Our Honor Roll of Investors is published annually by the SHC Office of Advancement in appreciation of our generous benefactors who directly impact the lives of young men and women entrusted to our care. The following information highlights giving during the 2015 fiscal year, which ran from July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2015.

s we embrace the current school year, we are proud of our accomplishments leading into this fall. In 2014-15, our Parent Giving exceeded $1 million, and we surpassed the previous year’s fundraising records in nearly all of our events including the Walkathon, Spring Gala and Irish Invitational Golf Tournament. Alumni, foundations and friends continue to support SHC in significant ways. We successfully raised $2.5 million towards our science facility renovation project, with a plan to raise the remaining $1 million to complete the final phase of the project. Finally, this past May, we bid farewell to an incredible graduating class of 2015, led by the Piro Program’s very first valedictorian and Gates Millennium Scholar, Precious Listana ’15. The support Precious received throughout her years at SHC is a direct result of your generosity. We look forward to seeing her continued success as she studies at UC Berkeley this fall. We are humbled by yet another record-breaking admissions cycle, and have welcomed the Class of 2019 with enthusiasm and open arms. Our students are enjoying the successful completion of Phase Three of our science facility renovation, and their learning-experience is enrichened by a passionate faculty and access to state-of-theart classroom technology. At the end of this academic year, we will begin the fourth and final phase of our science facility renovation. Investor and alumnus George Lynch ’67 shares, “While my own education was wellrounded and I certainly learned a lot, I envy what kids at SHC have today.” George recognizes that as time progresses, so too does the quality and depth of the SHC educational experience. It starts with the strong foundation built by our Founders and is expressed through our incredible faculty and staff. Above all, our progress is not possible without our community of supporters who believe in our mission and are committed to the success of our students. Our strong, lasting relationships with those who believe in our mission make all of our achievements and success possible. As we strive toward financial sustainability, our students are at the heart of every decision we make. With 2020Vision, our comprehensive fundraising campaign, we are laying the foundation for our future. With your support, we are able to bear witness to our students achieving excellence throughout their four years at SHC and beyond. Science Facilities Project Update Responding to the ever-changing landscape of science and technology, SHC resequenced its science curriculum three years ago to better meet the needs of today’s students. Physics First, sometimes called Biology Last, calls for students to study physics before chemistry and biology. All freshmen at SHC now take a UC-approved lab science physics course, and students have the opportunity to take as many as six science courses while at SHC. In preparation for this curriculum change, SHC developed a plan to address the need for updated physics, chemistry, biology and marine biology classrooms. Today’s learning spaces need to accommodate more handson, inquiry-based lab group work that occurs

within a modern science curriculum. The four-phase science classroom renovation project is moving along on schedule and on budget, with the third phase completed in August 2015. The phasing of the work was necessary to allow time for the construction to be done during the summer without disrupting classes during the school year. This scope of work includes the reconfiguration of walls and doors, lighting, electrical, plumbing, mechanical upgrades, new ceilings and floors, new data wiring and technology equipment, case work and new furniture. During Phase One, completed in summer of 2013, four non-science classrooms on the fourth floor of the school’s LaSalle

academic building were converted to three large physics classrooms. Phase Two was completed in summer of 2014, as two lectures-only classrooms and one underutilized work room on the second floor were converted into two large lecture rooms and an efficient prep space. With a focus on creating ample chemistry lab space, Phase Three called for four new fully equipped chemistry classrooms at the east end of the second floor. Phase Four, which will be completed in the summer of 2016, calls for the remaining second floor science classrooms on the west end of the second floor to be reconfigured to create three biology and marine biology lecture/lab spaces.

s we celebrate the lives of members of our community who have passed, we often find ourselves humbled by the kindness and generosity of those individuals who have made provisions for SHC in their estate plans. This year, we look back on the life of Paul Raymond ’46, a Sacred Heart graduate and fourthgeneration San Franciscan who radiated with pride for the City. A true local, Paul attended St. Agnes Elementary School in the Haight Ashbury district and went on to graduate from Sacred Heart, and later, Saint Mary’s College of California. He took his first job as a revenue enhancer for the Internal Revenue Service. Inspired by his love of the job,

