, the common yellowthroat warbler, has discovered the nectar source and has become the new pollinator for Southern California birds of paradise plants. Like Sir Joseph Banks, the bird of paradise has traveled the entire world, and like Banks it is a collector. The bird of paradise has very cleverly collected a new pollinator. To see the remarkable bird of paradise plant, no circuitous navigation with Captain Cook is required! Simply go to one of my favorite places that I call “Paradise Hill.” Like Shell Point’s very own Kew Gardens, Paradise Hill is located in the Eagles Preserve neighborhood west of the Pelican Building. You will discover a mound (ok, not really – a hill) with a flock of a dozen mature bird of paradise plants. At any given time there will be blossoms of this remarkable species.