Raymond remained faithful in his work until retirement in 1984. At the age of 55, he began a second career, as a business tax auditor for San Francisco tax collector, and permanently retired in 1992. During retirement, Paul enjoyed spending time with his friends, especially his classmates from Saint Mary’s class of 1950. Raymond was a loyal supporter of SHC through the years and one of the early members of the President’s Cabinet, which is comprised of our most generous investors. He especially enjoyed talking with students during the annual phone-a-thons. Through careful estate planning, Paul was able to make a very substantial gift of approximately $550,000 to SHC that will continue to benefit students for generations to come. We are forever grateful to Paul Raymond for his generous support of our important educational mission. With his incredible gift, Paul joins SHC’s Heritage Society, which honors the vision and generosity of alumni and friends who name SHC as a beneficiary in their estate plans.

Engagement at Every Level

“T

he Christian Brothers got it right—they taught me the values of loyalty and friendship. I truly feel I am the man I am today because of my experience at Sacred Heart.” The Brothers’ message of loyalty and friendship was passed down through the generations for George Lynch ’67 and his family, starting in the 1930s with his father George Lynch, Sr. ’35. George has shared his own stories with his children and grandchild. George fondly recalls the teachers that contributed to his development as a young man at Sacred Heart, including Brother Arnold, Brother Edmund and Earl Hargrove ’52. Above all, George counts Coach Bill Henneberry ’48 as one of his greatest influences. “He was not just a coach—he taught us life lessons. We all knew Coach Henneberry was looking out for us.” As a founding member of the Friday the 13th Luncheon, George continues to build a sense of community among his fellow SH classmates. Years ago, George and his classmates picked a date that would be easy to remember and vowed to come together to celebrate their alma mater and the friendships they have created throughout the years. The Friday the 13th Luncheons found their permanent home at Capurro’s Restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf, owned by fellow alumnus Paul Capurro ’67, and the gatherings expanded. This November 13, men from the classes of 1965-69 will continue the tradition. George’s loyalty to his alma mater extends far beyond the famous Friday the 13th gatherings.

Working with his sister Colleen Lynch Baptista ’74, brother-in-law Rick Baptista, niece Kate Baptista, and others in the Baptista/Lynch circle of family and friends, George has been instrumental in raising scholarship support through the Tim Baptista ’99 Endowed Scholarship Fund, which honors his late nephew and beloved member of the SHC community. The fund grants a substantial scholarship to two deserving students each year. Since its inception, more than 20 students have received significant tuition assistance. This year, George is also working to support the Class of 1967 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund to honor classmates who have passed. On October 5, alumni joined friends and family of Bill McDonagh ’67 for the inaugural Billy Mac Memorial Golf Tournament, raising more than $15,000 for the class fund. As an active investor, George is continually impressed by the ways SHC has grown over the years. “While my own education was well-rounded and I certainly learned a lot, I envy what kids at SHC have today.” It is through the generosity of investors like George and his wife Sue that allows SHC to provide the resources and opportunities that ensure our students thrive academically, spiritually and intellectually. “I hope that my fellow alumni see that our years at SH, St. Vincent, Cathedral or SHC really did define us as individuals. I hope we all continue to be grateful for the Brothers, Daughters and lay teachers through a contribution of any kind. There are so many ways to support SHC.”

Fundraising Events SHC extends its gratitude to all who donated to the Spring Gala: Club Monte Carlo, the Irish Invitational Golf Tournament and the Walkathon. Event donors are acknowledged throughout the Honor Roll, appearing in their respective giving-level categories. We are thrilled to share these exciting highlights from each of the events. SPRING GALA

More than 400 guests, 100 volunteers, a 10-member steering committee, 360 underwriters, advertisers, auction donors and supporters came together for a wonderful night in support of the students of SHC. The annual Parents Association Spring Gala, our premier community-wide fundraiser, raised more than $228,000 to fund the renovation of our science facilities, equipment for science labs, technology and collaborative learning advancements, school vans, eco-friendly water bottle filling stations and more. IRISH INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The sold-out 2015 Irish Invitational and Fightinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Irish Athletics Night took place on a gorgeous June day with 144 golfers playing the prestigious Lake Merced Golf Course. After a successful 18 holes, 215 guests enjoyed dinner in support of the SHC Football and Baseball Programs. The events raised a tournament record $72,000 for off-site athletic facilities and the SHC Football and Baseball Programs! WALKATHON

SHC students inspired the entire community by raising more than $223,400 at the close of the 25th Annual Walkathon on September 19, 2014! We set an ambitious goal, and with the help of family and friends our students surpassed it. Proceeds from the 2014 Walkathon supported the transformation of the science facilities, student scholarships and student travel grants. Congratulations to the students on another successful Walkathon! 18

rin Diner Kayser ’93 knows SHC students. She and nine other family members including her parents and siblings are proud alumni. Her own four years as a student set the foundation for her life-long experience. Today, as assistant dean of students, social studies department chair and instructor of social studies, Erin reflects on the thread that binds SHC students of every generation together, “SHC students experience a sense of belonging and identity, a sense of interconnectedness and family.” As the social studies department chair, Erin is in the unique position of working alongside one of her high school mentors and fellow instructor of social studies, Rich Sansoe ’71. “In Mr. Sansoe’s class, history was not just the past. History was alive and impactful. He opened my eyes to the importance of studying history, not just to avoid repeating our mistakes, but to work hard to repeat the many things in our history of which we can be proud.”

After graduation, Erin went on to receive degrees in both social sciences and theatre arts from Notre Dame de Namur University and later moved to the east coast when her husband was stationed in Maryland. She taught sixth grade until her husband completed his military service and they returned to the Bay Area. In anticipation of their return, Erin interviewed at several local schools, including SHC, even though there were no available faculty positions at the time. As they were solidifying their cross-country move, there was a need in the SHC social studies department, and for Erin, everything fell into place. “I love being back at SHC. This is my family. I have unconditional love for our community, and I feel it in return.” Over the years, Erin has supported SHC beyond her contributions as an alumna and faculty member through her generosity as an investor. Every fall, Erin reaches out to her personal contacts through

social media to raise funds for our annual Walkathon—a fundraiser that engages our entire school community to raise support that enhances the learning experience of each and every student. “As teachers, we benefit from the funds raised through the Walkathon. Look at these facilities, our state-of-the-art classrooms. It’s so remarkable to me how the SHC community and families believe in and support what we’re doing to make sure our students have the best experience possible.” To other alumni who are considering making a gift, Erin says, “Consider that one person who made a difference in your experience while you were here. A favorite teacher, coach or mentor, or your best friend. What a wonderful way to say thank you. When I make a gift, I see it as an act of gratitude for the friends I had when I was a student. In a way, my donation makes it possible for future students to build those important, lifelong relationships.”

The Impact of Mentors at SHC

hen Courtney Chin ’03 was a De Paul Scholar at SHC, the most advanced technological gadget she owned was a graphing calculator. “We weren’t fortunate enough to have much of the classroom technology available today.” More than a decade after graduation, Courtney serves as a program manager in the Google Maps for Work product management team. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in media arts and science from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, Google recruited Courtney as an entry-level customer service representative in their online advertising department. From there, she moved on and moved up, eventually leading a global online advertising team. In addition to her work building enterprise solutions for businesses that use Google Maps, she founded a small business, Salud Cocktails & Co. “It’s an e-commerce service that delivers DIY ingredient kits for people to make craft cocktails at home.”

Courtney contributes her success as a Googler and as a small business owner to her time at SHC. “I grew intellectually and learned the value of hard work, determination and community.” She remembers the mentorship she received from De Paul Scholar Program Director Dr. Ken Hogarty ’66 and Director of Studies Kate McFadden; the ways in which instructors of History, English, Math and Science went above and beyond to ensure the success of their advanced placement students; and how her volleyball coach, Margi Beima, was instrumental in preparing her for volleyball at the college level. Recently appointed as a member of the SHC Board of Regents, Courtney is proud to stay connected to her alma mater, and finds great joy in giving back to ensure current and future students have access to incredible opportunities. “I truly believe that the only way we can guarantee a better future for everyone is to invest in the young adults who will shape it.”
